PHOTOGRAPHIC OFFICERS

2501. Photography

1. The photographic policy for the Royal Navy, the operational sponsorship of the RN
Photographic Specialisation and the maintenance of photographic standards is the
responsibility of the Assistant Chief of Staff Carrier Strike & Aviation (CSAV). Fleet
Photographic and Image Analysis Officer (FPIA) is responsible for ensuring all necessary
photographic support is available to meet the RN’s requirement for photography, this
includes: Operational tasking, weapon serials, trials, exercises, intelligence and media
training, full details are contained in the BR 870 Manual of Naval Photography.

2502. Photographic Officer

1. Responsibilities. The Ship/Unit Photographic Officer is responsible for advising on


the uses and tactical applications of photography, seeking advice from the Fleet Regional
Photographic Officer/Warrant Officers based at Portsmouth, Plymouth and Faslane when
required. He should also maintain a close liaison with other specialist officers as
determined by task requirements.

2. In a CVS, at an air station or in a staff appointment, the Photographic Officer, unless


a photographic specialist, is normally a Fleet Air Arm officer of Lieutenant’s rank or above.

3. CVS Responsibility. In a CVS, the Photographic Officer is responsible to:

a. Commander (Air) for:

(1) Advising on the uses and operational applications of photography.


(2) Ensuring that all photographic work carried out by the ship’s
photographic staff is to a satisfactory standard iaw BR870.
(3) The organisation and executive control of the ship’s photographic
section.
(4) The administration and direction of the ship’s photographic ratings.
(5) The custody and maintenance of all photographic equipment in
accordance with current regulations.

b. Harrier Squadron Commanding Officers for the following:

(1) Ensuring air camera magazines are loaded and unloaded correctly.
(2) Providing instruction for aircrew in photography and assisting briefings
when required.

4. Air Station responsibilities. At an air station the Photographic Officer is responsible


to the Commander (Air) for all the items in sub para 3. Unless he is a Senior Upper
Yardman Officer, he may also be appointed for full flying duties.

5. Submarine Service. The Fleet Submarine Flotilla Photographic Warrant Officer is


responsible for the following:

a. Advising the Commander Operations on all aspects of submarine


photography.

b. The satisfactory performance of all photographic work carried out by


photographic sections iaw BR 870.

c. The organization and executive control of all photographic sections.

d. The administration and direction of the photographic ratings.

e. The custody and maintenance of section photographic equipment in


accordance with current regulations.

f. The installation and calibration of all submarine photographic equipment.

g. The instruction of submarine photographic operators in the use of their


equipment.

6. The Fleet Submarine Flotilla Photographic Warrant Officer and his staff are required
to go to sea in submarines in the course of their duties.
