1. Introduction

i) This guideline is applied to St. John junior members of 7 primary schools under
Ayer Keroh Combined Division and Bandar Hilir Combined Division:
- SJK (C) Ayer Keroh
- SJK (C) Keh Seng
- SJK (C) Wen Hua
- SJK (C) Pay Fong 2
- SJK (C) Pay Fong 3
- SJK (C) Siang Ling
- SJK (C) Yu Ying

ii) This guideline contains the standard training syllabus with 4 main categories:
- St. John Ambulance
- Essentials of First Aid (EFA)
- Home Care & Safety
- Foot Drill

iii) All training shall be conducted in Chinese, with references to other languages, i.e.
Malay and English, if necessary.
2. Training Syllabus

2.1. St. John Ambulance


a) Anthem
- Skill - “Berkhidmat Bagi Manusia” singing practice.

b) Flag, Logo, Slogan


- Introduction and definition of St. John flag, logo/emblem and slogan.

c) Order of St. John


- Introduction of Order of St. John. History of St. John. History of St. John
Ambulance of Malaysia.

d) Uniform
- Introduction to full-uniforms of junior, cadet and adult member. Explanation of
junior member's full-uniform rules.

e) Organization Structure
- Introduciton to organization structure of each primary school - national, state,
area, division levels – Organization Chart.
2.2 Essentials of First Aid (EFA)

Description

This course provides basic introduction to First Aid, focusing on basic sustaining
procedures and management of injuries. It emphasizes on skills, and a skill-based
approach of teaching is adopted. It is appropriate only for young children.

Examination

i. Members aged 9 to 12 years are eligible to take this EFA examination.


ii. The examination consists of written test and practical tests.
iii. Sijil Pertolongan Cemas Asas (Essentials of First Aid certificate) will be
awarded to successful candidates.

a) Introduction to First Aid

Knowledge :
- The first aider's responsibilities
- Definition and purpose of first aid
- DRABC
- First aid’s equipments
- Principals of diagnosis – signs, symptoms, history

Skills :
- Assessing the situation
- Calling for help and telephoning for ambulance/hospital
- Diagnosis – determining consciousness of casualty, opening airway, checking
breathing and circulation

b) Human Anatomy

Knowledge :
- Visual introduction to human body systems
- Main systems – respiratory, digestive, endocrine, reproductory, circulatory,
immune, muscular, skeletal, nervous, integumentary.
- Introduction and explanation to circulatory, respiration, skeletal systems.

c) Circulatory System

Knowledge :
- Mechanism of the circulatory system
- Blood volume and components
- Sites where pulse is taken
Skill :
- Recording of pulse rate
d) Wounds and Bleeding

Knowledge :
- Types of wounds and bleeding
- Principles of controlling bleeding – direct pressure, elevation.
- Preventing cross infection
- Signs and symptoms of a tight bandage

Skills :
- Management of wound with minor bleeding – controlling bleeding (direct
pressure, elevation), applying adhesive dressing
- Management of wound with severe bleeding – controlling bleeding, applying
gauze dressing and securing with roller bandage
- Roller bandage – Simple spiral, and Figure of 8

e) Dressing and Bandages

Knowledge :
- Definition and functions of dressing and bandages
- Types of dressing
- Types of bandage

Skills :
- Folding a triangular bandage
- Reef knot
- Slings – Large arm sling, Elevation sling

f) Unconciousness and Shock

Knowledge :
- Definition and causes of unconciousness – fainting, heart attack, etc.
- Definition, causes, signs and symptoms of shock.

Skill :
- General management of fainting, heart attack, etc.
- Management of shock
g) Breathing Disorders

Knowledge :
- Asphyxia – definition, causes, signs and symptoms
- Causes, signs and symptoms of choking

Skill :
- Management of asthma patient
- Management of conscious choking casualties

h) Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

Knowledge :
- Importance of oxygen
- Signs of life
- CPR – purpose, when and how long to perform, explanation of steps

Skill :
- CPR for adult – Guidelines 2010

i) Burns and Scalds

Knowledge :
- Types and causes of burns
- Assessment of seriousness – site of burn, extent of burn (rule of 9), depth, source
of burn.
- Signs and Symptoms

Skills :
- Mangement of thermal burn injuries
- Management of chemical burn injuries
- Management of electrical burns
j) Injuries to Bones

Knowledge :
- The skeleton – functions, major bones
- Fracture – definition, causes, types of fracture (open,closedcomplicated), sites of
complicated fracture
- General signs and symptoms, rules for mangement

Skills :
- Management of fractured bones – head, collar, ribs, wrist and fingers, forearm,
upper arm, arm close to elbow, pelvis, femur, lower leg, patella
- Management of dislocation – shoulder

k) Injuries to Soft Tissues

Knowledge :
- Strain and sprain – definition, signs and symptoms
- Cramps – definition, causes

Skill :
- Management of soft tissue injuries – RICE procedure
- Management of cramps – toes, calf, thigh

l) Miscellaneous Conditions

Knowledge :
- Fainting – causes, signs, management. Skill – recovery position.
- Heart attack – causes, signs and symptoms, general management
- Poisoning – causes, signs and symptoms, general management
- Eye, ear and nose injuries – management of foreign bodies, management of nose
bleeding
- Fits (Epilepsy) – causes, signs and symptoms, general management

m) Lifting and Moving of Casualty

Knowledge :
- Principles of lifting
- Choice of method, types of stretchers

Skills :
- Single person lifting methods
- 2 person lifting methods
- Lifting – Monkey-log technique
- Stretcher
2.3 Home Care and Safety

a) Common illness
- Introduction to fever, vomiting, allergic, headache, etc.
- General signs and symptoms, general management.

b) Healthy Lifestyle
- Introduction to balanced diet – food pyramid.
- Ways of living healthily.
- Self-hygiene – skill – handwashing.

c) Emergency
- Introduction to emergency situation or disasters - electric shock, fire, flood &
tsunami, etc.
- Ways to discover the disasters, ways to safeguard own safety and prevent injury.

d) Caring of Patients/Others
- Introduction to basic nursing – temperature taking, medication.

e) Diseases
- Introduction to viral diseases - HIV/AIDS, Kawasaki, T-B, SARS, H1N1, etc.
- Signs and symptoms, negative effects of infection.
- Ways to prevent infection.

2.4 Foot Drill

a) Static
- Skill – practice of static marching movements and timing.

b) Marching
- Skill – practice of marching and timing.

c) Command
- Skill – basic practice of command.
