Introduction: A tomato is good for so many things. Can you name some
things we would use a tomato for? Bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich;
ketchup, tomato juice; tomato paste; chili soup, salsa, pizza sauce,
spaghetti sauce, tomato sandwich; tomatoes sliced with some salt (a
favorite of mine); I have canned tomatoes for soups in the years past. Our
lesson is about goodness, and what God has to say about goodness.

Message Good Sam

: Goodness is having the courtesy to be kind and considerate with others.
It is showing gentleness, and compassion toward them. God wants us to
show others this fruit every opportunity that we have. He will help us to live
a good and honest life before Him. Today in our lesson, some important
people forgot what it means to show the goodness of God. Goodness is
another word for kindness, righteousness, decency, and good.

Once upon a time, there was a young man who decided to take a
vacation. On his vacation, he met many different people. Some were kind,
others rude, and a few quite interesting. One day, while on his trip, this
young man decided to take a walk at the park near his motel. As he was
walking, along came some bad men and knocked him out taking his billfold
with his entire money and driver’s license. They left him lying on the
ground bruised and bleeding from his head that had received a hard hit.

A business man happened to be going through the park after getting off
work late and saw the young man lying on the ground. He noticed his head
bleeding, but since he did not want to mess up his new suit, decided to
hurry out of sight. A little later, a nurse came passing by. The nurse had
been working late having a long day and was afraid of strangers in parks
this late in the evening. She did not know if it was a trick to hurt her so she
quickly hurried to her car getting inside and locked the door breathing a
huge sigh of relief.
Pastor Sam was walking through the park praying for God to lead him in
some direction in order to reach the lost in the community. He heard some
groaning and turned to see this young man weakly asking for help holding
his bleeding head. Different thoughts passed quickly through his mind.
“Had someone hurt this man? Did he have a family waiting at home for
him? Was this how the Lord wanted him to reach into the community?”
Without another thought, he hurried toward the man, knelt down beside
him, and asked him if he could help him. He quickly dialed 911, and
helped the man to a more comfortable position. The emergency vehicle
soon arrived, and took him to the hospital.

The next day, Pastor Sam visited the young man and told him the plan of
salvation. The young man confessed his sins and asked Jesus Christ into
his heart. Soon, he was better, and began attending Pastor Sam’s church
in the community. He became so interested in learning about God and
began taking some classes at the local Bible College. God spoke to his
heart and asked him to surrender himself to him and serve others by telling
them about Christ. He eventually became the youth pastor of this small
community church and brought many youth to the Lord. It was not long
before the church grew - all because someone was willing to be obedient
to the Lord and show goodness to someone in need. There are many
people who need our help. Which of these three people showed mercy
and goodness? Galatians 6:10 says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity,
let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of
believers.” God’s Word says, “And do not forget to do good and to share
with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (Hebrews 13:16).

Questions for Discussion: What do you think about what the business
man who passed by the hurting man in the park? What do you think about
the nurse and how she felt? How do you think God felt about what the
Pastor did? Do you think the man who was hurt in the park would have
given his heart to Jesus if the pastor had not helped him that day? What
would you do if you saw someone who needed help at school or in your
neighborhood? (Share with children about safety and what would be best
to do in a situation like that). Sermon Adapted from Luke 10:30-36
