Culture. Art. Nature. Peace. Beauty. Sunshine, and more…
Welcome to the city of Athens! A rose among thorns – a
beautiful melody – a diamond in a rock. It’s a crystal,
sparkling with all its might. Athens is an ancient, yet modern
city. Old and new mixes here everywhere and blends magically.
Athens was established around 7,000 years ago, but the 5th
century was Athens’ golden age. Many fantastic structures were
built then; many are ruins now, but reconstructed so we can
admire them today. Millions of tourists visit Athens every
year. The current population of Athens is around 4 million,
majority of them Greeks. Athens is a very interesting city to
live in, so much history and culture, so many places to visit,
so many things to learn. People are nice and welcoming. Greek

“Long ago, there was a beautiful town. The people of that town needed a god to protect and guide them, so
Poseidon (the god of sea), and Athena (the goddess of peace and wisdom) offered to rule the town. Only one god
could be the protector of the town, so they decided to have a contest: who can give a better gift to the people
of this town. Poseidon struck a rock with his trident and a spring of water appeared. Water is very important for
a city, but when people tasted it, it was salty, like the sea. Athena planted a small seed in a ground, which
grew up to become a lovely olive tree. The citizens liked this gift better because it would give them shelter,
food, oil and firewood. Can you guess who won? Athena of course! Athena named the city after herself. That’s
where the name ‘Athens’ came from. Then, Athena planted an olive tree, and marked it as the symbol of peace. The
citizens of Athens built many glorious temples dedicated to their goddess, organized festivals to honor her and
when money was invented, they put Athena and her sacred bird, the owl, the symbol of wisdom, on both sides of
their coins. Athena planted olive trees all over the slopes of Acropolis.”
I loved that story, and I got up, full of energy, and made it to the top of the Acropolis before everybody
else. It was so much fun! I love Athens!

Interesting Facts
The earliest Greek civilizations developed nearly 4,000 years ago. Yet, their culture still impacts our
lives today in the arts, philosophy, science, math, literature, and politics. Here are a few gifts we received
from the ancient Greeks:
- Trial by Jury (Juries started in Athens around 500 BC, similar system is still used today in many countries,
for example: in USA.)
– Columns (The Ancient Greeks invented 3 types of columns. The columns were placed to support a building. Today
these column designs are used on buildings all over the world.)
– Theater (Every town in ancient Greece had at least one theater. Theater was very important; crowds of people
would come to see a play. The ancient Greeks held drama competitions with winners for playwriting and
performing. They built huge outdoor theaters, with orchestra pit - the stage area and the seating section. It
was called the Theatron, which is the origin of our word "theatre".)
– The Olympics (The ancient Greeks loved competitions, especially sporting competitions. The Olympics were the
most popular competition in ancient Greece. Many cities-states competed in Olympics, like Athens, Sparta,
Calydon, Corinth, Argos, and Megara. Athens built the giant 80.000-seat Olympic Stadium, which ruins we can
still see today. Athens hosted the Olympics until 1896, when the modern Olympics started. Today the Olympics are
the world’s biggest sport competition organized every four years in different countries around the world.)
– Democracy (Around 2400 years ago, only in Athens, and only for a short time, "rule by many" meant that all
citizens had to take an active part in government. That was the law. One man, one vote, majority ruled. That was
the base for democracy that we know in many countries around the world today.)
– Science (Science in Ancient Greece was based on logical thinking and mathematics. It was also based on
technology and everyday life. The Greeks found that the earth was round.)
– Art (The artists in Ancient Greece were sculptors and painters. The paintings were painted on walls, as
decoration for rooms, like murals or wallpaper and also on pottery. Ancient Greeks loved music).
Ancient Greek architecture, art, drama, literature, history, philosophy, politics, science and math are bases
for all our knowledge today. Thousands of years later and we still learn from Ancient Greeks! How amazing is
that?

Two traditional pastimes that are unique to Shanghai is the

The Massive Change of Stockholm
It’s changed so much as a war on a plain field. Around the 1990’s, the people have changed the landscape by
removing part of the dock and putting in a street. Also all the buildings are lined up so people can go further in
the street. Also, it is much more modern and has more buildings and apartments. There is also a small place to
dock at the side for boats. They have also planted trees to make it a little more nice and fresh. The Swedish
changed the landscape because they thought that they would get a higher population, and more people to come to
Stockholm for this new change. Well, they were correct. The effect was that the population raised a lot after that
change.
The most important thing I’ve learned about the landscape of Stockholm, is that if you change the land
in a good way, then the population will grow.

Mumbai The Basics
The city of Mumbai is the largest city in India and is locate at the west
coast of India. The population is over 15 million. It’s humid most of the
time because it rains a lot there. One of the main mottos of Mumbai is
“stop terrorism” because of the 26/11that happened 6 years ago. That
symbol that describes the city of Mumbai is the Rupee sign since
Mumbai has a thriving economy. The two main languages are Marathi
and Hindi. Mumbai also thrives with people from different countries like
America, China and Japan. Mumbai is famous for a snack named Vada
Pao.
Some of the holidays in Mumbai are Holy, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi,
Independence Day and Republic Day. The buildings in Mumbai that
really stand out are Gateway of India, general post office, High Court,
The general port and Chaparati Shivaji Maharaj Railroad Station.
The city of Mumbai is flat and one fourth of it is below sea level.
Because of this Mumbai was hit by a huge typhoon in 2005. Mumbai
receives heavy rain each year which floods the whole city.
Mumbai has grown rapidly since 1800’s. Mumbai's literacy rate is higher
than the Indian average, where as the birth rate is lower. Mumbai is one
of the world’s largest metropolitan cities. Mumbai is known all over the
world.
Juhu beach
On the 26th of July in 2005, it started to rain so hard to you couldn’t see
anything. The heavy rain started to cause flooding in the whole city.
There was a lot of panic. On that day Mumbai could have been
compared with an ant hill that had been invaded by an anteater.
Mumbai was then hit by a large flood, in which more than 5,000 people
died. Because of the flood there was no electricity supply for the whole
day. Many people lost their houses, jobs and families. There was a lot of
traffic. People were being rescued since the water level was very high
everywhere in Mumbai. That day Mumbai looked like a puddle filled
with water.
Modern Mumbai! As a result the Mumbai has completely changed. People have now
improved the sewage system so that what happened in 2005 does not
(lots of happen again in the future. People have made different choices about
construction) where to live. People now prefer to live on higher platforms. As a fact
the Mumbai is now completely recovered from the natural disaster. But,
still in 2011 the thought of the terrible disaster terrifies many people.

Population of
Mumbai

Mumbai was known as the Present-

like most of the other cities in Before there hardly use to be

reasons why people moved to now since most multinational

available. Since then the average. The city of Mumbai
population and literary rate is now known all over the
have grown rapidly. world.
One of the events that changed the landscape of a part of the city The Taj during 26/11
was the 26/11. This event was known all over the world. This
happened on 11/26/08. There was a terrorist attack in the five star
Taj hotel. The attack lasted for 2 days. By the end of this event the
hotel was completely destroyed. This terrorist attack was to take
revenge.
Then Taj hotel was partially rebuilt by the year 2009. If you
compare the picture of the Taj from past to the latest pictures then
you will see that not only the Taj has been rebuilt but also a lot
other buildings have been build in the background. Also the harbour
is crowded with ferries and boats.
Because of these events and new buildings, the cities landscape has
changed completely. Now Mumbai is one of the most famous cities
in the world. Mumbai in 2010

What Rome’s All About
Rome is one of the most successful
cities in the world from the past to the
present. In the olden days the Romans
fought off Greeks, Egyptians and Middle-
Easterns and created and led the largest
and strongest empire. They nearly
covered all of the Mediterranean. Enough
about Ancient Rome let’s talk about
modern Rome.
Italy has always been famous for
soccer, history/religion, fashion and food.
Let’s start with soccer. Italy itself is very
good at soccer but the roman team AS

this for his own advantage;
he knew that this would
bring more people, and to
him people means money.
Benito Mussolini born on
July 29th 1883 was soon des-
tined to become a dictator from 1943-
1945. He had total power over Rome until
1945. Like I said, he’s not the nicest guy
on earth. His selfish intentions became

learn. Benito Mussolini also thought that
if they repaired these ancient creations of
art more tourists will come and they will
increase in their economy, though that
would help it would also increase the
crime-rate because many tourists or peo-
ple who live in Rome are very rich so
people who aren’t as fortunate\wealthy
will be driven to steal or kill then steal
money from the innocent people who just
want to explore the wonders of Rome.
Mussolini also thought that Rome should

Lucky City
! Imagine that you are the luckiest man on earth every day. Ireland is known
for the four leaf clover or for being lucky. Dublin, originally called dubh linn was
founded by Vikings. When the Vikings expanded too much dubh linn was
conquered by the Celts/Celtics and when they captured the city they called it
Dublin. Dubh linn means “black pool” because back then there was a really dark
spot near Dublin in River Liffey. An important thing for Dublin is to be where it
is because River Liffey provides fresh water to drink and water crops, because
the Irish Sea is a salt water Sea. The river is like drinking really cold fresh water
on a hot humid day. In Dublin Castle there are different architectural details in
the watch tower, main building and church because a ton of different people
from different cultures conquered Dublin so they have wanted their own
architectural style to be included in the buildings. The architecture is very
different just as every snowflake is. What I’m trying to tell you is
that Dublin is the BEST city to visit or even move to because of
its famous and beautiful landmarks, and because of it’s really
friendly people. If you go there maybe you’ll get the “Luck of
