Invitation to the John Grace Lecture

“Nature vs Nurture Revisited: Did My Genes

Make Me Do It?”
An Annual CIG Symposium Public Lecture by

Professor Ralph Greenspan,

Internationally renowned neurobiologist and Associate Director,

Kavli Institute for the Brain and Mind, University of California

Sunday, June 19 2011, 18h00

th

Location: University of Lausanne Sorge campus, Genopode building

The Centre for Integrative Genomics (CIG) is very pleased and honored to welcome
Professor Ralph Greenspan, Associate Director of the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind
at the University of California, San Diego, USA. Professor Greenspan will give a special
public lecture entitled ‘Nature vs Nurture Revisited: Did My Genes Make Me Do It?’ In it,
he explores the question of how our genes affect our behavior and will cover what we
know of the extent and the ways in which genes influence behavior. From studying
findings from research on humans and various animals he offers some clues to this
intriguing question which is as old as the science of genetics itself. We warmly welcome
everyone interested in this fascinating topic to join us on this very special occasion.
The John Grace public lecture series offers public lectures by prominent local,
national and international speakers which are open to everyone. This public lecture
is part of the CIG Annual Symposium, which this year is on the topic of ‘Brain and
Behavior ‘
Please join us for refreshments after the lecture.
Venue: University of Lausanne Sorge campus, Génopode Building

About Professor Ralph Greenspan

Dr. Greenspan has been intrigued by the genetic basis of behavior in the fruit fly
Drosophila for over three decades. After receiving his PhD in biology from Brandeis
University in 1979, he conducted research at Princeton University, the Roche
Institute of Molecular Biology, and New York University before joining The
Neurosciences Institute of San Diego in 1997 where he is the Dorothy and Lewis B.
Cullman Fellow in Experimental Neurobiology. Dr Greenspan's research activities
have included the demonstration that the fly has sleep-like and attention-like
behaviors similar to those of humans, the molecular identification of genes
underlying natural variations in behavior, and studies of the principles governing
gene networks underlying behavior. In addition to numerous research papers, he has
also authored an article for Scientific American and several books, including Genetic
Neurobiology with Jeffrey Hall and William Harris, Fly Pushing: The Theory and
Practice of Drosophila Genetics, and The World As We Find It: An Introduction to
Nervous Systems.
