Dear Whoever,
The 15 Power Words are an exceedingly useful tool for the CRCT. The ability to have the knowledge
of these words help you understand the questions and help you discover the answer to them. The 15 Power
Words are Summarize, Analyze, Trace, Evaluate, Infer, Describe, Visualize, Predict, Compare, Contrast,
Advise, Elaborate, Explain and Support.
Summarizing is just like putting a long version into a short version. For example, if you have read
the book º
the summarized version of it would be, November Blues is a book that tells the
story a 16 year old November whose suffering from a lost boyfriend. As if things werenǯt hard enough now
she is pregnant, and the baby is his. November now faces the hardest time of her life when friends and
family interfere in the wrong way. Still throughout her journey she learns positive aspects of life and
makes fantastic new friends.
Next is Analyze which is to break something down. For instance, an outline is an example of
analyzing due to the fact that you are listing little parts of a book that are important. Tracing is listing the
steps. A timeline is tracing since you are listing the steps through time.
Evaluate is judging. Everybody constantly evaluates things, such as going to the mall and evaluating
the clothing you are about to buy. Infer means to read between the lines, such as a comic strip. Describing
is to tell about. If someone had asked you, DzWhat type of car is that?dz You may say, DzIt is a white car.dz
Visualizing is painting a picture in your head, such as when you read a book and you can see in your head
how the story is played off.
To predict is to think what may happen next. Let us say youǯre in a movie theatre watching a horror
film. As you are watching you are simultaneously thinking, DzWhatǯs going to happen, is he going to survive,
where is the killer?dz Comparing and Contrasting usually go together. Comparing is to find the similarities
between 1, 2, 3 or more things, while contrasting is to find the difference.
To advise is to recommend something. It is like when you go ask a friend or a family member for
advice on a situation currently happening in your life. Elaborating is to tell more about something. An
example is to use larger vocabulary. If you had the sentence, the orange is good; you could say the exquisite
orange is exceedingly divine.
Explaining is to tell how. On news broadcasts, when reporters talk about a deadly car accident they
tell how it happened, whether it was a drunk driver or the road was slippery. Last but not least, Support
which means to back something up. In a court house, lawyers constantly need supporter such as witnesses
or people who knew the suspect.
In conclusion, the 15 power words are a useful tool in everyday life. Whether it is shopping, reading,
eating, writing, or even socializing. The 15 power words are there even when you donǯt notice it and
without them, understanding many things could be difficult.
Yours sincerely as always,
