1. BACKGROUND
Globally, the Mineral sector is going through a technological revolution to cope with the
downstream innovations. The advancement in technology has resulted in excavation of
gargantuan volumes of natural resources from the mines. Mining industry is constantly
in search of higher levels of production with increased productivity and reduced cost.
Besides the economics of operating scale, the new dimensions of development focuses
on automation, cleaner mining systems, and increased utilization of assets by
increasing machine performance.
In the past several decades, the mining industry globally has shifted thrust from
underground to opencast mining. The use of large capacity Heavy Earth Moving
Machinery (HEMM), their extensive deployment and an ever-growing challenge to
increase productivity have led to increased complexity of operation and management.
In the early 1990s, South Eastern Coal fields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India,
reposed confidence in CMC for implementing a total IT solution for the Gevra Open
Cast Mine having a total material handling of more than 30 million tonne per year. In
those days, although the virtues of integration between different systems were known,
the concept of ERP in mines was not thought off. So, CMC designed an OLTP application
“The Integrated Mine Management System (IMMS)” covering almost all the functions.
SECL management decided to include an Operator Dependent Truck Dispatch System
(ODTDS) as main hub of IMMS. The project was successfully implemented in March

1993. Since then, it is operational at Gevra, helping the SECL management to have
better control over resources and is being maintained by CMC. This System caters to on-
line monitoring of field activities, adequate planning both on long-term and short-term
basis, timely management of inventory cost, availability of machines and their
utilisation; by generating, sharing and exchange of information among the different
modules.
CMC has also put in valuable efforts in the geological modelling and mine planning
area. A product called “CRYSTAL” was developed initially in 1989 that has been
implemented at various locations in India (like ACC, L&T, NMDC, SAIL, KIOCL, NCL and
INDAL) and abroad (Jordan-Rock Phosphate). This product is available now on
Windows.
The Equipment Status Monitoring System was developed and commissioned by CMC
for Neyveli Lignite Corporation in 1994. It monitors the operating status and certain
fault conditions of special mining equipment, like bucket-wheel-excavator, conveyor
and spreaders.
A Coal Allocation and Linkage System (Coals-Rail) has been developed for Coal India
Limited (CIL) on a turnkey basis in 1995. The system provides linkage between various
CIL collieries and helps in managing sales and dispatch operations.
In order to keep pace with the day-to-day advancement in IT sector, particularly for
application in Mineral Industry, CMC invested in establishing an Application Specific
Development Centre for Mining Industry at their Kolkata regional office in 1993. This
centre has sizeable pool of professionals from mining industry, computer science,
electronics and other engineering disciplines who are trained on various aspects of
application development and is backed up by CMC's R&D Center at Hyderabad. The
expertise available from other service practices like embedded systems, computer
hardware, communication, networking & project management is pooled from the
general resource for project implementation as and when required. The centre at
Kolkata has come out with specialized IT products and solutions for Mineral Industry to
excavate the hidden treasure. These products and solutions are being implemented at
several locations in India. DynaMine, a GPS based Operator Independent Truck
Dispatch System and Crystal, a mine-planning tool, are two of such products.

IMMS is an ERP based Integrated Mine Management System. It was first developed
as an OLTP application covering all functions of a large opencast operating mine in
Eastern India way back in early 1990s. CMC has used this knowledge base to
customise and implement RAMCO e Business Solutions in the form of IMMS. This
has been implemented at all the units of Northern Coalfields Limited and its head
quarters located at Singrauli, North-Central India. The number of concurrent users
is approximately 250. CMC is offering this solution to industry on UNIX/RISC servers
with Oracle and the product is Web enabled.
