Nothing can stop Fullerton rebuild

There was rain, thunder and
lightning in the forecast last
week, but that didn’t stop a new
playground from rising at the
hands of the Moorestown com-
munity.
Lead by Leathers and Associ-
ates, the Friends of Fullerton,
hundreds of community volun-
teers were out at Fullerton Park,
rain or shine, working for five
days straight to build a play-
ground as special as the one it is
replacing.
Plenty of community members
stepped up to the challenge last
week, including some local ath-
letes.
The Moorestown seventh-
grade girls, the Moorestown fifth-
grade girls, and the Moorestown
seventh-grade boys black and
gold lacrosse teams stepped up to
help with the build from the very
first day.
Coach Tim Monahan said the
group of athletes planned to pro-
vide the people power necessary
to help move equipment and ma-
terials to the construction site.

Moorestown Lacrosse Club have
really put an emphasis this year
on the importance of the athletes
being community leaders and
role models in the community.
“All of the coaches have really
stressed leadership, community
service and giving back to the
sport, to the club and to the
town,” he said.
In addition to manual labor
that the club put in, seventh and
fifth graders visited the site to
serve up a much-needed ice
cream break for all those who had
been hard at work on the build.
There were other special ap-
pearances last week as well, in-
cluding some help from Paul
Fullerton and some of his class-
mates from nearby Mt. Laurel.
Paul is a grandson of Frank
Fullerton Sr., who lost life in the
line of duty in 1979 and for whom
the park was named.
The playground was scheduled
for a soft opening on Sunday
evening. Mayor John Button was
scheduled to attend the official
open along with some of Frank
Fullerton’s family members, in-
cluding his youngest sister Alice
Fullerton, who is a Moorestown
resident.

Voters give school budget passing grade

Moorestown voters headed to
the polls last week for the annual
school election and the results are
in: the school district’s proposed
2011-12 budget has passed.
According to results released
by the school district, 2,066 voters
said yes to the MTPS proposed
tax levy and 1,076 voters said no
to the budget.
“The entire educational com-
munity deeply appreciates the
support of the township’s voters.
We remain fully committed to
providing all of our 4,200 students
with a distinctive, high quality
educational experience,” Super-
intendent John Bach said.
The budget carries a 1.19 per-
cent tax levy increase over last
year. Residents in the average as-
sessed home of $534,100 will pay
an increase of $80 per year, or
$6.67 per month, in school taxes.
The approved budget includes
the elimination of 31 full-time
equivalent positions for the com-
ing school year, reductions that
will result in elimination and
modifications to programs across
the district.
Reductions include the elimi-
nation of two full-time-equivalent
teaching positions in the elemen-
tary schools based on enrollment
projections, one auditory impair-
ment interpreter because the pro-
gram is being eliminated across
the district, one teacher and one
paraprofessional position due to
the elimination of the pre first
program, one challenge program
position and one world language
teacher.
At Moorestown Upper Elemen-
tary School, two FTE teacher po-
sitions and one secretarial posi-
tion will be nixed due to enroll-
ment projections and efficiencies.

Sensei Jules Shuzen Harris
will teach a new body-mind lan-
guage that allows people to break
through limitations and directly
reconnect with their ability to
function effectively. This aware-
ness work is based on the pioneer-
ing techniques of psychoanalyst
Stanley Block and his book Come
to Your Senses.
The Identity System, also
known as the I-System, is a fresh
approach to enable the natural
self to thrive. Harris was the first
psychotherapist to be certified by
Block to teach the I-System tech-
nique.
Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and
the program will begin at 10 a.m.
The day will also include sitting
and walking mediation, a talk by
Shuzen Sensei and an opportuni-
ty for discussion at the end of the
day.
Sensei Jules Shuzen Harris has
been practicing Zen for almost 30
years and is the first Zen teacher
in the Philadelphia area to re-
ceive dharma transmission from
Roshi Enkyo O’Hara in the
Soto/Rinzai tradition. He has an
Doctorate of Education degree
with a concentration in applied
human development and is a li-
censed psychotherapist.
The Buddhist Sangha of South
Jersey will provide tea and light
snacks but you should bring your
own lunch. Chairs will be avail-
able for sitting but you may bring
your own mat and cushion, if you
would prefer to sit on the floor. A
limited number of mats and cush-
ions will be available. The sug-
gested donation for the day is $25.

Real men wear pink

Jamil Glenn is a motion pic-
ture, music video and commer-
cial director who wants you to
“think pink” with a feature film
that he and his colleagues have af-
fectionately nicknamed “the little
movie that could.”
Real Men Wear Pink is a 78-
minute motion picture that
Glenn, a Moorestown resident,
calls a “hopeful comedy.” The
story follows five, seemingly un-
connected characters in short
film style.
“You don’t see a connection
with all of the characters during
the movie,” Glenn, who directed
the film, said.
“What happens is at the end of
the movie, everything is connect-
ed and you see that there is a rea-
son why they’re all wearing
pink.”

But the pink theme doesn’t end
with the plot; Glenn and the mo-
tion picture company LIMHAJ
Films have decided to take on
breast cancer awareness and will
use some of the movie’s proceeds
to make a charitable contribution
to the Bernice Bullock Breast
Cancer Foundation.
“Every movie I do from now
on, I want to be able to link what
the movie is about to a cause, pro-
vide some type of contribution to
a cause,” Glenn said. “Even if the
movie doesn’t make a large
amount of money, every time you
hit our Web site it’s a reminder
about it.”
What makes the film more
unique is the way in which you
can watch it. With the current
state of the movie business lean-
ing away from movie theaters
drawing in crowds and making
money, Glenn decided to try out a
new distribution tactic – he’s pro-

viding the movie online and for
free.
“We’re experiencing a shift in
the way people view movies,”
Glenn said, noting that most
major companies are providing
content online and on demand,
and that theaters are seeing less
revenue because of it. “I think the
whole theater process is going to
go out the window and eventually,
people are going to be able to
watch new releases and films that
are just hitting theaters immedi-
ately on their TV or computer.”
Glenn has been making movies
for more than a decade, but this is
his first feature film. He’s been
making short films for the past 14
years. One of his latest short
films, called Cold Murder, got na-
tional attention and won awards
at the Tribecca Film Festival and
the New York Film Festival. After

is seeking volunteers
The Tender, Inc., an organiza-
tion serving seniors in Burling-
ton County, needs more volun-
teers 18 or older to drive frail eld-
erly people to medical or other ap-
pointments and take them shop-
ping and to work directly with
clients in the day center, helping
with games, crafts and other ac-
tivities and with snacks and
lunch.
Volunteers receive training
and orientation. While day cen-
ter volunteers are asked to com-
mit to the same day each week,

Step up to the plate for Phillies Home Run Derby
Batter up! It’s time for the an-
nual Phillies Home Run Derby to
hit Moorestown.
This popular, annual contest
sponsored by the Philadelphia
Phillies, uses an automatic pitch-
ing machine to throw ten good
pitches to each contestant. Points
are scored for all fair balls hit, dis-
tance hits, and home runs.
Any ball that hits fair is worth
one point, distance hits are worth
two points, and home runs count
for five points. The distance hits
and home runs shift with each
age division, so they are well
within the range of most hitters.
The speed of the pitch also shifts
for each division.
The Moorestown Department
of Parks and Recreation will
award a number of prizes to the
night’s big hitters. First, second,
and third place winners in each
category will receive a Phillies
engraved plaque.
The winners will also be invit-
ed to a regional final to be held
later in the summer. From the re-
gionals, winners will compete for
championship, to be held at Citi-
zens Bank Park later in the sum-
mer.
Phillies tickets and other base-
ball-related items will be given
out during random drawings
throughout the event. This way,
every boy and girl entering the
contest is a potential winner, re-
gardless of his or her score.
A separate girls contest will be
held on the same date at the same
location where a softball will be
used instead of a baseball.
This would provide the oppor-
tunity for girls to hit the softball
and also advance to the girls re-
gional final.
This year’s Phillies Home Run
Derby is scheduled for May 20,
with a May 25 rain date. The
event will kick off at 5:30 p.m. at
Jeff Young Memorial Park at the
corner of Lenola and New Al-
bany roads. The contest is open
for all boys and girls ages 7 to 12.
Registrations will be accepted
through May 16 at the Depart-
ment of Parks and Recreation Of-
fice at 2 Executive Drive, Suite 9B.

The effort to rebuild Fullerton
Park has been almost a yearlong
effort between the Friends of
Fullerton and Moorestown Town-
ship.
When it was announced that
the playground would be torn
down due to safety and liability
issues, members of the Friends of
Fullerton banded together to
make sure the structure that went
up was as special as the original
one.
To do so, they employed the
help of Leathers and Associates,
