ZIARAAT IN SYRIA
(With special reference to Arbaeen)
Compiled by:

FOREWARD:

(In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful)
Assalam-o-alaikum!
This booklet ‘A brief introduction of ziaraat in Syria’ is a humble attempt for the Zaireen going to
Syria. The thought behind it is simple, to bring together information and ziyarat[s] of Syria in one
book which will serve as a guide that is easy to carry and share with others.
Our experience showed that while on ziyaraat and on visiting various shrines we had to refer to
different books and although many books have been compiled for this purpose but at times they
have much more information than required. Then looking up for the particular dua or ziyarat
takes time, which is again very difficult in a crowded haram. Therefore, considering these
experiences we decided to compile an exclusive book for ziyaraat in Syria.
The places mentioned in this book are the ones popularly visited by Zaireen although there may
be other places to visit.
Almost all the pictures used here have been personally taken by us on our past trips to Syria, so if
you feel some of them are not perfectly focused, we apologize for the inconvenience. Our intent
is to share personal experience with fellow zaireen.
We pray that this small yet sincere effort will be acknowledged by Panjatan Pak [as],
Masoomeen [as] and everybody who supported in developing this book will be
inshaAllah heavily rewarded by Allah [swt].

The shrine of Bibi Zainab [sa] in ‘Zainabia’, Damascus was completed in 1990 by the
Architect Rida Mourtada1. It contains magnificent Iranian architecture and the dome is
made of pure gold. There is also a large mosque adjoining the shrine which can
accommodate more than 1300 people in it and a further 150 in the attached courtyards.
The doors of the shrine are made of pure gold with marvelous mirror works on the roof
and walls. The shrine gives a touching look at first with its breath taking appearance. The
two tall minarets of the shrine are an excellent example of the architecture.
The shrine has a large market in front of it with many religious things readily available.
The shrine is dominated by pilgrims until it is closed at 9 pm. The central management is
Iranian with a few Arabs. The majority of the pilgrims are Iranians, Pakistanis and
Bahraini, Lebanese, and Iraqi (Shia) Arabs. Sufis also visit the shrine. Prayers are led by
Ayatullah Mujtaba Hussaini and Muslims from all ethnic backgrounds can be found
praying there.

Lady Zainab [sa], daughter of Imam 'Ali [as] and grand daughter of Prophet Muhammad [saww],
was the first lady in the world of Islam to form a whole history, erect edifices of right and justice,
demolish the gloomy castle of wrong and oppression, and record, through her honorable situation,
new items of honor and dignity for Islam and Muslims, throughout history. Thus, she has been a
ring in the series of the ideal, human glories that her fathers, brothers, descendants of her
brothers, and their partisans have introduced to humanity. Lady Zainab believed in the revolution
of her brother, participated in his struggle against wrong and oppression vigorously, and adopted
the goals of this great revolution. Through her innovative speeches in the porticoes of the
Umayyad ruling centre. After the killing of her brother Imam al-Hussain [as], Lady Zainab [sa],
as well as the other harem of the Prophet's [saww] household, was taken as captive and had to be
present before the bastard 'Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad’ who was given the position of the governorship
of two Islamic provinces. There she gave the most astounding and enlightening ‘Khutbas’ which
moved everyone. She unfolded the lies of the tyrant leader ‘Yazeed’ and told the world that they
were the sons and daughters of the Holy Prophet [saww] and Hazrat Hussein [as] was the present
Imam of the times. She suffered many more tragedies including passing away of her beloved
niece, Bibi Sakina [sa] in the small dungeon [where the Harem were kept prisoners].
After the Harem were released Lady Zainab [as] took the charge of spreading the story and
purpose of Kerbala amongst the People and she did that very well. As per a ‘riwayat’ Lady
Zainab [as] went to stay in ‘Rawiya’ where she suffered from illness and fatigue. She was
walking through the Garden owned by her Husband when she came across the tree where her
beloved Brother’s Pure Head was hung, she was overtaken by sadness and pain and went
unconscious, she fell in the small stream which stopped the water from flowing. The gardener
went to inquire and when he saw her unconscious he took the chance and hit her pure head with
spade, on hearing her scream Imam Syed Sajjad [as] and a maid rushed to her side to see her
heavily wounded. On Sunday night of Rajab 14 62 Hijri she at the age of 55 the savior of Islam
Lad Zainab, daughter of the bravest Imam Ali ibne Abu Talib [as] went to join her beloved
brother and other members of Ahl-e-Bait in Heaven.
Sakina is a derivative of "Sakoon" meaning "Peace". Sakina was born on 20 Rajab, 56 AH. Her
titles includes Sakina, Ma‘sūmah, Aatika, Kulthūm, and Zaynab. Sukaina was the most beloved
daughter of Hussain ibn Ali and used to sleep on his chest every night. Hussain ibn Ali was often
heard saying, "A house without Sukaina would not be worth living in".
Like any other four-to-five year old, when Sakina went to bed at night she wanted to spend some
time with her father. Hussain ibn Ali would tell her stories of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad and
of the battles fought by her grandfather Ali ibn Abi Talib. There was a special bond between
Sukaina and her paternal uncle, Abbas ibn Ali. After the battle of Karbala, sixteen days of
suffering the miseries, the tortures and calamities for the Ahl al-Bayt. they reached Damascus.
Sakina died in Damascus at the age of 4 in 61 AH and is buried within Sayyidah Ruqayya
Mosque in Damascus. Sakīnah's body was removed from its original burial place, dungeon of
Syria, some centuries later, when a pious man of Damascus was informed in his dream that water
was pouring into the grave of Sakīnah. Upon confirmation that ground water was actually
entering the grave and ancient tomb was about to collapse (1280AH/1863AD).When shrine was
opened for restoration, blessed clothed body of her was seen to be fresh and soft (never decayed

According to Imam Hasan bin Ali Al Askari [as] The signs of a true believer are five:-
1) Pray 51 Raka’t Namaaz during the 24 hours of the day (17 Raka’ts in obligatory, and 34
Raka’ts in Naafilah Salaats).
2) Be in Karbala for Ziyaarat of Imam Husayn [as] and other martyrs, on Arbaeen if not
possible, recite Ziyaarat of the Holy Imam
3) To wear a ring in the right hand.
4) To put the forehead on the earth (preferably on the earth of Karbala) in prostration.
5) To pronounce “Bismillahir-Rah’maanir-Rah’eem” in clear and loud voice while praying
the salaats.
Why is so much importance given to the performance of the Ziyarat of Arba’een and the
observance of Arba’een (40 days of mourning)?
Ziyarat, as we all know is a visitation, which in essence, is the act of speaking with and visiting
our role models. Of course the physical manifestation of the ziyarat is actually being present in
Kerbala to perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een, but, in reality, that is not possible for every believer.
So does making ziyarat while not in Kerbala give one the same benefits? Ahadith tell us that
performing the Ziyarat of Imam Hussain [as] far from Kerbala would hold the same significance
as being in the land of Kerbala, as long as the person performing the Ziyarat has truly understood
the status of the Imam and seeks to emulate him.
Imam Muhamed al-Baqir [as] states that the heavens wept over Imam Hussain [as] for forty
mornings, rising red and setting red. As we complete 40 days of remembrance of our Imam, we
re-assert our pledge of obedience and loyalty to him:
“I bear witness that you are the Imam (who is) the upright, the pious, well-pleased (with Allah),
the pure, the guide and the rightly-guided. I bear witness that you fulfilled the pledge of Allah and
you struggled in His way…I am a friend of whoever befriends him ...”
By performing the Ziyarat of Arba’een, we pledge that we will continue to follow the path of
justice and righteousness and will reject injustice and speak up against the oppressors of the time,
I am an enemy of whoever is his enemy...
In essence, we make a promise to continue to mold our lives according to the teaching of Imam
Hussain [as].
But why is it that we mourn and remember Imam Hussain [as] for a period of forty days and then
move on?
Our Prophet has said, “The earth mourns the death of a believer for forty mornings.” Therefore
it appears that the deceased should be remembered and mourned over for a period of forty days.
Performing an act for a continuous period of forty days is also known to help one to not just form
a habit, but also to carry on the practice for the rest of his life.
If we look at studies dealing with bringing a lifestyle change, we notice the time period
emphasized to bring about a change is usually 6 weeks which is about the same time period as 40
days (to be exact it is 42 days).
Why forty days? Because the number 40 holds tremendous spiritual significance in the realm of
transformation. Jesus wandered in the desert for forty days in order to experience purification
and come to a greater understanding of himself and his mission. Moses and his people traveled
through the desert for forty years before arriving at their home in the holy land. Noah preserved
the sacredness of life by sailing his ark for forty days and forty nights. According to the
Kabbalah, the ancient Jewish mystical text, it takes forty days to ingrain any new way of being
into our system….
Reciting particular duas for a period of 40 days is highly recommended in our practices as well.
The unit 40 (forty) is said to be very effective. If a particular Duaa is recited 40 times, or 40
people gather to recite it, or it is recited for 40 days then its effectiveness is highly increased.
It is reported from Imam Ja'fer Sadiq [as] that whoever recites Dua-e-Ahad for forty days, after
morning prayers will be amongst the helpers of the 12th Imam [a]. Visitation of the shrine of
Imam Hussain [as] as well as Masjid-e-Sahla for 40 consecutive Thursdays is also very highly
recommended and is one of the acts that promises a visit from the 12th Imam [ajtf].
Thus, as we perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een and commemorate the Arba’een, 40 days of
mourning of Imam Hussain [as], we hope and pray that this forty days of remembrance of Imam
Hussain [as], brings about a transformation in us by which we can continue to follow the path of
Imam Hussain [as] and carry on his message of upholding justice with true faith and a strong
sense of sacrifice!

"I wish my forefather at badr had witnessed How the khazraj by the thorn annoyed,
They would have Glorified and Unified Allah Then they would make tahleel and say in
elation: "May your hands, o Yazid, never be paralyzed:" We have killed the master of
their chiefs. And equated it with Badr, and it was so, indeed Hashim played with the
dominion so indeed. No news came, nor was there a revelation revealed. I do not belong
to khandaf. I do not seek revenge from Ahmed's children for what he to us had done"
”All Praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Allah has blessed His Messenger and all
his messenger's progeny. Allah, Glory to him, has said the truth when he said,” Then the
end those who committed evil was that they disbelieved in Allah's signs and they were
ridiculing them."(Quran, 30:10) Do you, O Yazid, think that when you blocked all the
avenues before us, so we were driven as captives, that we are light in the sight of ALLAH
and that you are superior to us? Or is it because you enjoy with Him a great status, so you
look down at us and become arrogant elated, when you see the world submissive to you
and things are done as you want them, and when our authority and power became all
yours? But wait! Have you forgotten that Allah has said," Do not regards those who
disbelieved that we grant them good for themselves? We only give them a respite so that
they may increase their sins, and for them there is a humiliating torment"(Qur’an 3:178)?
Is it fair, O son of taleeq, that you keep your free as well as slave women in there in their
chambers and at the same time drive the daughter of the messenger of Allah as captive
with their veils removed and faces exposed, taken by their enemies from one land to an
other, being viewed those at watering places as well as those who man your forts with
their faces exposed to the looks of every one near or distant, lowly or honorable, having
non of their protectors with them nor any of their men? But when can be expected from
one whose mouths chewed the livers of the purified ones and whose flesh grows out of
the blood of the martyrs? How can it be expected that one who looks at us with grudge
and animosity, with hatred and malice, would not hate us we Ahle bait [a.s]? Besides you
with out feeling any guilt or weighing heavily what you say, you recite saying:
"Then they would make tehleel and say in elation: May your hands, O yazid never be
paralyzed!"
How dare you hit the lips of Abu-Abdullah, the Master of youth of paradise? But why
should you not do so, since you stirred a wound that almost healed, and since all mercy is
removed from your heart, having shed the blood of the offspring of the Muhammad peace
and blessing of Allah be upon him and his progeny, and the stars on the earth from
among the family of Abu-Muttalib? Then you cite your mentors as of you speak to
them… soon shall you be lodged with them, and soon shall you wish you were paralyzed
and muted and never said what you said or did what you did.
Allah suffices you as your judge and Muhammad, peace and blessing of Allah be upon
him and his progeny, as your opponent, and Gabriel as your foe. All those who instigated
you to do what you did and who put you in charge so that you might play havoc with the
lives of the Muslims, how evil the end of the oppressors is and which of you shall have
the worst place and will be the least protected? Although calamities has forced me to
speak to you, I nevertheless see you small in my eyes and find your verbal attack great,
and I regard your rebuke too much bear, but these eyes are tearful, and the chests are
filled with depression. What is even stranger is that taleeq party Satan is killing the
honored party of Allah. Such hands are dripping with our blood; such mouths are feeding
on our flesh, while those scared and pure corpses are offered as food to the wild beast of
the desert and are dirtied by the brutes. If you regard us as your booty, you shall soon find
us as your opponents, that will be when you find nothing but what your hands had
committed, and your Lord never treats His servants unjustly. To Allah is my complaint,
and upon Him do I rely. So scheme what ever you wish to scheme, and carry out your
plots, and intensify your efforts, for by Allah, you shall never be able to kill our
inspiration, nor will your shame never be washed away. Your view shall be proven futile,
your days numbered, and your wealth wasted on the Day when caller calls out, "The
curse of Allah is upon the oppressors" (Qur’an 11:18). All praise is due to Allah, Lord of
the world, who sealed the life of our early ones with happiness and forgiveness, and that
of our last with martyrdom and mercy. We plead to Allah to complete His rewards for
them and grant them an increase and make succession good for us; he is the most
Merciful, the most compassionate. Allah suffices us, and how great He is!
Tied up with ropes, forced to ride saddle less, lean camels, and being in the utmost state
of humiliation, the harem and children of the prophet's family were taken to Syria.
Throughout their journey, they did not say a single word and did not ask anything from
the drivers of their caravan. Being close to Syria, the caravan stopped so that enough time
would be given to adorn the city with manifestations of festivity and to gather people to
witness this false victory of their ruler.
The caravan was about four parasangs away from Syria when its people received them
with joy, carrying drums and trumpets, and wearing their best dresses -all this was for
showing their delight for the massacre of the Prophet's family.
Intending to visit Jerusalem, I passed by Damascus, but it was different -the city was
exaggeratedly adorned with colourful gilding, its people were highly joyful, and their
women were playing tambourines and drums. I thought that people of Damascus had a
festivity that we did not have. Noticing some people talking secretly, I approached them
and asked,
They said, "Sahl, do you not think that it is very strange that the heavens are not raining
blood and the earth is not sinking with its inhabitants?"
“What for is that?" asked I. "All these are expecting the arrival of al-Hussain's (cut off)
head from Kufa," they revealed.
"How strange this is! The head of al-Hussain is being forwarded while people are
crowding cheeringly! From which gate will the head enter the city?" asked I.
As they pointed at the Gate of al-Sa't, I hurried there. A queue of banners began to enter,
but my eyes fell on a horseman who had in the hand a banner without a spearhead on
which lied a head most similar to that of the Holy Prophet [saww]. That was the head of
al-Hussain! On saddleless, lean camels, the captives appeared. As I reached one of the
captives ladies, I asked about her identity.
"I am Sukaynah daughter of al-Hussain," she replied. "And I am Sahl, the companion of
your grandfather the Messenger of Allah, ask for anything and I will do it for you," I
offered. Grievously, she asked, "Ask the bearer of al-Hussain's head to precede us for a
considerable distance so that people will look at head and ignore looking at us - the
family of the Messenger of Allah."
So, I ran towards that horseman, bribed him with four hundred dirham, and asked him to
hurry forwardly away from the captive ladies, and he did.
In that situation too, an old Syrian man leaning on a stick who was gloating at the
humility of those captives approached Imam 'Ali Zayn al-'Abidin (a) and said wreakfully,
"Praise be to Allah who eradicated you and empowered the emir to triumph over you."
Out of his keenness and perspicacity, the Imam noticed that the old man was deceived by
This statement shocked the old man who wondered and, thus, answered affirmatively.
The Imam [as] then asked him whether he had seen the following Quranic Verses: "Say: I
do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives. (16:26)" "And know
that whatever thing you gain, a fifth of it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for the
near relatives. (8:41)" Amazingly, the old man answered that he had recited these Verse.
The Imam [as] thus declared, "Only is it we who are intended in Allah's remark 'the near
relatives' in these Verses."
Furthermore, the Imam [as] asked the old man whether he had recited Allah's saying:
"Allah only desires to keep away the unclianness from you, O people of the House! and
to purify you a (thorough) purifying. (33:33)"
With astonishment, the old man answered that he had recited this Verse, too.
The Imam [as] hence said, "Only is it we who are the 'People of the House' whom
Almighty Allah has purified thoroughly."
This fact changed the old man completely and made him feel sorry for the days on which
he could not discern the reality of the Umayyad rulers and their authorities. Even his
tongue was tied up by the new fact; he therefore said to the Imam falteringly, "Please, tell
me by Allah! Is it you truly those ones?"
"Yes, it is, I swear it by our grandfather, the Messenger of Allah [Swt]," replied the Imam
[as] confidently.
Feeling sorry for the words that he first showered at the Imam [as], the old man threw
himself on the hands of the Imam [as] to kiss them heavily as signs of remorse, declaring,
"I disavow those who killed you."
A Syrian man who attended the session of Yazid looked at Lady Fatimah daughter of
Imam al-Hussain in captivity and said to Yazid, "Give this girl to me to serve me." As
she heard this shocking statement, the lady trembled and grabbed hold to her aunt's cloak.
Lady Zainab shouted at the Syrian man, "You, the mean one, have lied. Neither you nor
can even your leader (i.e. Yazid) do this." This statement enraged Yazid who said, "I
could if I would." Lady Zainab answered, "No, you can not do it unless you abandon our
religion and take another for yourself." As Yazid realized the big insult that Lady Zainab
targeted at him by these words, he shouted at her, "How dare you say such words in my
face? It was your father and your brother who abandoned the religion!"
The tyrant's rage decreased and he had to nod down meanwhile, the Syrian man repeated
his request, but Yazid shouted at him, "May Allah inflict upon you a swift death!"
Hence, Lady Zainab could control her self-power and self-will that she inherited from her
forefathers to face the tyrant and to triumph upon him.
Anyhow, the Syrian man's request was seemly the opening of a long articles of criticism
and reproach against Yazid and the beginning of the Syrian was not so dull, especially
after he had heard the reply of Lady Zainab [sa] that proved Yazid's having been
excluded from Islam if he would respond to the Syrian man's request. This proves that the
man only intended to disgrace Yazid.
O Zainab,
I am amazed at how strong you were.
Such a calamity you were a witness to.
You saw your children, your brother,
Your loved ones, All being so brutally massacred.
Everyone that was left behind, the orphans, the injured,
The sick and the widow, you had to be there for them
And you had to console them
But Oh Zainab,
Ya Ummul Masaaib
Who was there to console you?
Who was there to console you Ya Zainab?
