WITH WORD CARDS FOR SPELLING GAMES

This book contains enjoyable and interesting activities to give children extra practice in written and spoken language.

Working Together

Although your child is already able to read and write, it is still helpful, and much more fun, if you go through the book together.

Talk about the instructions before the child begins. Provide extra paper so that he or she

can repeat the exercise using different examples.

One way of making sure that a child has understood the work is to ask him or her to

set a similar exercise for you and then mark it.

Spelling Many of the activities are to help with spelling. One of the best ways of practising is called LOOK-SAY-COVER-WRITE- • CHECK. The child looks carefully at the word and says it aloud. Then he or she covers up the word and writes it. Finally the word is checked. Use this method for any words that your child finds difficult.

Remember that although English skills are very, very important, playing with language can be great fun, too!

PLEASE NOTE THAT IDEAS FOR THE GAMES ON THE CENTRE CARD ARE GIVEN

AT THE BACK OF THIS BOOK.

CAREFULLY PULL OUT THE CARD FROM THE CENTRE OF THE BOOK AND CUT UP INTO

24 DOUBLE-SIDED CARDS.

This will give you a blue pack or a yellow pack depending on which side you choose to use. There are eight groups of six words each. Each word contains a letter pattern that has been introduced in this book.

Game 1 Choose a pack (eg yellow) and place all the cards face down (blue side up). Ask your child to turn 2 cards over at a time and collect pairs with the same letter pattern.

Game 2 Choose a pack (eg blue) and place all the

cards face up (blue side up). Ask your child to make sets of 6 cards, each set having the same letter pattern.

When a set is complete use LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK to ensure that your child knows the words.

Game 3 Choose about twelve cards at random. Use these for a quick spelling test.

Encourage your child to make more sets of cards and to invent other spelling games.
