Like the main circuit board which contains the most important parts that makes a computer work, the Motherboard is the center of what is happening around the four corners of SCS. We bring you updates and news on its current activities, new technologies and feature the students' talents in Literature.

The cover portrays the yearly ICCF, which is the highly-awaited event held by SCS to promote ICT. The background is blue in color, the main color of SCS.

Like the Motherboard, the ICCF the becomes the central point of gathering, a main event where clashes and blends between the different areas of ICT come together. It is an area where students from different schools with diverse locations and cultures, interact, learn and gain knowledge and ideas through the different competitions and activities prepared for them. Truly, the ICCF is an event to be celebrated and is a worthy cover for The Motherboard.

At its third issue, we hope to continue inspiring more students to partake in the different activities with enthusiasm and willingness through sharing their talents. We present to you the 3rd issue of The Motherboard.

Young as it is, the School of Computer Studies, has already made some achievements. We have been granted status as a Center of Development in IT Education by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). With this, we continue to grow and have made notable achievements such as:

Becoming a Regional Academy under Cisco Networking Academy Program;

Being a partner of the Commission on Information Communications Technology (ClCT) in the implementation of iSchool projects Establishment of extension programs and building of Cisco Local Academies in other campuses of the MSU System as well as in

private and public Schools;

Implementation of the currently revised BS Information Technology, BS Computer Science, 3-Year Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology, and the newly approved BS Information System, Ladderized BS Electronics and Computer Technology and 2-Year Diploma in Electronics Technology, with the collaborative efforts of the faculty members; Addition of three new specialized laboratories, namely: Networking, Software Engineering and Databases, and Embedded System.

Continues construction of Information and Communication Technology Center (ICTC) building and the replica of the ESET Building;

Crafting of the vision and mission during the first participative strategic planning of our college.

Consecutive achievements of our students and faculty members in passing the International industry certifications like CCNA, Fluke, ICDL LPI, etc. and the National Certification exams in Computer Hardware Servicing NCII, PC Operations NCII, and Consumer Electronics Servicing NCII;

Rapid increase of the student population in our college for the past few years.

As your current Dean and for the next three years, I sincerely welcome more than one thousand enrollees this year into the School of Computer Studies and to the Institute as well. Your path of a successful life begins here. Moreover, I am confident that we shall be working hand in hand with the many programs and activities. Just this month, we are hosting the 8th Iligan City Computing Fair (ICCF 2010) with the theme: "The Role of ICT: Promoting Socio-Economic and Cultural Development in Mindanao" I am looking forward to your continued support in our endeavors.

It is of a worthy note that the administration and our college have sustained the support we extend to your projects and activities, some of which are conveyed in your student publicotion. the Motherboard. Our support to this publication has been fruitful. Indeed, this is a very good output of your collaborative efforts. We have greatly appreCiated this endeavor and I am hoping there would be more productive outputs very soon which hopefully can contribute to the development of our college and of the Institute as a whole.

With the various achievements you have earned, you deserve our sincerest congratulations. We are proud of you. More so when your student organization shall endeavor to venture into research and extension projects that will help our community, not just MSU-IIT but also the global village, in many ways. Hence, we are looking forward to a transfer of your knowledge and skills to a more productive output. You may encounter difficulties as you hurdle your academic and curricular activities but just believe that you will always excel in any undertakings, as Justin Bieber puts it, Never Say Never!

As we prepare to become a Center of Excellence in IT Education, we shall continue to work hand in hand with all the faculty and staff and all the student organizations like the Junior Information Technologist SOCiety (JITS), Computer SOCiety (CompSoc) and Electronics and Computer Engineering Technologist Society (ECETS), and of course the College Executive Council of SCS.

With all these initiatives and undertakings, I believe we can continue to forge a harmonious relationship among and between our faculty, students, staff and the whole constituents of MSU-IIT as we work for the realization of our vision and mission. The recently held Pasundayag concluded with the awarding of the Over-All Champion to the IT Department.

This year's Pasundayag was held last August 9-13, 2010, organized by the EC of SCS. Activities under the Literary, Sports and Cultural Events were prepared for the three departments (CS, IT, ESET) to participate in a friendly competition.

The events highlighted the Cultural Night wherein the students showcased their talents in dancing and singing. The awarding ceremony was unfortunately cut into two parts, due to security issues.

The Mr. and Ms. SCS was held prior to the formal awarding during the final night. This was the main event of the entire Pasundayag. This year's coronation, for both the male and female category, was crowned to the ComSci Department.

Initiated by Dr. Lomesindo Caparida and Prof. Rabby Lavilles, the seminar held last September 21, 20~O at MSU-IIT -- ......... Mini-Theater invited experts who presented their papers: Dr. Salasa Nawang (Image Processing), Dr. Canoy, Jr. (Graph Theory), Dr. Maglasang (Biomemitic Aerial R~botic Vehicles), ~s. Villaruz (Power Electronics), and Ms. Knsty Mae Capanda (mechanics on making poster presentations).

In closing the seminar, Prof. Ernesto E. Empig noted the efforts of the SCS to prioritize and develop a setting conducive to research.

One facu Ity from the School of Computer Studies brought honor to the school when he won first runner-up in the recently concluded "National TESDA Idol". The awarding was held at the TESDA Central Office in Manila last August 25, 2010.

That faculty is no other than Prof. Danilo Adlaon, a second TESDA Idol from MSU-IIT. He was endorsed by some non-government organizations, a religious group and an institution.

Before he won that award, he underwent tedious activity during the selection process. He was selected first from the provincial nominee then to the regional level before he got into the national level.

Asked of his latest feat, Prof Adlaon humbly said, "No-realize nako that my endeavors are really recognized considering the fact that I came from the technical profession that rose to ranks. "

He hopes that students can learn something from him who worked his way up from poverty to affluence.

Even if he is successful now, he still keeps his feet on the ground and continues to inspire not only his students but also the people in his community.

According to him, there are four steps of P's to achievement. "Plan purposefully, Prepare prayerfully, Proceed positively, and Pursue persistently."

In response to outgoing President Gloria Arroyo's mandate to solve problems on electronic waste, the Commission on Information and Communications Technology(CICT) and MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology conducted the PC Recycling Trainer's Training for Public High School Teachers in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte which started on April 13, 2010 and culminated last May 21, 2010 at the MSU-IIT Mini Theater.

Spearheaded by Vice President for Academic Affairs of the MSU System and current MSU-IIT ischools Program Director, Dr. Emmanuel M.

Lagare, the PC Recycling Program is a 10-day capability building activity that aims to build the technical skills of computer technicians in selected public high schools and ensure technical sustainability of the school's ICT equipment.

Prof. Ernesto E. Empig, then chairperson of the Department of ESET, now Dean of School of Computer Studies, and Mr. Ricardo A. Coronado, lectured in the said training-workshop about assembling and disassembling of PCs.

A supporter and trainer for ICT projects under the CICT, Empig disclosed, "I am happy that these forty three( 43) teachers, especially those who have only basic knowledge of computers, have profound interest in learning and upgrading their knowledge in order to apply whatever they have learned in this three-phase training". Further he stated, "it is our aim to extend our expertise to public high school stakeholders in our drive to bridge digital divide especially especially in the remote school areas where ICT projects and trainings are hardly received.

Participants in this training-workshop came from the following high schools: Fisheries Nhs, Iligan City East HS, Dalipuga NHS, Liangan NHS, Kapatagan NHS, Baloi NHS, Pantar NHS, New Pualas NHS, and A. Quibranza Memorial NHS. They were not exclusively IT teachers since many were teachers of other subjects. Two English teachers said that seldom their schools hired IT personnel and so they were responsible in maintaining their PC units. Another two teachers who were using computers as teaching tools in teaching Math and TLE said still they learned important baiscs during the training are were hoping to apply their knowledge and conduct similar training in their school.

Prior to the culmination program, guests and visitors were feted to a first-time ever exhibit on recycled various parts of computers. Trainers Coronado and Empig explained to the crows the participants' ingenuity as shown in their recycled projects.

Speaking to welcome the participants, Dr. Lagare admitted that in today's highly technological world, there is a need to recycle computers in order to lessen electronic wastes. Further he expressed hope that the teachers could apply and share their knowledge when they go back to their schools. In a statement to close the program, Outgoing Dean of the SCS, Prof. Jeremy Pinzon urged the trainees to practice the skills they have gained from the training. F or the first time in MSU-IIT history, the 1 st Mid-Year Commencement Exercises was held last November 22,2010 at MSU-IIT gymnasium.

Leading the graduates of the School of Computer Studies (SCS) was Connel Ivy R. Villezas, a Management Information Systems (MIS) major of Bachelor of Science in Information Technolgy (IT) who graduated as a Cum Laude with a cumulative grade of 1.7269.

SCS has a total of 52 graduates. The Computer Science department produced 6 graduates while the Information Technology department has a total of 21 graduates. The Electronics Engineering Technology department has a total of 25 graduates, 13 came from the 3-year ESET program and 12 from the 2-year DEST program.

On the first day, the event showcased some outstanding academic papers and projects by selected students mostly from MSU-IIT during the Student Project/Thesis Presentation, at the Multi Purpose Hall. While on the second day, a Technical Forum was held at the Institute Mini-Theater, where various speakers from the ICT fields shared their knowledge and expertise on topics related to ICT. GeOrgia Institute of Technology, at Atlanta U.s.A. has developed a robot that has a brain of a rat. No, its not just a CPU that is programmed to act as a rat but a real and organic rat brain stuffed inside the machine.

The invention of this "brain-controlled-biological-robotic-organism" has lead engineers and scientists to make a new type classification of robots called the "hybrots" (short for "hybrid robots"). Hybrots are semi-living robotic organisms since they can sense through sonar, they can navigate around on their own and hybrots also seem to exhibit a whole lot of behaviors which can be seen on most living organisms.

Aside from all of those, another interesting feature the hybrot has is its lonqevitv, Brain cells usually die shortly after it is separated from the living body that is why a hybrot unit has an incubator with a sealed-dish culture system to help preserve the brain. Usually a hybrot may live as long as two years.

Hybrots paved way a road of possibilities in technological advancements. One is that it may help researchers in answering on how to cure Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease since the brain can hold memory; they can test the brain inside the machine to give researchers insights on this disease.

Another possibility for advancement is that computers or machines may one day be able to fix themselves since the hybrot can actually think; there is the possibility that it can analyze problems and can therefore be able to fix itself.

It may not be long before these living robotic contraptions start leading to ideas that computer designers won't be able to ignore. So beware, brace yourselves and be ready cause the future that we often see in science fiction movies where machines rule the world may be closer to reality than we think because of these hybrots.

The last time I spent my Valentine's Day was when I was with the-one-I-almost-fell-in-Iove-with person and we went into an-i-can't-barely-understand-place in which I "almost" felt the essence of Valentine's Day. It had all started in a crazy idea, a little bit of a crazy idea. Well, if you think giving a little bit of what you have is a little bit of a crazy idea, then it is. I mean, it was not even a part of our plan but we did it and the good thing is that we really enjoyed doing it!

As part of our social welfare program, the officers and I decided to choose a venue where we can impart something that can be used and nurtured by children who are specifically in school. We had also decided that each SCS student should donate or even contribute or whatever-the-term-is at least one of the following categories: any kind of school supplies that can be used by grade school students, used clothing, canned goods, and slippers. We should meet a quota of 400 items in each category since Echavez Elementary School, the venue where we decided to reach out, has 800 students. Unfortunately, the collection of the said items was done in just a week because of the hectic schedules and unexpected events undergone by the assigned officers, thus, we didn't able to meet the said quota. Failure to meet our expectations doesn't mean that everything will end in just a glimpse; it even motivated us to be determined and do more hard work in performing our role as officers. As a motivation, we give out button pins to those students who referred at least 10 people and shirts for those who give out more than the expected value and at the same time referred more than 10 people. During the last day of collection, we have gathered a total of 130 sets of school supplies, 50 canned goods, and 98 sets of used clothing. Not bad at all, isn't it? Well, that doesn't end there. We planned to give what we had collected on Valentine's Day. That is why, last February 14, 2011, we went to Echavez Elementary School to present and give what we have. We went there as a group with one purpose: to inspire our younger brothers and sisters and motivate them to pursue their education as we impart a little bit of what we have. The program lasted for two hours, two worthwhile hours to be exact. We were very happy being with the grade school students of Echavez Elementary School and so are they to be with us. When we give out the items we had gathered and collected, they compensated us with a smile which makes our Valentine's Day more special.

What we have learned in school shouldn't end up until five in the afternoon or even after break, we should apply them appropriately and in a righteous way. Implementing activities such as an outreach program is one way of building collaborative partnership between an academe and a community. It is like building a bridge with strong foundation.

This was the first time that the School of Computer Studies - Executive Council headed by the Governor, Vinaflor N. Viajante, together with the department officers from ComSoc, JITS, and ECETs, conducted an out-reach program at a certain community. And as we leave our handprints on that community, I pretty hope that this is not yet and will not be the last one. NOW, asking Why it is different? Because it was the total opposite of last year's happenings.
