Preface

The SADDLEBACK BIBLE STUDY SERIES has been developed as a curriculum for small groups.
It is designed to help you and your group members build greater spiritual health and balance in your
lives. Each curriculum will cultivate the five biblical purposes of the Church found in the Great
Commandment (Matthew 22:36-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

These studies have come together through the efforts of many at Saddleback Church. Saddleback
pastors, staff members, the technical support team, and small group leaders too numerous to
mention have offered their expertise, vision, and support to this project for many months.

We pray you will find the SADDLEBACK BIBLE STUDY SERIES helpful as you and your group
seek to deepen the Five Purposes of God in your life, your group, and your church.

Foreword
You have just opened up a power tool. It doesn't look like a tool, it doesn't feel like a tool, and it
doesn't have a power cord, but it's definitely a tool! This tool was designed for you, an ordinary
Christian, the kind of Christian who sincerely desires to live for God and yet struggles to stay on
track. If you are the kind of Christian whose life is fast-paced and full but not always fulfilled, this
tool is for you.

This curriculum tool is like any tool: it needs to be used. Put this tool into action and it will be
productive in your life and in your group. This Purpose Driven Life group series may have a few
features that are new to you, but we encourage you to give them a try. A tool is most effective
when used for its intended purpose. This curriculum tool has three intended purposes.

• Digging deeper into the Word of God

Each of the six lessons in this curriculum includes study of at least one core biblical passage.
This interactive study not only allows for discussion of the passage, but also provides
opportunity to discuss practical application as a response to the passage. Tremendous spiritual
power is experienced when a group wrestles with not only the meaning of a passage but also its
meaning for their lives.

• Building community

No Christ follower was intended to live in isolation. The Bible speaks nothing of lone ranger
faith and more than 50 times in the New Testament, God speaks of a "one another" type of faith.
One of the great benefits of group life is that it provides you with a practical laboratory in which
to experience New Testament community. In group life you find a place to belong and people
with whom to share your life.

• Sharpening your focus on God's purposes

One unique feature of this tool is that it seeks to balance all five purposes of God in your group
experience. Without an intentional focus on including all five purposes, most groups focus on
fellowship or become a Bible study group only. This study is designed to help create and
nurture a hunger and passion to live out all God's purposes for His children.

So, pick it up. Don't be afraid of it. Use it. Allow it to stretch and challenge you. God has put
your group together and He wants to use each member in your life in addition to this tool. He wants
to use you in their lives as well. So pray for your group and come to your group time ready to
participate. May you build a life that is pleasing to God.

INTRODUCTION TO THE
SADDLEBACK BIBLE STUDY SERIES

Using the Saddleback Bible Study Series

In Your Small Groups

Outline of each session

You are about to embark on a life-changing experience in your small group. Studying God's Word
together with other believers always impacts our lives in ways we can't imagine.

As your group studies the Bible together, this study guide will help you strengthen and deepen
God's five purposes for your lives. One of the unique features of this curriculum is that it uses the
five purposes as the format for each session. When you see the following symbols and elements in
the study guide, you will know the particular purpose that section promotes. The format of each
session is as follows:

CONNECT (FELLOWSHIP) – The foundation for spiritual growth is an intimate

connection with God and His family. The questions in this section will help you
get to know the members of your group so you'll begin to feel a sense of belonging
and family.

GROW (DISCIPLESHIP) – This exciting section introduces a new component

for many of you: video teaching. Each week you will watch Pastor Rick Warren's
teaching video for the session. We ask you to follow along using the teaching
outline in your study guide along with your Bibles. After the teaching video,
discuss the questions that follow. The questions are designed to bring you to a
deeper understanding of the Bible and to help you consider how the truths of the Bible can impact
your life.

Memory Verse – In each session we provide a verse to memorize. While this may be a challenge
for you, please take this opportunity to grow deeper in your walk with God in this key spiritual
habit. The memory verses are also included on page 53 in the Small Group Resources section. You
may tear out this page and cut the verses into wallet- or purse-size cards for easy access.

SERVE (MINISTRY) – Nothing is more fulfilling than using your God-given
gifts to serve and help meet the needs of others in God's family. This section will
help make that desire a reality. You will be encouraged to discover your unique
shape and be challenged to take steps to serve those inside and outside your group.

SHARE (EVANGELISM) – The thought of sharing your faith can be

scary and relationally awkward. Such feelings are common and
understandable. But God can and wants to use you to reach those around you for
Christ. The SHARE section is designed to give you and your group
practical, manageable steps for sharing Christ that can become a part of
your everyday life.

WORSHIP – You were made for God's pleasure. In each small group session you
will have the opportunity to surrender your heart to God and express your worship
to Him. You will be introduced in this section to various forms of small group
worship including prayer, singing together, and sharing what God is doing in your
lives. This portion of your session can be very meaningful for your group. If
singing and praying in a group is new to you, feel free to not participate until you
feel comfortable.

Additional Study. If your group wants a little more Bible study and has the time, we provide two
or three additional questions to discuss. This is optional.

Preparation for Next Week. This section is for groups or individuals willing to do more study
during the week. You could use these questions to go deeper biblically, reflect on the lesson, or
record your thoughts in a journal. This section generally includes cross-references relevant to the
subject you will study the coming week. It will also include questions and practical ideas for
applying the upcoming week's lesson.

Purpose Driven Life Reading Plan. The Purpose Driven Life by Pastor Rick Warren parallels the
weekly lessons in this study guide. The book is a powerful way to go deeper in your understanding
and commitment to God's purposes. Following the reading plan in the book will enhance your
group experience as well.

40 DAYS OF PURPOSE
Pastor Rick Warren

WHAT ON EARTH AM I HERE FOR?

I. The Consequences of Not Knowing Your Purpose

1. Without knowing your purpose, life will seem ______________________.

"The sun still rises and it still goes down…the wind blows…round and round and back
again. Every river flows into the sea…[then] the water returns to where the rivers began,
and starts all over again. Everything leads to weariness..." Ecclesiastes 1:5-8 (TEV)

2. Without knowing your purpose, life will seem ______________________.

"No matter how much we see, we're never satisfied; no matter how much we hear, we are
not content. History merely repeats itself. Nothing is truly new…" Ecclesiastes 1:8b-9a
(LB)

3. Without knowing your purpose, life will seem ______________________.

"You can't straighten out what is crooked; you can't count things that aren't there."
Ecclesiastes 1:15 (TEV)

II. The Benefits of Knowing Your Purpose

"…I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and
wants me to be. No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing
all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I
strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is
calling us up to heaven." Philippians 3:12b-14 (NLT)

1. Knowing the purpose of your life will give your life _______________.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. If you responded to God by praying that simple prayer with Pastor Rick Warren,
congratulations. Others in your church and many around the country are taking
the same step to receive Christ. If you did receive Christ today, sign and date
your commitment below. Let this page always serve as a reminder of what God
did in your life today. Take a risk and share your decision with someone before
you leave. They will celebrate your commitment with you.

□ Today I am committing my life to Christ for the first time.

__________________________(Signature) ________________(Date)

2. In Ecclesiastes 1, Pastor Rick identified three consequences of not knowing your

purpose:

• Life will seem tiresome

• Life will seem unfulfilling
• Life will seem uncontrollable

With which of these three do you most identify? Why?

3. Paul had a clear understanding of God's purpose for his life. He said, "I am
focusing all my energies on this one thing." How would knowing God's purposes
help you focus your life? How would knowing your life purpose simplify your
life?

4. *Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that God "has set eternity in the hearts of men." What
do you think that verse means? What are some practical ways we can live life
here on earth in preparation for life in eternity?

Depending on the size of your group, time availability, or stage of maturity,

additional questions are provided at the end of this lesson for your group to study.
You may want to use these questions as suggested homework each week or turn
there right now for extended discussion.

SERVE ................................................................15 Minutes
The Purpose Driven Life is not to be lived alone. There is no such thing as a lone
ranger Christian. This section of the curriculum is designed to help you serve and
live out your faith in your group and church.

5. *Open to the Purpose Driven Group Agreement in the Small

Group Resources section of the study guide, page 41. Take a few minutes to
review these healthy group guidelines and decide together on each of the group
values and expectations as you begin. A little bit of time on this today could
save you from unmet expectations over the next several weeks.

6. A central component of this particular small group series is the daily reading of Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

The Purpose Driven Life. In order for us to remain faithful, sometimes we need
a little encouragement and friendly accountability. Take a moment to pair up
with someone in your group to be your reading partner. We recommend that
men partner with men and women with women. Check in with each other
through the week or at the group meeting to see what each of you is learning,
and encourage each other in your progress through the book.

SHARE................................................................10 Minutes
7. God uses other people in specific ways in each of our lives. In
whose life does God want to use you? Now is a great time to
consider who you might invite to next week's study. What co-
worker, neighbor, friend, or family member do you know who
would enjoy this study? Take a moment and ask God to give you
a name or two.

8. Now take a couple of minutes and fill out this next section as a way to identify Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

people you could invite next week.

Make a plan to invite them. Remember to pray as a group for these people in the
prayer time at the close of the meeting.

WORSHIP ...........................................................20 Minutes

9. *If someone in your group received Christ today, spend time Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

celebrating that decision by thanking God and praying for them as

they begin their spiritual journey.

To maximize prayer time and allow greater opportunity for personal sharing, break into subgroups
of 3-4 people. This is especially important if your group is more than eight people.

10. As you spend time together in prayer, if you have never prayed out loud in a Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

group you might simply say a single sentence prayer. Try praying something
like, "Thank you, God, for creating me for a purpose." That's all you need to say.

11. Close by thanking God for what He revealed to you today and praying for any Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

needs expressed during the session. Remember to pray for the people you
want to invite to the next group meeting.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

12. Take a few minutes to look at the Small Group Calendar in the Small Group Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

Resources section, page 44. Healthy groups share responsibilities and group
ownership. Fill out the calendar together, at least for next week, noting where
you will meet each week, who will facilitate, and who will provide a meal or
snack. Note special events, socials, or days off as well. Your Group Leader will
be very appreciative and everyone will have a lot more fun together. This would
be a great role for someone to coordinate for the group.

13. Also, start collecting basic contact information like phone numbers and email Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

addresses. The Group Roster on the inside cover of your study guide is a good
place to keep this information. Pass one or all the study guides in a circle to
ensure everyone gets the information first hand.

ADDITIONAL STUDY

In our study this week we have looked at the lives of two prominent people: King Solomon, the
wisest man who ever lived; and Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ who wrote much of the New
Testament. Solomon learned firsthand that all we experience in life is meaningless when we live
without an eternal perspective. On the other hand, Paul was clearly focused on eternity from the
moment of his calling. Let us consider some of the final words of these two great men of the Bible.

14. Read Ecclesiastes 9:1-6 and 12:13,14. What conclusion did Solomon reach Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

at the end of his life?

15. As Paul neared the end of his life, what was his charge to Timothy which Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

reflected what he had learned from his life in 2 Timothy 4:1-5?

Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

SG_Curriculum_Video.doc
9
16. *According to 2 Timothy 4:6-8, what was Paul's conclusion about his life as
he looked back and then forward to his future?

17. What do you learn from Solomon and Paul that could help you in your life? Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

PREPARATION FOR NEXT TIME

18. *In order to get the most from this study, we strongly recommend that you Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

read a chapter a day from, The Purpose Driven Life (Days 1-7). You may want
to write your responses and reflections or requests to God in a journal.

19. Be sure to call one of the friends you prayed for in the group this week. Offer
to pick him or her up and be sure to get each a study guide before the meeting.

20. Work on this week's memory verse and be prepared to share it with someone
at the next meeting. The memory verses are also included on page 53 in the
Small Group Resources section. All of our memory verses are from the New
International Version. A simple way to do this is to hand-write the verse 5-8
times on a piece of paper. This simple practice will help grow your confidence in
God.

WEEK 2 – Worship: You Were Planned For God’s Pleasure

"God did not need to create you, but He chose to create you
for His own enjoyment. You exist for His benefit, His glory,
His purpose, and His delight."
Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life

Instructions – If your group is unable to work through all the curriculum, we have recommended a
question or activity with an asterisk (*) in each section of the study.

CONNECT...........................................................15 Minutes
21. Welcome any newcomers to the group and briefly introduce
yourselves.

22. *When you were growing up, what was your picture of God?

23. Most people want to live a healthy, balanced life. A regular medical check-up
is a good way to measure health and spot potential problems. In the same way,
a spiritual check-up is vital to your spiritual well-being. The Purpose Driven
Health Assessment was designed to give you a quick snapshot or pulse of your
spiritual health. Take 3-4 minutes alone to complete the Purpose Driven Health
Assessment, found on page 45 in the Small Group Resources section. After
answering each question, tally your results. Then, pair up with another person
(preferably your reading partner), and briefly share one purpose that is going
well and one that needs a little work.

WORSHIP—YOU WERE PLANNED FOR GOD'S PLEASURE

I. How Do We Live a Life of Worship, a Life Pleasing to God?

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living
sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual worship. Do not conform any longer
to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be
able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans
12:1,2 (NIV)

1. You must ________________________________ yourself to God. (v. 1)

• Worship is ______________________________

• Worship is ____________________________

"Haven't you yet learned that your body is the home of the Holy Spirit God gave you,
and that he lives within you? Your own body does not belong to you. For God has
bought you with a great price. So use every part of your body to give glory back to God
because he owns it." 1 Corinthians 6:19,20 (LB)

• Worship is ________________________

2. You must learn the principle of ___________________________. (v. 2)

SG_Curriculum_Video.doc

3. You must learn the principle of ___________________________. (v. 2b)

"I always keep the Lord in front of me. When he is by my side, I cannot be moved. That is
why my heart is glad and my soul rejoices. My body rests securely." Psalm 16:8,9 (GW)

II. Three Reasons Why We Should Live For God's Pleasure

1. Living a life of worship is _______________________________________.

2. Living a life of worship is ___________________________.

3. Living a life of worship is __________________________.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

If your group has eight or more people you may want to break into circles of 3-4 people for greater
participation and deeper discussion. Then, come back together at the end of the discussion time
and have someone report from each group the highlights of their discussion.

24. You have just heard that the life lived for God's pleasure is the good life.
Why is that such a radical statement in light of our culture?

25. When you hear the word "worship," what is the first thing that comes to mind? Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

Have someone read aloud Romans 12:1. How does this verse define worship?

26. *The Bible says God created you so He could love you, enjoy you, and adopt Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

you into His family. Stop and ponder that statement for a moment. How does
that make you feel and is it consistent with your view of God?

SG_Curriculum_Video.doc
13
27. According to Matthew 22:37, what is God's greatest priority for your life? Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

How does this compare to what you see in your own life?

Depending on the size of your group, time availability, or stage of maturity,

additional questions are provided at the end of this lesson for your group to study.
You may want to use these questions as suggested homework each week or turn
there right now for extended discussion.

SERVE/SHARE...................................................10 Minutes
28. *In Matthew 22:37-39 Jesus said the two greatest commands
are to love God and love our neighbor. How does living a life of
worship (loving God) help you love the people around you?

WORSHIP ...........................................................15 Minutes

This week we have learned about dedicating our lives completely to God and how
to live as a living sacrifice. This is the greatest expression of worship that exists.
In preparation for the prayer time this week, discuss the following questions:

1. Romans 12:2 says we should not conform to the values of the

world in which we live. What are some of the subtle ways in which you are
vulnerable to accepting the values of the world's culture?

SG_Curriculum_Video.doc
14
2. What barriers keep you from dedicating your whole life to God?

3. *As you begin your time of prayer, thank God that He has made you for His
pleasure. Express, in short one-sentence prayers, your thankfulness that He
has given you a good, enjoyable life custom made for you. Ask God to show
you areas you need to surrender to Him. Pray for everyone in the group to live a
life totally dedicated to God. Be sure to write the requests on the prayer and
praise sheets.

ADDITIONAL STUDY

29. *Review Romans 12:1-2. What do you think it means to offer your body as a Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

living sacrifice? What would our lives look like if we truly lived this way?

30. From the end of Romans 12:2, what are the benefits of offering our body as a Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

living sacrifice and following the direction Paul has given us in verses 1 and 2?

31. How do you understand living the life described by Paul to be a Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

demonstration of worship for God?

32. Read Psalm 16:8-9. What are some practical ways this week that you can Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

always keep the Lord in front of you?

SG_Curriculum_Video.doc
15
PREPARATION FOR NEXT TIME

33. *Continue to read a chapter a day from The Purpose Driven Life (Days 8-14).
If you get behind, don't be discouraged; just keep moving through the days,
asking God to show you what He desires for you to see each day. We
recommend writing down your thoughts and direction from the Lord as you go.
Commit to answering the question, taking the step, or praying the prayer at the
end of each chapter. Let this time become a meaningful time of reflection when
God can speak His purposes and thoughts into your life.

34. Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 and Ephesians 4:11-16. What do we learn from Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

these passages about how the body of Christ is to function?

35. Continue to pray for your friends you wanted to invite the first week. Be sure
to call and invite them again. You never know: this may be the most important
call they get all year

36. Pray for the group member needs you wrote down on the prayer and praise
list.

FELLOWSHIP—YOU WERE FORMED FOR GOD'S FAMILY

"…I am writing these things to you…[so] you will know how to live in the family of God. That
family is the church of the living God…." 1 Timothy 3:14,15 (NCV)

I. Five Building Blocks for Fellowship

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to
one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be
lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in
hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are
in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do
not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live
in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with
people of low position. Do not be conceited." Romans 12:9-16 (NIV)

1. The first building block for fellowship is _____________________. (v. 9)

out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble." Can
you share a time in your life when other believers came to your assistance,
brought you comfort, or met a need?

41. *In this session you learned about five building blocks for true fellowship. Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

Which of these is a strength of your group or your church? Which one do you
personally find most challenging?

42. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Hebrews 3:13, and Hebrews 10:25. From these Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

verses, what are some of the practical benefits of encouragement? Who has
served as a source of encouragement in your life?

group.

Call or meet this week with your spiritual partner to pray for each other and
encourage one another in your spiritual growth. You could meet a few minutes
before or after a church service or take a few minutes of group time to check in
with your spiritual partner.

44. As a way to affirm and encourage, take a few minutes to do the "hot seat" Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

exercise. Select an individual in your group and write his or her name at the top
of a piece of paper. Then pass it around the room and have each group
member write, "This is what I've learned to appreciate about you," or, "This is
what I've learned to value in you," followed by something specifically appreciated

passed all the way around, have one group member read it aloud to the
individual.

45. Plan a time in the next 3-4 weeks for your group to hang out together. Get Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

out your calendars and pick the date. This could be a party, picnic, movie night
at someone's house, or something as simple as having a meal together before

From Philippians 1:12,13, you discover that it is your responsibility to develop the salvation you
have in Christ. With this in mind, we will consider more closely the tools God uses and the choices
we make that will help us become more like Jesus.

58. Some people have thought that Paul's reference to working out our salvation
means that we have to earn our salvation. What does Ephesians 2:8-9 have to
say about this?

59. Pastor Rick compared "working out" your salvation to a physical workout. Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

Your workout is to develop what you already possess. In what ways is

MINISTRY—YOU WERE SHAPED FOR SERVING GOD

"In reply Jesus said: 'A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands
of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A
priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the
other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on
him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on
his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins
and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you
for any extra expense you may have.' 'Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man
who fell into the hands of robbers?' The expert in the law replied, 'The one who had mercy on him.'
Jesus told him, 'Go and do likewise.'" Luke 10:30-37 (NIV)

EVANGELISM—YOU WERE MADE FOR A MISSION

"In the same way that you gave Me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world."
John 17:18 (Msg)

"One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and religion teachers were sitting around. They had come
from nearly every village in Galilee and Judea, even as far away as Jerusalem, to be there. The
healing power of God was on him. Some men arrived carrying a paraplegic on a stretcher. They
were looking for a way to get into the house and set him before Jesus. When they couldn't find a
way in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof, removed some tiles, and let him down in the
middle of everyone, right in front of Jesus. Impressed by their bold belief, he said, 'Friend, I forgive
your sins.' That set the religion scholars and Pharisees buzzing. 'Who does he think he is? That's
blasphemous talk. God and only God can forgive sins.' Jesus knew exactly what they were thinking
and said, 'Why all this gossipy whispering? Which is simpler: to say 'I forgive your sins,' or to say
'Get up and start walking'? Well, just so it's clear that I'm the Son of Man and authorized to do
either, or both....' He now spoke directly to the paraplegic: 'Get up. Take your bedroll and go
home.' Without a moment's hesitation, he did it—got up, took his blanket, and left for home, giving
glory to God all the way. The people rubbed their eyes, incredulous—and then also gave glory to
God. Awestruck, they said, 'We've never seen anything like that!'" Luke 5:17-26 (Msg)

other friend to join. The best time to have people join the group is in the first or second week of a
new study. Take some time at your first meeting to share names of friends with group members so
that as a group you can pray that they might be open to attend.

How long will this group meet?

This series is six weeks long, and we are encouraging groups to add one additional week for a
celebration. At the end of this study, each group member may decide if he or she desires to
continue on for another six-week study. In your final session, week six, take time to discuss your
Group Agreement, and what study you might do next.

Who is the leader?

Most groups have a leader. If you do not have a leader, take a few minutes to talk about who will
be the leader in your group. We encourage you to select one or more discussion leaders. We
recommend that you rotate the job of facilitating your discussions, creating opportunities for
everyone's gifts to develop. Several other responsibilities can be rotated, including refreshments,
prayer requests, worship, or keeping up with those who miss a meeting. Shared ownership in the
group helps everybody grow.

Where do we find new group members for our group?

This can be an issue for groups, especially new groups starting with just a few people, or existing
groups that lose a few people along the way. We encourage you to brainstorm a list of people from
your work, church, neighborhood, children's school, family, the gym, and so on. Then pray for the
people on each member's list. Have each group member invite several people on their list. No
matter how you find members, it is important to continue actively looking for new people to join
your group. All groups go through some healthy attrition as a result of moves, releasing new
leaders, ministry opportunities, and so forth. If the group gets too small, it runs the risk of shutting
down. Remember, the next person you add just might become a friend for eternity. You never
know.

How do we handle the childcare needs in our group?

Very carefully. This is a sensitive issue in groups. We suggest that you seek creative solutions as a
group. One common solution is to meet in the living room with the adults and share the cost of a
babysitter (or two) who can be with the kids in another part of the house. Another popular option is
to have one home for the kids and a second home (close by) for the adults. If desired, the adults
could rotate the responsibility of providing a lesson for the kids. This last option is great with
school age kids and can be a huge blessing to families.

What if we cannot get through all the content each week?
The curriculum is provided to serve you as a group and as a leader. Do not feel obligated to get
through all the content in this study guide. Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit during your
group meeting. Some items will be more applicable for your group than others. Choose those items
that best fit your group life. However, if an item stretches you as a group, do not ignore it. New
experiences will breathe new growth and community into your small group.

Many groups are able to complete these study guides in the suggested six weeks, while others take
several extra weeks. Please feel free to adjust your pace according to the needs of your group. If
the need arises to take a week and give attention to needs in your group, do so. Then come back to
the study guide the next week. We encourage you to periodically meet together specifically for the
purpose of building relationships within your group.

SMALL GROUP CALENDAR

Healthy groups share responsibilities and group ownership. It might take some time for this to
develop. Shared ownership ensures no one person has responsibility for the group. Use the
calendar to keep track of social events, mission projects, birthdays, or days off. Complete this
calendar at your first or second meeting. Planning ahead will increase attendance and shared
ownership.

curriculum, we have recommended a question or activity with an asterisk (*) in each section of the
study.

Rotating Leadership. Each lesson provides several opportunities to rotate facilitation of different
sections. This is a great way to get everybody involved. Do this as often as is comfortable.

Leader Tips
(Provided on the curriculum videotape is a video leadership lifter that provides insights and
coaching for leading each week. These notes are some additional leadership tips that will assist you
in leading.)

Session 1

1. Be friendly and be yourself! Be sure to greet people at the door with a big smile...this can
set the mood of the first meeting. Remember, THEY are taking as big a step as you are to
show up at your house! In this first session, be sure to take the time to have everyone briefly
introduce themselves and make a special effort to make new folks feel welcomed and
wanted without feeling smothered.

2. Each week you will find a memory verse in the Grow section of the study guide. It is easy
to ignore the memory verses and move on to the discussion questions. The Bible is clear
that there is tremendous value in putting God's word in our heart. The point is not just to be
able to say the verse but to let it's meaning be drilled deep into our hearts. This is a habit
that is difficult for most Christians, so they will likely need some help and encouragement.
One of the best ways to do this is to model it as a leader. If you will memorize the verse
each week and make learning and reviewing the verses a fun part of the meeting, people will
join in. Practice saying the verse out loud together. These verses are also at the back of
your guide in a format that you can cut apart and carry with you throughout the week.

During the Worship section of this week's study guide is an introduction to sub-grouping. In order
for people to have more time to share their requests and to feel more comfortable in praying, sub-
grouping is a great option. When you come to the prayer time, simply break up into smaller circles
of 3-4 people and appoint someone to lead the smaller circle.

Small Group Leadership 101 (Top Ten Ideas for New Facilitators)

Congratulations. You have responded to the call to help shepherd Jesus' flock. Few other tasks in
the family of God surpass the contribution you will be making. As you prepare to lead, whether it is
one session or the entire series, here are a few thoughts to keep in mind. We encourage you to read
these and review them with each new discussion leader before he or she leads.

108. Remember you are not alone. God knows everything about you, and He Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

knew you would be asked to lead your group. Even though you may not feel
ready to lead, this is common for all good leaders. God promises, "I will never
leave you; I will never abandon you" (Hebrews 13:5 TEV). Whether you are
leading for one evening, several weeks, or a lifetime, you will be blessed as you
serve.

109. Don't try to do it alone. Pray right now for God to help you build a healthy
leadership team. If you can enlist a co-leader to help you lead the group, you
will find your experience much richer. This is your chance to involve as many
people as you can in building a healthy group. All you have to do is ask people
to help and you'll be surprised at the response.

110. Just be yourself. God wants to use your unique gifts and temperament.
Don't try to do things exactly like another leader; do them in a way that fits you.
Admit when you don't have an answer and apologize when you make a
mistake. Your group will love you for it and you'll sleep better at night.

111. Prepare for your meeting ahead of time. Review the session and the Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

leader's notes, and write down your responses to each question. Pay special
attention to exercises that ask group members to do something other than
engage in discussion. These exercises will help your group live what the Bible
teaches, not just talk about it. Be sure you understand how an exercise works.
If the exercise employs one of the items in the Small Group Resource section
(such as the Purpose Driven Health Assessment), be sure to look over that
item so you'll know how it works.

112. Pray for your group members by name. Before you begin your session, Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

take a few moments and pray for each member by name. You may want to
review the prayer list at least once a week. Ask God to use your time together
to touch the heart of every person uniquely. Expect God to lead you to
whomever He wants you to encourage or challenge in a special way. If you
listen, God will surely lead.

113. When you ask a question, be patient. Someone will eventually respond. Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

Sometimes people need a moment or two of silence to think about the

question. If silence doesn't bother you, it won't bother anyone else. After
someone responds, affirm the response with a simple "thanks" or "great
answer." Then ask, "How about somebody else?" or "Would someone who
SG_Curriculum_Video.doc
51
hasn't shared like to add anything?" Be sensitive to new people or reluctant
members who aren't ready to say, pray, or do anything. If you give them a
safe setting, they will blossom over time.

114. Provide transitions between questions. Ask if anyone would like to read the Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

paragraph or Bible passage. Don't call on anyone, but ask for a volunteer, and
then be patient until someone begins. Be sure to thank the person who reads
aloud.

115. Break into small groups occasionally. The Grow and Worship sections Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

provide good opportunities to break into smaller circles. With a greater

opportunity to talk in a small circle, people will connect more with the study,
apply more quickly what they're learning, and ultimately get more out of it. A
small circle also encourages a quiet person to participate and tends to
minimize the effects of a more vocal or dominant member. Small circles are
also helpful during prayer time. People who are unaccustomed to praying
aloud will feel more comfortable trying it with just two or three others. Also,
prayer requests won't take as much time, so circles will have more time to
actually pray. When you gather back with the whole group, you can have one
person from each circle briefly update everyone on the prayer requests.
People are more willing to pray in small circles if they know the whole group
will hear all the prayer requests.

116. Rotate facilitators occasionally. You may be perfectly capable of leading Formatted: Bullets and Numbering

each time, but you will help others grow in their faith and gifts if you give them
opportunities to lead. You can use the Group Calendar on page ___ to fill in
the names of all six meeting leaders at once if you prefer.

117. One final challenge (for new or first-time leaders): Before your first
opportunity to lead, look up each of the five passages listed below. Read each
one as a devotional exercise to help prepare you with a shepherd's heart.
Trust us on this one. If you do this, you will be more than ready for your first
meeting.

• Matthew 9: 35-38
• 1 Peter 5:2-4
• Philippians 2:1-5
• Hebrews 10:23-25
• 1 Thessalonians 2:7,8, 11–12

one that has been difficult in the past. We encourage you to stretch yourself and try to memorize
these six memory verses. If possible, memorize these as a group and make them part of your group
time.
