1. In a tension test on a steel tube of outer diameter 18 mm and 12 mm bore, an axial


load of 1.7 kN produced an elongation of 0.0045 mm on a length of 75 mm, while
the outer diameter suffered a reduction of 0.00032 mm. Calculate the values of all
the four elastic constants. [16]

2. A bar of mild steel 20 mm diameter is subjected to an axial pull of 50 kN. The


increase in length over a gauge length of 200 mm is measured to be 0.16 mm. The
decrease in diameter was 0.0048 mm. From the above data determine the modulus
of Elasticity and Poisson’s ratio of mild steel. [16]

3. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam loaded as shown
in the Figure3. [16]

4. (a) State the assumptions involved in the theory of simple bending. [6]
(b) Derive the Bending equation from fist principle. [10]

5. An overhanging beam ABC 7 m long is supported at A and B such that AB = 4m.


It is loaded with point load of 10 KN at the end C. If E = 200 ×102 kN/m2 and I =
12 ×10−6 m4 determine deflection at the point C and maximum deflection between
A and B. [16]

6. (a) Derive the relation for the change of diameter and length of a thin cylindrical
shell subjected to an internal pressure. [10]
(b) A thin cylinder steel shell of diameter 200 mm and wall thickness 4 mm has
spherical ends. Determine the thickness of hemispherical ends if there is no
distortion of the junction under pressure. [6]

7. Direct stresses of 120 N/mm2 tension and 90 N/mm2 compression are applied to an
elastic material at a certain point, on planes at right angles. The greater principal
stress is limited to 150N/mm2 . What shearing stress may be applied to the given

planes and what will be the maximum shearing stress at the point ? Work from
the first principals. [16]

8. A propeller shaft, 160mm external diameter, 80mm internal diameter, transmits


450kW at 4/3 Hz. There is, at the same time, a bending moment of 30kN-m and
an end thrust of 250kN. Find

(a) the maximum principal stresses and their planes [6]


(b) the maximum shear stress and its plane [6]
(c) the stress, which acting alone, will produce the same maximum strain. Take
poisson’s ratio = 0.3 [4]

(b) If the Young’s Modulus of elasticity of a material is twice its modulus of
rigidity, then compute the Poisson’s ratio of material. [10]
2. A steel rod 28 mm diameter is fixed concentrically in a brass tube of 42 mm outer
diameter and 30 mm inner diameter. Both the rod and tube are 450 mm long. The
compound rod is held between two stops which are exactly 450 mm apart and the
temperature of the bar is raised by 700 C.
(a) Find the stresses in the rod and tube if the distance between the stops is
increased by 0.30 mm.
(b) Find the increase in the distance between the stops if the force exerted between
them is 90 kN

3. A beam of length 6m is simply supported at its ends. It is loaded with a gradually
varying load of 750 N/m from left end to 1500 N/m to the right end. Construct
the SF and BM diagrams and find the magnitude and position of the maximum
BM. [16]
4. (a) State the assumptions involved in the theory of simple bending. [6]
(b) Derive the Bending equation from fist principle. [10]
5. (a) What is moment area method? Explain the two Mohr’s theorems, as applica-
ble to the slope and deflection of a beam. [6]
(b) A cantilever of uniform cross-section of length l carries two point loads, W at
the free end and 2W at a distance a from the free end. Find the maximum
deflection due to this loading. [10]
6. Calculate the increase in volume enclosed by a boiler shell 2.4 m long and 1 m
in diameter, when it is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5 N/mm2 . The wall
thickness is such that the maximum tensile stress in the shell is 21.5 N/mm2 , under
this pressure. Given E = 210 kN/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio = 0.28. [16]

7. (a) A rectangular body is subjected to direct stresses in two mutually perpendic-
ular directions accompanied by a shear stress. Prove that the normal stress
and shear stress on an oblique plane inclined at an angle θ with the plane of
major direct stress, are given by [10]

τ s = 1/2 [σ x − σ y ] Sin2θ − τ xy cos2θ
(b) A rectangular bar is subjected to a direct stress (σ) in one plane only. Prove
that the normal and shear stresses on an oblique plane are given by
σ n = σcos2 θ and τ s = σ/2 sinθ
where θ = Angle made by oblique plane with the normal cross section of the
bar.

1. (a) Derive the relation between Bulk modulus and Modulus of rigidity. [6]
(b) A rigid bar AB 9 m long is suspended by two vertical rods at its ends A and
B and hangs in horizontal position by its own weight. The rod at A is brass,
3m long, 1000mm2 area and E is 105 N/mm2 . The rod at B is steel, 5m long,
450 mm2 area and E is 2×105 N/mm2 . At what distance ‘d’ from A may a
vertical load P = 5 kN be applied if the bar is to remain horizontal even after
the load is applied. [10]

2. (a) Draw stress-strain diagram for mild steel specimen tested under uni-axial ten-
sion till fracture and mark all the salient points. [8]
(b) A metallic rod of 1 cm diameter, when tested under an axial pull of 10 kN was
found to reduce its diameter by 0.0003 cm. The modulus of rigidity for the
rod is 51 kN/mm2 . Find the Poisson’s ratio, modulus of elasticity and Bulk
Modulus. [8]

3. Sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams showing the salient values
for the loaded beam shown in the figure3 below. [16]

4. (a) A rectangular beam 300mm wide and 460mm deep is simply supported over
a span of 8.5m. what u.d.l the beam may carry if the bending stress is not to
exceed 150MPa.
(b) A horizontal beam is of the section shown in Figure4b is 6.5m long and is
simply supported at its ends. Calculate the maximum u.d.l it can carry if
the tensile and compressive stresses are not to exceed 45 MPa and 68MPa,
respectively.

5. (a) A beam of length L is supported at each end with a couple applied at an in-
termediate point. Deduce an expression for the deflection and hence calculate
the deflection at the point of application of the moment. [8]
(b) A beam of length L carries a uniformly distributed load w/unit length and
rests on three supports, two at the ends and one in the middle. Find how much
the middle support be lower than the end ones in order that the pressures on
the three supports shall be equal. [8]

6. Derive the formula for the thickness of the thin cylindrical shell and solve the
following problem. A thin cylindrical shell of 1 m diameter is subjected to an
internal pressure of 1 N/mm2 . Calculate the suitable thickness of the shell, if the
tensile strength of the plate is 400 N/mm2 and factor of safety is 4. [16]

7. Derive an expression for the shear stress produced in a circular shaft which is
subjected to torsion. What are the assumptions made in the above derivation ?

1. (a) Define the terms:

2. (a) A 38 mm diameter and 450 mm long bar extends by 20 mm when subjected


to an axial tension of 100 kN. The same bar, independently, when subjected
to a twisting moment of 1.27 kN-m twist through 1.9220 . Calculate the values
of the four elastic constants. [10]
(b) Show that if E is assumed correct, an error of 1% in the determination of N,
involves an error of about 5% in calculating Poisson?s ratio when its correct
value is 0.25. [6]

3. A beam of span 12m is simply supported at two points 8m apart with equal over-
hang on either. The beam carries a uniformly distributed load of 2.5 kN/m run
over the entire span. Construct the SFD and BMD. Locate also the points of contra
flexure. [16]

5. (a) A beam of length L is supported at each end with a couple applied at an in-
termediate point. Deduce an expression for the deflection and hence calculate

rests on three supports, two at the ends and one in the middle. Find how much
the middle support be lower than the end ones in order that the pressures on
the three supports shall be equal. [8]

6. (a) Derive the formula for the hoop stress in a thin cylindrical shell subjected to
an internal pressure. [7]
(b) A gas cylinder of thickness 25 mm and has an internal diameter of 1500 mm.
The tensile stress in the gas cylinder material is not to exceed 100 N/mm2 .
Calculate the allowable internal pressure of the gas inside the cylinder. [9]

7. Derive an expression for the Euler’s crippling load for a long column with following
end conditions:

(a) both ends are hinged


(b) both ends are fixed. [16]

8. (a) Derive an equation for the deflection of an open coiled helical spring. [8]
(b) Find the maximum permissible axial load for a closely coiled helical spring
made out of 10 mm square rod with 16 coils of 12 cm mean diameter if the
maximum shear stress is limited to 300 N/mm2 , calculate also the deflection
under the load if N=0.84×105 N/mm2 . [8]
