Freshwater aquaria are becoming a luxury item in many homes; it is a lovely way to enjoy a
miniature riverbed from the very comforts of your home. A beautiful aquarium with healthy,
energetic fish swimming in clear waters and surrounded by green vegetation is an amazing
sight. But, before you can consider getting one of these little havens, you need to be
prepared with all the relevant facts.

Some of the questions you should be asking yourself when about to purchase an aquarium
are how much time are you willing to spend on the aquarium? What kind of aquarium do you
want to buy? What is the ideal spot for your aquarium? What kind of fish should you in your
aquarium? How do you keep your fish and their environment healthy in the easiest and
quickest way? How much time would it take to maintain? What should you feed your fish and
how much?

Tetra availability & Schooling numbers
This group of fish consists of more than 1,500 species which are located around the world,
in tropical and subtropical zones. The species of tetra are gaining increasing popularity in

Location is key
The first thing to think about before going out to purchase the aquarium tank, you need
to examine how much free space you have for a tank. With that, you need to examine
how much of this space receives light, and which shape is best suitable for that free
space. Never place an aquarium in direct sunlight and be sure to keep away the
aquarium from heating or cooling surfaces, as these will cause sudden and drastic
changes in the temperature within the aquarium. The sunlight will also promote the
growth of algae within the tank.
Water accessibility and easy disposal of dirty water and waste are important factors to
consider while selecting a good spot for your aquarium, it wouldn’t be ideal to be
running through the house with buckets of water. In terms of family and especially
children in the house, it would be advisable to keep the aquarium in an area with less
frequent activity. Prevention is better than cure in terms of the tank being pushed over
or the tank breaking.
An aquarium can get really heavy, so the chosen spot should also be able to support the
Decor
The primary focus when it comes to the decor of your aquarium, besides the well-being
of your fish, is to keep all unsightly equipment well hidden. It is therefore nice to have
some sort of scenery at the back of the tank. The decor should be used to hide the
equipment that you are using within the tank, so that you have a more natural looking
aquarium. This enables your fish to feel more secure, as shy fish feel ‘exposed’ from all
sides, if there is nothing covering them from the back. Another inexpensive and easy
solution is to use coloured cardboards as your backdrop. They are relatively easy to
make, and can be changed as often as you wish.
In terms of interior decoration within your fish tank, vegetable matter is important.
Although Tetra species need lots of space for swimming, they do still need vegetative
cover, especially when they feel vulnerable. Another advantage of having vegetation is
that if you have Tetras that are territorial, the vegetative matter serve as boundaries for
which spaces can be marked. These include plants in the substrate as well as floating
plants. Vegetation is also important for breeding to take place. Tetras are egg layers,
which have to take place within vegetation, thus the need of good vegetation in your
tank. It takes about six days for the eggs to hatch, but the young should be separated
immediately from the adult fish, they will be eaten!

Nitrogen based substances are most frequent by-products of decomposition. This cycle
refers to the process in which this decomposition takes place. Nitrogenous waste products
in your aquarium will first break down into ammonia. This can be very toxic to your fish,

Tetra specifics
Now that we have the aquarium set up and we have the basic understanding of how tetras
should be bought and introduced into their new home, specific requirements are needed for
these tropical species of fish. As previously mentioned, these species of fish are quite hardy
fish, they require a pH of 6 – 7 but are also known to adapt to a pH of 7.5. Although these are
tropical fish, temperature does play an important role in their well being, an average
temperature range for tetras are 24 – 27 OC. However, they can tolerate temperatures as
high as 30 OC and as low as 20 OC for some tetras. Take note that different temperatures are
sometimes needed for some tetras to aid in successful breeding. As mentioned previously,
the water quality specifics are quite important not only to tetras, but any fish species. The
levels of ammonia and nitrates should be kept constant and evaluated regularly. The specific
requirements regarding water quality are 0.005 mg/l and 5-10 mg/l respectively.
Tetras popularity
As stated before, tetras are kept for their amazing shows of colour. Tetras being tropical fish
are naturally colourful fish, ranging from the bright reds and oranges, to the blues and
purples, and the glass-like to translucent species of tetras. Some examples of brilliantly
coloured tetras are the Cochu’s Blue tetras, neon tetras, Emperor tetras, Congo tetras and
Head and Tail light tetras. These are only a few; there are many varieties of tetra species
available in the ornamental trade.
Another factor that makes tetra species popular is their behavioural patterns. These are
displayed brilliantly in community tanks, making these fish ideal for these types of aquariums.
Patterns which are exhibited are dartings, these are generally not more than two seconds
long; nipping, these are general acts that occur within this species of fish and can at times
pose a threat but it can also be kept under control; shoaling; and schooling, this particular
behaviour is spectacular as a number of fish form groups and circle your tank. See figures 2 –
