FIRST WORD

May 7 & 8, 2011

First Baptist Church Naples

Motherhood Surprises
I want to say “Happy Mother’s Day” to all of our moms. I am
grateful for the godly mothering and modeling of my wife,
Janet. I am thrilled that our oldest, Kristin, reflects her heart
and character with her two girls. She is expecting a third in
June.
A number of mothers were surveyed and indicated what surprised them
about motherhood. Here are the varied surprises (in their words): “My
temper and impatience. How tired I feel. That a little baby can take up a
whole day. While I love my kids, some days I don’t like them. I say things
to my children that I vowed I would never say. I realize that I will never be
able to use the bathroom alone again!” They were also surprised “At how
many times a nose needs to be wiped, that a 2-year-old can bring an adult
to her knees in prayer faster than anything else, that she can’t punch out
from her job at 5 o’clock or 10 o’clock, and that worrying about germs,
strangers, and car accidents is ever-present.”
On a more positive note, mothers were surprised at “How much love she
had in her heart for her child even when he or she was naughty, how
being a mom brings out the best in her, that she truly understands her
own mother for the first time, that she could love a second child, then a
third as much as her first little one, and how wonderful it is to be called
‘Mommy’. ”
Women have also been surprised at how God answers child-like prayers
from mustard-seed faith. They have been relieved to know that the
house can survive more spills than can be counted and that her worth
as a manager would impress anyone with her resume: the ability to work
without supervision, often under stress and with frequent distractions;
the ability to communicate well with people of all ages and education
levels; the ability to be resourceful and to plan and coordinate activities
of various people, as well as being chauffeur, lifeguard, bodyguard, chef,
money manager, counselor, nurse, teacher, etc.; the ability to handle
conflict with patience and minimal fallout. She’s hired!
Moms, perhaps you were most surprised at how God uses you despite
your inadequacies and lack of formal training as a life-changer. You say
with Mary when she discovered that she was with child: “The Mighty One
has done great things for me. He has exalted those who are humble. He
has filled the hungry with good things” (Luke 1:49, 52, 53).

Guest Reception
There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the

Summer Adult Bible Study
Living on the Edge
(by Chip Ingram)
Beginning Wednesday, June 1
6:30 p.m. in the Worship Center

Romans 12 is the START HERE for the Christian life. What most
Christians sadly misunderstand is that God isn’t into religious
activities or performance-based Christianity. Instead, Romans 12
reveals to us a relational profile of what it means to be a disciple,
as well as a proven pathway to becoming more like Jesus each day.
