Peace Ride
Being the Peace
This August 1st, the 2010
Colorado Peace Ride came to a close
in Durango, Colorado. The day was a
warm one but hardly a match for all
the warmth felt in each person’s heart
that participated and volunteered
over the course of four very intense,
very breathtakingly beautiful days in
Southwest Colorado.  The mission of
the Colorado Peace Ride (CPR) is to
provide non-profit peace workers with
free or low cost retreats at the Sophia
Peace Center (SPC) in Dolores, CO. The
result is hundreds of individuals getting
involved in a peace movement that is
groundbreaking and profound. Let’s just
say we take the phrase, ‘peace be with
you’ very seriously.
The CPR is not your typical bike tour.
The tone is one of camaraderie, kindness,
compassion, and of course, peace. The
director, Reverend Isabelle begins each
morning with a circle gathering of all
volunteers including medical, road and
aide station crews, for a moment of
silence to connect to one another and
to the riders and the ride itself. Keeping
in mind, amidst the business, heat and
unknown day ahead, that the focus IS
peace and as such our actions, words,
thoughts, minds and hearts must BE
peace. We know that the only way to be
peace is to allow peace to be in us, and
this is what the CPR emulates at every
turn of every spoke of every wheel. Each
morning riders are invited to set their
“Intentions” for the day in writing: what or
who they
will be riding for, what they will sweat
for and what attitude they will maintain
throughout some of the most grueling
hours of climbs exceeding 11,000 feet.
On the road and at the aide stations,
volunteers cheer riders on and people are
giving each other peace signs incessantly.
On day three of the tour, the ride reached
the SPC where cyclists and volunteers
alike, enjoyed a reception, dinner and
presentation. Riders like Vince Halloran,
of Bikes for Haiti, presented their causes
and video footage gave us a first hand
feeling for how the effort, sweat and
work, would pay off in the end. During
the evening, everyone moved about the
35 acres of the Peace Center, walking
the labyrinth, learning of the mission of
the Center, connecting with one another,
enjoying the peace and quiet of the open
land. All present were invited to take part
and contribute to the energy, intention
and motivation of the ride. Not only
during those few days, but every day...
The Peace Ride is a way of life – it is a
consciousness to be maintained in every
facet of life; what you work for, strive for
and care about. On August 1st, people
went home with not only a sense of
accomplishment about the mountains
they had climbed but with a deep and
peaceful knowing that all mountains can
be climbed when peace and love are the
motivation and the fuel. Peace be with

Going Deeper: Love, Devotion & Meditation
A ship without wind goes
nowhere. It just sits there, bobbing along
on the great blue sea. The same applies to
a spiritual life without love and devotion.
And it certainly applies to meditation. Many
people are beginning to practice meditation
regularly. But how many are actually getting
somewhere? How many are getting the
boat out of the shipyard and into the water?
And how many are hoisting the sails and
being carried out of the harbor of their own
understanding and into the vast ocean of
God’s love? Love and devotion are what
will take you from your own limitations into
God’s limitlessness.

inside. It is in this quiet that closeness with
God can develop. This takes practice. So if
you are serious, you will need to do this daily.
Next, you need to learn how to tune in to the
spiritual world. You are a spiritual being with
the capacity to perceive things spiritually.
But if you haven’t paid much attention
to your spiritual senses, they will have
atrophied. So you will need to practice this
also. It will be subtle at first, but eventually
the spiritual world will become more real
than the physical world which you assume is
so concrete.

Meditation is not just about focusing and
relaxing; a successful meditation does not
come from mastering certain techniques or
skills. Real meditation is about developing
a relationship. In fact, it is about developing
the relationship – the relationship between
your soul and God within. It will be the
greatest love affair you will ever know.
Closeness in relationship comes through
Then you will need to cultivate your ability
to receive. Many people pridefully assume
they are good at this. But with humility
you will likely see that you are controlling,
reluctant to open, or afraid of rejection. With
scrutiny, you will also identify many habits
and wounds that prevent you from receiving
God’s love. Eliminating these blocks will
require the courage of self-examination and
transformation. If you are hoping for blissful

without really giving or listen without really
hearing, the relationship will not be close.
The same goes for developing a relationship
with God. If love and devotion are missing,
even if you go through the motions of prayer
and meditation, you will stay in the shallows.
So how would one go about entering into the
depths?

if you are willing to open in this way, God
will be more than willing to fill you.
As you feel loved, you will begin to fall in
love with God. There is no way you won’t,
because God is love and your soul has been
waiting for that love for lifetimes. God is

If you want to enter into intimate union
with God, you need to be alone with God.
You need to find time away from your
preoccupations and from your fidgety body,
busy mind and seething emotions. You need
to learn to drop deeper than body, thinking
your real soul mate and when God’s love
washes through you, feelings of love and
devotion to God will naturally grow in your
heart. That love and devotion will cause
you to open wider and to sail further into
the ocean of love. Then you will really be

Selflessness or Selfishness
For over 25 years,
Father Peter Bowes
has devoted his life in service to
God as an ordained Priest and
Master Teacher. As Co-Director
of the Order of Christ Sophia, he
teaches the ministers and guides
the Centers of Light around the
country. Known for his charisma
and sense of humor, Father Peter
is also an accomplished musician
and author who has composed
nine albums and three books about
Mystical Christian teachings. He
holds a Masters and a Doctorate
degree in Educational Psychology.

In this seemingly confusing
world, you have two choices: selfishness
or selflessness. If you think about yourself
and what you are looking to get, then you
are on the selfish side of the equation. This
outlook on life regards every situation
with a view of how it affects you, what
you can get out of it and whether you
will have your purposes advanced by the
outcome. In other words, the selfish style of
life looks at each event in terms of how it
pleases me, how it gets me what I want and
whether I will gain in the process. Selfish
is “me” centered without much thought
for other people or how what I do affects
anyone else.
If I need to clean out my car and I see
that there is trash on the floor or on the
seat, it will serve my purposes and make
me feel better if I toss those things out.
Where I toss those out makes a substantial
difference in whether I am selfish or
selfless. If I just toss them out of the car
window onto the road, then I am serving
my own interests and not in the least
concerned about who has to deal with that
rubbish after it leaves my personal space.
Then I am selfish. If I concern myself with
where I place that trash and make sure no
one else has to deal with it either, then I
am being less selfish. I might recycle and
that will make me selfless since all people
should recycle.
Another example is if I want to be noticed
in a group and do whatever it takes to
this goal if everyone has to deal with me
or look at me or listen to me and I will
get some satisfaction by the attention I
demand and get. I am not particularly
concerned about whether anyone else
gets attention or becomes noticed. I am
satisfied if I get what I want regardless
of what anyone else is trying to get. That
is me being all about me, and therefore,
selfish. If I want everyone around me to
get noticed or be better than others, then
maybe that is a step up on the evolutionary
scale and a little more conscious of others.
But it is still selfish for my personal gain. If
I want everyone, no matter who they are, to
be seen and understood and cared about,
then I am winding up on the selfless side
of the equation.
You might want to ask me, “What’s
wrong with being selfish?” Or, “Isn’t it
a good thing to take care of yourself?” I
would say, “Yes, it is a good thing to take
care of yourself because then you don’t
make other people take care of you.” In
fact, you should take care of your needs
and be responsible in order to make
sure you are not depending and leaning
on someone else to do that for you. It is
kindness not to make others do for you
what you can do for yourself. It is true that
you need to know yourself well enough to
be able to decide what you want. No one
can do that as well as you, so that is your
responsibility. There is also constructive
selfishness where you have to know
what clothes work well for you and what
cosmetics to use that will make you look
nice. That works. The problem starts when
you feel no care for what others feel and
just do things regardless of the effect
your actions or words have on others.
Then that is moving over to the extreme
of selfishness. When you don’t care about
anyone else but you, you demonstrate
extreme selfishness. When you are selfish,
the feelings of other people are your
last consideration, and in that state of
disconnection, you will step on people’s
toes and not even know that you did.
People will wonder what is wrong with you
that you don’t see other people or care how
your actions affect them.
Selflessness is the art of knowing
that other people are just like you with
the same feelings and needs as you. You
will treat them as you would like to be
treated and you will notice what they need
and try to help them get those needs met.
Selflessness is the state of not referencing
everything to you and just serving the
needs of the situation and the people
around you. When you understand love,
you relax in the knowing that the Universe
and God are taking care of everyone and
no one person is more important or more
special than another. God takes care of
everyone and completely affirms the
goodness in each person. A selfless person
is working on the side of God where all
life is supported and how you can help
becomes an inward drive. Consciousness
of the wider purpose of life and existence
begins to dawn in your heart as you
participate in the powerful presence of a
Divine Consciousness.

Open to All • Followed by Brunch
Not your average Sunday Service! Experience spirit moving
through songs, prayers, and powerful sermons that bring you
into closer connection to God — the God inside your heart,
inside your soul, to the God within. Each Service begins with
a silent meditation followed by a sermon relating directly to
the spiritual needs of the community, finally culminating in a
transformative Communion and personal blessing.
Daily Meditation & Communion
The beauty of God’s grace can be experienced with meditation
and Communion every morning of the week. We offer a 30
minute meditation followed by a reading and Communion
service, which is a wonderful way to develop and deepen your
meditation practice. There is no better way to start your day
than to receive the love, light and peace of Jesus and Mary. All
are welcome.
Evening Prayers
All are welcome to join us in ending the day with evening
prayers and songs. Community members from the Center
of Light come together to thank God, Jesus and Mary for
the blessings of the day and offer songs of gratitude and
thanksgiving. Join us in spreading light into the world with this
form of joyful devotion.

christian mysticism
Understanding the laws of the universe isn’t easy, which is
why the Centers of Light offer six sessions that explore the
foundations of Christian Mysticism. Open to all, this class gives
an overview of what Christian Mysticism is and what mystics
do, and, most importantly, it offers participants a chance to
experience the spiritual world first-hand. There is no restriction
on faith. You only have to believe that there is most likely a
power and intelligence that is higher than human intelligence.

It is a fairly common experience to read a passage from the
New Testament and ask, “I wonder what that means?” Bible
Contemplation at the Centers of Light helps unravel the deeper
meaning in Jesus’ teachings by exploring our inner and outer
life experiences and how they relate to the parables Jesus
taught. As a result, class members discover how these teachings
relate directly to their own lives and experiences. This class is
open to graduates of Introduction to Meditation and Christian
Mysticism.

The Tree of Life lessons are written for the purpose of unfolding
the soul alchemically and opening up spiritual consciousness
to the wisdom of God. Topics such as “What is light?,” “What
is love?,” or “What is the Creator?” are presented in a simple,
practical way that allows students to understand, discuss, and
contemplate their meaning. These ancient teachings are paired
with powerful hands-on experiences, giving students a tangible
way to connect to the reality of God’s spirit and power. This
class is open to graduates of Introduction to Meditation and
Christian Mysticism.

Christian Mysticism
Christian Mysticism is about being with God -- about listening
in deep meditation and prayer to receive God within. It is
about Love, not dogma or theology. Christian Mystics go
beyond opinion, beyond belief, and beyond blind faith into real
experiences that can only come from knowing our Creator, who
loved us enough to create us. Have you lost this connection to

Have you ever walked out of a theater affected by a powerful
film and wished for a forum to discuss it? If your answer is yes,
then movie nights at the Centers of Light are for you! These
monthly events provide the perfect way for people to connect
deeply after watching inspiring movies and share how our lives,
attitudes, and perceptions are challenged and changed. At
the Centers of Light we dedicate the following films to non-
profits that support causes related to the theme of the film. This
quarter, our offerings include:

Our intention for showing these films is to bring awareness
to the challenges facing our world everyday. With this new
sensitivity, we gain the power to make conscious choices
that help change the course of world events. Any voluntary

above. In addition, we dedicate prayers to these causes in order
to support them materially and spiritually. We invite you to join
us in any way, helping to change our world into one of peace,
justice and love.

On the first Wednesday of every month, the members of all 14
Centers of Light pray for peace, creating a surge of positive
energy for people all over the world. Open to all faiths, it is a
chance for hearts and minds to make a real difference in the
world. People pray for the cause of the month: healing, spiritual
awakening, love, solutions to hunger crises, war — anything that
the world needs in order to become a place of peace. Join us!
friday night lights
Some Centers of Light hold a guided meditation event at
the end of the week called “Friday Night Lights.” Join us for
a wonderful close to your work week and opening to your
weekend. This event varies week to week, however it always
begins with guided meditation, followed by an enjoyable
group activity. Around the country, each Friday Night Lights
is different as we move with Spirit and enjoy everything from
drumming around a bonfire, to watching movies, to playing
games. You can expect to leave this gathering with renewed
energy and an uplifted spirit, which will positively influence the
rest of your weekend.

 Life as a Novice: In Their Own Words
It was almost two years ago that I entered
the novice program at the Center of Light in Milwaukee. My
life had already undergone a number of significant changes in
the previous months. Dedicating myself to the spiritual path,
I had let a number of old habits and addictions fall away. I was
faithfully attending all the classes and services at the Center of
Light. I wondered how much different it would really be living at
the Center, since I was already spending so much time there.
After moving in, I quickly realized how radical a shift it was to be
living in a spiritual community dedicated to conscious relating.
Issues that could easily be ignored when I was living on my own
were coming up for me to look at because of the way they were
affecting other people. The priests would lovingly – but clearly
and directly – show me the negative decisions I was making. My
fears of rejection would cause me to react angrily, even as much
as I tried to maintain an outward even keel. Through it all, the
constant love of the priests, and the mirror of the community
showing me how my actions impacted other people helped me to
make radical changes in myself. Lifelong patterns of unconscious
anger fell away. As my heart opened, the unconditional love
of the priests would break it open even further. I got to know
parts of myself that I didn’t know existed while growing my
relationship with God, Jesus and Mary. It was very challenging
but incredibly rewarding work.
After my first year as a novice came to an end, there was no
question in my mind about taking the vows for a second year.
I was excited to see what another year of growth would bring.
About four months into the second year, I was asked whether I
would like to move to Chicago to join the novice program there.
By this time, I had ample experience following guidance from the
teachers and seeing the grace that followed. Though I was sad to
leave the priests and my brothers at the Center in Milwaukee, it
was an easy decision to make. Chicago is the home to one of the
Master Teachers in our Order, Father Peter. The opportunity to
spend more time with him as well as the excitement of growing
in a new community was not something I could pass up.
I moved a month after I was invited, faithfully believing that I
would find a good job and have my needs met. I ended up finding
a job that suited me so well and brought me amazement because
it showed me how well God knows me to give me such a perfect
situation. The new environment and new relationships with my
brothers and sisters at the Center in Chicago have helped to
expand my ability to give and receive love, showing up issues
that were in the way of complete connection with God. I have felt
incredibly blessed throughout my time as a novice, seeing how
God has always given me exactly what I need (and much more!).

With Centers of Light Online, personalized
spiritual growth and learning can happen
from anywhere. When you don’t live near one
of our 14 centers, consider doing your spiritual
work with us online.

THERE are currently 14 Centers of
Light across the United States. These are spiritual
communities in which members worship, learn and
serve together. For people who do not currently live
close enough to these Centers to attend services
and classes in person, the Center of Light Online
was created. From its inception nearly five years
ago, the Center of Light Online has drawn people
from across the United States and the world.
Online Classes
Center of Light (COL) Online utilizes conference
calls on the phone and on the computer through
Skype, a live chat/classroom with interactive video
and audio support. Taught within the US by Rev.
Mary Francis Drake (Boston Center of Light) and
internationally by Rev. David Corvini (New York
Center of Light), the classes include Introduction
to Meditation and Christian Mysticism, as well as
ongoing weekly Bible Contemplation and Tree of
Life classes.
Introduction to Meditation and Christian
Mysticism classes give students time to discuss
spiritual subjects and get practical answers to
real spiritual questions. They also incorporate an
experiential piece that allows the student to have a
direct, personal experience, bypassing dogma and
theology to teach the student that his or her own
experience cannot be debated nor taken away. Such
is God’s love and healing.
COL Online members who complete the
introductory series are eligible to apply for
Mystical Baptism just as a member of one our city
Centers would do. The preparation for baptism is
conducted by conference call with the COL Online
Priest and a Priest from the city Center in which
the member will be baptized.
Connecting Through the Internet
One might think that doing this kind of deep and transformative
spiritual work of Christian mysticism would not be conducive
to the online/phone conference medium. However, COL Online
students have found the opposite to be true. For most students, in
fact, the experiences, blessings, and spiritual growth are perceived
as more profound given the separation in time and space. It
proves to inspire members quite deeply with the knowledge that
God’s love and blessings transcend the physical laws of space and
time.
For some, it takes a real leap of faith to share their spiritual
aspirations and experiences in a seemingly impersonal setting.
These students quickly learn through their own experiences that
the integrity and authority of the Priests and the Centers of Light
is a powerful force through whatever medium it is received. For
the less cautious types, the COL Online medium is a natural
avenue for connecting with like-minded and like-hearted folks
seeking spiritual development in the mystical Christian tradition.
Students learn that the mystical way is a practical way that shows
us how to respond to the intentions behind the things we think,
do and say. This opens our minds to how the Christ within thinks,
feels and acts. We replace our doubts, fears and worries with Truth
and Reality. It teaches us how to not be jaded by the thinking of
the masses or the false concepts and limitations of culture and
family. We learn who we are from our Creator’s perspective and
empty ourselves of everything else. By placing our burdens
at the feet of the Light within, we can experience the Divine
within.
Additional Support
Many COL Online students seek further support and learning
through the many COL websites and videos that are readily
available online. From the live-streamed, interactive seminars
given weekly by Father Peter and Mother Clare to the online radio
station Sophia Radio, COL Online members quickly feel a part
of the greater Centers of Light community that is tied together
through the savvy support of our technology team.
COL Online members have gone on to be spiritual students in
the more advanced spiritual training, as well as vowed Sisters/
Brothers in the Order of Mercy. Some have moved to a city Center
to participate more fully in the spiritual community or join the
Novitiate programs offered in several of our city Centers.
People come to COL Online through many avenues, the most
common of which is Google searches. We smile to see God
using the modern technologies to connect spiritual seekers and
Teachers by whatever means available. We smile deeper still in
remembering the great love that God has for each one that would
allow for real transformation to happen at great distances that
would formerly have impeded connections. God can use anything
to aid us in growing in consciousness and love. We are happy to
offer the COL Online as one avenue for such growth.

As COL Online students get to know their Priests better

through regular classes and sessions, they inevitably realize
how vitally important it is to be taught by someone who is
truly connected with God as opposed to someone who is doing
their own thing. When people do their own thing, their views
are limited and filled with constraints, biases and unconscious
intentions. A teacher who is Self-Realized can help the student
align with the will of God and assist the student in keeping
upright intentions in all things.
