Thank you for participating in public comments on the draft

NNI EHS Research Strategy. The strategy aims to ensure the responsible development
of nanotechnology by providing guidance to the Federal agencies that produce the
scientific information for risk management, regulatory decision-making, product use,
research planning, and public outreach.

Submitted comments can be read at the NNI Strategy Portal (strategy.nano.gov).

"
The goals of this workshop were to:

c Bring together those who are new to nanoscale science, engineering, and technology as
well as those familiar with the NNI.

c Obtain stakeholder input regarding the goals and objectives of an updated NNI Strategic
Plan. This is currently under development and scheduled for completion by December
2010.

c Gather suggestions for the U.S. Government interagency task force that is drafting the
new plan. This is an update of the December 2007 NNI Strategic Plan (see
http://www.nano.gov/NNI_Strategic_Plan_2007.pdf).

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, the National
Nanotechnology Initiative at Ten: Nanotechnology Innovation Summit was held December 8-10,
2010, at the Gaylord National Convention Center just outside Washington D.C. The NNI
consists of the cooperative nanotech-related activities of 25 Federal agencies focused on
producing revolutionary and transformative technological breakthroughs. The NNI
Nanotechnology Innovation Summit brought together the nation's leadership in nanotechnology
research, development, implementation, policy and finance along with a showcase of the top
nanotechnology technologies generated through the NNI support.

The Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC) is the nation's largest forum for scientists,
technologists, engineers, managers, leaders and policy makers in the defense manufacturing
industrial base. The meeting is the product of a partnership of the Military Departments and
Agencies of the Department of Defense. An unprecedented 100% of those who provided
solicited feedback from last year's event said they would not hesitate to attend once again and
recommended their colleagues do so as well.

The 2010 DMC is hosted by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Missile Defense
Agency and will address the conference theme of removing the barriers to ³ACHIEVING AN
INNOVATIVE, RESPONSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL SECURITY INDUSTRIAL
BASE.´ All of the military departments, defense agencies, many non-defense agencies, industry
and academia will participate in this seminal national event; for both defense and non-defense
related manufacturing technology development and application.

NNI Supplement to the President's 2011 Budget As indicated in this

document, the total investment by NNI member agencies for 2011 is
nearly $1.8 billion for nanotechnology R&D. Among other subjects, the
document highlights Nanotechnology Signature Initiatives to accelerate
nanotechnology development in support of the President's priorities and
innovation strategy. NNI member agencies identified areas for these
initiatives ripe for significant advances through close and targeted program-level interagency
collaboration.

Nanotechnology is the ability to understand and control matter at the

nanoscale or about 1 to 100 nanometers. One nanometer is one billionth
of a meter. A sheet of paper is 100-thousand nanometers thick. Materials
can have different properties at the nanoscale. Learn more from:
"Nanotechnology: Big Things from a Tiny World".
