“The sensation of touch is the brain’s most

effective sensory mechanism --more effective than seeing, hearing or any other media.” Imagine
playing cricket on the field effortlessly while observing your interactions with images, and sipping a cup of
coffee at the same time!!! Ever thought of playing tennis on a computer with a friend in another horizon of
the world; both of you swinging your tennis racket and feeling the impact of the ball?? Think this is
obscure? Then it’s high time you start thinking, think again or as we suggest, “Think Beyond”!!
FOOTPRINTS XI introduces to you the Gen Y technology “HAPTICS”, a workshop giving you a chance to
redefine sense, touch and feel. HAPTICS is the science of applying touch, sensation and control for
interaction with virtual or physical applications. In a Haptic robotic arm, the movements can be controlled
by moving the controlling person’s arm as the Robotic Arm mimics the movements of the controller’s
arm. Basically, a Haptic robotic arm can be governed by you, giving it signals, neither in form of speech
nor light but a mere movement of your own hand. Haptics is being used by psychologists for studies on
the active touch of real objects, by surgeons for Robotic Tele Surgery, by scientist and astronauts for
space-ship maneuvering. The Dexterous Hand (from the NASA’s collection of Humanoids) has haptic
sensors embedded in every joint and in every finger pad which relay information to a central computer for
processing and analysis. So guys, here is a chance to witness this out of the world technology only at
FOOTPRINTS. You’ll come with two hands, and it’s our promise you’ll return with a multi-dexterous
personality. No need to ask for a helping hand when you can CREATE your own!
