Principal- March Principal’s Message

Mr. Buchanan Despite what the weather is telling us…spring cannot be too far away! March is straight
ahead for us and with it comes the beginning of Lent. Lent is a very important time for us and

we begin our preparations on Ash Wednesday. Our Ash Wednesday celebration will be on

March is an important month for our grade 8 students. They are busily preparing and
making decisions regarding their High School registrations. There grade 8 Farewell photos will
be taken the morning of Monday March 14th so all the grade 8s must make sure they arrive at
school with big smiles on their faces that morning! Our grade 8 class will also be spending the
School morning of Tuesday, March 29th at the church for a half day retreat. It is a great month to be in

Statement Report cards go out on Wednesday, March 23rd. There are no scheduled interview times
for this report period. However, if you have any questions please feel free to contact your

The school year is flying by! It is hard to believe that we are well over half way

BAND
Full Band - Ash Wednesday (March 9, 2011):
There will be no Full Band rehearsals this day, due to scheduled Ash Wednesday Masses for all of
the schools. St. Michael School will have afternoon sectionals as per usual. Grade 8 band students will par-
ticipate in the "Grade 8 Band Orientation Lunch" on this day as well (see below for more information).

Reminder For All Grade 8 Band Students:

On Wednesday, March 9, all grade 8 band students will be transported to O'Neill High School at 11:45am for
the "Grade 8 Band Orientation Lunch". Pizza and drinks will be provided at no cost to the students. Grade 8
students will have the opportunity to perform a few tunes with the high school band and listen to a
small group of high school students speak about their band experiences. Students will be returned to their re-
spective schools by 12:45pm. Grade 8 students: remember to bring your instruments!

Optimist Festival:
Our Optimist Festival performances are coming up very quickly! This is the yearly music festival which oc-
curs during school hours at the Conexus Arts Centre. Students will receive an important information handout
this week regarding the festival, so please ask your student about this letter!

Band Report Cards:

Band Report Cards will be included with regular classroom reports this month. Please read through these
with your student, sign them, and have your student return them directly to Miss Hognerud at their next band
rehearsal.

We are still in need of parent volunteers for the Regina Catholic School Band Parent Association! Please

Greetings from your Regina Catholic School Division Board of Trustees!

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your advocacy and support during
last year’s Correct the Inequity campaign.

In light of the February 15, 2011 announcement by the Ministry of Education,

concerning the delay of the new funding formula for the next school year, please know
that your Trustees will monitor and continue to impress upon the Ministry the need to
address the funding inequity presently in place. As we move toward the 2011-2012
school year, please also know that the Board of Trustees will continue to work
diligently to ensure our students receive equitable funding toward a quality Catholic
education.

As we prepare for Lent, with the ultimate celebration of Easter, we wish you and your
family God's many blessings!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION:
We are currently accepting Kindergarten registrations for the 2011-2012 school year.
Students who will celebrate their 5th birthday prior to December 31, 2011 (born in 2006) are
eligible to enroll. Please contact the Mrs. Schneider, at 791-7350 to arrange a suitable time
to come in, register, and tour our facility. Please notify families with Kindergarten-aged
children. We welcome the opportunity to speak to interested parents about our school’s
programs.

LENTERN PROJECT.. Mrs. Sirdar

Thank you to all the children who supported the Holy Childhood
Valentine’s Day Fundraiser by making guesses about how many candies
they thought were in our “Jar of Love”. We raised a total of $94.25 – that
means 377 guesses were made!! Congratulations to Hannah Jensen in
Grade 6 for being the closest to guess 1072 candies when there was an
actual amount of 1071!

To continue this kindness as we enter the Lenten season and are reminded to think of others more than
ourselves, we plan to hold our Penny Drive once again in support of the Holy Childhood Association.
Starting the week of March 28th and ending with an Assembly on Friday, April 8th, we are asking
students to bring in their spare change, in any denomination they wish, to support our Pie-in-the-Face
Fundraiser. For every $100.00 raised, a staff member’s face will be added to the wall in the gym and they
will be on the roster to receive a pie in the face at the Assembly, on Friday, April 8th.

More information will be included with your child’s report card this month. We thank you for your
anticipated support.

FAITH TIPS FOR PARENTS

The season of Lent begins on Wednesday, March 9th. This six week preparation period for Easter provides
parents with a wonderful opportunity to pass on the faith to their children. Traditionally Lent has been a
time for the practices of prayer, fasting and alms-giving. The church doesn’t require children younger than
14 to fast. However, it does encourage even young children to pray and give alms to the less fortunate. A
fun way of getting your children into the Lenten spirit is to have a pre-Lenten party where you say
goodbye to the Alleluia (which will not be sung throughout Lent) and you pop balloons to discover what
your family Lenten practices will be during Lent. Have the entire family write down on small slips of
paper some possible Lenten practices such as: we will pray before each meal, we will give part of our
allowance each week to the poor, we will do our chores around the house without complaining, we will
spend less time playing video games, online or watching TV and more time together as a family. Put the
slips of paper into balloons, blow the balloons up and tie them, and then at your pre-Lenten party, have
your family break the balloons. The paper that each family member gets becomes their Lenten practice.
