consists of five boroughs: The Bronx,
Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and
Staten Island. With a population of
8.4 million distributed over a land
area of just 305 square miles (790
km2), New York is the most densely
populated major city in the United
States. As many as 800 languages are
spoken in New York, making it the
most linguistically diverse city in the
world. The New York metropolitan
area’s population is the United States’
largest, estimated at 19.1 million
people distributed over 6,720 square
miles (17,400 km2). The New York
metropolitan area is also part of the
most populous combined statistical
area in the United States, containing
22.2 million people as of 2009 Cen-
sus estimates.
New York traces its roots to the 1624
founding of New Amsterdam as a
trading post by Dutch colonists. The
city and its surrounds came under
English control in 1664, and was re-
named New York after King Charles
II of England granted the lands to his
brother, the Duke of York. New York
served as the capital of the United
States from 1785 until 1790. It has
been the country’s largest city since
1790.
Prestige
New York City’s financial district,
anchored by Wall Street in Lower
Manhattan, functions as the financial
capital of the world and is home to
the New York Stock Exchange, the
world’s largest stock exchange by
total market capitalization of its listed
companies. Manhattan’s real estate
market has become reputed as one
of the most prized and expensive in
incorporates the highest concentra-
tion of Chinese people in the West-
ern Hemisphere. Numerous colleges
and universities are located in New
York, including Columbia University,
New York University, and Rockefeller
University, which are ranked among
the top 100 in the world.
Tourism
Tourism is one of New York City’s
most vital industries, with more than
40 million combined domestic and
international tourists visiting each
year in the past five years. Major
destinations include the Empire State
Building; Statue of Liberty; Ellis Is-
land; Broadway theater productions;
museums such as the Metropolitan
Museum of Art; greenspaces such
as Central Park and Washington
Square Park; Rockefeller Center;
Times Square; luxury shopping along
events such as the Halloween Parade
in Greenwich Village, the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade, the St. Pat-
rick’s Day parade, seasonal activities
such as ice skating in Central Park
in the wintertime, the Tribeca Film
Festival, and free performances in
Central Park at Summerstage. Special
experiences outside the key tour-
ist areas of the city include, but are
not limited to the Bronx Zoo; Coney
Island; and the New York Botanical
Garden.
In 2010, New York City had a record
number of tourists with 48.7 million.
Since the United States economy
is still recovering, Mayor Michael
Bloomberg’s goal is to break the re-
cord again in 2012 by drawing more
than 50 million tourists.

Typography:
I used Minion Pro for the majority of the text in the brochure because of its classic serif
look. I felt it is appropriate when it comes to describing New York City since it has so
much history.

In addition, I used Helvetica for the title of the brochure because I wanted to use a font
that was simple yet can still make an impact.
