MONTH OF YOUNG CHILD TO
BRING PARENT EDUCATION,
CELEBRATION OF CHILDREN
BIG RAPIDS – As the proposed
state budget promises cuts across
the board, the Mecosta-Osceola
Great Start Collaborative is planning
a trip to Lansing to lobby loudly on
behalf of young children.
The annual Star Power Rally, to
take place on May 19, is a chance
for parents, children and educators
to draw legislators’ attention to
the needs of young children and
the importance of early education.
The Great Start Collaborative will
spend April, the Month of the Young
Child, increasing the community’s
awareness of early education issues
and raising support for their trip to
Lansing.
“We’re glad the (state) funding
has continued, and we hope it still
remains a priority for legislators,”
said LouAnn Gregory, MOISD Great
Start coordinator.
Participants in the Star Power Rally
will take a bus from Big Rapids to
Lansing, in partnership with the
Ferris State University Students
with Children group. The deadline to
register for the rally is May 2.
“We’re hoping people speak up to
advocate for early education,” said
Chastity Holmquist, parent liaison
of the Great Start Collaborative.
“We’d like to have a full bus to show
legislators there is support for early
childhood advocacy.

has proclaimed April as the Month
