“Chances are if you own a
car, it needs some work.

is ready for the spring and

The Car Care Council
recommends 10 basic
maintenance procedures
to keep your car operating
at its best:
* Check the oil, filters
and fluids. Oil should be
checked at every fill-up
and changed per the
owner’s manual recom-
mended intervals. Brake,
transmission, power steer-
ing, coolant and wind-
shield washer fluids should
also be checked regularly.
Your car’s filters, including
those for the transmission,
fuel system and interior
ventilation, need regular
inspection and replace-
ment.
* Inspect hoses at each
oil change and have them
replaced when leaking,
brittle, cracked, rusted,
swollen or restricted.
Check V-belts and
serpentine belts for
looseness and condition,
and have them replaced
when cracked, frayed,
glazed or showing signs of
excessive wear. Typically
replace the timing belt
between 60,000 and
90,000 miles or the
interval specified in the
owner’s manual to avoid a
breakdown or serious
engine damage.
* Check the engine

* Check that the battery
connection is clean, tight
and corrosion-free. The
battery should be securely
mounted. If it is three
years old or more, the

and broken supports or
hangers if there is an
unusual noise. Exhaust
leaks can be dangerous
and must be corrected
without delay.
* Schedule a tune-up
that will help the engine
deliver the best balance of
power and fuel economy
and produce the lowest
level of emissions.
* Check the car’s
heating, ventilating and air
conditioning (HVAC) sys-
tem as proper heating and
cooling performance is
critical for interior comfort
and for safety reasons,
such as defrosting.
* Inspect the steering
and suspension system
annually, including shock
absorbers and struts, and
chassis parts, such as ball
joints, tie rod ends and
other related components.
* Check the pressure of
all tires, including the
spare, at least once a
month. Check the tread for
uneven or irregular wear
and cuts and bruises along
the sidewalls. Have your
car’s alignment checked at
least annually to reduce
tire wear and improve fuel
economy and handling.
* Test exterior and
interior lights and have
bulbs that are not working
checked immediately.
Replace windshield wiper
blades every six months or
when cracked, cut, torn,
streaking or chattering for
optimum wiping perfor-
mance and safety.

clean out the crumbs,
papers, water bottles, fast
food wrappers and other
stuff that accumulate in the
family car. This Mother’s
Day, May 8, surprise mom
with the simple gift of a
clean car that will not only
make her smile, but will
also lessen her driving
distractions, according to
the Car Care Council.
“Just about every mom
knows what it feels like to
have a water bottle rolling
dangerously close to the
brake or gas pedal.
Getting this stuff out of the
car and giving it a good
thorough cleaning will go a
long way toward elimina-
ting hazards that can be a
distraction to mom, making
for safer driving condi-
tions,” said Rich White,
executive director, Car
Care Council.
When cleaning the car,
approach the inside first
and follow with the
outside. Remove all trash,
including what has
accumulated in the trunk,
vacuum the inside and
clean the windows.
When washing the
outside, include the tires
and wheels and the
underside and fenders to
eliminate any road salt or
grime. Wheels and tires
should be cleaned with a
mitt other than the one
used to wash the body.
This step will avoid
contaminating the vehicle’s
paint with debris from the
wheels and tires.
The vehicle should be
washed in the shade and
using a product sold
specifically for cars. The
council recommends
washing one section at a
time, thoroughly rinsing
away the soap as you go.
Clean the fenders and
bumpers last since they
will have the most dirt and
grime that can contam-
inate the wash mitt.
The car should get a final
rinse by letting water
cascade down the
surfaces of the vehicle. To
avoid water spots, use a
chamois or other product
made for drying to dry the
car.
Time permitting, you
may also want to wax the
car according to the
manufacturer’s instructions
for application. Waxing
should always be done out
of direct sunlight and every
six months.
Any stone chips, rust or
other problem spots
identified while washing
your vehicle should be
taken care of immediately
to prevent further damage.
For an added touch after
the car is clean, consider
adding a liter bag or car
freshener, or accessorizing

your clocks; change the batteries in your smoke
detector, we are advised. What if we take this a step
further and say, change your vehicle’s air filter; change
your driving style.
“If changing the air filter helps improve a vehicle’s
overall performance, then it is a good idea to adjust
your driving style as well,” says Chuck Kerrigan,
Director of Marketing at Purolator Filters NA LLC.

your air filter will improve your engine’s performance;
and changing your driving habits can enhance fuel
economy while taking advantage of your engine’s new-
found attitude,” Kerrigan says.

Clean air = long life and improved performance
“The logic is the same,” Kerrigan says. “Just as
breathing clean air contributes to a long and healthy
life, so also a vehicle’s engine that ‘breathes’ clean air
performs better over a longer period of time. Abrasive
dust, dirt and other contaminants that can enter through
the engine’s air intake ducts while you are driving can
damage a car’s internal engine components, increase
wear and ultimately reduce the engine’s power,
performance and long life.
A vehicle ingests about 10,000 gallons of air to
burn a single gallon of fuel and, air along roads and
highways contains all kinds of contaminants such as
soot, dirt, leaves, straw, tiny bits of rubber, etc. Large
quantities of unfiltered air entering the engine
compartment can damage critical engine components
and cause cylinder wear.
Choosing a quality air filter
“Capacity and efficiency in capturing the dirt before
it enters the engine combustion chamber are key to
determining the quality of an air filter,” says Kerrigan.
“Capacity is the amount of dirt the filter can hold before
it begins to restrict air flow and efficiency describes how
well it performs in capturing the dirt.” Modern engines

So, what kind of adjustments will you need to make
in how you drive to take full advantage of that
improvement?
• Avoid making “jackrabbit” starts and stops. You
need apply a lot less pressure on the gas pedal or the
brakes if you give yourself enough time to get to your
destination.
•Drive gently and smoothly for a more comfortable
ride. Aggressive and fast driving will waste gas and
lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and
by 5 percent around town, according to the EPA.
•Stay within speed limits. Gas mileage decreases
rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each additional 5 mph
increases fuel usage by about 7-8 percent (calculation
based on EPA figures – see Web site mentioned
above).
In the final analysis
It’s always best to opt for a name-brand filter
whose quality and design features are reliable and well
documented, says Purolator’s Kerrigan. “Experience
and documented innovation are key considerations with
a product like an engine air filter that can have a major
influence on the life of a $4,000 automobile engine.
Think about it, if you need surgery, you will certainly
want an experienced surgeon who has performed
many operations and who has a track record of
successful outcomes.”
According to Kerrigan, “that’s where branding plays
an important part, especially with products like filters
where motorists – even technicians – don’t have direct
access to lab test results to properly assess the
performance, durability, and value of a filter.” And

Saving Fuel, NASCAR Style

When crew chief Jeff Meendering was sitting on the
pit box every weekend during the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series season and at least once a weekend he would
ask driver of the No. 43 Cheerios Dodge Bobby
Labonte to save fuel.
Not in the environmentally conscious, fiscally
necessary way that normal, everyday highway drivers
do, of course, but the philosophy is exactly the same.
"When we ask a driver to save fuel, we're trying to get
every drop out of the tank and into the engine,"
Meendering said. "We're racing, so it's a little different
than the things you do on the highway to save fuel."
The 32-year-old Meendering, a native of Grand
Rapids, Michigan, is a former driver himself who used
to compete at the same Concord, NC Motorsports short
track that Labonte once did. He says saving fuel on the
race track is essentially the driver making the most of
what he has in the tank.

per hour you drive over 60 mph. Ease on and off the
gas if you want to make it last.

following these fuel savings tips can really save you
money at the pump.
To Flush & Fill...or Top-Off
If you changed your antifreeze recently, but your
system level is low, this may be an indication that you
have a leaky hose or loose radiator hose clamp. Any
hoses that show signs of wear, leakage, cracking or
rotting should be replaced. After making necessary
repairs, use an antifreeze ball tester (available at any
auto parts store) to make sure that the antifreeze-to-
water ratio is correct. Then, top- off with a “ready to
use” mixture of antifreeze/water such as PEAK® Long
Life 50/50 Pre-Diluted Anti-freeze & Coolant.
If your coolant system level is drastically low or the
glycol-to-water ratio is not correct, you might consider
flushing the system and then filling it with a fresh
antifreeze and water mixture to bring it back within
operating specifications.

season dropped approximately 40% from 2009, which was a
year with a poor soft mast crop and high early season bear
harvest. Conversely, in years when beech nuts are abundant,
bear take tends to increase during the regular season. This
past fall was lacking for beechnut production, and bear take
during the regular season dropped about 25% from 2009.
Hunters play a pivotal role in bear management through
reporting their bear harvests. Hunters also are asked to
submit a tooth sample from their bear for DEC to determine
the age of harvested bears. To encourage participation, DEC
issues a New York State Black Bear Cooperator Patch to all
hunters who reported their harvest and submitted a tooth.
More than 550 patches will be distributed for the 2010 hunting
season. Eligible hunters will receive their patch in late
summer 2011 when all the age data has been processed. The
average age of bears harvested is typically 3-4 years old in the
Southeastern and Central-Western areas, while bears
harvested in the Adirondacks average about 5 years old.
In addition to harvest totals, DEC uses a variety of
indices to measure bear populations. Taxidermists and DEC
wildlife personnel collect age and sex information from
harvested bears, as well as movement data from tagged bears.
This information is used to help DEC biologists manage bear
populations and establish future hunting regulations to assure
the management of black bears in New York State is at a level
that is compatible with human interests.

Fans Are Straw That Stirs NASCAR
Deep down, some fans must know they’re stark, raving mad.
It’s in a good way. In fact, enthusiastic, outrageous, shirts-and-
caps-collecting fans make the NASCAR world go around. The drink
they’re stirring is a margarita. Declaring the Reggie Jackson cliché
obsolete on account of the statute of limitations, the fans, collectively,
are the straw.
When that green flag waves, and Darrell Waltrip commences to
hollerin’, they are crazy as Charlie Sheen. Sheen wants some of what
those folks are on.
God love ‘em.
But it’s unreasonable to believe that either, a) NASCAR, or b) Rick
Hendrick doesn’t want Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win. It’s no more reasonable
to believe that NASCAR wants Jimmie Johnson to win the Sprint Cup
championship every year.
Even in Daytona Beach, Fla., most things are on the level.
Many folks seem to think that the media has a bias. This is because
it’s difficult for a journalist to think in the head of a fan, who thinks
anyone whose opinion is different from his is biased. He or she is biased
against him or her, and it’s true, simply because he or she isn’t, in fact,
him or her.
He is on first. She is on second. Him is at short. Her is at third.
Who’s on the hill? I Don’t Know. Likes to throw curves.
NASCAR fans make the sport go round. Some of them are crazy. A

What has recently become apparent is that many fans think it’s
perfectly appropriate for members of the media to jump up and down,
stomp and cheer wildly after a driver wins a race, which begs the
question: Do they want the media to be biased, or don’t they?
Alas, this profession has its own set of rules, same as a plumber, a
pediatrician and a politician. OK, maybe politician is a poor example.
Being stark, raving crazy, it’s natural for fans to think the media
ought to be stark, raving crazy, too. Which is true, but in a different way.
The best conclusion was probably John Prine’s. “It’s a big, old
goofy world.”

How to Block Those Pesky
Telemarketers
Three-quarters of Americans
have signed up for the Do Not Call
registry, hoping not to be bothered
by telemarketers, yet the calls keep
coming.
Unfortunately, not all calls are
covered: If you’ve done business
with a company, they can call you
for 18 months unless you ask them
to stop. It’s the same with political
groups and charities, unless they
use a telemarketing service, and
phone survey companies.
Here are some steps to take:
The magic words if a
telemarketer calls: “Please take my
number off your list. Don’t call
again.” Then hang up. They have
31 days to get you off their list.
If you haven’t signed up for
the DNC registry, go online to
www.donotcall.gov. Click Register
Now. You can put in up to three
phone numbers at a time and need
to give your email address. You’ll
later get a verification email. But
sure to click the link in that email
within 72 hours to verify that you
want your phone covered.
Don’t forget your cellphone.
While there currently isn’t a
cellphone book, if your number
does get out, telemarketers are
allowed to call you as long as they
don’t use a “robot” to make the
calls.
If you’ve signed up and you
continue to get calls, verify that
your phone numbers are on the
DNC list. Go to the same website
and click Verify a Registration.
Follow the steps, including
replying to the confirmation email.
If you want to register or verify by
phone, call 1-888-382-1222 from
the phone you want covered.
The Federal Trade
Commission goes after companies
that violate the DNC registry, but
it can pursue only the ones it
knows about. After 31 days of
your number being in the registry,
telemarketers cannot call you. If
they do, complain to the FTC at
the same number or on the
website. Have all your information
handy, such as time and date you
were called, plus the name of the
company if you have it.
In the beginning, a DNC
signup was only good for a few
years. Since 2008, however, your
signed-up phone number is
permanently protected. If you live
in a fast-growing region and your
area code changes, you don’t need
to sign up again. It’s done
automatically.
