A soldier without a uniform: The story of Erik Roemer

I
t was a typical snowy day in
December 2005 when Erik’s
mother Adele heard a crash
coming from the other room.
She ran in to find her 20-year-
old son crawling on his hands
and knees experiencing
tremendous dizziness and a
strange headache. Erik Roemer
was always known as “The Big
Guy.” At 6’5” 250lbs, he was
strong and built like an oak
tree. The following day after his
fall, Erik was diagnosed with a
malignant brain tumor.
Test after test, scan after
scan, Erik remained positive
and determined to beat his
cancer. He never once got
upset or asked why this was
happening to him. Going
through radiation and
chemotherapy caused severe fa-
tigue and nausea, but did not
deter him from enjoying every
day to the fullest. After a year-
long battle, Erik went into re-
mission in December 2006.It
seemed that Erik had won his
battle for life. He found a job
working at a local car dealer-
ship and continued living life
fully and passionately.
Six months later, Erik re-
ported for a routine scheduled
MRI. He had two others prior
to this one that both came out
clear. However, this one would
change the course of Erik’s and
his family’s lives. This third
MRI revealed that the cancer
had returned just months after
it had disappeared. Despite the
implications of the relapse, the
far more intense chemotherapy,
the hours upon hours to be
spent at the hospital on an al-
most daily basis, Erik’s strong
spirit never dwindled. His mind
was made up. He was going to
overcome his cancer and the
treatment or die trying.
As time went on, it be-
came clear that Erik was
changing physically; however,
he never let on to his friends
how bad things really were. He
felt that these things happen to
people all the time, and this
time it was happening to him.

was there, he expressed a desire
that shocked everyone. He
wanted to go skydiving. For
many, skydiving represents one
of the most horrifying fears the
natural world has to offer. Yet
even in his weakened state,
Erik wanted to experience the
freedom and excitement of
jumping out of a plane. After
consulting his doctor, on No-
vember 28, 2007 Erik went sky-
diving from 18,000 feet. He
wasn’t feeling well that day, but
he was so excited about going
it simply didn’t matter. As his
mother waited for him on the
ground, she suddenly saw what

prevent your cat from scratch-
ing, but you can train them to
scratch only in certain approved
areas. A type of scratching post
will give your cat the alternative
place to scratch. Cats scratch
most frequently right after wak-
ing so it is critical that the
scratching post is convenient to

ing areas, or where they are cur-

name will forever be connected
to brain cancer research. At
his funeral, Rev. Jeff Gibelius
said “even though Erik’s life as
we know it is over his story is
only beginning. The best is yet
to be.” He was so right.
Erik wasn’t just your av-
erage Joe. He was a legacy-
rotator cuff impingement, but
her strength and stability ap-
peared to be intact.
“Well, Mrs.B” we ex-
plained, “we are going to discuss
several options with you, but
surgery is not one of them.” All
of a sudden, her color came
back. We explained to her that
two sessions of physical therapy
was not adequate treatment to
get her shoulder better. We
also discussed various injection
options with her, but empha-
sized that it is perfectly reason-
able to try physical therapy by
itself first. So off she went,

able that even though he is
not with us, Erik’s legacy con-
tinues to make beautiful things
happen and brings people to-
gether in a profound way. It

drove some of his friends to
finish school, travel, and just
be the best person they can be.

ory. Though he is not physi-
cally here, he continues to
lead. Truly, Erik Roemer
started out as an ordinary
young man…but left an ex-
traordinary legacy.
