Phone: 1-(860)-489-4137 Pastor: Rev. Daniel Bossidy May 2011 Dear Friend, Warm Christian greetings to you from everyone at the Full Gospel Lighthouse Church in Torrington, CT. It’s wonderful to know that the Lord has called each of us to repentance and faith in Christ Jesus our Lord! When we no longer lean to our own understanding but accept and receive what the Word of God says about our lives, judgment from the Almighty flows to us like a river and righteousness becomes like a mighty stream! This is a beautiful month, a time we recognize our mothers. I am fortunate to have a wonderful mother who loves me. Her love has steered me out of many troubled waters over the years and brought me to safe havens along the way! The Scripture says, “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother…” (John 19:25). The love of a mother goes beyond this life. Nothing can kill or stop love. A big soldier can’t stop love; no fire can quench it; fear melts at the sound of love’s steps. Many years ago in a rural area, a mother was inside doing chores while her children played outside. A bear ambled out of the woods where her children were playing and that mother saw it, grabbed a broom and ran outside after the bear, chasing it back into the woods! That’s the strength of the love of a mother! But this verse touches me every time I read it. “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother…” She saw what was happening to her son. She heard the crowd turn against Him. She couldn’t stop what was taking place, but there she stood, unfailing love, faith and devotion to the Messiah, the Savior of the world. It was this same Mary who received the words of the angel who proclaimed the birth of Jesus and accepted with great humility when she said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy Word” (Luke 1:38). Nine months later in the little town of Bethlehem, many miles from her home, she watched as shepherds came from the fields and told of their experience with the angelic hosts, proclaiming the birth of the Savior, her infant son. “But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). Eight days later she took the child into Jerusalem to dedicate Him to the Lord according to the Law of Moses. A man named Simeon came and held Him up before God and prophesied over Him. At the end, he spoke a word to Mary, saying, “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (Luke 2:34 & 35). Her care for the Lord Jesus was evident throughout His life, culminating at the cross: “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother…” Others had run away for fear. But Mary and some of the other women and John stood by the cross. “When Jesus therefore saw His mother…” That must have been such a comforting sight to Him! None else was there for Him, but He saw His mother! Through it all His mother was still there. Is there a stronger bond between two people than a mother’s love for her son or daughter? Though we live in a fallen world, broken humanity may be tainted by sin, yet on the cross Jesus cared so much for His mother, and thereby all mother-child relationships, that this account was put into the Bible to tell us that love can be restored; care can be nurtured and God does care about you and your parents. There can be true restoration between the generations. “When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple standing by, whom He loved, He saith unto His mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith He to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home” (John 19:26 & 27). John gained a mother that day. Jesus knew John would be sure Mary was in church; among the believers and that she would be a vibrant member of the Christian community, following her new “son.” We read of her being in the upper room on the day of Pentecost in Acts 1: 14. She received the infilling of the Holy Spirit like the rest did! There’s nothing like being in church! The Lord Jesus knows we all need shepherding and He wanted to be sure His mother was well tended and spiritually fed all the days of her life. John would provide that for her. I hope this letter inspired you to reach out to your mother wherever she may be, no matter what the circumstances are. If she is no longer with you take a few moments and honor her by being a blessing to someone else. Tell someone about the love of Jesus today. The Scripture tells us that love never fails. It is the greatest of all gifts! May God bless you this month. If you don’t have a church, I invite you to ours.
