GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Carnegie Units- To earn a diploma from Lincoln County School District Number Two, a
student must earn Carnegie Unit credits in the following curricular areas as required by the
State of Wyoming. A student’s final score for a course must be at least 60% if Carnegie Unit
credits are to be awarded.

Body of Evidence Body of Evidence - In addition to earning Carnegie Credits as described

above, a student must show evidence of proficient performance, at a minimum, on Wyoming’s
uniform student Content and Performance Standards for the common core of knowledge and
skills. Evidence of proficient performance is gained through performance on course work,
course-based assessments, and common assessments adopted under the district’s Body of
Evidence system. The total points earned for each class will be entered into a graduation point
savings account at the conclusion of each semester class. A student must have a 70% average
in English (560 Points) and Math (420 Points) to meet body of evidence requirements.

Endorsements-Students in Lincoln County School District Number Two have the opportunity to meet three
levels of graduation transcript endorsement or to earn a certificate of completion as described below:
• Advanced transcript endorsement for a diploma requires a student to achieve an advanced

performance level in five of the nine content areas defined by the State of Wyoming, including three
of the following: language arts, math, science, social studies, and two other areas of the student’s
choosing. The student must achieve at least a proficient performance level on the standards in each of
the remaining four areas.
• Comprehensive transcript endorsement for a diploma requires a student to achieve a proficient

performance level on the standards within each of the nine content areas defined by the State of
Wyoming.
• General transcript endorsement for a diploma requires a student to achieve proficient performance
on the standards within five of the nine content areas defined by the State of Wyoming, including
language arts.
• A certificate of completion may be awarded to a student who does not meet the criteria for the
endorsements described above but who has maintained an attendance rate of at least 75% throughout
his/her four or more years in high school.
Guidance and Counseling Information

The counseling department provides students an opportunity for educational, vocational and personal
counseling. Students and parents are encouraged to visit the counselors often and take full advantage of the
various services offered.
The counseling office is open during the school year from 8:00 – 4:00. To make an appointment, call us at
307-885-4020. Students are assigned to a counselor and under normal circumstances that is the counselor with
whom the appointment should be made.
Hathaway Scholarship
The state of Wyoming has established a generous scholarship program in the name of former Wyoming
Governor Stan Hathaway that gives eligible Wyoming students scholarship money to attend the University of
Wyoming or a Wyoming community college. Students are strongly encouraged to take coursework that will
best prepare them to be awarded the maximum amount of money available.

Release of Records
In accordance with the Federal Privacy Rights of Parents and Student Act, signed consent forms are necessary
in order to release academic and other pertinent educational information to any individual or agency. Releases
are available in the Counseling Office. Once this Release of Records is on file in the counseling office, copies
of transcripts can be obtained by calling the registrar, or by sending a written request to:

Information for New Students At SVHS

Parents or guardians of students new to the Lincoln County #2 public school system and students reentering
school after a period of non-attendance of ten (10) or more days in a Lincoln County #2 public school need to
contact the counseling office (307-885-4020) to make an appointment to register their child for classes at
SVHS. Parents or guardians are required to accompany their students to the initial counseling appointment
and must provide the counseling office with the following documentation.
• Proof of the immunizations according to Wyoming Statute 21-4-309:
• Proof of residency: Students under the age of 18 must have one legal parent or legal guardian residing
in Wyoming.
• Students living with another relative, friend, friend of the family, or on their own must present a court
issued Legal Guardianship Order or Emancipation Order (Wyoming Statute 14-1-201 through 14-1-
206).
• School personnel must verify proof of legal parent/guardianship and of residency in Wyoming that
demonstrates a physical address (i.e. electric and cable bills).
• Students will not be allowed to start classes without an unofficial photocopy of their transcript of all
credits attempted and earned through their current grade level and it is also requested that they have a
copy of their last report card as well as their check-out sheet with transfer grades from the last school
they attended.
• The counseling staff will evaluate transcripts. Since all schools do not have the same credit or course
offerings, students transferring into SVHS may be required to take skills tests to assure proper
placement in SVHS courses.
• To help keep students on track for graduation, counselors will also check to see which Carnegie Units
and Wyoming Department of Education Standards have been met.
• Students may also be asked to provide course syllabi to better match their former school’s courses to
SVHS courses for purposes of granting credit.
• Credits from home-school programs or other non-accredited schools are not accepted towards
graduation at SVHS.
• The principal reserves the right to approve transferred credits and class placement.
Grading and Issuance of Credit

For all courses taken at SVHS a transcript grade and credit will be issued at the end of each semester.
Standard grading system
All SVHS courses use the following standard grading scale:
90% - 100% = A 80% - 89% = B 70% - 79% = C 60% - 69% = D below 60% = F
Grade Point Average (GPA) is determined based on a 4.0 scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0).

Failed or Unsatisfactory Coursework

If a student fails a core course, it is strongly recommended that they retake the course so that the course of
study continues to comply with graduation standards. If a student chooses to repeat a course, both grades will
appear on the transcript and be computed in the GPA. If a student fails a core course with a grade higher than
fifty percent, credit recovery is possible through a contact with the teacher. Please see our counselors for
information.
Schedule Changes
Schedule changes will be made a week before the semester begins for the following reasons:
• Wrong placement
• Student has not taken prerequisite.
• Student does not meet requirements to be in class

Math Requirement
Students must pass Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II with a 70% in order to move into the
next sequenced course. If the student has a 70% average in three math classes (3 Credits) their final
Junior/Senior math class does not have to be a 70%. Credit recovery for math is available after school and
during summer school.
Late Arrival/Early Dismissal

Students at SVHS are expected to enroll in ten classes each semester. Seniors have the option to arrive at
school at the beginning of period two OR may be dismissed at the end of period four if they are making
satisfactory progress toward graduation and if they were proficient in every subject on the Wyoming PAWS
test. Students who exercise this option to miss one period cannot be in the building during this time.
Early Graduation
The State Board of Education requires eight semesters of high school attendance beginning with ninth grade
to receive a high school diploma. However, students who have completed graduation standards and required
credits for graduation may be eligible to graduate early with the approval of the Lincoln County #2 Board of
Education. Please meet with the senior counselor, by May 15th of a student’s junior year and complete an
Early Graduation Request. This will be reviewed by the administration.
Definition of Terms
• Credit: Courses which meet every other day for one period will receive one half credit per semester.
Any courses receiving "pass/fail" grades are not counted in the GPA.
• Prerequisite: A course that must be completed before another is taken. For example, one must
complete Algebra I before taking Algebra II.
• Elective: Courses that are not "required" are electives. All students will have the opportunity to take
elective courses.

• Grade Point Average (GPA): The GPA is an arithmetic average obtained by dividing the sum of the
numerical values of the letter grades earned by the number of courses taken.
• Cumulative Grade Point Average: Students applying to colleges before they graduate will have
semester grades 9-11 averaged together to make the Cumulative GPA. The 7th semester will be
figured and sent to a college requesting it. Any transcript sent out after a student graduates will
include the Cumulative GPA plus class rank.
• Class Rank for Scholarship: the cumulative GPA determines Class rank for scholarship purposes.
Selection of Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Honor Students

Is determined by the following formula:
• Grades of the 22 semesters of ranked courses are multiplied by their ranks and summed. The sum is
added to the result of the GPA * 25.
• All courses are ranked according to difficulty i.e.: basic courses = 1, Intermediate = 2, and Difficult =
3.
• Must have been a full time student at Star Valley High School for at least two semesters prior to
selection. Selection cut off date for grades is two weeks prior to graduation.
• Exchange and early graduation students will not be eligible.
• Only grades transferred from a regionally accredited high school will be considered and will be
computed on the scale of Star Valley High School.
• If a tie exists the students will share the honor.
• Courses and weights to be used in determining these honors will be published by the high school in the
Enrollment Guide Index.
Principal's Honor Roll: In order for a student to make the "Principal's Honor Roll", the student must obtain
a 3.90 GPA during the grading period. A student must be enrolled in 6 graded classes.
Honor Roll: In order for a student to make the "Honor Roll", the student must obtain a 3.50 GPA during the
grading period. A student must be enrolled in 6 graded classes.
Eligibility For Extra Curricular Activities
Any student who participates in a WHSAA sanctioned activity must meet the eligibility rules established by
the WHSAA as published in the official handbook for the year of participation.
In addition to the eligibility rules, any student at Star Valley High School who participates in WHSAA extra-
curricular activities must:
(1) Maintain a passing grade in all classes for the time period in which a student participates in an activity.
(2) Demonstrate good citizenship in classes and school by following the Student Training Code, which the
student and the student's parents have signed.
(3) Students and parents must sign the WHSAA Eligibility pamphlet which will be kept on file at the school.
Weekly grade reports will be run on each student participating in activities. Students failing to meet the
eligibility criteria will not be allowed to participate. See and read the Training Code for details.
It is the student's responsibility to keep up on schoolwork and constantly check that work is done and
assignments turned in. Teachers and coaches should communicate frequently and maintain open
communications concerning student problems.

Activity sponsors/coaches are responsible for making a list of activity participants available to all teachers at
least one week prior to the first scheduled activity.

NCAA for Student’s Who Plan on Participating in College Activities/Sports
National Clearinghouse Eligibility Center (NCAA) requires a student to register before High School

COLLEGE CREDIT
SVHS students are given the opportunity to earn college credit while still in High School.
The colleges SVHS has agreements with are Western Wyoming Community College, Utah State
University, and the University of Wyoming. It is the student’s responsibility to register for the
college credit.
Note: Colleges have varying policies on the acceptance of college credit that is earned while
the student is still in high school. Students are responsible for confirming transferability with
the institution they are planning to attend.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ART
ART I
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11,12 (Semester or Year)
(Purchase of supplies required plus a $10.00 Art Fee)
A basic art education class, either semester or year long.
An introduction to drawing where drawing from life as well as creative and abstract drawings are studied in
depth.
Elements and principles of art are studied through drawings done in a variety of media including pencil, ink, and
scratchboard. Elements and principles of art are studied through famous artists from Art History.
ART II COLOR (Semester)

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Art I
($20.00 Art fee, semester course)
An introduction to color theory and color use through painting in pastels, color pencil, logo design, and watercolor,
painting techniques and advanced composition practices.
Art History using artists from history to learn color and color theory.
ART II-CERAMICS (Semester)

(Purchase of supplies required) semester course.
Student does not have to take Art I or Art II Color before this class
Basic hand building and wheel thrown pottery techniques.
Projects increase in difficulty each quarter.
Basic firing and glazing techniques, including the history of ceramics.
ART III & IV (Semester or Year)

Grade Level: 11,12
Prerequisite: Art I & II Color
(Purchase of supplies required. Must have a B or higher to get into and stay in Advanced Art. )

An advanced art course, intended for art careers and/or special interest in art. Both sections are together.
Lessons rotate in 2-year blocks. Equivalent to an Advanced Placement studio art class. The student chooses the
medium or mediums desired and works under the direct supervision of the teacher to work on advanced pieces to
build college portfolios.
DESIGN AND PRODUCTION I (Semester)

Grade Level: 10,11,12
A semester class for students looking to further their art experience. Students will use computers and learn to use
the three main programs to include Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and In-design. Other graphic design
programs will be taught, learned and used.
DESIGN AND PRODUCTION II (Semester)

A semester class for students looking to further their design and production skills. Students will use computers to
design and mass produce such things as business cards, envelopes, posters, programs, and fine art prints, etc.
using the three main programs mentioned in Design and Production I.
PHOTOGRAPHY I (Semester)
Grade Level: 11, 12
An introduction to digital still photography with emphasis on composition, quality, and themes. The class also
works with computer programs such as Photoshop, iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, and iDVD.
PHOTOGRAPHY II Grade Level: 12 (Semester)

Prerequisite: Photography I
Continued use of digital photography, and advanced use of still photography with computer programs.

BUSINESS
ACCOUNTING I (Semester)
Prerequisite: none
Students will learn:
• basic double entry accounting principles for personal use.
• the use of basic business forms, journals and ledgers.
• banking procedures i.e… check writing, deposits, and statement reconciliation.
• accounting procedures for a sole proprietor, partnership, and corporation.
• accounting using computer software such as Excel and Quickbooks
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT 5th Hour Class (Semester)

Grade level: 11,12
Teacher Approval Required
Several students each semester will be selected to be managers of the student store. The student managers
alternate every other day running the school store during lunch. During this 45 minute class period, students will
do a variety of tasks including: Prepare the cash box, Make bank deposits, Organize the school store for opening,
Help make decisions on products sold and Create marketing ideas. See Mr. Simpson if you wish to be a student
manager.
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS BEGINNING (Semester)

Grade Level: 9, 10,11,12
Offered for any student who has not completed a keyboarding class, watches hands, and/or does not meet a
minimum proficiency level. This class will be devoted to learning how to keyboard using the touch method.
Intensive practice using controlled drills will help develop maximum skill in minimum time. Basic document
formats will be learned including centered-line documents such as announcements and menus, memos, letters in
block format, simple tables, and reports. Most students take this as a freshman.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS INTERMEDIATE (Semester)

Required Class
Prerequisite: 8th grade keyboarding or similar beginning course.
This intermediate level course will provide the student with exposure to Microsoft Office software. Students will
become accomplished in MS WORD. Emphasis will be on formatting concepts and improving speed, accuracy,
editing skills, and increasing document production speed. This will include memos, letters, outlines, reports,
agendas, resume’s, and basic desktop publishing skills. Students will also use the Internet as a research tool to
accomplish realistic tasks such as post high school and career research. Students will also briefly explore other
components of MS Office by using EXCEL and POWERPOINT. Most students take this as a Freshman.
COMPUTERS INFORMATION SYSTEM (Semester)

Grade Level: 11,12
Prerequisite: 1 semester or more of Keyboarding.
Lab Fee: $10 for the Textbook
3 Concurrent College Credits
Microsoft EXCEL Spreadsheets: students will learn to create pie & bar charts, financial figuring for personal &
business settings, college expense planning.
Microsoft POWERPOINT: students will create slide presentations using the computer and LCD projector and give
presentations to a group. Students will use the Internet to enhance information and pictures in their
presentations. Students will create a Jeopardy game and many other powerpoint applications.
Microsoft WORD: Students will learn ways to format resume’s, research reports, tables, mailing labels, letters,
desktop publishing, and a variety of templates already installed in the software.
DESKTOP PUBLISHING (Semester)

Grade Level: 11, 12
Prerequisite: 1 semester or more of Keyboarding//Computer Application
This class offers One (1) Western Wyoming Community College credits for grades 11 & 12.
This course provides skill development in the electronic procedures of producing professional publications. Using
Microsoft Publisher 2007 and other software, students will learn to create, format, illustrate, design, edit/revise,
and print publications. Examples of these publications include newsletters, flyers, brochures, reports, advertising
materials, and calendars. Students will also learn proper proofreading techniques, document compositor and
communication skills when promoting to the public.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP / STUDENT STORE (Semester)

Grade level: 11,12
Using the SVHS student store as a model, students will learn how to organize a business to make a profit.
Students will gain skills in retail & marketing, salesmanship, business accounting, sales tax, business
communications--both written and oral, developing their own business plan, computer applications, inventory
control and end-of-the term financial statements.
All students are required to work one day a week during lunch hour at the student store.
FINANCE & RECORDKEEPING (Semester)

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: none
This introduction to business class is for Freshmen through Seniors with no prerequisite. This course will cover
the basics of managing money and finance accounts. Students will learn to use a 10-key desk calculator, then
move on to personal, family, and business budgets. The class then explores credit and the use of credit cards &
loans in today’s economy along with cash receipts and the retail market. Students will learn about accounts
receivable. The semester ends with a basic unit on checkbooks and keeping a checking account, and a business
simulation combining all the skills learned over the semester.

A brief introduction to Microsoft Excel is included in this semester class.
INTERNET / WEB DESIGN (Semester)

Grade Level: 11,12
Prerequisite: 1 semester or more of Keyboarding / Computer Application
This class is an introduction to using the Internet and Web Page Design. It will cover Internet terminology and
concepts related to the World Wide Web, search engines, etc., that will aid students in research techniques.
Students will also learn to properly evaluate web sites by learning basic terminology and good design techniques.
They will then create their own web site with specified criteria including hyperlinks, graphics, etc. Students will
also keep up to date on current technology news relating to viruses, hardware/software, Internet tools, etc.
MARKETING (Semester)
Grade Level: 9, 10
Students will develop fundamental business skills, including; basic economics, career opportunities,
communication, human relations, cashier procedures, selling and marketing research. Classroom instruction will
be reinforced through the use of field trip experiences, guest lectures, case studies, and competitive events such as
the Wyoming Stock Market Game. Students will work in the computer lab where they will handle a virtual reality
football franchise and/or operate a convenience store.
MILLIONARE CLUB (Semester)

Grade Level: 11, 12
How will you manage your money after high school? So many decisions!! Whether you’re working full time or
going to college, you will find this course beneficial. Students will explore many web sites dealing with personal
finance. Activities will include: banking and credit, investment options (stocks, real estate, and mutual funds),
and personal law (landlord/tenant contracts), purchasing a car, employee benefits, credit cards and the IRS tax
forms. Several guest speakers and field trips are always included.
OFFICE PROCEDURES (Semester)

Grade Level: 11, 12
Prerequisite: 1 semester or more of Keyboarding / Computer Application
At the end of this class, students will be ready for entry-level jobs.
This course is designed for persons who might expect to be employed in an office environment. Units covered
include standard business correspondence formats and procedures such as filing, word processing, ten-key
calculators, desktop publishing, spelling/punctuation/grammar rules and Dictaphones. This course consists of a
lot of hands-on work at the individual student’s own pace.
WORK EXPERIENCE "SCHOOL TO WORK" (Semester or Year)

Grade Level: 12 (1st Hour Work Experience I or 4th hour Work Experience II)
Prerequisite: Senior standing and must have his/her own transportation. Must have completed and
passed some classes that will support the area of training in which the student would desire to
pursue. The student must submit an application obtained from the counseling office and be approved by the
School to Work Coordinator. Student will work on the job to learn a skill or work with a trainer to obtain a better
skill level and learn to work in a public setting. Student will look into careers by experiencing them first hand.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Prerequisite: Interest in children, families, and child development careers.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT II (Semester)

Prerequisite: Child Development
This class is designed for students interested in a career working with children. This class will prepare the student
for college classes dealing with early child development. The class will also help prepare the student for careers
such as Day Care Providers or Child Care. Also will help with the understanding of nurturing human
development to age two to six.
EXPERIENCES WITH CHILDREN (Semester)

Grade Level: 11, 12
This class is designed for students interested in children or any career involving children.
Understanding young children and their behavior. Building self esteem in the early years
Communication skills and cooperation with children. Effective discipline. Nurturing emotional, social, and
intellectual development to age five. Second term students will work with a cooperating teacher at a job site
gaining skills in planning, organizing and working with children.
FOODS (Semester)
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12
$10.00 lab fee required.
Foods class includes basic instruction in the following units as they relate to choices for a wellness lifestyle:
• Getting organized and started in the kitchen
• Measurements, equivalents, kitchen math, and budgeting
• Use of technology and equipment
• Cookies, cakes, candy, and pastry
• Grains, yeast, and quick breads

• Preparing simple meals featuring cuisine’s from America and around the world
Students will work independently and in groups, with a variety of hands on experiences.
CULINARY ARTS I (Semester)

Prerequisite: Teacher Permission/ Foods
Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the food service/culinary arts industry and
prepare them to enter jobs in food service. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice safety and
sanitation procedures, and use and maintain commercial food service equipment. Experience in hosting will also
be a major portion of the class and they will perform quantity food preparation as it relates to catering, bakery,
restaurant, and hospitality. We will have the opportunity to present hospitality rooms during sports invitational’s
throughout the year. Attendance at these events is mandatory.
CULINARY ARTS II & III (Semester)

Grade Level: 11,12
Prerequisite: Completion of Culinary I & II with a 2.5 gpa. Class limit 5
Students will continue to develop skills for the restaurant and hospitality industry and lodging fields. Students
will have the opportunity for a paid work experience, mentoring with chefs for the semester. Students will refine
their culinary skills in the areas of commercial baking including but not limited to yeast breads, cakes, pastries,
and pies. Students will develop menus and marketing and sales procedures for running their own restaurant.
Students will work independently and in small groups incorporating grades 11 & 12 according to the Wyoming
State Standards for the 11th grade. Competencies to be completed for certificates are: Hospitality rooms will be
required-common assessments
INTERIOR DESIGN (5th Hour Class) (Semester)

Grade 9,10,11,12
This class is designed for students interested in interior design for personal as well as commercial interiors. The
students will analyze the principles and elements of design. The student will evaluate the components of
customer service evaluating client needs, goals and resources in creating design plans. This will be a hands on
class learning basic interior design.
SEWING IN THE FAST LANE/CLOTHING I (Semester)

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Interest in sewing, clothing construction and commercial employment.
To learn more about the serger and projects using the serger.
To use creativity in planning and sewing projects.
Students will plan and construct individual projects.
Students are responsible for their own materials and supplies.
SEWING IN THE FAST LANE/CLOTHING II (Semester)

Prerequisite: Sewing in the Fast Lane I or with Teacher Permission
This class is designed for students interested in continuing with the skills learned in Sewing I. There will be an
emphasis on quilting. The student will design, construct, and display a quilt using individual choice of colors,
patterns, and methods. The student will use creativity in planning and completing their projects. The student
may also choose to construct individual projects of their own choice. Students are responsible for their own
materials and supplies.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (Semester)

Grade Level: 11,12
Prerequisite: 3.25 GPA

American sign Language (ASL) is a true language that is used with in the deaf community. This course will
introduce students to basic expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language (ASL), including

fiction engages elements of the world we know. We will be reading science fiction that is drawn primarily from the
post-1945. We will approach science fiction using two methods: First, we will examine how it defamiliarizes not
only history, but also an array of people, objects, social relations, and experiences, so that we can observe them

Chamber group performing at all orchestra festivals and trips as well as community performances. Chamber members well be
considered members of the concert orchestra. In lieu of being required to enroll in concert orchestra members will learn and perform
the concert orchestra music with the concert orchestra as well as their own music. Repertoire will include full group and small group
chamber music, all-state auction and state strings in-class preparation and standard repertoire for community events.
BLUEGRASS BAND (1ST Semester)

Prerequisite: Audition Required
String students must also participate in the Chamber Orchestra. Students will learn bluegrass, fiddle, and swing-
jazz techniques and skills to create and perform while collaborating with others in a small ensemble setting. This
is a performance-based course that will include 1-20 performances a year, a CD recording of the group, recruiting
in the younger schools, and participation in a three-day group tour. Out of class rehearsals are also a
requirement. This class is open to the entire student body and will include the following instruments: violin,
banjo, mandolin, guitar, vocals, bass, cello, and viola. This group meets before school one day a week during 2nd
semester.
GUITAR I (1st Semester)

This is a beginner course without a prerequisite. Students will learn techniques and skills to create and perform
while collaborating with others in an orchestral setting. They will connect music with history, cultures, and
society. This is not a performance-based course, but multiple in-class performances will be required. Guitar I will
have one-performance a semester. 2 1/2 hours of home practice a week is required.
