Junior Kindergarten Fairy Tales
During the month of February, the Junior You need to have access to an oven, or even
Kindergarten was very busy discussing various
Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. The children
were given the opportunity to
bake, graph, compare, and create
projects surrounding the various
fairy tales and nursery rhymes
that we were reading and
discussing. Please take the time
to review and recite the nursery
rhymes and retell the fairy tales
they have learned.
In addition, two new centers were introduced
in our classroom. Our Dramatic Play Area has
been turned into a doctor’s office, where the
children are enjoying role playing the doctor,
the nurse, and the patient. We have also created
a classroom Post Office. Look for letters being
sent home, as your child will be visiting our post
office to mail letters to family and friends!
The month of March finds us starting a new
unit about the Five Senses. We will be exploring
all five senses, starting with sight and hearing,
and then moving into tasting, touching and
smelling. Feel free during your child’s show-
and-tell days to bring things that deal with one
of our five senses. We will be conducting a
variety of science experiments, where children
will have the opportunity to observe and
discover how they use their senses and how one
sense is dependant on the other.

Kindergarteners Cooking
As we give out a weekly newsletter, we
thought it valuable to enrich parents on the
validity of cooking in our curriculum. Enjoy the

Measure, Pour, Mix, and Create!
Children’s literature lends itself to
fabulous opportunities for incorporating
cooking in the classroom. There are so many
titles that lend themselves to thematic units as
well as phonetic activities.
The cooking Center is very easy to set-up.
better, have one in your classroom.
The children can benefit even more if they
experience what transpires during cooking
time. Some of the supplies found at this center
include pots, pans, utensils, and measuring
cups.
At the cooking center, children explore
concepts in math, science, reading and
writing.
Emergent reading skills are practiced by
reading through recipes. Children practice
reading by using step by step recipe cards
while they are also learning vocabulary words.
Fine motor skills are exercised by pouring,
chopping and peeling. They learn about
nutrition, hygiene and where products come
from. They observe scientific changes as
liquids become solids. Students are then
encouraged to “write” (from scribble to
random lettering to inventive spelling)
according to their developmental level, what
they learned at this center. Math skills are
practiced as they count, learn about
fractions, and create and
interpret graphs.
Children are encouraged to
be risk-takers and try new
foods they may have originally avoided eating
by appearance. The ever-loved Dr. Seuss
story Green Eggs and Ham was read to the
children before they ventured in trying their
own green eggs! Students helped cook green
eggs and then were encouraged to try this
strange-looking version of scrambled eggs
(with green food coloring)…Some even asked
for seconds!
Another very popular old tale was Stone
Soup. Children learned where there is a will,
there is a way. A delicious soup was created
by adding simple ingredients. Children
washed, peeled and chopped the vegetables.
The final product was a delicious vegetable
soup. There are various versions of this story
and if you read more than one, children can
compare and contrast.
Finally, incorporating cooking in the
classroom promotes creativity and
independence.

First Grade Teachers
Healthy Habits in Second Grade
Throughout our unit of study about Nutrition
and Healthy Habits, second graders participated
in a number of activities to help
understand what is needed for
good health and wellness.
Second graders went to
Sklavenitis Supermarket to see
how they provide choices for
nutritious meals with dairy products,
meats, grains, fruit and vegetables from Greece
and other parts of the world.
At school our researchers applied data collected
about various foods to create life size models of
nutritious meals for their Nutrition Exhibition.
As a culminating activity, the second graders
in Mantahodapolis shared a musical
dramatization to show what they had learned
about making healthy food choices.
We had the pleasure of working with IB
Theatre Arts students, Teddy Baos and Petros
Angelou, who directed and motivated second
graders to perform!
Children learn in many ways. This unit of
study offered students the opportunity to show
what they had learned through songs,
movement, designing, writing, speaking as
well as planning, and working closely with
classmates to accomplish various tasks. We
strive to help each other be well-balanced-to
eat right, feel right and have a good time as we
work and play with others.

Second Grade Teachers
Third Graders Travelling to Space
Greetings from third grade! We have been
very busy lately. In Science, students have
been learning about Space with a focus on the
Sun, Earth and Moon. Students have been
conducting explorations, reading and
researching to learn more as we have explored
the unit of study. Students also
created projects about a space topic of their
choice. Projects were on display in the atrium,
hopefully everyone had a chance to
check out their beautiful creations and
see all of their hard work. Students
also went on a field trip to the
planetarium to learn more about space.
We are working on writing research

reports also regarding space. Students have
been learning research skills using books,
internet and encyclopedias. They have
researched a topic relating to space and have
written papers on their chosen topic.
In addition to studying Charlotte’s Web, we
have started literature circles comprised of
groups mixed with students from both classes.
In literature circles, students read a variety of
novels as a group and discuss different elements
of their book.
Looking ahead we will be starting our
inventions unit and also studying biographies as
well. Please mark your calendars for the Third
grade Bake Sale coming up on Friday, April 8,
2011.

Third Grade Teachers
Experiments in Fourth Grade
The clickety-clank of our Simple Machine
Unit kept the Fourth graders excited and
involved in a number of opportunities for hands-
on learning and group work. The classes were
engaged in a number of experiments including:
lifting ten dictionaries with a finger, shooting a
catapult using their body force and a classroom
object, measuring force with a spring scale,
experimenting with gears and a number of other
fun activities.
Additionally, the Fourth graders
saw how Math and Science are
integrated as we learned and used
the metric system and they did
exercises in order to find the mean
and graphing data. By performing the
experiment, “The Marbelous Marbles” we
incorporated all these skills including group
work and cooperation among our students.
Furthermore, this exciting unit will conclude
with our Fourth graders inventing their own
device using a simple machine which will
present and try to sell them using their charm
and persuasive abilities. We are excited to see
whose machine will persuade the most people to
want to buy it. Students learned a lot about
simple machines in this Unit and proved once
again that they are talented and creative.
In Writing, students have been consistently
practicing their craft as writers. They have
been working on summary writing, book
reports, personal responses, poetry, timelines,
creative writing and persuasive writing. We
have continued working on the writing process
of brainstorming, mapping, outlining and
editing. Our students are constantly using the
Writing Center and improving their
grammatical structure, vocabulary, detailed
writing and expanding their thoughts.
Both classes enjoyed their classroom reading
and activities that related to the Simple
Machines. Students in Ms. Papathanasiou’s
class focused on the “Titanic” and
informational books and Ms. Soteres’ class
focused on Science Fiction with a short story
called “Iron Giant”.
In Social Studies, we have taken
an in depth look at Map Skills.
More specifically they have
studied the compass rose, scale,
key, longitude and latitude using an
atlas and globe. We will continue to study
map skills throughout the rest of the year.
In Math, long division has been a major focus.
At this point we have extended to fractions
and will continue to move along in order to
cover all concepts. At home, please continue
reviewing the basic multiplication facts as
many of our students have not gained the
speed they need to perform at their best.
The next Unit will be Rainforest where our
major focus will be the ecosystem, endangered
species, plants and environmental awareness .
This unit is always of high interest to students
as it has a direct relationship to their own
beings and the environment.
Lastly, we want to thank all our parents and
especially our room mothers who have shown
such devotion and dedication to our class
through parties, communication and our very
successful bake sale! You have proven that a
successful student means a team of parents
and teachers working together.

Fifth Graders Quest for Courage
It has been a very exciting time as Fifth
graders prepared for their original play
production, “The Quest for
Courage”. Students have been
learning about the many tasks that
are necessary to create a theater
production. They have helped make
props, and design scenery and sets.
Each student has become an actor or an actress
and has adopted the role of a unique character
on stage. Fifth graders learned songs and
dances to accompany their parts also.
Many thanks to our colleagues, friends, and
parents, who have generously given their time to
work with our students in this special project.
We couldn't do it without you!
Students worked hard on the previous
Geology unit. A highlight of this unit has been
the PowerPoint presentations on the different
geology topics designed by groups of students
working together. The finished product will be
shown as part of Student-Led conferences.
Besides investigating the theater, Fifth
graders are reading Greek Mythology and
studying Ancient Greek History. Students have
written stories, essays, summaries, and literature
responses to enhance their learning. Also,
students have been constructing organized, well
composed paragraphs supported with important
facts and details. During writing sessions
students have been reviewing grammar rules as
well as tips for writing correctly and clearly.
Students have frequent invitations to write in a
variety of styles and genres. Also, with the
Writing Center open to us, students will have
opportunities to fine tune their skills and receive
one-to-one advice on how to improve their
writing.
The Fifth grade will begin reading “The
Lightening Thief” for the next literature book.
We are all hard at work, as Middle School
will soon be here!

Extending Math Explorations
This trimester has been very busy in the
math lab. We have been extending previously
covered topics such as counting and addition
in First and Second grades, and exploring new
topics such as division, fractions and decimals
in Third, Fourth and
Fifth grades.
This coming trimester in First and Second
grades we will be exploring fractions, and in
grades Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth we
will be exploring topics in geometry and
measurement.
Fractions, geometry and measurement are
all very concrete and hands-on topics that are
easily identified in the real world around us.
This would be a great opportunity to bring
math into your kitchen (fractions and
capacity), and everywhere else you go
(geometric shapes are everywhere you look).

Busy Greek Language Classes
Καλές Απόκριες !
Greek classes have started learning about
“Apokries” (Greek Carnival) and its customs
that take place during this time. They have
also started preparing for the Greek
Independence Day celebration. The
Elementary School performance will take
place at the ACS Arts Center, on March 24th at
1:45 p.m. Please mark your calendars. All
grades (JK-5) will perform on stage.
In the months of January and February:
Greek Language A classes (Greek native
and near-native speakers):
Students in grades 3-5 started to work on their
history books: 3rd grade “Odyssey”, 4th
Persian Wars and Ancient Athens (Golden
Age) and 5th grade Byzantine history. They
have also been working hard on various
writing activities and grammar units (i.e. 10
parts of speech, verb-endings and tenses).

 Our JK students have worked
on the units: “Opposites’,
“Shapes”, “Numbers”,
“Fairy Tales” and learned fun
songs.
KG students have completed their first
alphabet book from A to Ω and have learned a
poem/song for each letter.
In First grade, students are progressing in
reading and writing.
In Second grade, students have been
working hard in Greek grammar completing the
10 parts of speech. They have also read
many interesting stories and poems in their
Ανθολόγιο.
Greek Language B classes (non-native
speakers):
Second through Fifth grades have continued
working on the unit:
Sequence of Time: Students studied the myths
connected with Alkionides meres and
Amygdalia tree as well as the customs and
traditions for the months of winter.
Mythology: Students in Fourth grade continued
with the labors of Hercules.
Environment: Students in Fifth grade worked
on environmental problems and their
effects as an introduction to a new unit starting
on March, Animals Under Extinction in Greece.
Our Kindergarten students are learning the
vocabulary for Apokries through various games
and activities. Also they’ve been introduced to
the writing and recognition of Greek letters.
In First grade students are working on the
letters of the alphabet through phonetic
vocabulary, writing activities and relevant
games.
In Second grade, students prepared a
performance on the Greek book Κασγάς στο
Μαγερειό. The script is a practice to nutrition
vocabulary and it is also related to the Wellness
Week. Also students continued working on
letters, words formation and vocabularies.
In Third grade, students cover the units Food,
the Wild Animals, the Domestic Animals,
Numbers.
In Fourth grade, students covered the units
Weather, Animals of the Forest, Animals under
Extinction.

Arabic Class Highlights
The Arabic classes have been busy working
on their curriculum and doing their best in
every level.
Kindergarten students have almost
completed the alphabet in Arabic
and will start reviewing the
letters in their new alphabet
book. In First grade students
are excited working in their new
textbook and have started to read paragraphs
and to write in sentences correctly. Our
Second graders are reading short stories and
answer reading comprehension questions in
writing. In Third grade, along with reading,
students are focusing on grammar, writing
sentences and spelling. Our Fourth and Fifth
graders have done a great job reading stories,
spelling new vocabulary and working on
challenging grammar activities.

6 Memory Tricks for ADHD Students
Use these six strategies to help students
with attention deficit retain information
and remember what they learn

Children with ADHD and learning
disabilities often have trouble remembering
and retaining information taught in class. To
improve their memory skills, help them create
links and visual, auditory, and conceptual
associations between bits of
information. Here are six ways to
do that:

1. Draw or create vivid pictures depicting
information that needs to be memorized.
Since memory is enhanced by exaggeration,
emotion, action, and color, the more ridiculous
and detailed the image, the better. To help an
attention deficit student remember the meaning
of the word felons (which sounds like melons),
make a picture of melons dressed in prison
clothing marching off to jail. For more
examples, see vocabularycartoons.com.
2. Teach memory strategies.
Some popular mnemonics include HOMES (the
Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie,
and Superior) and Dead Monsters
Smell Bad (steps for long division: divide,
multiply, subtract, bring down).
3. Create acrostics or whole sentences.
“Every Good Boy Does Fine” is an excellent
way to recall the sequence of lines in the treble
clef (EGBDF).
4. Try melody and rhythm to teach a series or
sequence.
There are raps, rhymes, and songs to help
attention deficit students memorize
multiplication tables, days of the week,
presidents of the United States, and so on.
5. Use songs specially created to
teach grade-level content.
Musically Aligned
(musicallyaligned.com) creates music
and lyrics geared to teach a science
curriculum. For physical science, there are
songs like “Electromagnets” and “Heat, Light,
and Motion.” For teaching concepts in life
science, there are “Food Chain Gang” and
“Decomposers.”
6. After the lesson, have students list the
things they remember.
Ask them to do so as fast as they can, to
increase memory recall. “

The pace is picking up as
we move into our last
trimester and the students
are moving right along! As this second
trimester is coming to a close, I am noticing
marked improvement in the students’
communication and comprehension!
In First grade, we have been focusing on
learning sight words to further reading
comprehension and to use in creating
meaningful sentences. With the Second,
Third, and Fourth grade students the focus has
been on developing basic vocabulary based on
content they are studying in their homerooms.
Interwoven in these content-based lessons, we
are furthering reading
comprehension by focusing on skills needed to
break down the meaning of text:
identifying main idea and details, asking and
answering questions, and summarizing.
Fifth grade has just finished a study on
idioms and is continuing to work on
building their descriptive writing skills to
enhance oral and written communication.
Please continue encouraging your child to
practice their English outside of school.
Reading a book in English together is a great
way to familiarize your child with old and new
words while also working on comprehension.
The internet has some fantastic resources
and fun activities that can provide additional

Artistic Students
Kindergarten artists have been busy in the
art room. They have made a number of
seasonal art projects including a paper mache
shaker that was used during the winter music
concert. The past month has been dedicated to
an in depth color study. Kindergarten students
now know the colors of the rainbow can name
the primary colors, identify warm and cool
colors and are expert color mixers.

First grade students made adorable pastel
drawings of Frosty for the winter concert as well
as several other seasonal projects. After the
holidays, first graders began a unit on color.
They can tell you all about ROYGBIV and how
to use the color wheel as a tool to learn about
color. They studied Mondrian and made
paintings inspired by the master using primary
colors. They are currently working on warm
and cool color landscape drawings.
Second grade mastered nutrition by learning
about food in their classrooms. They brought
that knowledge to the art room to help them
create 3D well-balanced meal models. These
models were displayed
during their terrific Food Show along with food
face drawings inspired by Spanish painter
Arcimboldo. Each student made a chef hat that
was also worn during the show.
Third graders learned a few tips on drawing
realistic facial features. They applied what they
learned to create a Cubist oil pastel drawing
inspired by Picasso. In preparation for Wellness
Week, each student in the third grade was asked
to create a poster to be displayed that addressed
their views of what it means to be well. The
posters were entered in a contest.

Fourth grade had fun
discussing and viewing
optical illusions. After
learning a few tips they
created several of their own Op Art
pictures. Next up fourth grade artists studied
abstract art and cubism. Like the third grade,
they created Picasso inspired portraits. Fourth
grade also entered the Wellness Week poster
contest. They created inspirational posters that
were displayed in the theater lobby.

Fifth began the year learning a unique
painting technique and created stunning
paintings of birch trees. Each fifth grade student
also had a hand in building paper mache props
to be used during the Fifth Grade Play. In order
to advertise for the play, each student created a
poster to be displayed on campus. Outside of
class fifth graders completed posters for
Wellness Week as well. Congratulations to
second place contest winner, Zacharias
Sitinas.
Each month all classes are still working
hard to be crowned the title “Art Class of the
Month”. Points are earned based on behavior.

Musical Notes
We began the second trimester in a very
joyous way, with a fantastic Winter Concert!
The students did an incredible job and I am
so proud of all of their efforts. Soon, we will
begin working on music to prepare for our
Spring Concert, and I am confident the
students will be just as successful.
Besides our Winter Concert, students in
Fifth and Second grades have been working
hard in the New Year on preparation for class
productions. Our Fifth grade play was a huge
success this year and students did a great job
in music class preparing and writing songs.
Our Second graders have been working on
brand new pieces for their “Food Show”
which was on March 2nd. They have all
worked so hard and can now revel in all their
hard work.
Our Kindergarten and First grade students
have been learning about program music, or
music that tells a story. They have written
stories while listening to songs, using their
very vivid imaginations to depict very
different scenes and ideas. They have also
learned about some very important pieces in
the music world, such as “Carnival of the
Animals” and “Peter and the Wolf”, two of the
world’s most famous program pieces.
Students have shown me just how inventive
and creative they are making
stories and ideas come to life as
though that’s what the composer
had in mind all of the time.
The Third and Fourth grade

students have continued work on their recorders
this term. I am always impressed with the hard
work they put in at learning how to play new
pieces. Although we have
finished recorders for the season, I encourage
students to continue practicing at home and to
continue playing belt tests whenever they can.
If a student would like to play for me, they
know they can always come by after school
anytime.
We are now working on learning about the
form and function of musical pieces. Students
are now able to find the theme, chorus, bridge
and coda of composed pieces of music.
Students are also talking in depth about program
music and how to analyze differing styles and
genres of music. I am always so impressed with
how they respond to classical music and how
hard they work to learn and understand it.
Bravo!
All of the elementary students have been
doing a wonderful job and I look forward to
continued success! We will begin work soon on
Spring Concert songs. When lyrics are sent
home, I encourage all parents and
family to sing along with their child(ren) so that
they can learn songs quickly.
I look forward to seeing all of you later in the
spring as these songs will be performed on our
ACS Athens Theater stage.

season in the elementary school. Students are

The 5th grade students have been so
dedicated and determined to learn all of the
choreography involved in their play
production. They have been learning and
composing various steps to accompany their
different musical pieces. We are having a ton
of fun working together and uniting our
creative ideas so to comprise a final
masterpiece!
Other News…
The 2nd graders have been making
connections between their nutrition unit and
their exercise levels. They have been bridging
a relationship between food nutrients and
physical energy. Making healthy snack
choices has been a priority in their daily lives.
We also have a senior student now aiding us.
His name is Anastasi Mourgelas, and he is a
positive role model for our young ones.

upcoming March 25th celebration!
Also, the swimming unit will begin on
April 4th for grades 1-5 (more details will be

Computer Lab Highlights
Grade 5 students are currently using an
educational programming language called
“Scratch”. Scratch makes it easy to create
interactive stories, games, and animations.
Scratch projects are made up of objects called
sprites. You can change how a sprite looks and
sounds and you can tell it what to do by
snapping together graphic blocks into stacks,
called scripts. If this sounds confusing you can
try it by downloading it at www.scratch.com
and see what you can
create!! Grade 5 students can also access
“Scratch” through Moodle.
Grade 4 students are learning about
PowerPoint in preparation of a presentation that
they will be making on the rainforest. Grade 4
also completed working on a website
www.edheads.com which reinforced their
understanding of the parts of simple machines
such as, gears, inclined planes, levers, pulleys,
screws, wedges and wheel and
axle.
Grade 3 students have been
working on research into their
unit on Space. Their curiosity
and questions were answered
with the help of
www.nineplanets.org and www.spacetoday.org.
Grade 3 also had extra computer time to work
on keyboarding skills.
Grade 2 students have been using “Microsoft
Word” to type up their healthy meal menu.
They have learned how to write, edit and save
documents for various writing activities and
they also began practicing their keyboarding
skills with “Type to Learn”.
Grade 1 students have been using
www.starfall.com for beginning reading skills
including letter blends and phonics practice.
Grade 1 also used a new drawing program
called “Tux Paint” for some beautiful
illustrations.

The Virtue of the Month is Honor
What is Honor?
Honor is living with a sense of respect for
what you believe is right. It is living by the
virtues, showing great respect for yourself,
other people, and the rules you live by. When
you are honorable, you don’t have to feel
ashamed of who you are or what you are
doing. You are worthy of respect. You set a
good example.
Why Practice It?
Without honor, people act disrespectfully and
do things which make them and others feel
ashamed. They just do what they want without
