Objective

Modern electronic systems require high-quality, small, light weight, reliable, and efficient
power supplies. Linear power regulators, whose principle of operation is based on a voltage or
current divider, are inefficient. This is because they are limited to output voltages smaller than
the input voltage, and also their power density is low because they require low frequency (50 or
60 Hz) line transformers and filters. Modern power electronic switches can operate at high
frequencies. The higher the operating frequency, the smaller and lighter the transformers, filter
inductors, and capacitors. Typical converter switching frequency was limited to a few tens of
kilohertz (typically 20 to 50 kHz) in early 1980¶s. It is possible to achieve compact high
performance dc-dc converters by increasing the switching frequency. Here we make a review of
the methods used in dc-dc converters to enhance its performance.

Methodology

The classical dc-dc converters in switch mode operation are widely used in dc motor
drive applications. The complex structure of these converters suffers from the Electro Magnetic
Interference problem arises due to sudden changes in the voltage and current levels in the
waveforms, reduced output voltage and power transfer efficiency due to the effect of parasitic
elements in the circuit. This shortcoming can be overcome by incorporating an Electro Magnetic
Interference filter; zero voltage transition technique and voltage lift technique into the converter
circuit. Different methods are included in this paper to enhance the performance of a resonant
boost topology suitable for VHF (30 ± 300 MHz) dc-dc power conversion. This high operating
frequency gives the converter a fast frequency response and also reduces the physical size of the
passive components.

Conclusion

This review paper discusses different topologies that can improve the performance of the
resonant boost dc-dc converter. The performance efficiency of the dc-dc converters can be
improved by increasing the switching frequency. The shortcoming of classical converters due to
increased switching frequency can be reduced by the proposed control strategies. Electro
magnetic interference problem can be reduced by using an EMI filter at the input side of the
converter. Suitable voltage lift techniques can be used to obtain high output voltage than the
classical converters for the same duty ratio. The design implementations discussed are expected
to contribute to the development of VHF dc-dc converters. Thus it provides a way for power
electronics that can satisfy the needs for improved size, cost and performance that are demanded
by modern applications.
