In the dramac producon of a growing faith, Jesus is the star actor, but God is the author and
producer. All of us are the supporng cast. The audience is the world around us, listening to
hear what God has to say and watching how we respond to it. Lent is a sharing experience. We
share who we are and God shares who God is. Faith grows, as we come to know God. None of
us, of course, can comprehend the totality of God’s providence, but in Jesus Christ, God reveals
what is needed for our faith and life.
God wants to be known and it is possible for us to experience God’s presence. As people made
in God’s image, we all have an inner longing and an awareness of the truths of God’s creave
LENTEN MEDITATION
plan for us. It has been put into words at mes in our human history. Hebrew scripture does
this in the Ten Commandments and in the words of the prophets. Jesus gave us the words of
parables and the Sermon on the Mount. God shared God’s self most fully in the person of Jesus;
who he was and how he responded to those around him. In all of these, we have God sharing
with us and becoming known to us.
What do we discover about God and life in this self-revelaon? First of all, our God-given life does
have meaning. Our existence is not merely as passing bits of maer. Life has a purpose and we
are part of that creave purpose. Just as Jesus brought hope to an oppressed and disheartened
people, so we can provide new vision that enriches our world’s inner being.
God is love and we are called to love. God is unqualified truth and each of us is called to be
perfectly honest and transparent in our words and acons. The God, who set our lives in order,
values every part of that order and life. Like God, we should accept and value every one. God
was present to us in Jesus and we should be truly present to one another in love and caring.
God’s fullness is revealed in us and can be seen by others through us.
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and aer fasng forty days and
forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these
stones to become loaves of bread.” Mahew 4:1-3
Fasng has been used throughout the ages to prepare the people of God for the great things God has in store
for them. As we pray through this season of transion and Divine imaginaon, I am calling, I am asking, I am
requesng that the enre church become involved in some form of prayer and fasng. The following are several
types of fasts that can be used to develop spiritual power and clarity.
Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he
asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast, eang only fruits and
vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.
March 9 – March 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
March 20 - March 27 Eat only two meals a day before 6 p.m.
March 28 – April 2 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
April 3 – April 9 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added.
April 10 – April 16 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added
April 17 – April 23 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.
Please consult your doctor before proceeding with fasng. If you take medicaon or have any parcular ailment, it
is important to first communicate with your physician.

SERMON NOTES
T
here are many cases listed in the Bible where giving is discussed. We need to be able to talk
spiritually about giving. Jesus watched at the treasury to see how people gave. He wasn’t checking
amounts, he was studying people.
A woman broke an alabaster box of ointment and poured it on Christ. Christ commented the deed to
others present. He said this gi would be for a memorial to her (Mahew 26:6-13; 14:3-9). When Cain
and Abel brought offerings, their gis were approved, disapproved, and recorded for us (Genesis 4:1-5).
When the Israelites gave for the tabernacle, their gis were noted (Exodus 35:4-29). Exactly what the
woman gave to Elijah is recounted for us (I Kings 17:8-16). Scripture menons, approvingly, Asa’s gis to
the house of the Lord (I Kings 15:14-15). Giving was public under David (I Chronicles 22:28-29).
STEWARDSHIP
They sat Joash’s chest outside the gate of the house of the Lord. People dropped money into it there.
Nothing secret about that! (II Chronicles 24:8-10) The early Chrisans “brought and laid…at the apostles’
feet” (Acts 4:34-35). Nothing private about that, either. Ananias and Sapphira were struck dead for
hypocrisy, not for giving in public (Acts 4:34-5; 11). Paul certainly was not secreve about his collecon
for the saints at Jerusalem (II Corinthians 8:9; I Corinthians 16:1, 21). Nor did he keep sll about what the
Philippians gave to him (Philippians 4).
We believe the maer boils down to move in giving. Is it for show or for witness? Our giving needs
to reflect that God keeps on giving to us. “Give as you have been given.” Our love for the Lord should
make our giving joyful. God is never outdone in generosity. Our stewardship is tested by our sharing the
blessings God gives us.
