Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner:
Several years ago, we sent you or the previous owner of record a letter, advising you about our "trap
oxidizer" exchange or extended warranty policy.
Basically, for owners of certain 1985 Model Year cars it specified a 30,000 mile exchange interval, and
for owners of certain 1986 and 1987 Model Year cars it extended our warranty indefinitely.
We are happy to inform you that we now have a replacement device with sufficient durability, therefore
replacements of the trap oxidizer will no longer be necessary. The replacement device, known as:
"oxidation catalyst", is standard equipment on our newest Diesel models.
Please continue driving your car as usual, i.e. until you reach the mileage at which your next trap
oxidizer replacement would be due, or until you schedule your next regular service. At that time, make
an appointment with your local authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, and instead of replacing the trap
oxidizer, an oxidation catalyst will be installed. Subsequent periodic exchanges of the oxidation catalyst
will not be necessary. Please remember that failure to have the trap oxidizer replaced as required could
cause substantial engine damage. Thus, it is very important to bring in your vehicle on the
recommended exchange interval or your next scheduled service to have an oxidation catalyst installed.
The oxidation catalyst is covered by the Limited Service Parts and Accessory Limited Warranty for 12
months unlimited mileage. For further details regarding this warranty, please contact your authorized
Mercedes-Benz dealer.
Sincerely,
Harold D. Whiteford
Vice President Operations
