Kevin started out as a teacher working within the ASD field in Australia, UK
& Kuwait but then worked as a consultant with the Geneva Centre for
Autism, Toronto working across Canada. He has presented many different
workshops & courses across Canada, the UK, US and Ireland; he also
presented at the World Autism Congress, South Africa in October 2006.
Course Description:
Understanding why we have friends, how we get them, what we do with them once we have them & how we
can keep them is a complex procedure; but complicate this by adding an ASD, with its social deficiencies &
making friends can be a very alien process, whatever the age!
This workshop explores how friends can typically be made; how to assess the strengths & weaknesses of
friendship making skills, creating a foundation to work from & looks at many strategies for
home/school/community that can help demystify the process.
The training will look at how pre-schools can identify needs and develop processes to assist in producing
children more able to sustain friendships, as well as peers who are not fazed by children who have social
difficulties. We will look at the community responsibilities to enhance potential for true integration and true
friendship. And we will also look at the future and to how there are adults with ASD who do have friendships,
marriages and socialising that works for them.
The workshop will benefit ANYBODY connected with an individual with an ASD – of all ages
(parents/professionals or individuals with an ASD). In some sections we will focus on pre-school development,
in other sections school responsibility but it will all be relevant as we are talking about the COMMUNITY
RESPONSIBILITIES. It will blend lecture style, video evidence and anecdotal stories with group activities and
discussion. Kevin tries to develop a relaxed atmosphere to the presentation to allow people to feel comfortable
in raising issues for discussion.
