Teachers notes
Mastering Tables provides a variety of activities to facilitate remediation, practice and extension of basic times table facts.
Covering the basic tables, 2 – 10, Mastering Tables also extends pupils to consider the 12, 15, 20, 25 and 50 times tables. Derivatives
for each table are covered throughout the related activities. For example, as the three times table facts and patterns are studied, so too
are the 30 times table facts; four times table studies the 40 times table and so on.
Teachers can use Mastering Tables for formal classroom lessons, revision and reinforcement, extension or homework activities.
Calculators may be a useful mathematical tool for pupils when tackling more difficult stages of these multiplication tables.
The activities are divided into four main learning areas.

Timing

• Each pupil begins with the maximum time allowance of

3 minutes.
• Pupils mark their answers (provided on pages 48 – 52) to get
a score and colour their progress on the ‘Pupil progress graph’
(pages vi – vii).
• The pupils need to work out their time allowance for the next
day/lesson. Those with a perfect score (40) will reduce their
times to 2 minutes. Those who did not obtain a perfect score
remain on 3 minutes.

e
• Each time a pupil scores a perfect score, his/her time is further
reduced by 30 seconds, making each test more challenging.

pl
Pupils with perfect scores move from 3 minutes to 2 minutes to
90 seconds and finally to 60 seconds.
• Those pupils not scoring 40 will remain on the same time
frame until they are directed by a teacher or until they score

Marking
Vi

Marking is simple. Answers are provided. There are several ways you might like to arrange for answers to be marked. Remember,
mental sessions should be brief and to the point so whichever method you choose needs to be efficient while identifying potential
problem areas.
Methods could include:
• whole-class: the teacher calls the answers to pupils who either self-check or partner-check.
• pupil checking: pupils use answer sheets provided to either self-check or partner-check.
• collection: the teacher collects the worksheets to mark individual pupil work. This can be a useful process to check accuracy of
other methods used.

Games

(a) Tables Battleships (found on pages 29, 32, 35, 38 and 41)
A game for 2 players.
Each player has a 16-squared grid with coordinates A, B, C, D and 1, 2, 3, 4. Each player fills
in seven multiples of the designated table. The remaining squares are filled with the word
‘miss’. Players then take turns locating the other player’s ‘ships’ (multiples) by calling coordinates;
e.g. B4.
For example (x 6 table grid shown)
If a player calls ‘B4’, the other player calls ‘ship 48’. If the first player calls out the correct
times table for 48 (i.e. 6 x 8) then that ‘ship’ is ‘sunk’ and crossed out.The winner is the first
player to sink all 7 ‘ships’ belonging to the other player.

(b) Snakes ‘n’ Ladders (found on pages 14, 17, 20, 23 and 26)

pl
A game for 2 players.
Colour each number on the gameboard which is a multiple of the assigned times table; e.g. 7 times table—7, 14, 21, 28 …. Draw
4 ladders from coloured multiples to higher numbers. Draw 4 snakes from coloured multiples and leading down to lower numbers.
Pupils will need a die and two small counters. To start from the number 1, pupils will need to throw a 6 on the die. If a counter lands

on a ladder it is moved up to the number at the top of the ladder. If a counter lands on a snake, it is moved down to the number
at the base of the snake. The first player to reach 100 wins the game.
(c) Tables Bingo (see page xiii for templates.) Tables bing o

Tables spinners
Teachers select a times table grid that pupils will play in. Fill in the
squares of that bingo grid with multiples of the number in the centre.
Sa
(Multiples are numbers that a given number will divide into exactly.
Multiples of 3, for example, are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 etc.) Teachers orally call
a multiplication sum from the allotted table; e.g. 3 x 5. If the answer is
on a pupil’s grid he/she crosses it off. Pupils call out ‘Bingo’ when a line
(across, down or diagonally) or all numbers are crossed. (To be
g
determined by the teacher before the game commences.)
(d) Tables Spinners (see page xii for templates.)
in

Copy spinners onto thick card. Cut and colour the spinners and use a
pencil or similar object to poke through the centre. The teacher or
pupil leaders, in small groups, can nominate a table orally; e.g. 5 times
table. Pupils take turns to spin the appropriate spinner to match the
selected table. Pupils record the multiplication answers when the number
