Summer 2011 and/or Fall 2011 Academic Support Services Fieldwork Position
Description of Position:
Academic Support Services is looking for two talented and motivated graduate students to serve as fieldwork interns for
the upcoming Summer semester and/or Fall 2011 semester. Duties for the positions are outlined below but will be
adjusted depending on experience and availability of interns.
General Duties:
Support undergraduate students post- community college transfer, in areas such as academic development and
utilizing USC resources
Manage daily operations such a creating student resource tools, e-mail updates and contact lists for both
current and prospective USC transfer students
Maintain relationships with students, off-campus colleagues, and university faculty and staff
Summer Duties (intern must be available through the second week of August 2011):
Develop, coordinate and execute Immersion Experience program for incoming community college transfer
students to help them adjust to USC beyond Orientation. This includes but is not limited to:
o Recruiting students and presenters to participate in event by contacting both campus and off campus
entities
o Organizing program schedule and reserving space for event
o Collaborate with existing offices to present a support network
Fall Duties (intern must be available through the second week of December 2011):
Check-in with first semester transfer students and maintain current/active lists of student information in
order to maintain continuous contact
Maintain outreach (community college) programming
Design and deliver a retention/transition program for continuing USC transfer students
Background of Position:
Continuing the same mission of the Scholars Program( please visit http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/SCholars/ for an
overview of the SCholars Program), the Transfer Student Intern will support current USC community college transfer
students and continue relationships with prospective community college students.
Required Qualifications:
Current student in the (Higher) Educational Counseling or PASA program
Sensitivity to transfer students’ needs and familiarity with the community college transfer student process
Interested students must be extremely professional and self-directed as supervision will be minimal. Candidate
must be organized, responsible and able to take initiative.
Excellent communication skills including written and oral skills specifically for presentations.
Availability to work at least 6-10 hours a week.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience dealing with student transition and academic support services
Previous direct experience working with community college and/or transfer students
