H OW many home-owners
deprive themselves of living

a team packed with Olympic stars
and national champions to win the
new Auckland Swimming League
competition.
The local company put its
sponsorship weight behind Speedo
Typhoons, the team that blitzed the
14-strong field to take the trophy
and a decent slice of the $20,000
prize money put up by the Absolute
Insurance Group.
Each team comprised around 30
athletes, covering ages from eight
to 76 years, and a total of 1200

owning her own Mt Albert-based
business, was a huge one - a
dream she turned to reality nearly
seven years ago, building one of
the strongest independent sales
team in Auckland.
Anne’s advice to people today is
“pursue the dream”.
“I think New Zealanders just have
to be more positive,” she says.
“Life is too short to get caught
up in the negative vibes that
we often face. We mustn’t get
dragged down by that!
“Sure, the economy has been
struggling and house sales are
low, but that shouldn’t hold
people back from moving on to
the next stages of their life – to
do the things they want to do.
“You’ve got to be positive and
chase your dreams. There comes
swimmers participated over the five
rounds.
Some of the country’s best
swimmers – from today’s
champions to yesterday’s Olympic
and national stars – took part in the
new high-profile event.
The Anne Duncan-sponsored team
featured Delhi Commonwealth
Games medalists Hayley Palmer
and Glen Snyders, as well as former
Olympians Danyon Loader and
Helen Norfolk. But the local flag
was raised strongest by one of the
agency’s senior consultants, Vincent
Barnao, a competitive swimmer at

a time when we all need to say,
‘Blow it – I’m going to do it!’
If we get trapped into ‘doing
nothing’ we end up looking back
and regretting it.”
Anne notes that while listings
and sales are down on the boom
times of four and five years
ago, house prices are holding
up well in the city fringe area.
With an economy now out of
recession and interest rates low,
she supports analysts who see
a bump in sales this year after
prices stabilised in Auckland
through 2010. On top of that,
this year’s Rugby World Cup can
only help lift confidence.
At the moment, it’s not doom
and gloom out there, she says.
Many houses over the last
year have sold at peak levels,
and there are plenty of buyers
looking for quality properties
and character do-ups. But a lack
of properties on the market is
disappointing.
“This is a supply and demand
thing – and that always dictates,”
says Anne. “The demand and
the prices are there for the right
properties, but we just don’t have
enough of them. People seem
to be pushing back their plans
and sitting and I don’t think they
realise the opportunity that’s
available to get a good price and
move on in their lives.”
