„he Economic Means to Freedom is one among many strategies that any individual could follow to
expand freedom. Nothing in this article should be regarded as a suggestion that other freedom strategies

„his article is mostly theory. Future articles will cover some of the specific steps you may be able to take
to embark upon practicing the Economic Means to Freedom. „his article does suggest a few steps to
start with -- such as finding out more about the free-enterprise institutions mentioned below (by utilizing
them you may be able to implement some aspects of the Economic Means to Freedom), and subscribing

As a professional consultant I've worked with computers for many years. I've also done some thinking
about why Microsoft has been so successful. Why did it overtake IBM in terms of market valuation some
years ago? Y

Microsoft basically sells software programs to make computers more efficient and effective and easier to
use. We could call Microsoft's programs "computer success programs." At the time Microsoft was
created its potential could have been measured by the difference between how successful computers
were at that time compared to how successful they could become. „here was a gap between what was
and what could be. „his gap represents potential. By utilizing this gap of potential, Microsoft co-founder
Bill Gates and some of his associates became billionaires and top the list of the richest people in the
world. Y

„he "gap of potential" can also be called an "opportunity gap." In human affairs there is also a gap
between what is and what could be. We suffer from "human failure programs" or "HFPs" (like coercive
political systems!) that tend to keep many of us stuck at a low level -- if we allow them to! „he gap
between what is and what could or should be represents potential -- the opportunity gap. In human
affairs generally, this potential is considerably greater than the potential that enabled Bill Gates to
become the richest man in the world. Y

So, the first thing to appreciate is that there is this huge potential of the opportunity gap. Provide people
with the means to bridge the opportunity gap, i.e., shift from where they are to where they should or
could be, is the essence of the Economic Means to Freedom. Y

Of course, with a computer it's easy to delete an old program and install a new one. With humans it's
much more difficult. We tend to love and identify with our programs (some obsolete), even if they no
longer work very well. Y

Notice that it's largely because of the terrocrats (terrocrat = coercive political agent or terrorist
bureaucrat) that we have the opportunity to take advantage of such an enormous opportunity gap.
„hrough coercive control of "education" and other means, they load people with human failure programs
(HFPs) -- such as "obedience to authority." In the absence of coercive political systems, there would be
far less holding people down, and the opportunity gap would be considerably smaller! Y

Also notice that as terrocrats become more onerous and oppressive with their "laws and regulations,"
"taxes," property seizures, etc., the more they tend to expand the opportunity gap! Y

As an outstanding example of someone practicing the Economic Means to Freedom, a businessman
bought a subset of the materials now available at BuildFreedom.com in 1993. At the time his company
had assets of $u ,000. Now, four years later his company's assets are worth about $40,000,000!
„hrough various stages of growth and metamorphoses and a reverse takeover/merger, this company is
now listed on Nasdaq. When all the reverse takeover/ merger transactions are completed, I guesstimate
about 90% of the company's shares will be owned by freedom lovers. („he name of the company is
available upon request. „his is emphatically not advice for or against investing in this company.) Y

Note: All the information referred to above is available to you free of charge for personal use from our
website: BuildFreedom.com. (We are supported by the business opportunities we promote which
enables us to provide all our information free of charge.) Y

 c

„he second important thing to realize is that we can usefully distinguish three economic sectors: (1)
public; (u) private; (3) free enterprise. „he "public" sector is the terrocrat sector. „he "private" sector
consists mostly of people who kowtow to the terrocrats and/or are in cahoots with them in various ways.
„hey pay "taxes" to support the terrocrats, they obey their "regulations," and they often beg for special
favors like "tariff protection." „he free-enterprise sector is also called "the underground economy," "black
economy," or "unrecorded economy." Y

By "free enterprise" I mean an economic system characterized by (1) property ownership; and (u)
voluntary exchange. In a free-enterprise system there are no "taxes" and no coercive terrocrat
"regulations"; no one initiates force, fraud, or the threat of force to overwhelm the will of another; people
are free to do whatever they like, provided they don't violate the rights of others -- basically the right to
own property and to engage in voluntary exchange. Free enterprise is a "human success program" or
"HSP." Coercion can be an HSP for those administering the coercion and some who benefit from the
coercion, but is an HFP or human failure program for everyone else. Y

„he greatest potential for providing people with the means to elevate themselves (in all respects) is in
the free- enterprise sector, because this is where we enjoy the greatest freedom. One perspective of
freedom is that it represents the range of positive options available to you. If you can find ways to
operate with reasonable safety in the free-enterprise sector, you enjoy competitive advantages: no or
few "taxes," no or few "regulations." (For most people it's not yet feasible to completely escape from the
terrocrat and private sectors -- e.g., when I put gas in my car, I pay some taxes.) Y

„he Internet makes it easier to shift assets, earnings, and economic activities into the free-enterprise
sector. Of course, the Internet itself constitutes an enormous expansion of the free-enterprise sector. Y

c

„he third principle of the Economic Means to Freedom is the creation of free-enterprise institutions in
areas like secure communication, currencies, banking, barter, investment, raising capital (free-enterprise
share exchanges), etc. „hese institutions will make it easier to shift assets, earnings, and economic
activities into the free-enterprise sector. Some examples: Y

Anthony L. Hargis & Co., 17uu0 Newhope St. #u01, Fountain Valley, California [9u70 ; „el. (714) 957-
1375. Banking -- gold and dollar accounts; free-enterprise share exchange.Y

Natural Coin Exchange, 33 3 SE Kelso Road, #u, PO Box 59, Boring, Oregon 97009; „el. (503) -
4941. Banking -- gold, silver, and dollar accounts.Y

Gold & Silver Reserve, Inc (E-gold). Accounts in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.Y

Much more information on monetary and banking freedom can be found in an article called '„he Future
of Money' http://www.free-market.net/features/spotlight/9709.html at the Free-Market.Net website. I invite
everyone interested in furthering the Economic Means to Freedom to help create and/or expand these
and similar free-enterprise institutions. Y

A major consideration is that if you're stuck in the "official" systems and they collapse, you may be in
such a hopeless situation that your very physical survival becomes a problem. Should such a collapse
occur, you'll be much better off if you've been using alternative systems for some time, and you've got at
least some of your assets in them. Y

x c

If you're an ardent freedom lover, and you live "in the system," obeying terrocrats and supporting them
by paying "taxes," then you're living contrary to your philosophy -- some would even say you're being a
traitor to your own philosophy. I have no intention here to make anyone wrong. I admit to paying certain
"taxes" because I calculate that to be the least evil. In this regard I choose to be a traitor to my own
philosophy. Y

We can think of a scale, spectrum, or continuum. At one extreme is being totally "in the system"; at the
other extreme is being totally "outside the system." Each individual can calculate where on the scale he
or she derives maximum benefit. And, of course, your life and affairs can be compartmentalized so
certain assets and activities are "in the system" and others are "outside the system." Y

Practicing the Economic Means to Freedom enables you to focus on doing things you can control. In
contrast to political strategies, your results don't depend on some terrocrats "changing the law" or a few
million voters changing their minds. I'm not suggesting that anyone drop political strategies. I am
suggesting that some people will be more successful, and more satisfied with the results they produce,
and personally benefit more from those results more quickly, if they practice the Economic Means to
Freedom. Y

Provided you can become successful in the free-enterprise sector, the benefits can be quick and
significant. For starters, if you successfully exit a "tax system," it may be the equivalent of giving yourself
a u5-35% pay raise! Y

By the way, my experience has been that in all the places I've lived during the past u5 years, I have
found people in the private sector willing to pay someone like myself in the free-enterprise sector without
any problems. It may involve registering your own company or setting up a trust. I've literally had no
problems -- even with a giant American multinational company -- to set up the arrangements such that I
operate in the free-enterprise sector. In fact, it's often beneficial to the company because it relieves them
of obligations like withholding, a lot of admin, and they can easily get rid of me whenever they want to. Y

I find the sense of living free and prospering exhilarating! I have a strong "beat-the-system" streak and I
certainly enjoy not having to kowtow to terrocrats -- and for more than two decades, never having even
one penny "deducted" or "withheld" from my earnings! Y

Of course, there are risks involved. You have to be more careful what you say and do. You have to
guard your back. For those who are risk-averse, the Economic Means to Freedom may be inappropriate.
Possibly, you should follow other freedom strategies. Y

On the other hand, operating "outside the system" tends to reduce certain risks. People "in the system"
report all kinds of information about themselves to the terrocrats. „hey are also reported on by their
"employers," insurance companies, stock brokers, doctors, etc. So if you're "in the system," terrocrats
tend to have lots of information they can use against you. In contrast, terrocrats often have very little
information concerning people "outside the system." Y

ëü
So, if you want to live in accordance with your philosophy of freedom -- living free and prospering -- even
make a fortune! -- then I suggest you seriously consider the Economic Means to Freedom. Y

As a starting point I suggest you subscribe to the Free World Order

Most people take it for granted that in order to earn the wherewithal to survive, to get ahead in the world,
to become accepted and successful in the eyes of family and friends, you have to work, do something
useful, produce products and services of value to others, and so forth. Y

„here are of course alternatives. You could become a "professional welfare recipient." Or you could
become a professional criminal... or a bureaucrat... or even a politician!Y

„here are two basic ways to obtain the wherewithal to survive. „he first is to produce it. „he second is to
"steal" it. Why work like a slave to produce or provide useful products and services if you can simply
"steal" what you need? Y

Well, you don't "steal" because others might not like it. „hey might retaliate. „hey might "steal" back from
you. „hey might even lock you up in jail.Y

An important phenomenon enters the picture here. Many people produce more than they need to
survive. Probably for a variety of reasons. During good seasons you produce extra to set something
aside you can live off during lean years. You feel more secure and successful if you've accumulated
some capital. You may even want to start your own business. Maybe you want to retire one day and live
off your savings.Y

So many people produce surpluses. Y

Some people produce large surpluses. For example, because the sun shines, plants use energy from
the sun and minerals from the soil to grow, and various human methods can be used to increase
production, one farmer can effectively produce enough food to feed 100 people.Y

„he fact that some produce surpluses creates the opportunity for others to "steal" part of the production
of producers in ways that enable everyone to survive.Y

"Stealing" can occur along a scale, spectrum, or continuum, ranging from most crude to most subtle. At
the one extreme, you hold someone up at gunpoint or you knock him unconscious or even kill him and
take what you want from him. Less crude is to enter someone's home or farm at night or when they're
absent and to surreptitiously take what you want.Y

You can also use all kinds of trickery and deception to defraud your victims. „his is what the con artist
does. Y

Or, together with others, you can form a "government" and force people to pay "taxes."Y

You can be a large property owner and "rent" part of your property to others. „hey have to work in order
to pay you "rent" and you live off the "rent."Y
Or you can own a factory or other business (you own the means of production) and provide others with
"jobs" to work for you. You effectively take part of their production as your "profit." You live off the "profit"
and they have to work for a living.Y

Somewhere along this spectrum, it ceases to be "stealing" and becomes "legitimate enterprise."Y

„o the sneak thief and con artist, it may be "legitimate" as long as you don't perpetrate physical violence
against the victim's person.Y

„o the bureaucrat, politician, and their believers and supporters, it's "legitimate" if the violence is only
used as a last resort by someone else -- the "policeman" -- out of sight, out of mind?Y

„o some people "property is theft" -- the practice of owning property is a form of "stealing." "Capitalists"
who own the means of production are "thieves exploiting the workers."Y

I'll leave it to the reader to decide where to draw the line between "stealing" and "legitimacy."Y

„he purpose of this article is to examine the "job" concept. „here's a specific skill involved in analyzing
the "job" concept. I call it "Martian analysis."Y

["Language creates spooks that get into our heads and hypnotize us." -- Robert Anton Wilson,
Introduction to „
„ (by Christopher S. Hyatt. Ph.D.) Y

Suppose a Martian came to Earth to study our economic systems. He soon finds out that on parts of
Earth there are millions of people who don't work, because the Earthlings say they have a so-called
"unemployment" problem."Y

„o the Martian this is almost incomprehensibly strange. "Why don't the millions of not-working people
work at satisfying the needs and wants of the billions with unmet needs and wants?" he asks. Y

An Earthling explains, "Well, they can't work because they don't have jobs; nobody wants to employ
them." Y

Now the Martian is really flabbergasted, "I've been all over the Universe and studied over a hundred
humanoid civilizations. And in all these other civilizations, all that people need in order to work is a brain,
one or more eyes, and one or more hands. What else can you possibly need in order to work?" Y

Earthling: "We must have a job in order to work; someone must employ us; can't you understand
something this simple?" Y

Martian: "No. What kind of a thing is this so-called "job?" Can you show me a "job?" Can you
demonstrate to me how it enables someone to work?" Y

Earthling: "No, you don't understand. A job isn't a thing... it's a... it's a..." Y

Martian: "Is it perhaps an illusion? I've come across many illusions in the Universe, but this one seems to
be one of the strangest of all!" Y

"And what about this "employment" thing you talk about? What's that?" Y
Earthling: "Well, you see, in order to work you have to get someone to employ you." Y

Martian: "„his sounds strange. What does someone do to you when he "employ's" you." Y

Earthling: "He gives you work to do." Y

Martian: "I don't understand. Everywhere in the Universe I've visited, "work" isn't a thing that can be
given; it's an activity, what you do." Y

Earthling: "It's not that simple. An employer gives you things like a desk, a chair, a computer, and
whatever tools you need to do your job." Y

Martian: "In every part of the Universe I've been, all that people really need in order to work is a brain,
one or more eyes, and one or more hands. Surely, people can either make the equipment, tools, or
whatever they need to work more efficiently, or they can acquire them through exchange." Y

Earthling: "But what if everyone in a region is impoverished and there are no wealthy capitalist pig
employers to provide tools and equipment?" Y

Martian: "If you go back far enough in history, you'll get to a time when all humans were poor. How was
wealth created in the first place?" Y

"I'll give you a clue. Your Sun shines. Every day it showers vastly more energy on you than you can
possibly use. You enjoy a huge surplus of energy. You can use some of that energy to grow things and
much more besides." Y

"In the rest of the Universe, the first principle of economics is that Energy plus Brain produces Wealth --
provided you produce more than you consume. Because of the huge free surplus energy you get from
your Sun every day, anyone and everyone (at least those with functioning brains, eyes, and hands) can
produce a surplus and become wealthy." Y

Earthling: "My mind is spinning! I'll have to think about all this." Y

Moral: „he language you use can have a profound effect on how you perceive the world, how you think
about it, and how you act in relation to it. Y

 "c

„he words "job" and "employment" and the illusions they engender may have debilitating effects on
those who blindly accept them. Here we have an important "Human Failure Program" that plays a major
role in keeping people poor and stuck in what they call their "jobs." (Nevertheless, because much
economic activity is organized on the basis of so-called "jobs," some of us may have to play the "job"
game -- at least temporarily -- to survive and, hopefully, get back on our economic feet.) Y

„he "job"/"employment" illusion has far-reaching implications. Because many people believe they need
"jobs" to work gainfully, and "jobs are scarce," their only alternatives seems to be "government
handouts" and crime. Jeremy Bentham wrote, "Out of one foolish word may start a thousand daggers."
(x
 „
! by C.K. Ogden.) Y

From the perspective of the wealthy "employer," it's wonderful that people think they need "jobs" in order
to work and they have to come to someone like me to "employ" them. It gives me power over them. It
makes me strong and them weak. „he more powerful I am, and the weaker they are, the less I have to
pay them, and the more I profit! Y

„his isn't a criticism of profit as such. „here are many "employers" who do their best to play the business
game such that their "employees" enjoy the best benefits possible while keeping the business viable,
particularly considering the restrictions and restraints imposed by terrocrats.Y

„errocrats (terrorist bureaucrats or coercive political agents) also use the "job"/"employment" illusion
extensively to increase their power. In general, they succeed in dominating people by dictating in
thousands of ways with a plethora of "laws and regulations" many aspects of "jobs" and "employment."Y

For many of us seeking greater freedom, one of the first practical steps we need to take might be to
escape from the "job"/"employment" trap. „o find out how you may be able to do this, subscribe to the

In conception, 'Freedom Ship' seems to be one of the most advanced
freedom projects I know of. It's a project to build a huge ship, three times as
long as the Empire State Building is tall -- 4310 ft. long, 7u5ft. wide. It will
have a superstructure, rising u5 stories above its deck. It will have space for
at least 50,000 residents, 15,000 personnel, and u0,000 guests and visitors.Y

It will be powered by 100 diesel engines and will circle the world once every two years. About u5% of the
time it will be underway at sea, and about 75% of the time it will be holding in-place in coastal waters
near major cities.Y

Other features of 'Freedom Ship':Y

× A commercial center with a free-enterprise economy.Y

× Residential and commercial condominiums.Y
× High-quality, fresh food and clean water.Y
× $u00,000,000 hospital.Y
× Superb safety and security.Y
× Excellent banking and communication facilities.Y
× 3, 00 ft. airplane landing strip.Y
× Fleet of commuter aircraft and hydrofoils.Y
× Duty/tax-free shopping.Y
× Educational, recreational, and entertainment facilities.Y
× Modest cost of living.Y

Check out http://www.freedomship.com/ for more details. [If you decide to reserve a condominium -- no
obligation -- no funds being solicited -- please specify "Boston „ea Party II-FM" as your Sales Agent.Y

I don't know whether the people behind 'Freedom Ship' have their act sufficiently together to succeed.
It's a lot easier to put up a sophisticated website than to build a huge ship. Nevertheless, I'm highly
impressed with what I've seen so far and with my limited contact with people involved in the project.Y

I've heard a rumor that 'Popular Mechanics' is working on an extensive article on 'Freedom Ship,'
possibly with a picture on the front cover. If this comes about, it could boost interest and reservations
substantially.Y

„his is the second in a series of articles on the Economic Means to Freedom. „he first article covered
three principles: (1) Opportunity Gap; (u) „hree Economic Sectors -- public, private, and free-enterprise;
and (3) Free-Enterprise Institutions. You can access the first article here.Y

„he Opportunity Gap is the difference between where people are and where they could or should be.
„he essence of the Economic Means to Freedom is to provide people with the means to bridge the
Opportunity Gap -- to advance from where they are to where they could or should be.Y

If 'Freedom Ship' succeeds, it will achieve this in several respects. Residents will enjoy a high quality of
life with superb safety and security, while traveling the world in style and comfort. Both residents and
businesses will enjoy the absence of terrocrats(coercive political agents or terrorist bureaucrats) and the
benefits of free-enterprise.Y

'Freedom Ship' could also become an outstanding example of a Free-Enterprise Institution -- the
Economic Means to Freedom in practice. It may become a model for others to emulate.Y

!x
„he fourth principle of the Economic Means to Freedom is that money can buy freedom. It can buy you
the freedom to live where you want to and to travel when and where you want to. Money can buy a
group of people the freedom to build a 'Freedom Ship' and to escape the tyranny of terrocrats.Y

Money can buy you freedom from having to work to earn a living. „o a considerable extent, money can
buy you freedom from illness and disease. Money can buy you the freedom of a longer life. Within a few
decades, money may even be able to buy freedom from death.Y

Consider the possibility that using money in profitable ways to expand freedom -- the Economic Means
to Freedom -- is by far the most powerful freedom strategy. „his is because it can set a snowball effect
in motion. Part of the profits can be used to increase or expand freedom-promoting activities and
enterprises in profitable ways. „hese profits can be used in turn to expand further...Y

Money can probably buy freedom to a greater extent than even I have begun to imagine...Y

„his will become more evident as we expand free-enterprise currency, banking, and barter institutions,
such as those mentioned in the first article of this series.Y

"If you can avoid it, never play on the other guy's field, by the other guy's rules, or with the other guy's
ball. He didn't design
system to give the advantage. Remember that organisms defending their
own territory are twice as effective as an intruding attacker." -- L. Neil SmithY

Here's the fifth main principle of the Economic Means to Freedom. When we oppose something, or try to
reform it, we usually encounter opposition. Our effort elicits an almost automatic counter-effort. In
practicing the Economic Means to Freedom, we don't attempt to change, oppose, reform, or overthrow
any political or economic systems. We simply create our own voluntary alternatives in the free-enterprise
sector.Y

'Freedom Ship' is an excellent example of this principle in action.Y

„he bogus power of terrocrats depends on the support from their victims. In practicing the Economic
Means to Freedom, we find practical ways to legally, elegantly, and safely withdraw our support. „he
power of terrocrats is tenuous -- largely based on illusion, flimsy, fragile, and of little substance.Y

Understanding this dynamic of human power enabled Mohandas Gandhi to play a major role in the
defeat of the armed might of the British Empire without firing a shot. „he East German terrocrats, backed
by 300,000 Russian troops, could not keep the Berlin wall standing, once a critical mass of people just
said "NO!" to the system. When the victims of the Soviet terrocrats withdrew their support, the Soviet
Empire collapsed overnight.Y

Because of gradual currency debasement (inflation), budget deficits, property seizures, Nazi-like
terrorism (like Waco and Ruby Creek), fragile schemes like "social security" and "medicare," and other
criminal violations, terrocrats are in the process of destroying their own coercive power systems. „hey
are gradually losing credibility and control.Y

„he example of 'Freedom Ship' may set in motion a whole range of initiatives whereby many more
people find practical and profitable ways to withdraw their support from terrocrats. Y

A basic theme of the Economic Means to Freedom is "building freedom" rather than "fighting for
freedom" or "fighting against tyranny." I believe that if a critical mass of people were to focus on building
freedom, corrupt political systems will eventually lose their power and influence.Y

A basic theme of the Economic Means to Freedom is "building freedom" rather than "fighting for

I don't know how many people would constitute such a critical mass, nor how influential their economic
power would have to be, in order for their combined economic activities to have a decisive impact on the
expansion of freedom, on one hand, and the decline of the power and influence of coercive political
systems, on the other hand.Y

My examples may have created the impression that I advocate peaceful resistance. Let me emphasize
that peaceful resistance may be appropriate for certain people in certain situations, but it does not fit at
all into the context of the No-Opposition Strategy.Y

Peaceful resistance is a form of opposition, which tends to elicit counter-effort. It involves forms of
"fighting for freedom" or "fighting against tyranny."Y

„here are various styles of practicing the Economic Means to Freedom. „he most powerful is .
You operate in such a manner that you and your economic activities are effectively invisible to terrocrats.
„here is no protesting terrocrat actions; no resistance to terrocrat actions; no fighting terrocrats in court.Y

Protesting, resisting, and fighting may have a place in the Economic Means to Freedom, but have no
place in the No-Opposition Strategy. „here are times to take a stand, and times to take evasive action.
„here are also times to just pay the terrocrats what they demand, because that's the least evil.Y

In practicing the Economic Means to Freedom for a quarter of a century, I've paid terrocrats around $500
in "fines," maybe $5,000 - $10,000 for "car registration" and "driver's licenses," and around $10,000 -
$15,000 in various "sales taxes."Y

No terrocrat has ever used a gun against me, or threatened to do so. No terrocrat has ever pointed a
gun at me. „heir threats have always come in the form of . As indicated in the first article of this
series, the practitioner of the Economic Means to Freedom may face, in general, fewer risks from
terrocrats than people "in the system."Y

I've received a few threatening letters from terrocrats. In some cases I paid the "fine" demanded; in other
cases I sent them a reply that resulted in them deciding that it would be more profitable for them to
pursue other, easier victims or "marks."Y

By making the above payments, I supported the terrocrats. You could argue that, to the extent I paid
terrocrats, I practiced the Economic Means to Slavery. „his suggests the sixth principle of the Economic
Means to Freedom.Y

/

„he sixth principle of the Economic Means to Freedom is that you don't have to suddenly switch from
one extreme to the other. You can shift into the free-enterprise sector in stages. You can
compartmentalize your life and affairs so your assets, earnings, and economic activities are partially in
the private (or even public!) sector and partially in the free-enterprise sector.Y

[„he first article in this series explains the distinction between the three different economic sectors.Y
Freedom „echnology consists of the practical knowledge, methods, and skills to live free; the street-
smart know-how to outwit and run rings around terrocrats; the means to protect your earnings and
assets from terrocrats and other thieves and robbers. Freedom „echnology enables you to legally,
elegantly, and safely shift some or all of your economic activities into the free-enterprise sector.Y

Some of the practitioners of the Economic Means to Freedom, who facilitate this shift, may become the
millionaires and billionaires of the next century. Emerging free-enterprise institutions, such as those
mentioned in the first article of this series, are likely to play an expanding role in the economic shift into
the free-enterprise sector.Y

An important characteristic of the shift into the free-enterprise sector is that as it grows, it becomes
easier for new people to join the shift. „he emerging financial free-enterprise institutions (see first article
in series) already make it much easier now, than it was 10 years ago, to shift into the free-enterprise
sector. And as the shift grows, so do the number of free-enterprise businesses. „his increases the
opportunities for freedom lovers to work in or with businesses that don't kowtow to terrocrats.Y

„he practice -- as opposed to the theory, or communication without action -- of anarcho-capitalism is
synonymous with what I've been calling the Economic Means to Freedom. „he practice of anarcho-
capitalism is also the practice of the Economic Means to Freedom.Y

So what might be "„en things you can do to live an anarcho-capitalist life now!"?Y

I've been a practicing anarcho-capitalist for more than u5 years. Yet I find the above question tough to
answer. We're all in "different places" regarding our marketable skills, financial situation, knowledge of
practical freedom, willingness to take risks, etc.Y

So let me make a list of more than ten things. From this list, select 10 things you think might be
appropriate for you, then prioritize them into a sequence that is most appropriate for your individual
situation, and then do them!Y

1. Identify or develop some activity that enables you to earn money (in an honest manner) that is
effectively invisible to terrocrats (terrorist bureaucrats or coercive political agents). Examples: become a
professional gambler; become a successful trader or investor, utilizing financial structures like offshore
corporations, trusts, and/or foundations; sell "how-to" information related to your areas of expertise;
organize seminars/workshops related to your areas of expertise; publish a newsletter; develop a course
on practical anarcho-capitalism and market/deliver it via Internet. Check out Loompanics Unlimited for
more ideas.Y

u. Read the book „

" # $$
by Don Lancaster. „his book has partially
inspired me to create a number of "money machines" that provide me with income streams invisible to
terrocrats. Check out his website „he Guru's Lair, for an example of an Internet-based business. Also
check out Dr. Hewitt- Gleeson's School of „hinking.Y

3. Study the 'Millionaire Reports' which contain a wealth of money-making principles not available
anywhere else.Y

4. Organize a group of people to meet, share information, and brainstorm the specific things each
anarcho-capitalist individual might do. Ideas for new anarcho-capitalist businesses may be generated.

1 . Learn to operate in a manner such that that you focus on taking actions under your direct control.
You want to do things that are directly linked to the results you wish to achieve. If you have to beg others
to change their behavior in order for you to succeed, you tend to lose your power. For example, if like
Wes Burt you beg "the establishment" to take notice of Peter H. Rossi's "Iron Law" or Burt's "„eflon
„opic," the most likely result is that you render yourself powerless. (By his own admission, Wes has
been going at it since 199, without producing any results!)Y

19. Observe the results -- or lack of results -- you produce and learn from them. Become more flexible.
Experiment. Change strategies and tactics until you find what works. And keep improving that. (During

E-Gold and Alternative Currency FAQ. Y

http://www.buildfreedom.com/economic/eco_10.html

[Note: „his article was originally published on 11/4/97 as "Alternative Currency System." It was
extensively revised on 10/u/9 . It has now been further revised. I now proposed a "free software," "open
source," "multi-currency" system, as explained below.Y

! Y

„he Economic Means to Freedom is one among many strategies that any individual could follow to
expand freedom. Nothing in this article should be regarded as a suggestion that other freedom strategies
should be changed or abandoned. „his is a proposal for a complementary money system to be
developed, launched, and implemented as a matter of urgency.Y

One of the reasons for urgency is that the international monetary/financial system could be a house of
cards. „he banksters in control may be able to prop up the system to recover from the current "Asian
crisis," but they may not be able to keep their system going indefinitely.Y

„he urgency is exemplified by Economics professor Michel Chossudovsky's article "Financial Warfare" in
which he says: Y

"Humanity is undergoing in the post-Cold War era an economic crisis of unprecedented scale leading to
the rapid impoverishment of large sectors of the World population. „he plunge of national currencies in
virtually all major regions of the World has contributed to destabilizing national economies while
precipitating entire countries into abysmal poverty.Y

...[„his Worldwide crisis marks the demise of central banking meaning the derogation of national
economic sovereignty and the inability of the national State to control money creation on behalf of
society.Y

...„his ongoing pillage of central bank reserves, however, is by no means limited to developing
countries..."Y

Click here for the complete article.Y

I propose the development of a "free software," "open source," "multi-currency" system. By "free
software" I mean that the software is made available free of charge to anyone who wants to use it as
they wish. By "open source" I mean that the source code is made available free of charge to anyone who
wants it and they are free to change it as they see fit. „his follows the Linux Development Model -- see
the Freedom „echnology Resource Directory - Linux, particularly 'What is Free Software?'; '„he benefits
of "open source" software'; and '„he Cathedral and the Bazaar' by Eric S. Raymond.Y

Note: Such a system has been developed: lucreY

By "multi-currency" I mean that the system can be used for a multitude of kinds of currencies or forms of
money. If someone wants to use the system for a kind of currency or money the software doesn't cater
for, it should be relatively easy to change the system or add modules to allow for the new currency or
money. Y

„he idea is that all over the world groups of people will set up and operate their own local currency
and/or money systems, using the basic software provided by this project. „hey are free to adapt the
software as they wish and use it any way they like. Y

Ideally, there will also be modules that enable members of any local system to transact with members of
any other local system. „he most practical way to achieve this might be to have one or more
currency/money types common to all or most local systems, e.g., silver, gold, and maybe a few national
currencies. Members of local systems would be able to exchange their local currency/money for silver,
gold, etc., which could then be used to transact with members of other local systems. Such an
arrangement would make it possible for people all over the world to transact with each other, without the
need for any central organization or clearinghouse.Y

„his is the fifth in a series of articles on the Economic Means to Freedom. „he first four articles are
available at this website. „he emphasis of the Economic Means to Freedom is on: (a) Building freedom,
rather than "fighting tyranny" or "fighting for freedom"; (b) Bringing about a massive shift of economic
power into the hands of individuals.Y

ü „his article constitutes the dissemination of information in accordance with the right to free
speech. Nothing in this article is to be interpreted as legal, accounting, tax, currency, banking, or
investment advice. Anyone seeking such advice should consult a properly qualified and accredited

"„he pinnacle of power today is the power to issue money." -- „homas H. Greco Jr., author of ·
$ÿ
   -- see Appendix u.Y

One of the kinds of money the new system caters for could be called the "Riegel." Each member in the
Riegel system has the power to issue Riegels. Riegel called this the "individual money power" -- see
Appendix 1. E.C. Riegel described his proposed money system in „
·a
 !
' $. Y

Riegel called his type of system a "split barter system." Currently there are numerous "barter clubs" in
operation. Strictly speaking, they are generally not barter clubs in that they utilize some "barter currency"
as medium of exchange. Some call this type of trade "reciprocal trade." It is characterized by utilizing a
medium of exchange other than those issued by coercive political agencies. Y

LE„Systems use a form of money similar to the Riegel. It should be possible to use the new system to
operate a more or less standard LE„System (whose money unit is conceptually close to the Riegel). Y
Money is created when an individual wants to buy something, but doesn't have the necessary Riegels to
pay for it. In this case, a transaction takes place, the buyer's net balance decreases, and the seller's net
balance increases.Y

Money is redeemed ("destroyed") when a buyer with a positive balance buys from a seller with a
negative balance.Y

A principle of the system is that the total Riegel balances of everyone in the system will always be zero --
the total positive balances always equal the total negative balances. Hence the Riegel is virtually
inflation-proof. (WBE, the entity that operates the Riegel system (paragraph 3 below), could effectively
inflate the Riegel by itself running up a large negative balance. So there also needs to be limits on WBE
itself -- see paragraph below.)Y

„he purchasing power with respect to particular goods and services, and the exchange value with
respect to particular currencies, of the Riegel will also tend to fluctuate because of other factors.Y

„he Riegel is backed by: (a) An initial 0% guarantee -- paragraph u; (b) „he expectation that those with
negative balances will produce and sell products and services to eliminate their negative balances; (c)
Limits on negative balances -- paragraph ; (d) Default insurance -- paragraph 9; (e) Allowing negative
balances based on the established trustworthiness of debtors -- paragraph 10; (f) „he pledging of assets
as collateral to safeguard large negative balances -- paragraph 11.Y

„he Riegel is intended to serve as a standard of value, a medium of exchange, and a unit of account. It
is not intended to be used as a store of value. Members of the Riegel economy can use precious metals
and other instruments as stores of value.Y

Important question: Why not just use gold as money? Why do we need a Riegel or similar system? „his
question is addressed in Appendix 3.Y

For more information on E.C. Riegel and alternative money/ currencies, see Appendix u.Y

)6=

„he initial "reference value" of the Riegel could be defined at about FRN 1.00 (US$1.00). During the first
six months of operation of the system, WBE could guarantee that anyone with a positive Riegel balance
can exchange those Riegels at a rate of FRN 0. 0 for each Riegel.Y

In Appendix 4, I give three suggestions for defining the Riegel reference value. „he definition I regard as
most functional is defining the Riegel reference value in terms of the U.S. Consumer Price Index,
specifically one Riegel = CPI / 10. „his yields: Jan 9 : One Riegel = 11. / 10 = $1.0100 Feb 9 : One
Riegel = 11.9 / 10 = $1.0119 Mar 9 : One Riegel = 1u.u / 10 = $1.013 Apr 9 : One Riegel = 1u.5
/ 10 = $1.015 See Appendix 4 for more details and qualifications.Y

I propose that the software be developed by a group of individuals who form a business or company
called, e.g., World Business Exchange (WBE), and that they follow the "free software" and "open source"
policies of the Linux development model as indicated above. Y

I further propose that WBE, in addition to being the coordinator of the software development, also
operates a WBE money/currency system. WBE is responsible for the rules of this system, managing and
operating the system, maintaining a system to determine creditworthiness of members, processing
transactions, etc. -- see below. Y

WBE could be "domiciled" in a venue, such as Belize, Antigua, Anguilla, etc., which provides the
greatest economic freedom, privacy, and security. WBE should have no physical office or assets in its
venue of "domicile." Y

WBE needs to operate its money/currency system in a profitable manner. „he profits could come from
attracting visitors to its website and promoting certain opportunities to them, such as BIG International
and Stockgeneration. Other income sources are suggested below. Y

,6
Any individual, group, business, or company is eligible for membership, provided they satisfy criteria to
be determined by WBE. One of the criteria might be that coercive agencies not be eligible for
membership. Membership should be free. („he membership for a company in a typical barter club costs
several hundred dollars per year. Any system such as WBE which charges membership fees is likely to
eventually be outcompeted by a system that charges no membership fees.)Y

Of course, anyone (including coercive agencies) is free to use the WBE software in any way they wish to
set up their own systems with whatever membership requirements and rules they wish.Y

-6 =x#9=x:Añ
(It seems that GVB is no longer online. In any case, this Section is only relevant to the Riegel part of the
WBE system.)Y

See http://www.gvb.org/ and http://www.nellapages.org/. I propose that GVB be used as a model to

develop the WBE system. Anyone interested in playing a role in the development of the WBE/Riegel
system should study all aspects of GVB.Y

Following are the major differences between WBE and GVB: (a) With WBE, every member has the
power to issue money. With GVB there is a central money-issuing authority. (b) „he nella (GVB money
unit) is not convertible into commonly-used currencies. „he Riegel is freely convertible into anything
else. (c) „he nella economy will be isolationist with a limited appeal. „he Riegel economy, which easily
integrates economic activities between the Riegel and commonly-used currencies, should have a much
greater appeal and offer vastly greater convenience. (d) WBE charges demurrage (negative interest,
explained below) on certain positive balances, thereby encouraging economic activity and accelerating
the speed of circulation.Y

(„he GVB system is currently "on ice," but you can open an account and do a few other things.)Y

.6!&
Any member of the WBE system should be free to make a market between, on the one hand, Riegels
and other WBE money/currencies; and on the other hand, gold, silver, $s, DMs, etc. From the point of
view of the WBE system, gold, silver, $s, DMs, etc. are simply products like any other, so no special
provision has to be made in the WBE computer system to achieve convertibility. Y

„he e-gold system could play a role in convertibility in that any WBE member could open an e-gold
account. „wo members who both have e-gold accounts could use them to buy/sell Riegels and other
WBE money/currencies from/to each other. Y

A major drawback of practically all other "barter systems" (more accurately called "split barter systems"
or "business trade exchanges") and alternative currency systems is that their currencies are often not
convertible and that some members get stuck with large positive balances they can't easily spend on
products and services they need or want. WBE convertibility eliminates this problem and widens
potential acceptance in the marketplace.Y

16ü

(„his may apply to parts of the WBE system.) I propose that a "demurrage" (negative interest) be
charged on positive Riegel balances, on a sliding scale. „he purposes of demurrage include
encouraging trade and economic activity and promoting long-range thinking. For more details on
demurrage, including historical examples, see:Y

× http://www.transaction.net/money/cc/cc04.html,Y
× http://www.transaction.net/money/cc/cc05.html, andY
× http://www.transaction.net/press/interviews/lietaer0497.html.Y

I propose the following demurrage formula for positive balances: (a) No demurrage charge on the first
Rgl 1,000, or monthly average of previous 3-months' transaction volume (MA3/3), whichever is greater;
(b) 0.5% demurrage charge on the second Rgl 1,000, or MA3/3, whichever is greater; (c) 1.0%
demurrage charge on the third Rgl 1,000, or MA3/3, whichever is greater; (d) u.0% demurrage charge on
the fourth Rgl 1,000, or MA3/3, whichever is greater; (e) 3.0% demurrage charge on any positive
balance beyond (d).Y

(„here may have to be a different formula for lending- and other financial institutions. See paragraph 11
below.)Y

I propose that no interest be charged on negative balances, making the Riegel an interest-free form of
money. (However, there needs to be default insurance to cover the risk of members leaving the system
while balances are negative, i.e., defaulting.)Y

Demurrage constitutes earnings by WBE. At the end of every month, WBE adjusts account balances to
reflect demurrage payments and receipts.Y

265 ü

Obviously, a potential weakness of the Riegel system is that someone can buy products and services,
building up a negative balance, and then dropping out of the system and/or disappearing.Y

For each member of the system, a limit negative balance can be set, depending on the creditworthiness
of the member. „his limit can be changed from time to time to reflect the changing creditworthiness of
the member, based on criteria to be determined.Y

Rules need to be specified to determine what constitutes a default. Members with negative balances are
expected to "pay off" or "produce off" their debit balances over time.Y

36ü
In the Riegel system, a negative balance comes into existence when a seller sells to a buyer who
doesn't have a sufficiently positive balance to pay for the item or service. „he seller is effectively granting
credit to the buyer.Y

I propose that default insurance be paid in respect of any additional debit to a negative balance (i.e.,
account becomes more negative) resulting from a transaction. (No default insurance is necessary when
the buyer has a sufficiently positive balance to pay for a purchase. „he amount that needs to be insured
is the extent to which the buyer's account goes negative or more negative as a result of a transaction.)Y

Sellers have responsibility in granting credit. I propose that the seller has to buy default insurance to
cover the amount involved. Rates can be determined by WBE (and other insurance companies)
depending on the trust- and creditworthiness of the buyer. WBE may grant permission to others to
provide default insurance, subject to conditions to be determined by WBE.Y
WBE will maintain a fund to cover defaults. A member who defaults is removed from the system and the
default amount is deducted from the fund. If another insurance company insured the negative balance
involved, then that company's account with WBE would be debited accordingly.Y

Sellers are free to vary their prices to recover default insurance costs. Y

'%6!
 (
A formula can be developed based on: (a) References provided by existing members; (b) Past
performance; (c) Other criteria to be determined by WBE.Y

A trust and creditworthy index could be calculated for each member and would be available to other
members.Y

''6ñ
„here needs to be provision for an individual or business to pledge assets as collateral for credit. „his
service could either be provided by WBE or by other institutions, in the form of loans.Y

People granted loans would have to pay default insurance to the lending party.Y

(A lending institution could acquire the large positive balance it requires in order to make Riegel (and/or
other money/currency) loans by, e.g., selling or pledging precious metals, national currencies, buildings,
etc. to WBE in return for Riegels (and/or other money/currency).)Y

')6ñ " & 5

„he WBE system would include a "buy register" and a "sell register" -- respectively consisting of
products/services wanted and products/ services offered. „his would make it possible for buyers and
sellers to link up.Y

A classification system will be necessary and the registers would have to be searchable.Y

WBE will eventually charge a fee for listings in the registers. „he initial listings should be free.Y

'*6! A

WBE would require a computer system to manage and operate the system. All Riegel-type transactions
should take place via Internet and should be processed by WBE. When a buyer and a seller agree to a
transaction, the buyer will submit the relevant and necessary information -- including verification details -
- to WBE, whereupon the transaction will be recorded and the necessary account balance adjustments
made, subject to limits not being exceeded. Y

Provision needs to be made for one-to-many transactions, e.g., to enable a company to pay employees. Y

„he above applies to Riegel-type money, as opposed to currency issued by an issue authority. „he WBE
software system should also cater for the latter -- see paragraph u5 below. Y

',6c (
WBE may want to allow for escrow transactions.Y

'-6

Barter clubs typically charge a fee of 10 - 15% on transactions. I recommend that WBE charge no
transaction fees. (Any system such as WBE which charges transaction fees is likely to eventually be
outcompeted by a system that charges no transaction fees.)Y
'.6B(ëxc#
(a) From demurrage charges -- see paragraph 7 above. (b) From Product/Service Listings -- see
paragraph 1u above. (c) WBE's website(s) should get many visitors -- thus WBE could sell advertising.
(d) WBE will be in a powerful position to market almost anything to its members, e.g., BIG International
and Stockgeneration.Y

'167=   97=:

„he idea of RVMs comes from http://www.gvb.org/admin/policy-plans.shtml. An RVM consists of some
code (H„ML, Java, etc.) that can be pasted onto a website. An RVM is the cyber-equivalent of a physical
vending machine. „he big benefit of an RVM is that a buyer doesn't have to go to the seller's website to
buy; he buys direct from the RVM. He also doesn't have to go to the WBE website to enter the
transaction details. „hus the RVM will make many transactions more convenient. („he buyer also
provides shipping details to the RVM.)Y

A vendor can persuade any number of website owners to place his RVMs on their websites. „he RVM
can be programmed so the website owner gets a commission for each sale. RVMs will be linked to the
WBE system, so account balances are automatically updated. RVMs will also provide valuable
marketing data to vendors.Y

„o minimize fraud, RVMs will require a high degree of security.Y

'26
A skeleton computer system needs to be developed as soon as possible, with the various percentages,
fees, etc. as variables. „hen the system needs to be simulated, using various assumptions and
parameters, to determine workability and viability.Y

'36ñ &

Communication between WBE members, and between members and WBE, needs to be encrypted,
private, and secure. WBE could provide a module enabling members to communicate to each other and
to WBE via automatic encryption, or SecureCom http://www.securecominfo.com/ could be used for this
purpose. [If you open an account, please specify "11u773B" as your sponsor.Y

WBE needs to maintain confidentiality of all transactions. WBE needs to be "domiciled" in a venue that
requires no financial reporting. „hus WBE will not do any reporting to coercive agencies.Y

If any members want to report their transactions to coercive agencies, that's up to them. A potential
problem that needs to be catered for is the eventuality of one party to a transaction wanting to report the
transaction while the other doesn't. At the time of entering into a transaction this issue needs to be
settled by mutual agreement.Y

)%6ü  ; ;

WBE, or one or more other entities, need to provide for mediation and arbitration services to settle
disputes. Y

)'6

„he WBE design team needs to analyze current barter systems, particularly those on the Internet, to
determine what additional features need to be incorporated in the WBE system.Y

))6ññ ëxc

(a) Members of other barter clubs (WBE provides huge advantages not available from the others); (b)
International traders; (c) People involved in barter and countertrade; (d) Businesses owned by freedom
lovers; (e) Freedom-loving individuals; (f) Businesses with "expiring commodities" -- hotels, airlines, radio
stations, restaurants, etc. have "expiring services" -- if the hotel room isn't rented in time, the plane seat
not sold, the radio advertising not sold, the restaurant seat not occupied, that potential revenue expires
and can never be recovered -- "expiring service" businesses are hot prospects for the WBE system; (g)
Businesses that would like to have access to an additional market for their products and services; (h)
Professionals such as doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants, consultants, etc. with "expiring time" -- if
available time isn't being paid for by a client, the potential revenue from that time is lost forever and can
never be recovered; (i) People in the alternative currency/money movement.Y

„he Riegel economy creates a greater potential market for all the above people.Y

)*6 ( ü 4

If the WBE system becomes successful, there will be many independent WBE-type systems around the
world. „hey could be organized that members of one system can trade with members of other systems.
Every sizable city could have one or several exchanges. Local members should also be able to access
the product/service registers of other exchanges. „here will also be a variety of kinds of money/currency
used by the various systems.Y

),6! !

Once WBE has become a viable operation, it will be relatively easy to organize the necessary interfaces
with existing systems to enable members to use credit cards for purchases and to withdraw cash at
A„Ms.Y

)-6! x#
„he WBE system needs to cater for an issuing authority having the ability to issue a currency, similar to
the way national currencies are issued. „he system also needs to cater for the issuance of coins and
banknotes. Furthermore, the system needs to enable members to transact via secure, anonymous digital
cash. Y

„he folks at travelzoo.com have developed an excellent method for promoting their business -- see
http://www.travelzoo.com/. Anyone can get a few free shares just by signing up. And you can get a few
more shares by persuading a few other people to sign up. („hey also address the problem of some
people signing up under more than one e-mail address in order to fraudulently obtain extra shares. GVB
experienced a similar problem -- see http://www.gvb.org/admin/policy-security.shtml.)Y

In any case, if you decide to acquire some free shares from travelzoo.com, please specify <f-
prime@buildfreedom.com> as the person who told you about them. Go to http://www.travelzoo.com/.Y

As soon as WBE has a "promotable" website, a similar system can be implemented, whereby new
members receive a number of Riegels for signing up, as well as additional Riegels for persuading others
to sign up. „he listing of Riegel businesses could also be "jump started" by initially issuing a number of
Riegels to those who list their businesses.Y

As you can imagine, launching WBE successfully will be a formidable challenge. Certain issues related

Congressman Jim GibbonsY

Dear Honorable Gentlemen,Y

During the last u0 years I have been exposing - in numerous books, publications, lectures and litigation -
the unlawful activities of the l.R.S. I have also, during this time, developed procedures that allow
Americans to protect themselves from such I.R.S./government behavior. Essentially, I have been doing
your job which is to protect the constitutional rights of your constituents - a task for which you took a
sworn oath. In conformity with that oath, l would ask you just one question, "Are there specific laws
making Americans 'liable' for and/or requiring them 'to pay' income taxes?"Y

I am herein requesting that you, individually or collectively, provide me and your constituents with the
date and time when you would be available to appear at a „own Hall meeting to be held in Las Vegas,
where you would identify those laws which specifically make Americans 'liable' for and/or requiring them
'to pay' income taxes. If no such laws exist, then there is no reason why Americans should sustain the
kind of I.R.S. harassment and abuse recently documented on "0 Minutes" and revealed in the recent
Senate hearings.Y

I will assume all costs for the „own Hall meeting and further agree to pay $50,000.00 to any charity of
your choice, if you can cite the specific laws as requested above.Y

Looking forward to your immediate reply,Y

Constitutionally yours,Y

„he eighth principle of the Economic Means to Freedom is that terrocrats and their systems are often
laughingly incompetent and inefficient. I don't think the IRS is any exception! „here are millions of people
who don't pay and who don't get in trouble.Y

As an informed individual, your chances of beating the IRS are very high. „ax attorney
Donald W. MacPherson („!, „
ë# -- 1- 00-BEA„-IRS)
calculates the chances of an individual being prosecuted in any given year being about 1
in 70,000; and the chances of being jailed at 1 in 14,000. As a general rule, the IRS
goes after the "easy pickings."Y

In reality you don't deal with the "IRS monster," but with individual bureaucrats -- often
not the most competent individuals. Once you know the major weaknesses of the IRS --
the soft belly of the monster -- you have little to fear. You don't have to passively submit to their
"taxtortion." „o the informed individual, the IRS may be a paper tiger.Y

„he year u000 date problem may spell the death knell of the IRS as it is now constituted. Not only do
they have to review u million lines of computer program code, they almost certainly have to reformat
hundreds of computer files and data bases. And they almost certainly have to write programs to convert
their data.Y

But some of the IRS terrocrats do carry guns, and they can be vicious and capricious. Some of them are
probably quite sadistic and may enjoy destroying your business and/or your life. So you have to be very
careful!Y

„he BUILDFREEDOM.COM website contains a wealth of information on dealing with bureaucrats,

including "taxtortionists."Y

"Under cross-examination by nationally prominent tax attorney Lowell H. Becraft, Jr., Ms. Jeu (expert
IRS witness) conceded that the IRS uses a secret code to classify people. Mr. Long (the defendant) was
classified by the secret code of the IRS as not liable to file a tax return or pay income tax." -- Recent

In the above amazing court case the jury agreed with the defendant -- prosecuted for willful failure to file

to certain classes of people.Y

Imagine what your life or business would be like if you didn't have to keep records for the IRS, if you
didn't have to file tax returns, if you didn't have to pay the IRS, if you didn't have to fear IRS audits.

Good-Faith Reliance Defense -- You have Sovereign Individual Rights when it comes to taxes. What if
you honestly can conclude in good faith, based on expert legal advice and U.S. Supreme Court
decisions, that you personally have no obligation to file returns and pay income taxes?Y

Of course, everyone should obey the law. Anyone who is liable to file and pay income taxes should do
so. But what if you personally come to the good-faith decision that such statutes do not apply to you?Y

What we mean, in part, by Freedom „echnology is practical methods by which to live free. What if there
exists a proven, lawful method for you to be free from many taxes?Y

Many freedom groups through the years have offered information on tax freedom. Some of the methods
advocated, while interesting, probably are not always effective. I believe the Reliance Defense Method,
properly applied in good faith, is one of the most effective tax freedom strategies yet devised. It is based
on U.S. Supreme Court decisions such as Cheek v U.S., 111 S.Ct. 04 (1991).Y

„he Cheek decision says, in pertinent part: "If the defendant had a subjective good faith belief, no matter
how unreasonable, that he was not required to file a tax return, the government cannot establish that the
defendant acted willfully." „he Reliance Defense Method is covered in detail in 'Report #„L1G'.Y

Most people can probably save 1000's of dollars per year with this method. Some people can likely save
tens of thousands of dollars per year. Now, it should be noted that all actions you take must be in good
faith. „his means you should never call yourself a "tax protester" or say that you don't have to obey the
law; these statements would demonstrate bad faith.Y

You do not challenge the right of the Legislature to pass tax statutes and regulations. But, if after (1)
getting advice letters from licensed attorneys and CPA's and (u) studying U.S. Supreme Court decisions
yourself, you come personally to the honest, good faith subjective belief that you personally are not
required to file and pay, you're in a position of power. „his method has proven itself -- when properly
applied.Y

„he most important element of the Reliance Defense Method is that you must have at least one letter
from an attorney, licensed at the time of writing the letter, addressed to you personally. In general,
appellate courts have held that reliance on an attorney's professional advice (or U.S. Supreme Court
decisions) absolutely shows good faith as a matter of law. 'Report „L1G' contains a listing of attorneys
and CPA's willing to write such opinion letters for you, personally.Y

If you would like to know the bottom line of why this method is so powerful even though the tax man
hates it: If you truly in good faith believe, based on expert legal advice that you don't have to file, then it
doesn't even matter whether it was a reasonable belief or not! You beat the IRS because ALL YOU
HAVE „O SHOW IS „HA„ YOU HONES„LY IN GOOD FAI„H BELIEVED „HE EXPER„ ADVICE. „his
is quite effective -- all you need to learn is HOW to study and obtain advice such that you might be able
to reach and hold such honest good-faith beliefs.Y

Note that, in his advertisement above, Irwin Schiff is offering $50,000.00 to charity, if the "honorable
gentlemen" addressed are able to cite any "specific laws making Americans 'liable' for and/or requiring
them 'to pay' income taxes."Y

Such studying and obtaining advice is a brilliant application of Individual Sovereignty that you can apply
right now. „he methodology meshes perfectly with my emphasis on Personal Power -- 'Report #„L10' --
in which you exercise your own personal solutions, rather than try to change the beliefs of others. After
all, all that matters for you personally to use this method is that you develop a good-faith personal belief
concerning the tax man. And the real bottom line is that the probability is high that you can make it work
for you!Y

„here are a number of people like Irwin Schiff, who advocate a range of different approaches to dealing
with the IRS. Any of these approaches can be considerably strengthened by bolstering them with the
Reliance Defense Method.Y

You simply cannot afford to miss out on this powerful application of Freedom „echnology!Y

Imagine that every month you earn $5,000, $10,000, or more, without having to do a great deal of work.
Suppose you've created or developed several sources of such earnings (multiple income streams), so
that if one or two of them dries up, you still earn more than enough from the others to survive
comfortably.Y

Suppose your main interest in life is to work at something like promoting freedom, spreading extropian
ideas, playing golf, traveling to exotic places, lying on the beach, concentrating on your personal
development, reading 50 great books, etc. However, you have to work eight hours a day, five days a
week at some "job" ("just over broke") in order to survive. Your situation could even be such that your
earnings are insufficient to pay the bills and your wife or husband also has to work at some "job."Y

It's almost as if (by accident or design) the "economic system" is such that most people can't escape
from the "wage-slave trap" of earning just enough to survive for most of their productive lives, i.e., for a
period of 30, 40, even 50 years.Y

One of the major reasons why so many people struggle to financially keep their heads above water is
(&;& ( ; # 6 „he systems
are such that those who sit on top can effectively steal out of the pockets and savings of everyone at the
bottom of the systems. „hey steal through inflation and other means that are almost completely invisible
to most victims. „he result is that vast numbers of people, for all practical purposes, are
& .Y

So, if you're in the wage-slave trap, how do you escape to achieve financial freedom? I'll return to this
question later.Y

Meanwhile, suppose: (1) You live in a part of the world where everyone enjoys a great deal of freedom
but you have to work long hours and have hardly enough money to pay for food; or (u) Your environment
contains extreme restraints on freedom but you have so much money that you don't have to work, you've
escaped from the local tax system, you can buy practically anything you want, and you can travel pretty
well wherever and whenever you want.Y

Under which scenario are you better off?Y

Now suppose you're someone who believes in educating people, promoting freedom, and changing the
system, and: (1) You have to work long hours to earn your living and you don't have much spare cash; or
(u) You have so much money and "automatic income streams" that you have to spend very little time on
working for a living.Y

Under which scenario can you be more effective at educating people, promoting freedom, and changing
the system?Y

Upon reflection, it should become evident that having money and organizing your affairs so you don't
have to work for money tends to increase your freedom and provide you more time to do whatever you
like.Y

ë
   & C
At my disposal I have a number of ways and methods to put cash in my pocket to pay the bills. I call it
"money from heaven!" One of them is to transfer money from my e-gold to my FreeCash account and
from there to my A„M card. „hen I go to an A„M machine and withdraw cash. If I don't have enough e-
gold, I could have a market maker send me a check in return for some OSGold or Evocash. (I can also
use a market maker to convert OSGold or Evocash into e-gold.)Y

Imagine that there are many thousands of freedom-oriented people around the world who have achieved
financial freedom and independence and are helping others to do the same -- so that our numbers are
exploding. What impact might we eventually have on the world?Y

In evaluating prospective business opportunities to get involved in, I apply a number of criteria:Y

(1) Are the principals honorable and trustworthy? Although we can never be totally sure about this -- and
the honesty of some is limited by a threshold (when the money amounts expand beyond the threshold,
honesty flees out the back door).Y

(u) Does the business provide useful and worthwhile products and/or services? (Note: „here are several
companies who have developed highly profitable computerized systems for trading stocks, commodities,
and other financial instruments).Y

(3) Is the business well-organized and do they have competent personnel and systems?Y

(4) How potentially profitable is the compensation plan for Agents? I've been involved with dozens of
companies and have examined many hundreds more. If you're good at marketing (or willing and able to
acquire marketing skills), you can greatly reduce your risk and increase your earnings.Y

   (( & )2
   4 & E1%;%%% ; # 6
""(((6 6 " " F26Y

(5) How easy is it to market the business? Some businesses are easier to market than others. In
general, if people can make money without having to recruit or sell, the business is much easier to
market.Y

() Do they have a satisfactory support system for Agents?Y

(7) Do they have any kind of successful track record?Y

( ) Is it a real free-enterprise business? By "real free-enterprise" I mean "operating as far as possible

outside the jurisdiction of coercive, predatory political agencies." Most of the businesses I get involved
with take proper steps to avoid and escape the tentacles of "Big Brother."Y

(9) Can they competently handle attacks? If they are based particularly in the US or the UK, they may
not be in a position to withstand "Big Brother" attacks.Y

(10) Does the company provide good earnings growth potential to participants?Y

Hale v. Henkel, u01 U.S. 43 at 47 (1905)Y

Despite the pervasive reach of politicians, bureaucrats, and their armed police, it is possible ² even in
"modern America" with its extensive Ô of freedom ² to live your life and conduct your affairs in
accordance with the Hale v. Henkel ruling. In fact, it is possible to run your business according to these
same principles ² if you know how! Y

 &ñ 7 c @Y

Now let me give you an example of how much money can be made in the real free-enterprise sector.
„wo of the reasons why the real free-enterprise sector tends to be so profitable is that it is free from
taxation and also free from government regulation. Believe it or not, it is possible today in America to
operate certain types of businesses in accordance with the principles of the U.S. Constitution as
expressed in Hale v. Henkel!Y

One such business is World Network Holdings ² a company operating in the real free-enterprise sector.
Simply by promoting WNH to my friends, contacts, and customers, my company has earned the
following:Y

[Please keep in mind that the following amounts indicate our earnings for each given month -- in other
words, the amounts are cumulative! For example, we actually earned $71,u4. 1 from WNH in June

„he earnings formula was changed in July 199 resulting in a decline of earnings of about 50%. Soon
after that, the earnings dropped to zero. WNH subsequently went through several metamorphoses and
via a "reverse takeover" part of it has become a public corporation listed on NASDAQ. (See „he Harry
Plott Saga - Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and Part V for the story on WNH.) „his is the bad news. Y

„he good news is that there are other real-free-enterprise companies you can use to provide you with
exponentially growing earnings -- see Private Programs and „he Importance of Anchor Programs.Y

c #Y

I believe in what I call "„he Economic Means to Freedom." „he most important factor determining your
level of freedom is how much money you have, how much you earn, and your ability to keep your money
safe from the marauding hands of politicians, bureaucrats, and their armed police. If you live your life as
an economic "subject" or "slave" of others, they will drain away both your wealth and your opportunities.Y

Suppose there were actions you could take to increase your personal freedom, while also increasing the
personal freedom of those around you ² and at the same time these actions make you money, and
make money for those around you.Y

One of our satisfied Associates wrote to me:Y

"Dear Mr. Mann:Y

I have been interested in, and associated with Build Freedom for around two years. I have read
considerable material by you and others, concerning Freedom „echnology.Y

I am 1 years old and have experienced a full life, however 5 of those years have been a struggle to
maintain a decent lifestyle for my wife and three children. I started three or four small business ventures.
We were severely handicapped at every turn, by the bureaucrats. „en years ago my daughter took over
the business. She fights the system every day.Y

My wife and I retired at 5, and started to draw S.S. benefits. So for 1 years we have beat the system.Y

Starting two years ago we began to apply parts of the Freedom „echnology. We can¶t withdraw from
S.S. and several others for obvious reasons. (
& 6 [emphasis added Many thanks to you, World Network
Holdings, and several others. We have formed our family Pure Contract „rust, and now will be able to
help the children."Y

Freedom „echnology consists of the practical knowledge, methods, and skills to live free; the practical
knowledge to make money in the real free-enterprise sector; the means to outwit the bureaucrats and
their ilk who seek to curb your freedom and steal your money.Y

„he Economic Means to Freedom involves people shifting their economic resources and activities into
the real free-enterprise sector. „o the extent that this happens freedom lovers get wealthier, while the
political tyrants gradually lose the financial support base on which their coercive power depends. „he
theory is that if a critical mass of people and businesses shift into the real free-enterprise sector, the
power of the political tyrants will eventually collapse ² just like the Berlin Wall fell when a critical mass
of people said "No!" to it.Y

Anyway, be all this as it may, the important thing for you is to make money and keep the money you
make.Y

„here are enormous potential freedom resources in the world:Y

„he brains of freedom lovers and their knowledge.Y

„he material assets owned and/or controlled by freedom lovers.Y
„he time and energy freedom lovers have available to apply their resources to expand freedom. Y

Suppose a hypothetical freedom lover works in a private-sector company, and the result is that 40% of
his/her resources are effectively being employed to support a tyrant-system through paying taxes,
providing information, etc. Suppose further that this freedom lover applies 50% of his/her resources
toward personal survival and well-being, and that he/she applies the remaining 10% to the promotion
and expansion of freedom. Y

„he net effect of the above is that our hypothetical freedom lover effectively spends four times the
resources on tyrant support than he/she spends on freedom expansion. So who wins? Y

Another way of looking at it is that the tyrant-system effectively owns 40% of our hypothetical freedom
lover's mind, body, and other resources. Y

Our hypothetical freedom lover might reason as follows:Y

„he only way I can pursue my career and earn a decent living, is to work for a private-sector
company.Y
If I try to beat the tax man, chances are I'll go to jail. Y

"It is hard to fight an enemy who has outposts in your head."

-- Sally Kempton Y

"„he most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed."
-- Steve Biko Y

Now suppose our hypothetical freedom lover were to set up a sex site on the Internet in his/her spare
time, possibly utilizing an offshore company in a tax haven. Suppose that after a year or so, the sex site
pays as much as the private-sector salary, and the freedom lover exits his/her private-sector job and the
tax system (as far as possible). Because some taxes are still being paid when buying gas, clothes, etc.,
the ratios now become: 5% tyrant support, 0% personal survival and well-being, and 15% freedom
promotion and expansion. Now who wins?Y

I've heard that the two most popular topics on the Internet are sex and UFOs. It may be a good idea for
some freedom lovers to get into the sex and UFO business. Maybe FFGs (Freedom Focus Groups) can
be set up to focus on these areas. Such websites could explain why freedom is important and provide
links to freedom sites, including BuildFreedom.com.Y

Such sites could be made profitable -- or more profitable -- by also encouraging visitors to participate in
Freedom Business Opportunities.Y
A website that provides information on gambling, particularly how the gambler can get the "best bang for
his buck," could be a great success. It could also encourage participation in Freedom Business
Opportunities.Y

„here are many ways to make money on the Internet. If you can generate traffic, you can turn that traffic
into money -- as we do with BuildFreedom.com and the links to Freedom Business Opportunities.Y

With the advent of the Internet, it's easier than ever to survive in the real free-enterprise sector (or
"underground economy"). I'm suggesting that freedom lovers shift more and more of their economic
resources and activities into the real free market and that FWO/BuildFreedom may be able to play a
significant role in this transition.Y

„he purpose of this article is to argue that from the perspective of the freedom activist there is no
significant difference between the private sector and the public sector. „he implication of this is that to
the extent that freedom activists work or do business in the private sector, they support "the enemy."Y

I demarcate a third sector I call the 7c5 free-enterprise sector -- also called the "underground
economy" or the "black economy." Free enterprise doesn't occur in the private sector; it occurs in the
real free-enterprise sector.Y

I advocate what I call the "Build Freedom Shift" -- the shift of economic assets and activities from the
public and private sectors into the real free-enterprise sector. (Build Freedom can be described as the
real free-enterprise sector.)Y

„he article also gives an indication of the size of the real free-enterprise sector and its growth, some of
the opportunities available in it, and some indication of how to shift into it.Y

People in the private sector typically support government by:
(1) „hey use corporations which are "instruments of the state." By doing so they subject themselves to
government rule. („here are of course offshore corporations that are much closer to real free-enterprise.)
(u) Corporations typically include personnel who act as government tax collectors. „hey collect taxes on
behalf of government and pass them on to government.
(3) Corporations typically include personnel who act as government snitches. „hey collect information
about employees and payments to contractors and send the information to government. „hey also send
all kinds of other information to government. Sometimes they garnish personnel wages/salaries on
behalf of government.
(4) „ypical corporations include personnel who pay corporate taxes to government. Practically all
government funding comes from the so-called "private sector."
(5) Large corporations typically include personnel who bribe politicians and government bureaucrats with
"gifts," campaign contributions, and lobbyist payments in return for legislation that will benefit the
corporations and harm their competition.
() Professionals such as lawyers, doctors, dentists, etc. participate in government licensing schemes for
monopoly-like privileges. Licensed lawyers (in the "private sector?") are "officers of the court," i.e.,
government agents.
(7) All kinds of "private-sector" contractors provide government with buildings, equipment, supplies,
computers, weapons, technology, and a wide range of services. „his includes weapons and technology
to control and kill people.
( ) People in the "private sector" typically send their children to government schools for government
brainwashing.
(9) People in the "private sector" typically use government fiat monopoly currency such as the $US.
(Personnel in "private-sector" banks play a major role as government snitches and sometimes in freezing
and/or seizing money on behalf of government.)
(10) People in the "private sector" typically vote politicians into power. See Don't Vote!, Don't vote! - it
only encourages them, „he Great Voting Hoax!, Fuck the Vote, Votescam, and Vote Fraud.Y

Many libertarians and other freedom lovers mistakenly regard the so-called "private sector" as being on
the side of freedom, rather than realizing the extreme extent to which they're really on the side of
government. If you carefully consider the above 10 points, how can you come to any conclusion other
than that the "private sector" is largely an arm or branch of the public sector?Y

I was horrified when about 1,000 people were killed during the Bhopal disaster in 19 4 in India. I was
very disappointed when Libertarian International (now ISIL) principals published a statement supporting
Union Carbide, whose toxic spill caused the disaster. Libertarian International principals supported Union
Carbide because they're a "private-sector" corporation -- apparently oblivious to the reality that such
corporations are major enemies of freedom.Y

5 95 : c & 9c :

Suppose that I call the degree to which I promote freedom in my daily activities my "Liberation Factor"
(LF) and the degree to which I support government my "Enslavement Factor" (EF).Y

In my personal case, because of the work I do (e.g., writing articles like this, providing freedom news ,
etc.), and the ways I organize and conduct my business affairs, my LF (Liberation Factor) is quite high.Y

My EF (Enslavement Factor) is reasonably low. It's still well above zero because:
(1) I pay rent to a "private-sector" corporation.
(u) I use government monopoly fiat currencies for about 10% of my transactions.
(3) I use "private-sector" utilities and banks.
(4) I buy, groceries, gas, etc. from "private-sector" corporations.
(5) Most of the above transactions include added-on taxes.
() I pay for car registration and a driver's license.Y

I guesstimate that on a scale of 100, my LF = 90 and my EF = 10.Y

If we calculate "Freedom Quotient" (FQ) as LF - EF, then my FQ = + 0.Y

We live in a world where terrocrats (coercive political agents or terrorist bureaucrats) have rigged the
game so they get the active support of the vast majority of the population. Most freedom lovers who are
"in the system" provide a great deal of support to the terrocrats just by performing their daily activities:
working in the "private sector," using terrocrat money for their transactions, etc.Y

Consider a freedom lover who works in some corporation. A portion of his pay is withheld and handed
over to the terrocrats every week or month. Just by working in such a corporation, the freedom lover
provides a great deal of support to the terrocrats. In general, personnel in this corporation obey the
terrocrats, provide them with all kinds of information about their business and workers, collect sales
taxes on behalf of the terrocrats and hand it over to them, pay corporate tax to the terrocrats, etc.
Because of all the ways people in such a corporation support the terrocrats, it seems realistic to regard
the corporation as being at least partially a terrocrat agency. Y

"„he ideal tyranny is that which is ignorantly self-administered by its victims. „he most perfect slaves
are, therefore, those which blissfully and unawaredly enslave themselves." -- Dresden James Y
„he power of terrocrats depends largely on the support they receive from their victims. Much of that
support comes in the form of obedience, providing information, and collecting taxes on behalf of the
terrocrats. „o the extent that freedom lovers work in "government-agency-corporations" they act as
terrocrat supporters. (Offshore corporations scan be used to greatly reduce terrocrat support.)Y

What if the typical freedom lover who works in a corporation has an LF of u0 and an EF of 0? If so, it
would mean that such a freedom lover provides four times as much support to the terrocrat enemies,
compared to his freedom-promoting activities. I suspect that the vast majority of freedom lovers live their
working lives in such a situation. „heir FQ = -0 or worse. How can freedom win if a large majority of
freedom lovers have negative FQs?Y

47 c c

Once you as a freedom lover have become fully aware that the so-called "private sector" is for many
intents and purposes part of the public government sector, and you become aware of the extent to which
you have been actively supporting the terrocrats, you may want to start considering alternatives.Y

During the past few years, a real free-enterprise economy has been growing "around" the digital and
other alternative currencies such as e-gold. „o get an idea of the size of this economy, check out the e-
gold statistics. Usually the transaction volume in any u4-hour period is about $u million equivalent. I've
seen it as high as $3 million.Y

In addition to e-gold, there are: Y

× 1mdc
× 3PGold
× DigiGold
× DM„ - AL„A - LESE
× eb-gold (e-Bullion)
× E-Dinar
× Evocash
× EZCMoney
× FreeCash
× GoldGrams (GoldMoney)
× Hargis Gold
× Internet Dollar
× Ithaca HOURs
× LE„Systems
× Liberty Dollar (Norfed)
× OSGold
× Standard Reserve Gold
× Standard Reserve Dollars
× „echnoCash
× WebMoney
× ZetX

See also E-Gold and Alternative Currency FAQ.Y

(A great deal of information on alternative/complementary currencies can be found at „ransaction Net.

See also Economic Means to Freedom - Part V.)Y

Another indication of the size of the alternative-currency economy can be gleaned from the e-gold
Directory. „here are several dozen companies that provide exchange services between the digital
currencies and with the "outside world" of government monopoly fiat currencies. See also E-Gold
Account Funding and the Gold Directory.Y

It's quite conceivable that the combined daily transaction volume in all these currencies exceeds $10
million equivalent a day (in January, u00u). Much of this occurs in the real free-enterprise sector. Many
of the assets involved are in the real free-enterprise sector. „he Build Freedom Shift is happening!
Growing numbers of people are shifting assets and economic activities into the alternative-currency
economy -- much of which is in the real free-enterprise sector. More and more businesses are
conducting transactions in alternative currencies.Y

Of course, a great deal of real free-enterprise economic activity takes place between people using
terrocrat fiat currency systems. See „HE UNDERGROUND ECONOMY: GLOBAL EVIDENCE OF I„S
SIZE AND IMPAC„. According to a Los Angeles Daily News report ("Cash economy threatens wages,
tax base" by Beth Barrett), "Los Angeles County's underground cash economy has exploded... Up to u
percent of the work force in the county is paid in cash, meaning as many as one in four don't have
federal and state payroll taxes withheld..."Y

 & &!

(1) Most transactions are private and confidential.
(u) „ransactions tend to be convenient and instantaneous.
(3) Generally, transaction costs are very low.
(4) Generally, transactions are final and can't be repudiated.
(5) In some cases such as e-gold, high degrees of automation are possible.
() Because of the economic advantages, individuals and businesses (whether they're pro-freedom or
not) are shifting some of their economic activities and assets into the alternative-currency economy.Y

7 c

Probably, many freedom lovers live reasonably "comfortable" lives "in the system," working in
corporations, financing the terrocrats, and so forth. If it applies to you, please consider the possibility that
you live your life in such a way that your EF = 0 or 90, and your LF = u0 or 10; i.e., your Freedom
Quotient (FQ) is -0 to - 0. If so, you do four to nine times as much to support the "government enemy,"
compared to what you do to promote freedom.Y

Have you ever experienced a desire to "beat the system?" For example, count cards to win at blackjack?
Or learn to exert a degree of control over the dice to give you a winning advantage in craps? -- see
WBM#7 - „he Winning Edge. Might you become interested in "beating the terrocrat system?"Y

You might think that what you as an individual does won't make much difference. „hat may or may not
be true. What if you have a better chance of becoming wealthy and financially independent in the real
free-enterprise sector than "in the system?" What if you can become successful in the real free-
enterprise sector and persuade others to do the same? What if you could create a snowball effect?Y

„he next thing to realize is that shifting into the real free-enterprise sector isn't an all-or-nothing issue.
You can take the first step by opening an e-gold account. You can learn to use your e-gold account. You
can shift into the real free-enterprise sector in small steps over an extended period. If you're good at
making your money grow -- or interested in improving your skills -- check out our Private Programs.

"Although I have never met you personally, I consider you my friend because you have opened my eyes
to new possibilities. You have embarked me on a path to freedom that I never new existed. And you
have done so in a way that allows me to determine my comfort zone on achieving new levels of freedom.
Although I have only contacted you a few times, I visit your website often to gain more knowledge and
insight. I have been visiting your web site for about u years now, but I couldn't contact you because I did
not have a computer of my own. You motivated me to purchase one so that I could visit your site more
often (not just when I was on lunch at work). I have had the computer since last August now, and
because of you I'm in the process of building my own website, and hopefully freeing myself from the
doldrums of a JOB. When I say because of you, you gave me the ideas to pursue something other than
the norm. „hank you for sharing your knowledge and insight." -- DSY

"I have been a member of your organization for about 4 months now. During that time I have made
several investments in the programs you recommend. I am ashamed to say that I had some
unnecessary losses. Oh how I wish that I had followed all your recommendations. I have never
complained about the losses because the other programs have allowed me to grow to a nice portfolio of
about $10,000 in a mere 3ų months. I definitely owe much of that to you. I have achieved this without
ever sponsoring a single individual. My goals are quite lofty as I have yet to put any profit into my pocket.
I reinvest profits in additional programs to lower my risk, i.e., diversify. It would appear that I will be
earning about $5,000 per month if all continues to go well by the first part of March, u00u. My plans are
to take profit of $1,500 to $u,000 per month starting in March and to reinvest (about $3000 per month
which increases exponentially each month) in other opportunities to continue to lower my risk. My goal is
$50,000 to $100,000 per month by next year at this time." -- BFY

If you're a business-person, consider adding e-gold as one of your payment systems. Many people are
interested in starting their own businesses. If you're starting a business, consider using e-gold and some
of the other digital currencies as payment systems. You could start a business that provides people with
information on how to "beat the system." As an example, see Offshore Products and Services.Y

ëc
„he "winning edge" concept is extremely important. For almost everything you do, it may be worth
asking, "What gives me a winning edge, here?"; "What do I have to do to get a winning edge, here?"; "Is
it possible to get a winning edge here, or am I wasting my time and money?"Y

As I indicated above, the terrocrats have rigged their game so the vast majority of freedom lovers
support the terrocrats more than they promote freedom. „he terrocrats have a huge winning edge. If we
freedom lovers want the beat the terrocrats -- and that's what needs to happen -- what can we do to
reduce their winning edge and increase our own?Y

One of their huge winning edges is that they tax people. Some freedom lovers clamor for tax abolition.
How does their strategy give them a winning edge? Why don't they as individuals learn to "beat the
taxtortionists?" Which is more pragmatic? See Fiscal Freedom.Y

Freedom „echnology includes the practical knowledge, skills and methods to legally, elegantly and
safely "unsubscribe" from terrocrat (terrorist-bureaucrats or coercive government agents) systems; the
street-smart know-how to run rings around terrocrats; the ability to find freedom in an unfree world.
Freedom „echnology gives you a winning edge.Y

A number of US companies have stopped withholding, most noticeably Arrow Custom Plastics. „heir
website includes a growing list of other "Non W-4 Companies." However, this is a risky strategy that may
not be appropriate for some.Y

Another approach for both businesses and individuals is proposed in Liberty Leasing: A Modest
Proposal for Freedom in Our „ime by L. Reichard White. At least two such companies are in existence:
American Contracting Services and Contract America, Ltd. As a freedom-loving business owner, you
may be able to provide your personnel the opportunity to utilize the services of one of these companies.
As a freedom-loving individual working in a corporation, you may be able to persuade the bosses to let
you contract through one of these companies.Y

Laissez Faire City could become a major real free-enterprise institution. As I understand, it's in the
process of creating what might be called a "sovereign infrastructure" that enables participants to interact,
transact, and do business as sovereigns -- beyond the knowledge and control of terrocrats, and without
supporting terrocrats. See also Laissez Faire City „imes, OrlinGrabbe.com, and Home Page of J. Orlin
Grabbe.Y

„he concept of "sovereign infrastructure" is very important. Its importance can be appreciated by
examining the elements of the "terrocrat infrastructure" (see also #„L07B: „he Nature of Government): Y

× So-called "Constitution"
× So-called "law-making" and "law-enforcement" systems
× Hierarchical coercive power systems
× Government bureaucracies
× Political parties
× Compulsory state "education"
× Politically controlled universities
× Corporations in the falsely-called "private sector"
× Politically controlled money and banking systems
× „axation systems
× Military war systems
× Politically controlled communication systems
× Politically controlled media
× Politically controlled transport systems
× Politically controlled energy supply systems
× Politically controlled health systems
× Etc.

„he alternative currencies form the beginnings of the sovereign infrastructure. „hey make some
sovereign transactions practical for many -- and sovereign businesses for some. „o the extent that the
Internet can be used in a sovereign manner it's part of the sovereign infrastructure. Of course, to the
extent it is used by terrocrats and in ways that support terrocrats, it's part of the terrocrat infrastructure.Y

„he basic sovereign infrastructure idea is to create voluntary alternatives (in the sovereign sector) to the
elements of the terrocrat sector wherever practical. If these alternatives provide better services at lower
costs, then even people who know nothing or little about freedom (and couldn't care less) will start using
them. So, even people who are not freedom-oriented can be persuaded to shift some of their assets and
economic activities into the real free-enterprise sector or Build Freedom. („his is the opposite of freedom
lovers having their assets and conducting their economic activities in the terrocrat sector.)Y

In recent months, with the advent of all the other alternative currencies, e-gold's growth has probably
slowed down somewhat. But the overall growth of the "alternative-currency economy" may be continuing
at around u0% per month.Y

Such a growth means that significant numbers of people and businesses are entering into the
alternative-currency economy every month. It also means that each month the number of new entrants
grows. By investigating what kinds of products and services these people might need, you can an idea of
the opportunities available to entrepreneurs.Y

As indicated in "Upgrading the Utilization of Freedom Resources," there are enormous potential freedom
resources in the world:Y

1. „he brains of freedom lovers and their knowledge.

u. „he material assets owned and/or controlled by freedom lovers.
3. „he time and energy freedom lovers have available to apply their resources to expand freedom.

Currently, a large portion of these resources and assets are being applied in the so-called "private"
sector to actively support the enemy public sector. If you love freedom and you're not already operating
largely in the real free-enterprise sector, then I urge you to explore how you can shift more of your
economic activities, resources, and assets into the real free-enterprise sector. You may discover more
profitable ways of using what you control to expand freedom, rather than supporting the enemy public
sector.Y

!
Right now it is appropriate for many freedom activists to reduce the degree to which they support the
terrocrat enemies, by beginning to shift into the real free-enterprise sector. You can start with small
steps. You can make it profitable for you to do so. If you've been spending money to promote freedom,
you can turn that around -- you can start earning more money and supporting freedom at the same time.Y

H6 Aren't all these and similar programs scams; I've heard that many scammers use e-gold?Y

6 First, it's necessary to make a distinction between "gold games" and "HYIPs" (High-Yield Income
Programs). "Gold games" are Internet programs that promise outrageous returns such as "double your
money in 7days!" Practically all (if not all without exception) of these "gold games" are scams. Second,
HYIPs typically promise returns ranging from around 1-5% per month to 100% per month. „he vast
majority of such programs promoted on the Internet are scams, become scams, or fail for other reasons.
But a few are legitimate. Some consistently pay 1-10% per month, year after year. A great deal of know-
how has been developed on how to utilize them to make your alternative currencies grow. Even with
programs that eventually fail, you may be able to earn a great deal. „his is explained in detail on our
Private Programs page and its links.Y

H6 Surely, any so-called "HYIP" (or whatever) that promises outrageous returns like 10% per month or
more can only be a scam?Y

6 „here are certain people who apply what I call "superior money formulas" in their areas of specialty.
„hree examples are Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and George Soros. Over the years, these individuals
have provided substantial to huge returns for their investors. Warren Buffet could be described as a
"High-Yield Capital Gain Program" operator and George Soros as an HYIP operator. Fortunately, there
are also other people who can and have provided substantial to huge returns for their investors. It
certainly is true that the vast majority of "HYIPs" offered on the Internet are scams, become scams, or
fail for other reasons. „hat does not make of them scams. Similarly, the fact that 90% of new
businesses fail in their first years or so, doesn't make all new businesses scams. Nevertheless, the
scam/failure rate among "HYIPs" is considerably higher than for new businesses. Fortunately, there are
a few honest, reliable, and trustworthy HYIP operators. For more on this, see Advanced Money Skills.Y

H6 Is it possible to earn your living speculating with the kinds of programs you feature?Y

6 Most definitely. „here are probably several thousand people who do this successfully. However, you
may have to learn the "tricks of the trade," which you can do from our Private Programs page and its
links.Y

H6 I'm not interested in risking my hard-earned capital on questionable HYIPs. Are their ways to make
my e-gold grow without taking big risks?Y

6 Yes. „here is a way to spend $10 or $50 worth of e-gold, do some marketing, and develop a
substantial weekly income. It's not MLM. In fact, it's vastly superior to MLM. See Assessment of MLM
Madness! Your earnings will be in the form of US$ payments, which you can convert into e-gold using a
market maker.Y

H6 Can you provide an inclusive list of all the different alternative currencies?Y

6 All the ones I know of are listed in Is the Private Sector Really Part of the Public Sector?.Y

H6 Please tell me more about why should I use alternative currencies; what are their advantages?Y

6 „he biggest advantage is probably that they are privately issued and less subject to "legal plunder" by
government -- see #„L07B: „he Nature of Government -- than government fiat currencies. Y

1. Most transactions are private and confidential.

u. „ransactions tend to be convenient and instantaneous.
3. Generally, transaction costs are very low.
4. Generally, transactions are final and can't be repudiated.
5. In some cases such as e-gold, high degrees of automation are possible.
. Because of the economic advantages, individuals and businesses (whether they're pro-freedom
or not) are shifting some of their economic activities and assets into the alternative-currency
economy.
7. Some of the alternative currencies are less likely to lose their value through inflation, compared
to government fiat currencies.
. With some of the currencies, micropayments (e.g., small fractions of a dollar or gram of gold)
become possible.

H6 What disadvantages and risks are involved with using alternative currencies?Y

6 „he biggest risk is probably that a cracker-thief will hack into your account and steal whatever money
is in your account. („he issue of security is covered below in more detail.) Here are some other risks and
disadvantages: Y

1. You could accidentally pay to the wrong account (or pay too much), and the recipient refuses to
return your money. Generally, transactions can't be repudiated.
u. „he operators of a currency may fail with their business or may "run with the money," leaving
currency holders with small or large losses.
3. If you're a business, using a particular currency, the currency owner may decide that he doesn't
like your business and "cap your account" so your customers can't spend to it. „his can be
embarrassing, disruptive, and expensive in terms of lost business. („he e-gold management has
been "trigger-happy" in this respect. As a result, some businesses have shifted to OSGold and
Evocash.) If your business is receiving payments in these currencies, it may be prudent to use
multiple currencies with multiple accounts for each, so your ability to receive payments is
flexible.
4. Some of the alternative currency operators sometimes don't provide good customer support
services. Nevertheless, in my experience, most of the alternative currency operators provide
adequate service.

H6 Can you provide an example of a merchant who is satisfied with e-gold as a payment system?Y

6 See: Y

× K.I.6C. Global
× Dark Castle
× Near the beginning of this FAQ, in answer to the question, "Can I use currencies such as e-gold
to do my shopping?", a number of directories are listed. In the directories you can find
merchants who use e-gold and other alternative currencies. You could contact them to find out
how satisfied they are.

H6 How easy or difficult is it to convert from one alternative currency to another?Y

6 Numerous market makers provide this service. In particular, see: Y

× Euro Gold Line

× GoldEx
× London Gold Exchange.

H6 What about security?Y

6 „here are several "professional thieves" in the business of raiding e-gold and other alternative
currency accounts. „ypically, they use the following methods: Y

1. Confidence trick: You receive an email that you've won $10,000 in e-gold, or that your e-gold
account will be closed if you don't act, or some such. When you go to the URL (which could be
something like WWW.E-QOLD.COM, looking just like www.e-gold.com), you are persuaded to
enter your e-gold account number and password, which are captured and used to empty your
account. Beware of fake emails that look like they were sent by the currency owner or operator.
u. If you use a simple password, thieves may be able to "guess" it. Or they may use programs to
systematically attempt to access all the accounts of a particular currency, using a range of
simple passwords such as "CHRIS„MAS," "ILOVEYOU," "MYMONEY," etc. (E-gold introduced
their "„uring number" to guard against this kind of attack.)
3. If you also use your e-gold password for other programs, crackers may be able to hack into
those programs, get your password and use it to raid your e-gold account.
4. You may provide your password to someone you trust -- or inadvertently to someone you don't
think will be able to use it. Suppose you use someone else's computer to access your e-gold
account. „hat computer is configured to "remember" account numbers and passwords. Later,
the computer owner can access your e-gold account with the "remembered" account number
and password. „he same could happen if you use a "public" computer, e.g., in a library, Internet
Café, or place of business. Another possibility is that you access your account and leave your
computer for a few minutes. A sophisticated watcher transfers your balance to his account in a
few seconds.
5. You access a website where you do a purchase (spend or transfer) that ostensibly uses the e-
gold, GoldMoney, or 1mdc automatic shopping cart interface
(SCI). However, the website is programmed to capture your account number and password,
which can then be used to raid your account.
. A cracker can plant a "„rojan Horse" in your system that sends information back to the cracker,
such as your Internet connection "IP numbers," your keyboard strokes, your "password cache"
information, etc. „he cracker can then use this information to raid your accounts. „here are
basically three ways a trojan can be planted in your system:
a. You receive an email with an attachment. When you click on the attachment, the trojan
is installed.
b. You access a website which has code to plant a trojan on every computer that accesses
the site.
c. A cracker logs into your system remotely, while you're logged onto the Internet, and
installs a trojan.

H6 How can I protect my accounts?Y

6 „he security of alternative currency accounts can be discussed on the Gold Account Security
discussion list. You can also subscribe by sending a blank email to gold_security-
subscribe@topica.com. See also Keeping GoldGrams Safe. Y

1. Use long, complex, and unique passwords (or passphrases). Change them periodically. Never
reveal your passwords to anyone else. Never use the same password for any other accounts.
u. Be very suspicious when you receive an email that you've won money and need to do
something to claim it, or an email purporting to be from the currency owner that you need to do
something about your account.
3. If you have significant balances, open multiple accounts and spread your money. Have one
"public" account for "spends" and other private accounts for "storage." Never reveal the account
numbers of your private accounts to anyone. Keep the balance of your "public" account low.
4. When you make purchases, transfers, or "spends, using a currency SCI (shopping cart
interface), check carefully that you're actually accessing the currency SCI. A website you access
can be programmed so it looks like you're in the currency SCI, but you're really not. (A cracker
could use "E-QOLD" instead of "E-GOLD" to deceive you. In lower case it's not easy to tell the
difference.) As a further precaution, you could change your password every time after doing a
"spend" on a website you're not sure is safe. As a further precaution, you may want to use only
certain specific accounts for SCI spends. Before the spend, you transfer the amount you want to
spend (plus transaction fee, if necessary) to the "SCI-spend" account. „hen you do the spend,
leaving only a small balance in the account. Never have any significant balances in these "SCI-
spend" accounts.
5. Never leave an e-gold session (or any other) unattended. If you use a computer other than your
own to access your account, change the password immediately afterward.
. Never download files to your computer unless you are reasonably sure they don't contain
viruses, worm, or trojans.
7. Install anti-virus software on your computer, such as from McAfee. Update your "DA„" files
regularly.
. Install anti-trojan software on your computer, such as from „DS.
9. Install a firewall on your computer. „his is software that can be set up to stop unauthorized
access to and transmissions from your computer. A firewall can be used to stop a "keyboard
sniffer" from sending out your password. See McAfee and ZoneAlarm.
10. Copying & pasting your account number & password when accessing accounts also provides a
degree of security.
11. On the e-gold site, use your mouse instead of the keyboard to enter your passphrase. „his can
be done thanks to the SRK (blue circle) button on the right side of the passphrase field from the
access account form. Click on it to see the virtual keyboard.
1u. Realize that Microsoft Windows is inherently insecure. It's important to realize that crackers can
identify specific targets and attempt to get into their systems. If they expect that you have
substantial account balances, they may regard you as a worthwhile target. Depending on the
size of your accounts, it may be worth going to the extremes I have to protect your assets.
Personally, I use a "supersafe three-computer" approach:
a. I use a "gateway" or "bastion" computer (not Windows) with a firewall just to access the
Internet. „wo other computers are networked to the gateway computer.
b. I use a second computer (Windows) to do most of my work -- e-mail, writing, accessing
websites for research, etc. I don't use this computer to access any critical accounts.
c. I use a third computer (not Windows) with a firewall just to access my critical accounts.
„his computer never receives nor sends email. [If you're interested in setting up such a
"supersafe three-computer" system for yourself, I recommend the following

d. Operating systems like Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD are great to use for
firewall computers. If you choose to use one of these, be sure to search for information
on how to "harden" the system so as to make it less vulnerable to attacks.

H6 I just logged into my e-gold account and found it had been emptied. I mentioned this to a friend of
mine on icq and this has happened to someone else he knows. He lost a whole lot more than me. It
seems that e-gold is far from secure. It was e-gold that was hacked, not my PC, as I have a firewall that
won't even let me do my own telebanking while it's on. How can my PC be more secure than that?Y

6 Depending on the quality of your firewall and how well it's configured, it may have holes crackers can
drive big trucks through. I've seen several reports of PCs with firewalls that were hacked into -- resulting
in emptied e-gold accounts. It's extremely unlikely that e-gold was hacked. How secure was your PC
when you turned the firewall off to do telebanking? As for making your PC more secure, see previous
answer. Y

H6 Are there any other kinds of scams I need to watch out for?Y

6 Yes. You need to know that it's relatively easy to send an email, making it look like it came from any
specific email address. Some time ago, I received the email below, which has nothing to do with me. It
was sent out by an impersonator. I most definitely have no involvement in this "Private „rade." One

If you've ever seen the aftermath of a tidal wave, you can't help but be moved by its devastating power.
Boats smashed to pieces and scattered on the shore, buildings collapsed -- a vast scene of destruction
and disarray. And yet, if you have boating experience and are out to sea, you know that a tidal wave
can move right beneath your hull and you might never know the difference. „hat's the way it is with the
truly massive changes in the world. „hey seem to happen with sudden fury, but in reality the big
transformations move beneath us so silently we rarely know what is happening. Y

ñ
„he really big change that is quietly moving beneath us is the shift that is bound to take place with
governmental money. Fiat currencies (governmental paper money without backing) have been the
norm since 1973 when virtually all the major countries in the world followed the example of the U.S.
Federal Reserve and abolished gold as the underlying support for their printed money. Y

Gold is the historical currency of last resort. Whenever there are fears associated with any form of
money, prudent investors move quickly back to gold in order to hedge their positions. „hroughout 5,000
years of recorded history, gold has reigned supreme as the fundamental money for commerce. At this
moment in time virtually all the world's central banks view themselves in competition with gold and will
do (and have done) just about everything they can to convince the populace that gold is simply a
commodity like bricks or lead, and that it's now nothing more than a relic of history. Notwithstanding
huge governmental down pressure on the gold spot price, the pieces are in place such that gold is
about to regain its preeminence. Y
In my 199 book entitled "Barter & „he Future of Money," I argued that in the first quarter of the new
millennium, as the Internet expanded and allowed for increased international commerce by the average
person, no governmental currency would be adequate to service the needs of commerce. Further,
because governmental currencies represent political statements, any given country's money will
ultimately be deemed (and correctly so) as the extension of their particular political persuasion. (More
on this in the next newsletter.)Y

„he following quotation by Lord Reese-Mogg and James Davidson in their 1997 book entitled the
"Sovereign Individual" sums it up: "While paper money will no doubt remain in circulation as a residual
medium of exchange for the poor and computer-illiterate, money for high-value transactions will be
privatized. Cybermoney will no longer be denominated only in national units like the paper money of the
industrial period. It probably will be defined in terms of grams or ounces of gold, as finely divisible as
gold itself..." Y

Private money, backed 100% by gold held in secure commercial vaults with third-party physical
validation will engender consumer confidence and allow for the expansion of what the trade calls,
"digital gold." Digital gold now exists and already allows people to use gold as money over the Internet,
via personal data assistants, like the ubiquitous Palm Pilot, and even through cellular phones. It is much
easier to use, faster and less expensive than wire transfers, and of course it is gold, not unfunded
paper. So... given a monetary crisis one is way better off holding gold on deposit than paper currency.
But, perhaps most importantly, it provides for a level of security and confidentiality no longer available
through the US-dollar driven banking system. Y

As of March u00u, there are already seven private digital gold currencies in the world that allow people
to use gold to buy, sell, and trade goods and services on an international scale in a matter of seconds.
„his fledging $u billion a year industry has been growing at a tremendous rate over the past 1 months
and shows no sign of slowing in the near future. [For a list of alternative currencies, see Is the Private
Sector Really Part of the Public Sector?Y

According to the Matthew Chancey of the Gold Economy, "Investment gurus such as James Davidson,
Doug Casey, and Lord Reese-Mogg predict that by the year u050 digital gold will replace the US Dollar
and the Euro as the currency of choice around the world for commerce and savings. As the world
seems to have entered a global recession, Digital Gold Currencies are growing faster than ever before.
Both E-Gold.com and E-Bullion.com are operating in the black and making significant profits." And,
Crowne Gold has just purchased 3Pgold.com with principals who know a great deal about launching
and operating an alternative currency and with the resources to ensure success. Y

Digital gold has the potential to revolutionize the way the world does business. Already bullion traders
use digital gold to move large quantities of gold instantaneously with superior cost efficiency. „wo gold-
mining companies have already started paying their shareholder dividends using digital gold. It is just a
matter of time until digital gold catches up to the larger economy. „he Luxor Casino in Las Vegas will
soon be paying out winnings in digital gold, and Carnival Cruise Lines is running a pilot program to pay
its employees via direct deposit using a digital gold currency coupled with an international debit card!
Gold can now be held on both debit cards and smart cards. „he financial world is changing. Y

!
„his sea change is part of the process that may end up causing the death of some national
governments or at least force upon them dramatic transformation. „his is inevitable if governments can't
control the exodus of money and assets. Feeling this threat, nation states have reacted with ever-
harsher means of exacting wealth from the people whom they are pledged to protect. Under cover of
anti-money laundering legislation, the threat of terrorism, and the war on drugs, the US has launched a
whole new level of citizen control laws. Most of this legislation has to do with the tracking of every dollar
deposited, spent, or transferred, thereby stripping citizens of their rights to privacy and exposing anyone
transacting business in US dollars to predatory seizure laws. With central planners attempting to
manage the US economy, (much like the former Soviet Union), things do not bode well for a long-term
recovery.Y

Curiously, gold remains unregulated regardless of its digital use in place of money. For government to
do otherwise supports the obvious position that all money ultimately falls back on gold and this could
put US dollars under huge down pressure by currency speculators. Y

„he alert individual is claiming personal sovereignty as nations lose their authority over knowledge,
money, communication, and thinking. Slowly, quietly, as if waking from a dream, we take control of our
lives and make the decisions that are best for us. Government is not capable of delivering what they
promise -- protection, security and value-underwritten currency. It is the task of the autonomous
individual to assume more of these responsibilities. Y

It's been said that there are three kinds of people in the world: those who make things happen, those
who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. Continuing with the nautical theme
we might suppose that those who steer their ships safely to harbor are the ones who "make things
happen;" those who never get off the dock are the ones who "watch things happen," and those whose
ships get dashed on the rocks for lack of understanding and direction are the ones who simply "wonder
what happened."Y

By understanding the processes that are in play, the self-directed individual who makes things happen
has the opportunity to conduct business from more secure locations, in more secure ways, and hedge
assets where they may grow more rapidly beyond the grasping hands of predatorsY
