On Christmas Night
World Premiere Composed and Conducted by Bob Chilcott
Preparations continue for the world premiere of On Christmas Night by celebrated British choral
composer Bob Chilcott. Mr. Chilcott will be our guest for the final rehearsals and to conduct the
premiere’s two performances on December 12, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.
The work is a sequence of music and readings for the festive season which combines new
arrangements of well-known and well-loved carols with some newly-composed Christmas carols.
It was commissioned by and written for University Christian Church, thanks to a generous
bequest from the Estate of Roy Cates, and the work will be in memory of Dr. Lawrence W. Bash,
Senior Minister at UCC from 1949 to 1959.
In addition to the performances, we will have several wonderful opportunities to visit with Mr.
Chilcott. Question and answer sessions with this engaging and well-known composer are
scheduled 45 minutes prior to both performances, and receptions will also follow both in the
Fellowship Hall.
We have received the music for On Christmas Night, and it is lovely. The choir has begun
rehearsing it, and the choreographer has begun her work on the choreography for the dancers
and pageant participants.
The Endowment for Creative Ministry has graciously and generously agreed to support the
advertising of the performances. The Communications Council, working with the Chilcott
Commission Committee – Mary Lu Johnston, Sue Moss, Cathie Parsley, Nancy
Schuele, Gaye Lynn Scott, Joan Snodgrass, and Rhonda Watson – has been formulating
an advertising plan that will reach audiences in Austin and Central Texas for whom On
Christmas Night and Mr. Chilcott’s appearance will have great appeal. Also, substantial
outreach is being made to the Austin and area Disciples congregations, the Micah 6
congregations, and the Austin and Round Rock schools, and an advertisement for the
performances has already appeared in the program for the recent Texas Choral Directors
Association convention in San Antonio, which was
attended by 2,500 people.
Tickets for the performances are now available by
calling or emailing the church office. They are free,
but will be required for admission. Childcare will be
provided for both performances.
We anticipate that On Christmas Night and Mr.
Chilcott’s presence here to conduct the premiere will
draw many visitors to the church. There also will be a
number of opportunities for members of the
congregation to meet him and to help as the event
draws closer.
The Christmas 2010 season will be a thrilling and
historic one for UCC. We will be welcoming one of the
most gifted and prolific choral composers of the day to
UCC to conduct a work he has written especially for
us, and we hope you will mark your calendars and be
present on December 12 for this very special musical
occasion!

CONGREGATIONAL NEWS
From the Eckols family:
We want to extend our thanks to the many members of University Christian Church who
offered us their sympathy and their help during the days surrounding Ruth’s death.
Thanks to those who set up the reception following the ceremony and provided the
refreshments. Thanks also for the sack lunches provided for the trip out to the cemetery.
The members of this church have long been a source of support for the Eckols family,
especially during Ruth’s lengthy struggle with her illness, and we are grateful for your
presence and your prayers.
Sincerely, Nancy Eckols Bessent, Robert Eckols, Margarita Quihuis, and Benjamin Eckols
Welcome to Judy and David Kellog. They joined UCC on August 15. David
has been active in the Disciples of Christ church for many years, and Judy is a
lifelong (fourth generation) member of our denomination. They come to us from
the Arlington (TX) area and are returning to Austin, where they met – just
across the street from UCC – fifty-two years ago.
Welcome New Choir Members: Laura Martin, Eric Johnson and Juan Zavala. They are all music
majors at UT.
Congratulations to the Clinger family on the birth of Reece Anderson Clinger on
August 18 to Janet and Justin Clinger (and sister Avery). She is the sixth great
grandchild of Charles and Mary Lynn Clinger.

planning our meetings for the year and selecting a new "leader".
Patrick Scott has been invited to participate in the UCC (Ft. Worth) prestigious Bell Tower Series.
He will be performing an organ concert at UCC (Ft. Worth) on October 8 at 7:30. Congratulations
to Patrick on this honor!
CHARLES W. PETYON
Charles W. Peyton passed away on July 24th at the age of 94. Charles was a lifelong
member of the Christian Church (DoC) and charter member of Alamo Heights Christian
Church in San Antonio. He was also treasurer of Disciples for the Mentally Ill (DOMI) for
six years. He and his wife Elizabeth (Libb) joined UCC in 1983. Charlie served in
several positions at UCC, including as a greeter for almost a decade, and was made a Life
Elder in 1992. His easy smile and laugh, his warm and friendly sense of humor, and his
keen interest in fellow church members made Charles a wonderful ambassador for the
church. Even in recent years when Charlie was not able to attend church regularly, he took
pleasure in keeping up with church member news.
Charlie worked in Chief Management Engineering for the Fourth U.S. Army for twenty years and was awarded
the Army’s second highest decoration, the Meritorious Civilian Service award. Charlie is survived by his
daughter and son-in-law Charlene and Jay Mckinnon, son and daughter-in-law Tom and Patty Peyton, a
niece and nephews, eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren, as well as his
caregivers Candy and Darlene, and his dogs Popeye and Dozier. Charlie’s wish was to be remembered by the
way he lived his relationships with those who knew him. A memorial service will be held on September 18 at
UCC.
