Week of May 2, 2011

The Williams School works with each child to build and enduring
foundation for academic, moral and social success. A Williams School
student embodies integrity, confidence and a love of learning.

Honor before Honors

Dear Williams School Families,

“Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi Oi Oi!” was the chant of the week here at The Williams School. We hosted a group of
Australian High School Bagpipers who were in town for the Tattoo. Karen Jackson’s husband does an amazing job of
putting the Tattoo together every year. Sometimes, our connection to the Jackson family affords us the opportunity to
invite guests from around the world to Williams. This year’s Australian troop performed for us flawlessly and, by my
understanding, the Australians turned into minor celebrities by the end of the day and were greeted at the Tattoo
yesterday with screams of glee a la Justin Bieber…from many of our fourth through eighth grade girls…hmmm.

As great as that performance might have been, last weekend we had many more incredible performances by our Forensics
Team at two different tournaments. The fourth, fifth, and sixth graders went to The Friends School to compete on Sunday
and the seventh and eighth graders competed at our school last Saturday. Our students did exceptionally well in both
events. Sue Schneider, our fifth and sixth grade teacher was in charge of making sure everyone had a piece to do, that
each child had a coach, and that everyone was ready to compete. Parents and teacher volunteers all assisted with the
coaching of our team members. Sue did a wonderful job in her first year as head coach and looks forward to making it
even better next year. Because we hosted the seventh and eighth grade tournament, we needed someone who would be
able to organize, plan and execute a seamless all-day tournament. We fortunately have that person in our middle school
English and math teacher, Emily Justesen. She did an incredible job of organizing the event here and we are still getting
messages of accolades for her work with regard to how well it was run. The blessing of great faculty!

As you recall, our auction’s initial call for

bidding helped to supplement and offset
some of the cost of a new bus for our
school! And now I can finally announce
that we have ordered a new bus for our
school. It will be delivered in mid-August.
With our students’ safety in mind at the
fore, we ordered special seating for forty
eight people (that’s two full classes with their
teachers!) with three point buckling system for
every passenger—all adjustable for even our smallest passengers! Here
is a picture of the vehicle and the type of seating it will have (note that
the handicap access door on the back will not be there.) We will have The Williams School Honor Before Honors on the
sides of the bus and possibly have our motto and our “window” as a big decal on the back of the bus. A special thank you
goes out to the Ad Hoc Bus Committee who spent quite a bit of time exchanging views and expertise mostly over email
communication in the months leading up to this purchase. Robert will have to give this bus its name and hopefully a
future Head of School will write lovingly about its twenty five year service when we go and replace this bus in 2036!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Best,

Jay
