The Fijian government commended China
for helping establish the first feed mill in the
island nation.
Lt. Colonel Mason Smith, permanent
secretary of Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture,
told media that engineers from China are
in Fiji to set up the country’s first feed mill
at the Koronivia Research Station, as a
response to the plight of livestock farmers.
According to the official, it will take
Chinese engineers two weeks to set up the
mill and another two weeks to train officials
of his ministry to operate it. The feed mill
would be commissioned in the third quarter
of the year.
“The mill will basically be able to produce
feed for all kinds of livestock like ducks,
goats, pigs, cattle and this will ensure that in
times of drought and flooding that we have
mill in store to be able to feed our livestock,”

Health and Production Unit (AH&P), said
that the mill was a major achievement
for the government in terms of providing
conducive environment to livestock.
“It is pretty expensive for farmers to buy
imported feed and we find that most of the
time if they use feed concentrate, the costs
of feed make up more than half the cost of
operating the farm,” Tunabuna said.
Local agricultural waste or by-products
like refuse from municipal markets and
sugar cane tops will be processed and
churned into feed pellets, according to
local media.
Fiji ready to assist Japan
with water
Following the recent earthquake and tsunami
that struck the North Eastern Coast of Japan
in the Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima areas, the
Minister of Foreign Affairs & International
Cooperation the Hon Ratu Inoke Kubuabola
had directed his ministry to explore ways in
which Fiji may be able to donate water to
these troubled areas of Japan.
The initiative follows the offer by Prime
Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to his
Japanese counterpart that Fiji was ready to
assist where needed.
A number of local companies that export
water overseas have responded positively
to the Minister’s initiative and confirmed
donation of eight (8) container loads of
bottled water worth FJD118, 000.00.
The companies that heeded the Minister’s
call were:
1. Natural Waters of Viti Ltd– Fiji Water
2. Pleass Beverage & Packaging – Aqua
Safe
3. Frezco Beverages Ltd – Aqua Pacific
4. Carpenters Fiji Ltd
In addition, Carpenters Shipping Ltd agreed
to ship free of charge the eight containers at a
cost of FJD24, 000.00 to Japan.
Fiji to maintain dalo exports
Fiji needs to maintain its dalo export
level to Australia and New Zealand
says Agriculture permanent secretary
Colonel Mason Smith.
Smith says there is now more competition
in the overseas dalo market.
He says Fiji exports 10,000 tonnes of dalo
a year and this has to be upheld.
“We have to ensure that that level of export
is maintained - given the fact that Samoa
has now recovered from the dalo blight
that affected them and other countries are

the following notification from the Embassy
of Japan, which stated:

received official information from Tokyo
about water supply being normalized.
The Prime Minister’s office of Japan
mentioned that the domestic logistics were
recovered and restored at the disaster area;
therefore, victims are getting enough water
now.
We appreciate the proposal from you and the
water suppliers to assist the victims and I’m
most grateful for your thoughtfulness.”
The Ministry wishes to acknowledge with
appreciation the ready willingness of Natural

Fiji produces 69,000 tonnes of dalo a year.

the purchase of other documentaries from
our file footage which is a treasure of history
dating back to colonial times.

Education Minister launches
free TVET textbooks
The Education Minister, Mr Filipe Bole launched
seven Technical and Vocational Education
Training textbooks on Monday.
These textbooks were distributed to secondary
schools in Fiji for free.
“This is a historic event and I am proud to be here
to witness it. Books are engines of change and
progress indeed for TVET because this is the first
batch of textbooks produced by the section for
free distribution to secondary school,” Mr Bole
said.

This was while visiting students during his
recent tour of Indonesia.
The Prime Minister accompanied by protocol

Lumpur city on the way to the residence of
the Fiji High Commissioner where Mr Suliasi
Lutubula and permanent secretary Savenaca
Kaunisela received and ushered Commodore
Bainimarama into the residence lounge where
about 50 students and Fijian Nationals met the
Prime Minister.
Commodore Bainimarama was received by
students, beginning with a church service
then followed by traditional Fijian welcome
ceremony of sevusevu.
In his response Commodore Bainimarama
thanked students, the mission and the Fijian
community for the warm reception, which
is a positive symbol of the unity and support
among Fiji Nationals in Kuala Lumpur towards
Government’s initiative such as the Ministry of
iTaukei Affairs scholarship awarded to the first
batch of 25 students studying in six Malaysian
Universities, two public and four private.
The Attorney- General and Minister for
Commerce Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
has reminded businesses to operate in a
transparent manner.
During the opening of the 10-days Nadi
Fiesta at Koroivolu Park in Nadi, Mr Sayed-
Khaiyum said there is a need to set up a
transparent system in order for businesses
to survive and thrive.
“It is imperative now that whenever we
run businesses, whenever chambers of
commerce operate, they need to operate in a
very transparent manner. The Bainimarama
Government in the past two or three years
has put in place a number of laws that has
not only modernized Fiji in terms of the
application of the laws but also in terms
of propelling us into the future,” Mr Sayed
Khaiyum said.
“It has also set in place a number of new
standards that we all have to adhere to. The
creation of FICAC is very much talked

he has learned from Mr Kaunisela, who had
discussions with the universities management
and students during his one week (April 4 to 8)

Prime Minister Bainimarama reiterated on the
outcome of his visit to the same group of students
in 2009 in respect of increased allowances which
came into force in the last quarter of 2009 and
restoration of salary for students who were on
study leave without pay.
Students who were still not being paid salary
were told the matter would be discussed with
their respective employers to ensure salaries
were restored accordingly to those concerned. In
return students expressed their heartfelt thanks to
the Honorable Prime Minister for the privilege
of meeting him face to face and an opportunity
to freely raise issues pertaining to government
scholarship policy and other related issues.
Students were reminded of their mission

E-ticketing to start soon
Officials from the Ministry of Education’s
transport assistance scheme taskforce are
in Vanua Levu to create awareness about
e-ticketing bus fare assistance, which will
come into effect from the next school term.
Principal Education officer (primary), Mr
Josateki Naisoro said they were creating
awareness on e-ticketing with some other
officials from Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL).
“We finished the awareness in the Suva,
Nasinu, Nausori, Ra, Ba, Tavua, Nadi,
Lautoka and Nadroga-Navosa schools
within last week. This week, we’ll be
visiting schools in Labasa and Savusavu.
We are just advising students on the usage
of the cards and what is involved,” Mr
Naisoro said.
“The bus fare assistance started in late
2009 with cash disbursed to schools and
last year coupons were introduced.
“Now, for the way forward, the ministry
is going to start the e-ticketing whereby
electronic cards will replace coupons in
selected schools initially.
“It is more user friendly. In 2009 we used
cash and in 2010 but now for the way
forward, we are looking at the e-ticketing.
The e-ticketing is also the use of cards with
the tab machines, as they call it. It’s like
a card we use for swapping in ATM or in
supermarkets.
“This assistance will start with urban
students who travel by bus. It will be for
selected urban schools. The schools have
been told that there’s a plan to move from

and principals’ seminars and visits to
schools.”
Mr Naisoro said that there was a plan for
the implementation of e-ticketing in May
but this would depend on how they worked
with TFL, Land Transport Authority and
the Transport Ministry.
To date, about 95,000 students from a
total of 706 schools have been covered
under the bus fare assistance scheme by
Government.
Mr Naisoro said for 2011, Government had
allocated a sum of $12m to help in the bus
fare provision for students.
“The budget total for bus fare assistance
is $12m. This $12m covers rural and
urban students. However, in the beginning
e-ticketing will not be for rural students or
those that use the RSL carriers or boats.
Initially, greater Suva and Lautoka areas
will be targeted. Funds for this e-ticketing
will come from the $12m given for bus fare
assistance scheme,” Mr Naisoro said.
The e-ticketing will be launched at the
Bus Operators Association annual general
meeting on April 30.
He added that at the end of the year, the
cards would be renewed through electronic
means.
Bus fare assistance scheme was introduced
in late October, 2009 to improve school
attendance and performance and help in
reducing the number of school dropouts.

Education Minister out to International Year of the Forest 2011

The commitment taken by the Education
Minister Mr Filipe Bole to visit six
secondary schools in Ra last week is being
commended by communities in the western
province.
The minister was accompanied by his
permanent secretary and senior officials of
the Ministry of Education.
The ministerial team’s main objective in
touring the secondary schools is to gauge
their capacity in absorbing students from
Class 8 when they move automatically
to Form 3 after the Fiji Eighth Year
Examination has been abolished
“We have even reminded schools run by
religious organisations not to be selective
of students coming in for Form 3,” said the
Minister for Education, Mr Filipe Bole.
The minister explained to communities in
Ra that examinations have contributed to
the early dropout of about 40 per cent of
students from the school system.
The ministerial team also assessed the needs
of schools in catering for an increase in the
Form 3 population.
“We admired the minister for his
commitment in coming over to schools to
see how we are coping with changes being
administered into the system,” said Ra High
School principal, Mr Saimoni Nalewabau.

chairwoman, Mrs. Nanise Nagusuca said
it was encouraging to have the minister
coming around in person to talk about the
initiatives of the Government through the
Ministry of Education.
The minister has been touring the country to
gauge the capacity of schools in absorbing
Form 3. He also promoted the school to
Form 7 level.
In his visits, the minister always put
across the Government’s expectation for
all children of school age to attend school
and for the children to reach the highest
education level offered in the secondary
school education.

in food prices across the region.
Samantha Cocco-Klein, from UNICEF’s

Until recently, I knew about the facts
but did not have official figures. I
knew banks have not been paying the
one time high rates and they are going
down but I did not have the idea how
bad it has been. Almost everybody
trusts the bank for their money and
they are the biggest collectors of funds
every year. Bank provides guaranteed
returns which no one else does except
the insurance companies. They have a
history of 1980 to 1989 backing them
but since 1990, they have come down
below 5% and to 1% and 2% today.
Korean banks will take your money
and guarantee the principal but will not
pay any interest on it. American and
European banks pay 1% to 2% return
and the same has now come here.
The following table is a tell-tale story.
Banks paid over 10% to 12% from
1983 to 1991. For a couple years, 1981
and 1982, the paid higher than 15% but
slid below 10% soon. For twenty years,
the interest rates have been lower. In
fact, the rates of return have been 5%
and lower. The worst scenario has
been in the last one year when the rates
have dipped below 1% and 2%. People
are getting worried about their future
because the inflation is going to be
higher than the return. The real value
of money will be lower each year. On
retirement, you would get less value
of the money from the bank than what
you put in.

and the mutual funds are a function

will fall for them and regret. Bank
mutual funds are a disaster. Study and
analyze bank mutual funds and you
will discover the truth. I have analyzed
them and convinced about their
uncertainty and low values.
Currently the markets have turned
up with better choices. They do not
offer guarantees but are secured by
assets. Some investments offer high
rate of return from the debentures of
up to 15% p.a. We know oil prices are
going to stay above the market. The
companies investing in oil are making
big money and will continue to do so.
For example, the value of crude oil may
be $12 to $18 per barrel but the refined
oil sells for $90 and higher. Real Estate
has made more millionaires than any
other industry. Now you do not need
huge amount of money. $25,000 will
be adequate to move in for big profits.
Have a meeting with a broker handling
these products and you will find him
more promising about the future. I
believe, he will offer you better choices.

to create an international economic
powerhouse without compromising its
sovereignty and independence.
“Since diplomatic ties were established,
we have witnessed steady development
of bilateral relationship, expanding
exchanges and cooperation in various
fields; not just technical areas but now as
we have seen in recent times, exchange
in the commercial and trade sectors.
“The Fijian government has a Look
North Policy which has meant that we
are looking more at the countries to the
North of Fiji which of course includes
China as a central focal point of our
Look North Policy.
“We have during this time also looked
at the dynamic growth that has taken
place in China and we want to be able to
participate in that dynamic growth that
you have.
“At the same time however, we believe
that we have opportunities for you to
be able to participate in the growth that
has taken place in Fiji over the past few
years, in particular with the reforms that
are taking place in Fiji.”
The 36 member Chinese delegation
include entrepreneurs from various
sectors including mining, tourism,

Fiji’s Law Society has welcomed the coup-
installed interim government’s plan to appoint
seven new magistrates.
The interim Attorney-General announced the
intention, following the resignation of three
Sri Lankan magistrates earlier this week.
Law Society president, Dorsami Naidu, says
the mass resignations are unfortunate.
“The unfortunate thing is when three
magistrates resign, the courts will be without
a magistrate for some time,” he said.
“I mean the magistracy been undermanned
anyway.”
According to Fiji’s Attorney-General Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum, Acting Chief Magistrate
Mr Pamila Ratnayake and two Presiding
Magistrates, Ms Kaweendra Nanayakkara
and Mr Lakmal Wickramasooriya resigned
for personal reasons.
The resignations bring the number of
magistrates remaining in Fiji to 15, out of a
possible 26.

foreigners.
“Five of these would-be Magistrates are
Fijians, one Australian and one New
Zealander,” he said.

NEW HEALTH LAW FOR GOVERNMENT WORKERS
All Ministry of Health workers will now
undergo compulsory medical screening and
tests before they can be re-contracted, with
new intakes also a target as the ministry
works at ensuring that staff are medically
and physically fit.
That directive has been given by Health
Minister Dr Neil Sharma.
“Too many health staff are obese and suffer
from risks of developing cardiovascular
diseases, hypertension and cancer,” Dr
Sharma said.
New intakes will also have to undergo the
medical tests.
“In recognition of the high incidences
of non-communicable diseases globally,
especially in the region including Fiji
specifically, the Ministry of Health is
introducing compulsory medical screening
for all staff at renewal of contracts,” Dr
More Chinese tourists
Fiji can capture a huge volume of the 50 million
tourists from the People’s Republic of China if
Destination Fiji is marketed more in the Asian
nation.
A 36 member Chinese delegation that comprises
both the Chinese private and public sectors is
currently touring Fijian economy one of which
is tourism.
Raymond Wu, an official of the China Council
for the Promotion of International Trade that
facilitated the delegation’s trip noted Fiji’s
uniqueness as a tourist destination.
He said the average Chinese was increasingly
amassing a higher level of disposable income.

beautiful views here and these will be very
interesting to Chinese tourists,” he said.
“Because now China people when they get rich
they start to go abroad for their vacations and
every year we have around 50 million tourists
going abroad so I think if they come to Fiji it will

Fiji Youths to explore ‘17th
Know India Program’
Four Fiji youths will be part of an international
youth forum known as the 17th Know India
Program to be held in Punjab and Goa next
week.
Alzima Bano, Dipika Kumari, Kormal
Devi and Parishika Sharma will represent
Fiji to the 13-day forum organized by the
Government of India’s Ministry of Overseas
Indian Affairs.
The theme of the forum is to promote
awareness on India, its socio-cultural
diversity and its emergence as an economic
powerhouse in the world today.
India’s High Commissioner Vinod Kumar
said the three-week program aims at the
Diasporas or youths of Indian ethnicity spread
out all over the globe, which will be given the
opportunity to feel and experience India.
“It will enable participants to have better
understanding about India and form a network
with other youths from all around the globe.”

Pacific ranked fattest region 11 killed in PNG tribal fighting

International health authorities are ranking
the Pacific as the region with the fattest
people in the world.
This is blamed on a shift from the traditional
diet based on local fish and vegetables to
imported cans of processed fatty food.
Fiji-based World Health Organisation

weight-related diseases are now responsible
for three-quarters of deaths in the region.

US air controller suspended
after watching film at work

A US air traffic controller has been
suspended for watching a film when he was
supposed to be monitoring aircraft, in the
wake of a series of reports of controllers
sleeping at work.
The incident occurred last Sunday at a
radar centre in Oberlin in Ohio, the Federal
Aviation Administration said.
The worker’s microphone inadvertently
transmitted the movie’s audio to all nearby
planes, the FAA said.
The FAA has suspended nine controllers
and supervisors since late March.
Former FAA chief Hank Krakowski, who
oversaw the day-to-day operations of
15,000 controllers at 400 airports, resigned
last week.
In the latest incident, the transmission of
the audio - from the 2007 movie Cleaner,
starring Samuel L Jackson - apparently
prevented the controller from hearing radio
calls or issuing instructions to aircraft.
The transmission to all aircraft in the
airspace the worker was supposed to be
monitoring lasted three minutes, the FAA
said in a statement on Monday.

“My husband and I were in awe, we were
like ‘Can you repeat that again?” Ms Gaul
said. “She said, ‘Frankly, I lost sense of
direction and didn’t realize I had operated
on the wrong eye until I was done operating

The Indo Fijian Easter conventions should
unite the people

Indo Fijian Conventions during Easter
Traditionally Easter has been a time for the
Christian community in Fiji to immerse in
prayers of the Lord and indulge in solemn
religious activities. On the other hand, in
a deeply religious Fiji with harmonious
interfaith activities, Indo Fijians of Hindu,
Sikh and Islamic faiths use this as a
sporting and social occasion where Indo
Fijian Diaspora from around the world
descend in Fiji in show of family, religious
and ethnic unity.
I have been advised by my Facebook
contacts in Fiji that this Easter, Gujaratis
are meeting in Rewa (Nausori), Sanatan at
Rishikul in Nasinu, TISI Sangam at Nadi,
Andhra Sangam in Rakiraki, Muslims in
Lautoka and Sikhs in my hometown of
Ba (Ba toh Ba hai -after all, Ba is Ba in
uniqueness). That basically covers all the
ethnic and religious dominations in the
Indo Fijian community. The whole country
would be swarming with NRIF – Non
Resident Indo Fijian. Consequently, no
rental cars would be available, most local
hotels are booked out and tourism from the
former residents with stronger dollars from
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA
will be a good boost for Fiji’s tourism and
economy.
While all the ethnic organisations are
unique and full of fun, joy and networking,
the unmistakable leaders of all the
gatherings is the TISI convention - Then
India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam representing
majority of descendents of girmitiya
(indentured) South Indians.
This is because despite representing a
minority ethnicity among Indo Fijians,
they are dominant in the extent, level and
professionalism of their organisation. They
are perhaps one of the most successful
ethnic organisations in Fiji. Unlike the
religious nature of Hindu, Sikh and Muslim
gatherings, the TISI is more about ethnicity
and South Indian ancestry. While most
are Sanatanis or Hindus, some are also
Christians or of other faiths, but all are free
to participate as long as they have South
Indian heritage. That is where the issue
gets somewhat controversial, especially in
the globalised world with migration of our
people.
Challenges for overseas affiliates
The problem and criticism that Sangam
has been facing is its male-oriented, some
may call it male chauvinistic conventions
where one is considered a South Indian
only through paternal links. I have a niece
who is married to a South Indian and her
husband attended a Sangam forum in
Brisbane that addressed the challenges the
overseas Sangam affiliates were facing,
which any ethnicity-based organisation
would face in the globalised village. He
saw the problems that an organisation like
Sangam faced where membership was
restricted to people who have a paternal
South Indian link. He felt that it would be
a bonus if our kids married a South Indian,
but this is not so and we could not continue
to have these groupings of socials/cultural
groups because the future generations may
not care and these organisations would die
a natural death.
History
I tried to explain him through historical
facts and linked these with the changes
our migrant community has faced. Most
early girmitiyas (indentured labourers)
were North Indians from Uttar Pardesh and
Bihar. Fewer numbers came from South
India. Because of language problems
and different look, they felt ridiculed and
discriminated by other Indians in those
dark days of girmit. Even the overseers
(koolambars) were harsh on them, many
went through greater difficulties. They
faced great hardship and difficulties even
post-girmit. Through all this developed
the Sangam, now TISI, to protect their
heritage. They have done a great deal more,
together with other girmit communities.
Even today they stand tall in ownership of

schools, temples, nursing school, the ability
to organise the convention in international
style, women’s groups, youth groups and
all facets of an ethnic organisation. I take
my hat for people like my dear friend and
class mate, Sada Sivan Naicker (originally
from Ba, but now) of Nasinu for his selfless
services to the community through TISI.
The advancement of Indo Fijians in
general and South Indians in particular
has now made the original purpose of

Now things have to change to attract the
younger generation not put off by too much
complicated and unexplained rituals and
restrictions placed by a past generation.
Sangam is not a religious grouping as most
are Sanatanis or Hindus. Sangam is an
ethnic group. That is why we have so many
South Indians playing in Sanatan Soccer
teams.
Discrimination defying international
laws
My friend Sada Sivan Naicker is married
to his high school sweet- heart, Sarita, who
happens to be a North Indian. Sada’s son
Nitesh can play in Sangam tournament
and is eligible for Sangam membership,
he is classed a “Madrasi” or South Indian
because his father, is a South Indian.
However, my nephew in Calgary, Melvin
Singh is married to Shristi Ryan who is a
South Indian. Melvin’s son is not eligible
to be a member of Sangam according to
Fiji rules and hence will not be able to
play in Sangam soccer, because while his
mother is South Indian, Melvin is North
Indian. Such gender discrimination which
goes against the spirit of human rights laws
of most progressive democracies where
our Diaspora has settled. This obviously
could be soon challenged in court in this
globalised world if Sangam does not come
to terms with the globalisation of Indo
Fijians in general, and “mixed” South
Indians in particular. This rule has to
change.
The advent of modern education,
westernisation and more liberal thinking
has led to many intermarriages and this will
cause problems for Sangam worldwide.
Hence Sangam should change this law
before they are classed as hypocrites

who adopt the good western ways,
opportunities and wealth of the first world
while embracing the third world gender
and ethnic discrimination.
So, TISI has to come to terms with this and
embrace international laws, as I am aware
of the displeasure and broken hearts such
draconian provisions are causing in Fiji.
The NRIF (Non Resident Indo Fijian), with
greater exposure to developed world may
find such restrictions and discriminations
abhorrent.
Perhaps it is time TISI heeded the message
that the retired International Judge and
Fiji’s statesman Hon Justice Jai Ram
Reddy gave during Sangam Convention in
2003:
Lest we forget, let us remind ourselves
once again that Sangam was conceived
in benevolence. The name itself stands
for coming together of people and the
participatory process that it entails. It was
born out of adversity that in times that were
equally dark. I Salute all those who have
persevered to keep the human values of
love, compassion and service alive through
Sangam. I urge you to work for the good
of all the people of this country. Sangam
has always given us a sense of security and
identity. DO not do anything to weaken
this organization. Take it from strength
to strength so that we can all be proud to
belong to the Sangam family.
Therefore the message for Sangam and all
other participants during Easter convention
is of coming together in this participatory
process to unite through human values of
love, and compassion.
It is ironical that while Commodore
Bainimarama’s vision for Fiji is a country
and its politics devoid of racism, the Indo
Fijians continue to discriminate their own
people based on gender and ethnicity. Hope
the spirit of love of Easter will prevail on
all of us and help us change.
Happy, fruitful and a blessed Easter to all
and hope we encounter more things that
unite us and fewer that divide us as the
people of Fiji.

Home Depot bans pets after
dog bites greeter’s nose
Big-box retailer Home Depot is moving to
ban pets from its Canadian stores after an
Ottawa-area employee had her nose bitten
by a Shih Tzu.
The company said Thursday it has
announced the ban at its stores across the
country and will implement the new policy
over the next few weeks in the interests of
employee and customer safety.
“We believe this is the best decision for
the shopping enjoyment and safety of
all customers,” the company said in a
statement.
No pets will be allowed in Home Depot’s
Canadian locations starting May 16, with
the exception of service animals.
The change in policy was announced after
Anne Riel, an employee at the Home Depot
store in Gloucester, east of Ottawa, was
bitten by a dog at work. She required seven
stitches in her nose, which will likely be
permanently disfigured from the incident.
Wednesday it’s in the process of notifying
226 patients who may have been exposed
to the infected worker.
“We did not find any breach of infection
control practices, so we don’t anticipate
there is any major risk, if any risk, to the
patients involved,” said Dr. Gerry Predy,
senior medical officer of health at AHS.
But the agency is notifying patients “in the
interest of being transparent,” he said.
The health care worker was present
during neurosurgery procedures in several
Edmonton operating rooms between July
1, 2006 and March 6, 2009.
A spokesperson for AHS said at the time,
the worker was unaware he or she had
contracted either virus. Former patients
were alerted about the situation after the
infected worker contacted AHS, which
then began a review to determine who may
have interacted with the person.

and had bent down to pet the woman’s Shih
Tzu, she said.
Bleeding for the bite, she was rushed to
hospital for emergency surgery, during
which doctors tried to repair a hole in her
nose. A part of her left nostril was also torn
apart and had to be re-closed.
“I’m going to have to get some legal
counseling,” she told the media on
Tuesday. “I’m not a nasty person by any
means, but my family’s been traumatized,
my kids are having a hard time. I’m in a
little bit of pain and the nose is never going
to look the same again.”
Riel said she will likely require “quite a
few” operations to fix her nose.”
The dog’s owner has been fined $610, and
the dog must now be muzzled.

Lamb Shanks in Lemon Sauce
Ingredients:
• 4 lamb shanks (about 3lb).
• 1 cup of water and ¼ cup of water.
• 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

Lamb Shoulder Braised With
Sherry And Citrus
Ingredients:
• 2 pounds (1 kilogram) boneless
lamb shoulder, trimmed of
fat and cut into cubes
• 2 tablespoons (30 ml) olive oil
• kosher salt to taste
• ground black pepper to taste
• 1 medium white onion, medium diced
• 4 stalks of celery, medium diced
• 4 cloves of garlic
• 2 tablespoons (25 ml) Dijon mustard
• 1 tablespoon (15 ml) liquid honey
• 1 teaspoon (5 ml) chili paste
• 1 cup (250 ml) chicken stock
• 1 cup (250 ml) dry sherry
• 1 each orange, lemon and lime,
using the zest and juice of each

Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 Cups blueberries
• 12 frozen tart shells
• 3/4 tsp Vanilla
• 1/3 Cup brown sugar

• 1 teaspoon of salt.
• 1 bay leaf.
• 1 large onion, finely chopped.
• 1 clove of garlic, minced.
Directions:
In a heavy casserole dish, brown the
lamb shanks, then push the lamb to
one side of the dish.
Add the chopped onion and minced
garlic; saute until soft.
Stir in 1 cup of water, lemon juice, bay
leaf and salt.
Cover and allow to simmer for 3 hours
or until tender.
Remove the meat and keep hot.
Blend the potato starch with ¼ cup of
water. Stir into the pan liquid.
Cook, stirring constantly, until the
gravy thickens and boils for 60
seconds.
Remove the bay leaf and serve.
Directions:
Heat pan. Add oil and cubed lamb.
Season with kosher salt and fresh
ground pepper. Sear until evenly
browned. Add onion, celery and
garlic cloves and continue to brown
for a few seconds until vegetables are
tender. Deglaze pan with sherry and
add all remaining ingredients. Bring
to a simmer on stove top. Cover and
place in 350 F (180 C) oven and
braise until lamb is very tender (about
60 to 90 minutes). Adjust seasoning
of braising liquid, if necessary.
Serve over steamed basmati rice and
garnish with chopped cashews and
fresh herbs.
• 1 tsp lemon juice
• 1 tbsp Flour
• 1 lightly beaten egg
• 1/2 Cup corn syrup
Directions:
Preheat oven.
Put tart shells in foil cups and keep it
on a baking sheet.
Beat the egg with syrup, juice and
vanilla in a large bowl.
Stir in sugar along with flour in another
bowl.
Divide blueberries among tart shells.
Fill each shell with egg mixture right
to top.
Bake it on the bottom until bubbly.
Cool and refrigerate.

Early pensions access ruled out

The decision comes amid a range of
reviews of the pensions landscape
The government has ruled out plans to let
people take money out of their pensions
when aged in their 30s.
It consulted on the idea of early access to
encourage more people to save for their
pensions, but has now abandoned the plan.
At the moment, only those who are older
than 55 can access their savings with a
company pension scheme.
An industry group has welcomed the
government’s alternative plan to make
workplace saving easier.
Incentive
The Department for Work and Pensions
estimates that around seven million
working-age people are currently not
saving enough for their retirement.
Some younger people are unhappy about
saving in a pension because it ties up the
money for a long time.
But the government concluded that there
was “limited evidence” that allowing
early access would prompt an increase
in overall pension saving, or provide
significant help to individuals facing
financial hardship.
It added that more upheaval was not
needed at a time when there was major
reform of private and workplace pensions.
Mark Hoban, financial secretary to
the Treasury, said that other ways to
encourage saving for retirement would be
considered.
“We will work with industry to develop
workplace saving to supplement pension
savings,” he said.
“In addition, we will explore other ways
of making pension tax rules simpler and
more flexible, for example by making it
easier to deal with small pension pots.”
Reaction
The decision was welcomed by the
National Association of Pension Funds
(NAPF), which represents 1,200
schemes.
“Letting people dip into their pensions
early would not have increased their
retirement income,” said Darren Philp,
NAPF director of policy.
“Instead it would have risked greater
dependency on the state pension, and
left pension providers in a bureaucratic
tangle.”
Mark Duke, of consultancy firm Towers
Watson, said: “People who do not want
to lock their money away can already
save in other vehicles first and benefit
from tax relief if and when they are ready
to commit to saving for retirement.
“This option could certainly be better
promoted but it does not require a change
in the law. We expect more employers to
think about whether they want to make
medium-term savings vehicles available
through the workplace.”

Canadians struggling to save: Survey

Nearly one-third of Canadians that
responded to a recent survey backed by a
major Canadian bank said they didn’t have
enough money to cover living expenses.
An online survey completed for TD Canada
Trust (TSX: TD) also found that 54 per cent
of the 1,003 people who answered said it
was a real struggle or impossible to save.
The report, released Wednesday, says
that 38 per cent of respondents said they
had no savings and 30 per cent said they
didn’t have enough money for their living
expenses.
On the flip side, 30 per cent of the
respondents said they had enough money
saved to cover living expenses for at least
four months.
The online survey, based on a representative
sample of Canadian adults, was conducted
before Christmas from Dec. 2 to 7 by
Environics Research for the bank.
TD used the survey results to publicize its
services for helping customers with their
savings.
The survey found the top goals for the
respondents were: saving for retirement
(73 per cent), paying off credit cards (72
per cent), and major purchases or vacations
(53 per cent each).
On a regional basis:
- 22 per cent of respondents in the
Atlantic Provinces said they found saving
“impossible” and 43 per cent indicated
any leftover money was being used to pay
down debt.
-54 per cent of respondents in Ontario
said they found it a “real struggle” or
impossible to save and 33 per cent said
they didn’t have enough money to cover
living expenses.
-33 per cent of respondents in
Saskatchewan and Manitoba indicated
it was a real struggle to save but a larger
portion (37 per cent) said they had enough
money saved to cover at least four months
of living expenses.
-55 per cent of respondents in Alberta
said it was a real struggle or impossible to
save but 31 per cent said they had enough
money saved to cover at least four months
of living expenses.
-44 per cent of respondents in British
Columbia said it was a real struggle or
impossible to save; 30 per cent said they
didn’t have enough money to cover living
expenses.

Calgary woman mistaken for future queen Kate

Calgary’s Kate Ryder is frequenty
mistaken for royal bride-to-be Kate
Middleton.
A Calgary woman who bears a striking
resemblance to royal bride-to-be Kate
Middleton says she is being stopped
by strangers at least a few times daily
because of it.
“I was at a function just last week, and
people were like, ‘What’s Kate Middleton
doing in the bathroom?’ “ said Kate Ryder,
a legal counsel, with a laugh.
And not only do the two women look
alike, they share the same first and middle
names -- Kate Elizabeth -- and age: 29.
“It’s just crazy. Random people will come
up to me when I’m walking to work and
be like, ‘Oh Jesus, I thought the future
queen of England was right there,’” she
said.
Ryder said she wasn’t keen on the royal
family before, but now looks to her
doppelganger for styling tips and will
likely watch the wedding on April 29.
But while Ryder has been getting a kick
out of the attention -- her husband Jon
took photos of her with her hair curled,
wearing a dress by Issa, the same designer
who did Middleton’s blue engagement
dress -- she has no plans to push it any
further.
“It seems like it would have been silly
to go to law school then become a Kate
Middleton lookalike, but we’ll see,” she
said. “You never know.”

How do I ... take my baby’s temperature?
While there are many acceptable ways to
take your child’s temperature, you should use
a rectal thermometer if you think that your
baby has a fever. To take a rectal temperature,
first wash and rinse the thermometer and
shake it until it is reading below 96 degrees F.
Next, rub a small amount of lubricant on its
tip and while your baby is lying down, hold
one of your hands firmly on his lower back,
just above his buttocks. Now gently insert
the thermometer into his anus about 1/2 to 1

What it looks like: Red welt that
throbs with pain, then settles into a
localized ache that lasts a few days.

Nadroga rules
Nadroga continues to beat on teams in the Masters
League. They walloped Rewa 5-0 in the second
round of the competition at Coast Meridian
Ground in Surrey last weekend.
With 3 games, Nadroga leads the division with 9
points, 10 goals for and 2 against.
The Fiji Times Fiji Fact tournament champions
have taken a determined approach and are hopeful
to better their overall standing this season.
They finished second to Nadi in the league and the
Presidents cup last year.
Nadroga’s midweek win against Navua 3-1
last week gives them one game advantage over
archrivals Nadi and Samabula.
Sitting at second spot is Samabula with 2 wins,
10 goals for and 1 against for a total of 6 points.
A marginal 3-0 win over Naitasiri has Joseph
Chetty’s side a slight edge on his former team
Nadi.
Closely following them is last year’s League and
Presidents cup champions Nadi, with a record of 2
wins, 11 goals for and 3 against for 6 points. In the
actions last weekend Nadroga, Nadi and Navua
scored huge wins.
Nadroga without their top striker, Dave Griffith,
did remarkably well as the subs had the knack for
the net.
Inform strikers, Vishwa Sharma and Richard
Singh stood up the call while Midfielder Jiten
Prasad provided power from the midfield engine
room.
He played some quality balls to his intended
strikers.
The Nadi – Lautoka match turned out to be lopped
sided.
The Green Machine schooled Lautoka 7-2.
Midfielder Abilesh Singh dictated terms from
midfield, he controlled much of Nadi’s plays.
He continues to impress his Coach Raj Lal.
Singh scored a beauty in the first half, a
powerful drive from over 30 yards out. He had
a hand in 4 assists.
Defender Kartik Ravinesh played a solid game
in defence.
Ravinesh thwarted away Lautoka attacks with
ease. Making a comeback to Nadi was former
Rewa district player Afroz Khan. Khan was an
instant fit in the side. He scored on a half volley
from over 40 yards out.
In the Navua-Suva match, despite an early
goal from Suva, Navua turned on instant heat
outplaying them in all areas.
The Pramod Chohan led side scored 6 goals
during the course of the game. Striker Neil
Adrakar was Suva’s worst nightmare, a constant
harass to Suva defense.
He looked dangerously good.
Tavua is yet to find its niche, though
convincingly beat newcomers Labasa 5-0.
Returning for the club was veteran striker Riaz
Ali Akhtar (Peneasi). The former Tavua district
player (Fiji) said after the game he still has in
him a few more years of Masters Soccer.
Nasinu cruised to a 3-0 win over Ba. Former Ba
players, Dan Ram, Rajneel Prasad and Ashwin
Kumar featured for the side. Defender Mun
Reddy was at his usual best at sweeper backs

Vancouver has given the green light
on free agency Wednesday before team
delegates at a special meeting in Surrey.
The motion was voted 10-7 in favor. All
players can now exercise unrestricted
free movements and sign for any district
of their liking.
“This is a huge policy change. This
brings to an end of an age-old tradition.
It’s a past history. We’ll have to wait
and see if this makes any sense,” said
one district official that opposed the
change.
He said it’s a no brainer to remove the
restrictions on players.
The FSLGV has for some time
sounding off the change for the 2 major
tournaments, the IDC and the BOG.
“These tournaments have always been
about pride less prize for many.”
Some suggested that the Fiji style of
IDC would fit today’s demand, where
players must be left with choice as to
who they want to play for. Some angry
proponents down played this notion.
“Going back to Fiji style of soccer.
What’s good about them,” said former
Lautoka soccer player Anand Krishna.
He reminds, without import players in
Fiji, Ba, the traditional soccer giants
have proved what others have failed.
Another argued a lot of money is at
stake in Fiji and it might not be an ideal
situation in this League.
“It totally defeats the Inter District
purpose. It would starve the already
weak districts and make contenders feel
the migration,” he said.
“They should consider a name change
to the tournament.
Krishna said some teams would start to
lure players with cash incentives while
others would tag along their buddies to
strengthen a team.
It was rumored that just about all
officials of the association had wanted
the change to alleviate the workload.
One source said Wednesday, that the
association had openly campaigned for
the change.
Krishna said all they needed was a seal
of approval Wednesday.

Nicklas Lidstrom and Tampa Bay Lightning
right-winger Martin St. Louis are the three
finalists for the 2010-11 Lady Byng Memorial
Trophy.
The trophy is awarded to the player adjudged to
have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship
and gentlemanly conduct combined with a
high standard of playing ability.
The winner will be announced on June 22
during the 2011 NHL awards in Las Vegas.
Eriksson, 25, led the Stars with 10 power-play
goals and six game-winning goals and had a
career-high 73 points. Eriksson had only eight
minutes in penalties.
Lidstrom is a Lady Byng finalist for the sixth
time in his career. He has never won the trophy,
finishing second or third in the voting for five
consecutive years from 1999 through 2003.
Lidstrom, 40, ranked second among NHL
defencemen in scoring with 62 points while
collecting only 20 penalty minutes.
St. Louis joins Lidstrom as a six-time finalist,
all in the past seven seasons; he captured
the award for the first time last season. The
35-year-old finished second in NHL scoring
with 99 points and was assessed just 12
minutes in penalties, matching his career low
set last year.

Mike Gillis named finalist for NHL’s top
GM award
Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis.
The Vancouver Canucks were the darlings of
the NHL during the regular season, and now
the architect behind the team is hoping to take
a bow.
Canucks general manager Mike Gillis, who
saw his club post a franchise-record 117 points,
was named Wednesday as a finalist for the
National Hockey League’s top general manager
award, along with David Poile of the Nashville
Predators and Steve Yzerman of the Tampa Bay
Lightning.
The winner of the award, which is based on
voting by the league’s 30 general managers,
along with print and broadcast media, and a
panel of NHL executives, will be announced
June 22 in Las Vegas.
Gillis, who was hired in 2008, helped the
Canucks win the Northwest Division title for the
third straight year. With off-season acquisitions
of centre Manny Malhotra and defencemen
Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis, the Canucks
posted a 54-19-9 record this season and allowed
the fewest goals in the league.
Yzerman, meanwhile, fell short in his bid to
win the NHL’s rookie of the year honours back
in 1984, but the former Detroit Red Wings
star is hoping to land the top GM honours
as a rookie. The Tampa Bay Lightning boss,
who was hired last May, saw his club make a
23-point improvement over last season, as the
Bolts posted a 46-25-11 mark, which is the
second-best mark in franchise history.
He hired Guy Boucher as head coach, then
added veterans such as defencemen Pavel
Kubina and Eric Brewer, along with forward
Simon Gagne and goaltender Dwayne
Roloson. Tampa Bay earned a playoff berth for
the first time since 2007.

All Untelevised UFC 129 Prelims to Stream Live on Facebook
All five UFC 129 preliminary contests not
shown on television will stream live on social
networking site Facebook prior to the event’s
pay-per-view broadcast, the promotion
announced late Wednesday night.
UFC 129 goes down April 30 at Rogers Centre
in Toronto. Headlined by a welterweight title
clash between reigning champion Georges St.
Pierre and challenger Jake Shields, the event is
expected to host more than 55,000 fans and earn
a live gate in excess of $10 million.
In addition to the main event, the show
will also feature a featherweight title bout
between titleholder Jose Aldo and hometown
favorite Mark Hominick. UFC 129 marks the
promotion’s first trip to Ontario and may also go
down as the site of Randy Couture’s last fight,
as “The Natural” squares off with fellow former

can show it on the stage in the cage.”
The stage will be a big one in Toronto with the
UFC reportedly selling 55,000 tickets for the
event. If an enormous audience isn’t enough

Vancouver Whitecaps FC begin their quest to
win the Voyageurs Cup for the first time when
they visit arch-rivals Montreal Impact in the first
leg of their Nutrilite Canadian Championship
semifinal series next Wednesday.
Stade Saputo in Montreal, Quebec, will be the
venue for next week’s important first leg, as
Whitecaps FC make their fourth appearance
in the competition since its inception in 2008,
though this will be the first time they contest
the Voyageurs Cup as a Major League Soccer
club. The decisive second leg will take place at
Empire Field the following Wednesday, May 4.
The 2011 edition also sees an expanded and
modified format to the competition following
the inclusion of FC Edmonton, who along
with the Impact, play in the second-tier North
American Soccer League (NASL). Two-time
Voyageurs Cup holders Toronto FC are the
top seed this year and will face newcomers
FC Edmonton in one two-leg semifinal, while
second-seeded Vancouver and third-seeded
Montreal contest the other two-match semifinal
series. FC Edmonton will host Toronto FC in
the first leg at Commonwealth Stadium next
Wednesday, April 27, before TFC host the
second leg with their Alberta-based outfit at
BMO Field on Wednesday, May 4.
The semifinal winners will then contest the final

lightweights Mark Bocek and Ben Henderson.
The Facebook stream will showcase a myriad
of weight classes, ranging from 135 to 185
pounds. At bantamweight, Ivan Menjivar will

Also scheduled for the stream is a lightweight

The Spike TV “UFC Prelims Live” special,
which airs after the Facebook stream and one
hour prior to the pay-per-view broadcast, will
feature a pair of welterweight tilts pitting Nate
Diaz against Rory MacDonald and Sean Pierson
against Jake Ellenberger.

When the noise is deafening, can

entertainment genres have become
a fixture in Hollywood over the last
15 odd years. Oddball, off the wall
comedy sometimes works but often
misses the mark. Director David
Gordon Green uses all that wit
he honed helming The Pineapple
Express to come up with a pretty
good send-up of all those knight
tales of centuries gone by. Aided
(and abetted) by a witty script by
co-star Danny McBride (Due Date)
Your Highness works surprisingly
well.
Fresh is good and our story begins
with a twist right from the opening
moments. Done up in a fairly tale
stale Your Highness has all the
familiar elements so common in
those swashbuckling epics of years
gone by. There are the damsels
in distress, evil villains and oh so
clever knights in shining armour.
Only here things are spiced up
considerably as adult dialogue
dominates the proceedings.
Clashes occur often in this sly 102
minute comedy. Hardly raunchy
the juicy situations and double
entendres flow mercilessly as we
bear witness to a power struggle in
a medieval kingdom. Who will rule
the day is the ultimate question with
two sons vying for control of their
father’s kingdom. Young Fabious is,
as the name suggests, handsome and
the love of all citizenry while older

to be having a good time poking fun
at each other and their character.
The overall tone of this film is so
over the top it works beautifully,
especially if you have an open mind
and don’t object to swearing, which
is sprinkled liberally throughout this
piece.

Getting Around in Fiji

An idyllic tropical paradise, vacationing in
Fiji is the perfect getaway for many. With
over 300 islands, it is easy to get lost on the
many isolated beaches found out here, far
away from the humdrum and bustle of city
life. Getting around Fiji is not that difficult
as the local and inter-island transportation
network is good and affordable as well.
From express bus services to taxis, rental
cars and bike companies, inter-island
ferry services, helicopter services and two
domestic airlines, traveling around Fiji is
actually quite easy.
If you are short on time and want to see the
best that Fiji has to offer, internal airline,
which are reliable and regular. Air Fiji and
Sun Air have daily flights to most of the
major Fiji islands, flying to the Mamanucas,
the Yasawas, Savusavu, Labasa, Mateo,
Vunisea and Bureta every day. Many other
smaller islands also have landing strips. If
you wish to visit the outer islands such as
Gau, Moala, Rotuma, Koro, Valua Balavu
or Lakeba, you need permission to visit, as
it is illegal to show up uninvited.
Air Fiji operates out of Nausori, while Sun
Air’s head offices are located at the Nadi
International Airport. Both these airlines
have similar prices for their routes, but
keep in mind that inter-island flights are by
light plane only.
For those with plenty of time on their hands
getting around Fiji by boat is amazing, with
ferry services linking Viti Levu to all the
other island groups. These ferries not only
carry passengers, but cargo and vehicles
as well and sell food, snacks and drinks
aboard. The only downside to traveling by
ferry is that a proper time schedule is not
followed and most boats do not leave or
arrive at the appointed hour. This can be
especially difficult if you are hard pressed
for time.
On the larger islands, the public transport
is quite good, with buses, minibuses
and carriers the ideal way to get around
and mingle with the locals. Cheap and
inexpensive, you can find bus stations in
most downtown areas. Taxis are also a good
way to travel around Viti Levu, Taveuni,
Vanua Levu and Ovalau and see the sights.
However, before you get in, make sure you
agree on a fare. Sharing taxis and cabs with
other people is an effective way of keeping
the price down. Taxis can be found at the
taxi depot in the main towns, or just have
your hotel ring one up for you.
If you are the adventurous type, renting a
car, motorcycle or bicycle is a wonderful
to get around as it lets you take in the
surrounding areas at your own pace and
time. Rental cars are expensive in Fiji,
but they are worth it if you happen to be
here with your family. Avis, Budget and
Hertz are among the popular rent-a car
companies. If you plan on driving in Fiji
a valid license is required, otherwise you
will have to get an international driving
permit. Keep in mind that here you have to
drive on the left side of the road.

How to fly with children

But the fact is today’s range of budget
airfares makes flying a cheap and
convenient option for many families.
So how can we negotiate check-in desks,

enjoy stress-free air travel with children
under school age?
Author Julie Warner, whose specialty
is travel guide books for families, has
visited 14 countries with her children,
now aged nine and seven.
Last year they took a five-week trip to
five countries, requiring 18 flights. The
secret is planning: know where you are
going and be selective when packing.
“It is possible to keep travelling like you
did before you had children, but I can’t
over-emphasize pre-trip planning - you
have to be super-organised,” Warner
says.
Here are a few tried-and-tested tips for
travelling by air with children under six:

Eating 3 bananas a day
could ‘slash stroke risk by
21 per cent’
British and Italian researchers have
found that eating three bananas cuts
the risk of a stroke.
They said that having one banana for
breakfast, one for lunch and one in
the evening would provide enough
potassium to reduce the chances of
suffering a blood clot on the brain by
around 21 per cent.
The findings suggest that thousands
of strokes could be prevented by the
consumption of other potassium-rich
foods such as spinach, nuts, milk, fish
and lentils, reports say.
Although some previous studies have
suggested bananas could be important
for controlling blood pressure and
preventing strokes, results have not
always been consistent.

among survivors of breast cancer.
Researchers investigated the association
between soy food intake and breast
cancer outcomes among survivors,
using data from a multi-institution
collaborative study, the After Breast
Cancer Pooling Project.
“There has been widespread concern
about the safety of soy food for women
with breast cancer,” said lead researcher
Xiao Ou Shu, professor of medicine
at Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center,
Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“Soy foods contain large amounts of
isoflavones that are known to bind
to estrogen receptors and have both
estrogen-like and anti-estrogenic
effects.
“There are concerns that isoflavones
may increase the risk of cancer
recurrence among breast cancer patients
because they have low estrogen levels
due to cancer treatment.
“We’re particularly concerned that
isoflavones may compromise the effect
of tamoxifen on breast cancer treatment

compared to those who had the lowest
intake level.
“Our results indicate it may be beneficial
for women to include soy food as part
of a healthy diet, even if they have had
breast cancer,” said Shu.
Eating fish can reduce
blindness risk by half
Eating fish just once or twice a week
could reduce the risk of suffering
from the most common form of
blindness by nearly half.
Research shows that eating omega-3
fatty acids, most commonly found
in tinned salmon and tuna, can help
prevent the onset of age-related
macular degeneration (AMD), a
condition that leads to the gradual loss
of vision.
This finding backs up previous research
which showed similar results in men.
Mixture of energy drinks
with alcohol is riskier
than alcohol alone
Energy drinks mixed with alcohol,
such as Red Bull and vodka, have
become trendy, but a new laboratory
study has found that the mixture is
riskier than drinking alcohol alone.
The study compared measures of
intoxication due to alcohol alone versus
alcohol/energy drink, and found that the
combination of the energy drink enhanced
feelings of stimulation in participants.
However, the energy drink did not change
the level of impairment for impulsive
behaviour. These findings suggest that
energy drinks combined with alcohol may
increase the risks associated with drinking.
“Young people are now drinking alcohol in
different ways than they have in the past,”
Cecile A. Marczinski, assistant professor
of psychology at Northern Kentucky
University and first author of the study, said.
“Classic mixed drinks such as rum and
coke have been replaced with mixed
drinks that use energy drinks instead,
such as yagerbombs and Red Bull and
vodka,” Marczinski said.
Amelia M. Arria, director of the Center
on Young Adult Health and Development
at the University of Maryland School of
Public Health said there is insufficient
data to support the growing concern.
“We have sales data showing that energy
drinks have gained in popularity, and we
know anecdotally that this practice is
popular, but we have little data on objective
and subjective responses that support
growing concern about the safety of mixing
energy drinks with alcohol,” she said.
Marczinski agreed, saying that while
consuming energy drinks with alcohol is
thought of as a risky drinking practice,
the laboratory evidence demonstrating
this is quite limited.
“In fact, most of the evidence that consuming
alcohol/energy drinks is risky comes from
epidemiological studies that have reported
an increased risk of accidents and injuries
associated with their use,” she said.

“This lower risk appeared to be due,
primarily, to consumption of canned
tuna fish and dark-meat fish,” said
Christen.
The disease, which mainly affects
people over 40, robs sufferers of their
sight by creating a black spot in the
centre of their vision which slowly gets

With the number of AMD sufferers
expected to treble in the next 25 years
as the population ages, there is an
urgent need for a breakthrough.
“However, those studies do not address
the key confound that risky drinkers,
who are prone to drinking heavily
anyways, are just attracted to these
drinks since they are trendy.
“Our study was designed to demonstrate that
alcohol/energy drinks are pharmacologically
distinct from alcohol alone and are adding
to the risks of drinking,” she stated.
Marczinski and her colleagues randomly
assigned 56 college student participants
(28 men, 28 women), between the ages
of 21 and 33, to one of four groups that
received four different doses: 0.65 g/kg
alcohol, 3.57 ml/kg energy drink, energy
drink/alcohol, or a placebo beverage.
The participants’’ behaviour was
measured on a task that measures how
quickly one can execute and suppress
actions following the dose.
Participants also rated how they felt,
including feelings of stimulation, sedation,
impairment, and levels of intoxication.
“We found that an energy drink alters the
reaction to alcohol that a drinker experiences
when compared to a drinker that consumed
alcohol alone,” Marczinski said.
“A consumer of alcohol, with or without
the energy drink, acts impulsively
compared to when they had not consumed
alcohol. However, the consumer of the
alcohol/energy drink felt more stimulated
compared to an alcohol-alone consumer.
“Therefore, consumption of an energy
drink combined with alcohol sets up a
risky scenario for the drinker due to this
enhanced feeling of stimulation and high
impulsivity levels.
“The findings from this study provide
concrete laboratory evidence that the
mixture of energy drinks with alcohol is
riskier than alcohol alone.
“College students need to be aware of the
risks of these beverages. Moreover, clinicians
who are working with risky drinkers will
need to try and steer their clients away from
these beverages,” she added.

Australia deports Clifford
Tucker to UK over crimes
A British man is being deported to the
UK from Australia, where he has lived for
more than 40 years, because of his criminal
record.
Clifford Tucker, 47, has been expelled
after the Australian government cancelled
his visa over a series of crimes, including
attempted murder.
Officials said the father-of-three posed an
“unacceptable risk of harm”.
His family emigrated when he was six but
he never became a citizen.
As a teenager, Tucker was jailed for 12
years for shooting and seriously wounding
a police officer.
Issues over his visa first came to light in

JETSTAR worked to get 2000 stranded
passengers on their way after a security
lapse at Sydney Airport caused a
disastrous shutdown.
A power failure caused a security
screening checkpoint in the T2 terminal to
malfunction at 3.15pm Tuesday, leading
to 16 passengers walking through without
being screened.
Sydney Airport ordered the re-screening of
the entire terminal, including many of those
already on board aircraft waiting to take off.
Virgin Blue, Tiger Airways, Jetstar and
QantasLink flights were all affected.
The delays and impending curfews resulted
in the cancellation of 15 Jetstar flights
headed to Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane,
Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
The airline issued a statement saying it
will work on Wednesday to get affected
passengers to their intended destinations.
“Jetstar is endeavoring to have all disrupted

assault.
“The only reason I came to their attention
was because I went to Bali and because
I voluntarily told them I had a criminal
history.”
He told the paper he was “completely
shattered” to be leaving his children, aged
16, 15 and 12.

“If he’s a ratbag, he’s one of our ratbags.
He’s done the crimes and he’s paid for
the crimes. This is quite an inhumane
punishment, far beyond the treatment he
deserves.”

government takes very seriously its role in
protecting the Australian community from
unacceptable risk of harm from criminal or
other serious conduct by non-citizens.
“The decision to cancel a visa is not taken
lightly and balances the protection of the
Australian community with a range of
factors, including the length of time in
Australia, family and links to the Australian
community.”

everyone off. Seems like an odd time for
indecision,’’ one passenger tweeted.

Massive queues.’’

than London, Paris
FEELING crowded? Latest figures
reveal Sydney has a higher population
density than Paris, London, Mexico City
or Los Angeles.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has
found Sydney is booming, with two-thirds
of NSW’s population now living in the city.
It has the highest density in Australia with
8800 people per sq km in Sydney’s east
and 7900 in the Western Suburbs.

horror as four men slaughtered a pig at
the Geelong sale yards just moments after
buying it, witnesses say.
The City of Greater Geelong has investigated
the incident, which left onlookers Jarrod

people each year, followed by Parramatta
with 5100 and Sydney City, with 4500.
All 43 council areas increased in population
with the five fastest-growing led by Canada
Bay (3.7 per cent).
The only area in NSW to have a population
fall was the far west, which lost 130 people.
The inland districts of Murray, North
Western, and Murrumbidgee all recorded
growth rates below 1 per cent.
