Course Description
Informal Geometry focuses on the key topics that provide a strong foundation in the essentials of
geometry.

Students will use basic terms of geometry, including symbols, definitions, postulates, and theorems that
apply to spatial relationships. They will be taught basic logic principles such as patterns and if/then
statements. Students will study segments, angles, and relationships with parallel/perpendicular lines.
They will use triangle relationships along with the distance formula and Pythagorean Theorem. Students
will study congruence as it specifically relates to triangles and be introduced to multi-step proofs. They
will learn properties of quadrilaterals, parallelograms, and trapezoids. Similarity with polygons and
especially triangles will be introduced, and students will solve relationships involving ratios, proportions,
scale factors, and dilations. Area, perimeter, and angle relationships will be studied as they apply to
regular polygons, circles, and quadrilaterals such as the rhombus, trapezoid, and parallelogram.

Standards

1. Students will use numbers, number sense, and number relationships in a problem-solving
situation. (Standard 1).
2. Students will apply geometric concepts, properties, and relationships in a problem-solving
situation. (Standard 2).
3. Students will use algebraic methods to investigate, model, and interpret patterns involving shapes.
(Standard 4).

Performance Standards

Advanced. In a complex problem-solving situation, using appropriate tools and technology, 11th-grade
students work independently to apply geometric concepts, properties, and relationships. Students analyze
and represent information with greater than 80% accuracy. Students are able to consistently communicate
reasoning to justify their solutions based on appropriate terms/definitions/theorems.

Proficient. In a problem-solving situation, using appropriate tools and technology, 11th-grade students
work, with little outside help, to apply geometric concepts, properties, and relationships. Students analyze
and represent information with greater than 70% accuracy. Students are able to communicate reasoning
most of the time to justify their solutions based on appropriate terms/definitions/theorems.
