looking over the top of her cup. She did not smile,
did not blink. When she finished she drained her
cup, set it and its saucer of the low table, which
again exposed her to me, and then stood.
As she stood, I did too. I being taller and still
unable to stop looking at the pale flesh beneath
her dress saw, very briefly, down the length of her
torso into moving shadows that blurred enticingly
deep below her navel.
Rebekah cleared her throat, reached out and
took my hand in a way that I might expect from an
acquaintance but not a stranger. As our eyes met,
she smiled warmly and said, "Come with me. It
happened in the room just above this one." She
glanced up, not nervously, but perhaps as if she
was curious about what we might find there
together.
Watching her, I set my cup down and followed
behind her, feeling entranced by her movements
as I watched her gown as it embraced each curve.
It became obvious then that although I believed I
might be in control, she was directing me. Her
beauty was hypnotic. I could not help but wonder
if she had worn the dress for distraction.
Rebekah released my hand as she turned to
open a narrow three-paneled door. Beyond it, I
saw stairs rising into the light shed by two more
dragon sconces. These were engaged in battle,
heads locked together. One had its teeth fastened
in the other's throat, while its opponent had
stabbed long fangs into the base of the first
dragon's neck. The blue flames flickered, eerily
