LABORATORY

The lab portion of this course will consist of 5 complete experiments spread throughout the
semester (some experiments may take more than one week to complete). A lab score of forty
(40) points will be assigned for each of the five experiments. A summary of how the 40 points
are distributed is given below;

Category Total Points Possible

Tardiness: Is student on time? On time=5 pts/Late=0 pts 5 points
Safety Procedures: Does student comply? Yes=5 pts/No=0 pts 5 points
Lab Participation: Points determined by instructor 5 points
Lab Report: Graded by Instructor 25 points
Summation 40 points

OCU policy on final exams will apply. I’ve posted it below for reference.

Final Examinations

Final examinations are held in all courses upon the completion of each semester’s or
term’s work. No one is to be excused from the final examinations. All classes will
meet during the time stipulated by the Registrar’s Office for final examinations.
Students who have three final examinations scheduled on the
same day may seek permission from either their instructors or their academic dean
to have one exam rescheduled for another day within final examination week.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

ATTENDANCE

I do my best to cover material in lecture that is helpful and instructive. I also work examples in class
that should assist you in completing your Assignments. Therefore, attendance during lecture is
strongly encouraged. If you know that you will miss lab, or lecture when an exam is scheduled, you
must contact me beforehand by phone and by e-mail. If your situation is such that it is not possible to
contact me beforehand, you must contact me as soon as possible afterwards and inform me of your
situation. Failure to follow these policies could result in your absence not being excused. If you need
to leave early, you must let me know at the beginning of lab or lecture. Attendance during exams is
mandatory. Attendance during Lab is mandatory.

MAKE-UP POLICY

In order to make up an exam, or lab, your absence must be excused. Whether or not your absence is
excused will be determined by me, in accordance with OCU policy. If your absence is not excused,
the score you receive on any exam, or lab, missed will be zero points. If your absence is excused, I
reserve the right to give you a make-up exam, or lab, which is different than the one you missed.
Due dates for each assignment and lab report will be announced in class at least
one week in advance (before they are due). No credit will be given for any
assignment or lab report turned in late.

ILLNESS AND EMERGENCIES

Absences due to illness and emergencies may count as excused. I understand and appreciate that
during an illness, or emergency, it can be quite difficult to fulfill all obligations. I do my best to help
students in these situations. It is still your responsibility to keep me informed of your situation at all
times, especially if you must miss an exam, or lab, due to an illness or an emergency. It is also your
responsibility to provide the documentation necessary to ensure that your absence is counted as
excused. The Make-Up Policy outlined above also applies for absences due to illness and absences
due to emergencies.

SANCTIONED UNIVERSITY EVENTS

If you are scheduled to miss an exam, or lab, due to a sanctioned university event, you must inform
me ahead of time to ensure that your absence is counted as excused. I also must receive a letter, from
the person in charge, which confirms your participation in the scheduled event. This letter can be sent
either by campus mail or by e-mail.

Cheating/Plagiarism Policy
a. The university’s academic honesty policy is published in the 2010-2011
undergraduate catalog (page 41) and graduate catalog (page 33).
b. The first time you are caught, you will receive a score of zero points on the exam, quiz, lab, lab
report, or assignment in which you were caught cheating or plagiarizing. The second time you are
caught, you will be expelled from the course.

Cell phone/Computer/Electronic Devices Policy

Be courteous to me and your fellow classmates. Turn off cell phones

and other personal devices during lecture and Lab. Use of
computers is not allowed during lecture or lab.

No electronic devices of any type are allowed during exams. The

only permissible items allowed during an exam are pencils and pens.

You may drink beverages during class but no eating allowed.

In general, I expect you to make an honest effort to do well in the course. I will do my
best to assist you. If you have any other questions feel free to bring them to my attention.

CLASS ANNOUNCEMENTS

Any announcements pertaining to this class will be made during lecture and also sent to
your OCU student e-mail address. I will not send class announcements to alternative e-
mails. You are responsible for checking your OCU e-mail to keep abreast of any
announcements or changes for this class. If class is to be cancelled, I will notify the
class, via your student OCU e-mail account, at least twelve (12) hours in advance.
GRADING

The following is the grading scale for this course.

Total Score Grade

880-1000 A
850-880 A-
820-850 B+
780-820 B
750-780 B-
720-750 C+
680-720 C
650-680 C-
620-650 D+
580-620 D
550-580 D-
000-550 F

The Total Score is determined by adding up your individual scores for all quizzes, exams,
assignments, and lab reports listed above; if your score is at the cutoff (for example, 880
points), you will receive the higher grade (For example, if you received exactly 880
points your grade would be an A, if you received exactly 750 points you would receive a
B-, etc.).

INCOMPLETE GRADE POLICY (see page 47 of the 2010-2011 Undergraduate

Catalog).

If a student is unable complete this course by the end of the semester, the Instructor has the option of
assigning a grade of "I" (Incomplete). An Incomplete grade gives the student additional time to complete
the course. In order to receive an Incomplete, the student must have: a legitimate and compelling reason
for not being able to complete the course by the end of the semester, no unexcused absences, a grade of "C"
or better at the time a grade of "I" is being considered. If a student fails to complete the course by the
deadline assigned by the Instructor, the grade of "I" will become an "F". If a student does complete the
course within the deadline assigned by the Instructor, the student's grade will be assigned according to the
grading scale above.
