"Education is the most powerful
weapon which you can use to change
the world."-Nelson Mandela

The opening words of the movie Lords of the rings

say,”Even the smallest person can change the
couse of the future” but as the story goes further it
proves that only they can. So never let the child
inside you to die.
Purpose of the study:-

To determine the number of children attending the schools and to motivate the
children who do not attend the school regularly.

Area under study:-

Shantinagar Kalwa near Thane is considered for study. The total population of the
entire area is around 5500-6000 and mostly people are wanderers who keep
changing places in order to get jobs.

A total of 150 houses were covered in the community and informal discussion with
both the parents & the children were done to know the reasons behind not sending
their children to school.
Findings from FGD’s (Focussed Group Discussion-Parents):-

• Many parents said that school in Anantnagar is across the railway tracks and
they fear that their kids might be kidnapped by encroachers.

• Some parents complaint that teachers in the schools beat their kids which put
a wrong impresion in the young minds of children.

• As number of parents residing in Shantinagar are jobless. They wander from

place to place in search of jobs and they need some one to be at their homes.

• Also few residents are single parent and have their young one’s (at the
home) so they find it difficult to send the elder child to school.

• Most of the parents also complain that other children in the school trouble
their kids and also say that some of the boys behave improperly towards
girls and these are the reasons parents are worried about.

• Many parents don’t have ration cards. In schools teachers are asking for that.
Findings from children’s:-

• Many kids work as rag pickers and small menial workers in nearby places to
support their families. Few are also seen as thieves in local trains and in the
community.

• Being beggar is the most sought after profession amongst children in the
community, which needs to be changed.

• Elder children complain that since they did not attend any school earlier,
they feel embarrassed to attend the class along with lower aged children.

• Children also complain that teachers beat them in school, so they stopped
attending school.

• Children also complain about the short sightedness behavior of their parents
as they think “Since education does not guarantees employment and more
so especially for girl child what is the use in increasing the number of
unemployed people in the country”. So parents do not send the kids to the
school.

• Few girls in the community get married at the age of 15-16 yrs., which is
against their will but they say their parents hardly care to listen to them.
Findings of Volunteers:-

• Parents do not disclose entire facts of their children.

• Earning money and food for family is the priorities for many of the families,
so they hardly pay any interest for their children’s future.

• Few parents themselves are not interested in sending their children to school
as they are the bread earners of the family.

• People are not aware of the benefits to be given by the Government under
various schemes to Backward Group People- BPL groups like education,
health and labor.

• Parents are not aware of the municipal schools in their locality as most of
them are frequent movers to different places.

• Corporal punishments are one of the important causes of making children

drop out from the school; since schools do not provide any other activity
apart from academics they do not attend the school due to boredom.

• The parents are not aware about the procedures to get their children enrolled
in the school.

• Teachers and parents discussions must take place on a regular basis to

spread the awareness on education.
Any report would not be complete without SWOT Analysis:

Strengths:-

1. Regular visits by social service organizations (NGO) in the community to

check whether the children’s attend the school or not.

Weakness:-

1. The basic infrastructure becomes the primary factor of obstruction to provide

an excellent environment for study such as safe and potable drinking water,
toilets, tube lights and fans.

2. Teachers in the school do not try finding the reasons why the children’s do not
attend school by going personally to the community.

3. Computers are not in working condition and hence should be repaired at

priority basis and computer classes should be conducted for students (at least for
those who are interested).

4. School also does not pursue any audio-visual facility as better ways of
education which would help the students to understand the concepts better.

Opportunities:-

1. Regular community visits by teachers and mentors would help in getting

children to schools and reduce drop-out rate amongst children.

2. Extra classes could be a solution for the children who lag or find it difficult
to study.
3. Students can be awarded and rewarded who scores good marks in academics
and other competitions all round. Also award for attendance can be given to
increase the strength of the school.

4. Playing facilities and entertainment equipments could help in overall

development of the students and hence would make it more interesting for
children to attend school.

5. The number of Computers and Sewing machines could be increased so that

the benefit could be secured by more number of children.

6. Try roping in some NGO’s who can help in teaching some trade (garland
making, cloth hand bags, pottery, painting etc. to help in livelihood) and
deliver lectures on hygiene and character building (Child rights could be one
of the topic).

Threat:-

1. Absenteeism in the school at an alarming rate is a matter of concern

(especially in the morning school). On an average, out of 530 students
175 students are absent which needs to be focused.

2. Absence of character building and lack of supervision not only make

children absent in school but also implementing bad activities in them
like chewing tobacco and cigarette, foul language.

3. As children being the future of any country, the future moves towards
dark when they do not attend school.
4. Literacy rate of the state and country at large will decline when the
dropout rate is high.

Recommendations to the School and Govt. bodies from the study

undertaken:-

• Basic infrastructure like safe drinking water for children and teachers is a
must and to be done at the priority basis.

• Toilets and maintenance of the classes like tube lights and fans should be
done to provide the children a good environment to study in.

• Teachers in the schools must be asked to visit the community of habitat on a

regular basis. As it not only will allow to check the drop-out rate of the
school but also to know any problems of other parents who do not send their
child to school.

• The school looks devoid of any Security Guard as a matter of security comes
to highlight.

• Playing and entertainment facilities like music should be introduced as one

amongst these children would in future represent our country.

• Children who are very keen in studies be provided with additional benefits
like food and notebooks and guidance from teachers for extra classes to
write competitive exams like Scholarship and Olympiads exams.
• As food is given for the benefit of children, their opinions in the day-to-day
menu must be taken.

• Health check-up must be done on a more regular basis as children suffer

from flu due to poor surroundings in the neighborhood.

• Government should increase the Municipal school education from seventh to

tenth. As this would help the unprivileged students complete their secondary
education and would lead to better literacy of the country.

• Government should try starting few English schools in the community as a

number of parents are interested in sending their kids to English schools.
