CLOUD COMPUTING

ABSTRACT

Cloud computing is computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require
end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the
services. Cloud computing is composed of several services like Infrastructure as a Service,
Hardware as a Service, Platform as a Service and Software as a Service. Cloud computing needs
all-accepted or dominant protocols, like the TCP/IP Protocols in internet surfing[1] . Cloud
computing is the combination of several prior computing concepts like Grid Computing, Utility
Computing and Virtualization.

Since cloud computing enables users to store all their data on the web, users need not worry
about storage capacity. Thus it makes possible for user never to lose data when he drops his
beloved laptop. This feature also enables the user to access information everywhere. Also when
accessing an application on the cloud, the user can be sure of getting the latest version[2]. One of
the greatest advantages of cloud computing is that the user is no longer tied to a traditional
computer to use an application.

Services provided by the cloud computing include management of photo and video folders,
webmail, agenda and a variety of documents, including spreadsheets, in addition to all the
services currently available on the web. Also important to the notion of cloud computing is the
automation of different management tasks. If the system requires human management to allocate
processes to resources, it is not a cloud[2].

Cloud Computing can have a significant impact in business by reducing the footprint of IT
operations by taking out the upfront capital investments needed for hardware and software
licensing. It enables a Use what you Need and Pay for what you Use cost model[3].

Issues like lack of Control, Security and Data Privacy, Service Level Agreements, Compliance,
Data Loss and new application model costs/adoption are some of the requirements that need to
be addressed.
