1 Overview of copy solutions
HP StorageWorks XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 arrays provide an extensive suite of data replication
software. This chapter describes HP StorageWorks Snapshot XP. This chapter also covers portions of
HP StorageWorks Business Copy XP because Snapshot XP is an integrated feature of Business Copy XP.

NOTE: The use of Snapshot XP, Business Copy XP, and all other software products is governed by the
terms of your license agreements with Hewlett-Packard.

IMPORTANT: This guide contains information about internal disks or LDEVs. Unlike the
XP12000/XP10000 Disk Arrays, the SVS200 has no internal disks. Therefore, information about internal
disks or LDEVs does not apply to the SVS200.

Snapshot XP
Snapshot XP, like Business Copy XP, enables you to create multiple real-time online local copies of logical
volumes. Snapshot XP enables applications and solutions such as zero-downtime backup and disaster
recovery. While Business Copy XP creates complete copies, Snapshot XP creates space-efficient copies
that replicate only data from the primary volume that was rewritten using less disk space, which reduces
costs. Snapshot XP is supported on open systems such as UNIX and PC servers. Snapshot XP is an
integrated feature of Business Copy XP.
Snapshot XP creates pairs of primary volumes (P-VOLs) and secondary volumes (S-VOLs). Snapshot XP
secondary volumes are partial copies containing only changed P-VOLs. Snapshot XP is also known as
Copy-on-Write Snapshot. All changed data is kept in common snapshot pools (pool-VOLs). Pointers kept
in mapping tables allow access to secondary volumes through virtual volumes (V-VOLs). The S-VOL is
composed of data in the pool-VOL (old data that has since changed in the P-VOL) and data in the P-VOL
(data that has not changed yet). The P-VOL/S-VOL pair that Snapshot XP creates is called a Snapshot XP
pair.

Snapshot XP user guide 11

Figure 1 illustrates the mechanism Snapshot XP uses to copy data in the array.

Figure 1 Snapshot XP mechanism

In Figure 1, Data A is stored in the Snapshot XP pair’s P-VOL. When the host requests to update Data A to
Data B, Snapshot XP copies Data A to the pool volume (pool-VOL) in the pool before updating the P-VOL.
After the copy operation for Data A is complete, Snapshot XP writes Data B to the area where Data A was
stored in the P-VOL, and the P-VOL is updated. From the S-VOL, you can access Data B in the P-VOL and
Data A in the pool-VOL.
Snapshot XP and Business Copy XP are similar because both create pairs. However, Snapshot XP pair
S-VOLs do not consume array capacity because the S-VOLs are actually virtual volumes. Therefore,
Snapshot XP reduces the capacity the array uses as a whole.
The copy process for Business Copy XP pairs takes longer because all P-VOL data is copied to the S-VOL.
On the other hand, the copy process for Snapshot XP pairs takes less time compared to the copy process
for Business Copy XP pairs because, as you can see in Figure 1, only updated P-VOL data is copied to the
pool-VOL. The same data in the P-VOL can be referenced by accessing the Snapshot XP pair’s S-VOL, but
the actual data does not exist in the S-VOL. The P-VOL data can be referenced using the S-VOL.
As described previously, Snapshot XP requires less capacity in the array and less copy processing time
compared to Business Copy XP. HP recommends using Snapshot XP to copy and manage data in the short
term with reduced costs. However, Snapshot XP only copies some of the P-VOL data. Therefore, data
stored in the S-VOL is not guaranteed in the following:
• When a physical failure occurs in a P-VOL
• When a pool is blocked
On the other hand, Business Copy XP copies all P-VOL data to the S-VOL. Therefore, even if a physical
failure occurs in a P-VOL, you can recover the P-VOL data using the S-VOL data. Business Copy XP provides
higher integrity than Snapshot XP. HP recommends using Business Copy XP when data integrity is more
important than copy process speed or array capacity. For a functional overview of Business Copy XP, see
”Business Copy XP” on page 13.

12 Overview of copy solutions

Business Copy XP
Use Business Copy XP to maintain array-internal copies of all user data on the array for data on open
systems such as UNIX and PC servers. Business Copy XP creates a pair of P-VOL and S-VOL, both of
which are logical volumes in the same array. Pairs that Business Copy XP creates are called Business
Copy XP pairs.
RAID-protected S-VOLs are created within the same array as the P-VOL. Use Business Copy XP to create
up to three S-VOLs for a P-VOL. Using Business Copy XP with External Storage XP, you can use external
volumes to create Business Copy XP pairs.
Unlike the Snapshot XP pair’s S-VOL, all P-VOL data is copied to the Business Copy XP pair’s S-VOL.
Therefore, the capacity of the Business Copy XP pair’s P-VOL and S-VOL is the same. In addition, Business
Copy XP’s copy process takes longer because all P-VOL data is copied to the S-VOL.
As described previously, Business Copy XP requires larger array capacity and the copy process takes
longer compared to Snapshot XP. However, when a failure disables access to one of the pair’s volumes,
the array can continue to operate using data stored in the other volume because the same data is stored
in the P-VOL and S-VOL. HP recommends using Business Copy XP when data integrity is more important
than copy process speed or array capacity. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks Business
Copy XP user guide for the XP12000/XP10000/SVS200.

14 Overview of copy solutions
2 Snapshot XP functions
Snapshot XP creates pairs consisting of a P-VOL and S-VOL. When creating a pair, Snapshot XP uses a
V-VOL as the pair’s S-VOL. In addition, you can manage the P-VOL’s snapshot data by copying the data
to an area called the pool. This chapter describes the volumes Snapshot XP uses first, and then describes
Snapshot XP functions.

Volumes Snapshot XP uses

Snapshot XP uses the P-VOL, S-VOL, and pool-VOL. This section describes the requirements (such as
emulation type or path definition) for the volumes Snapshot XP uses.

Snapshot XP primary volumes

Table 2 Requirements for Snapshot XP P-VOLs

Item Requirement
Volume type Logical volume (LDEV)
LUSE volume can be specified.

NOTE: A LUSE P-VOL must be paired with an S-VOL that has the same size and structure.
For example, if a LUSE P-VOL is created by combining volumes that have 1 GB, 2 GB, and
3 GB in that order, you must specify a LUSE volume that has exactly the same size and
combination order as the S-VOL.

You cannot specify the following volumes as Snapshot XP P-VOLs:

• Volumes used as pool-VOLs
• Volumes used as a Snapshot XP pair’s S-VOL
• Volumes used by a Flex Copy XP pair
• NAS volumes

Emulation type OPEN-V

Maximum number 8,191

For more information about the maximum number of Snapshot XP pairs that can be created,
see ”Calculating the number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create” on page 22.

Path definition Required

Maximum capacity 2 TB

Snapshot XP secondary volumes

Table 3 Requirements for Snapshot XP S-VOLs

Item Requirement
Volume type V-VOL
You cannot specify the following volumes as Snapshot XP S-VOLs:
• Volumes used as a Snapshot XP pair’s S-VOL
• Volumes used by another software product’s pair or migration plan

NOTE: A LUSE S-VOL must be paired with a P-VOL that has the same size and structure.

Emulation type OPEN-V

Table 3 Requirements for Snapshot XP S-VOLs (continued)

Item Requirement
Maximum number 8,191
For more information about the maximum number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create, see
”Calculating the number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create” on page 22.

Path definition Required

Snapshot XP pool volumes

Table 4 Requirements for Snapshot XP pool-VOLs

Item Requirement
Volume type Logical volume (LDEV)
You cannot specify the following volumes as Snapshot XP pool-VOLs:
• LUSE volumes
• Volumes used as a Snapshot XP pair’s P-VOL or S-VOL
• Volumes used by another software product’s pair or migration plan
• Volumes set with the Protect or Read Only attribute, or set to the S-VOL Disable setting
by LUN Security XP Extension
• NAS volumes

Emulation type OPEN-V

Maximum number 131,072
However, the maximum number of pool-VOLs that can be registered in each pool is 1,024.
In addition, a volume already registered as a pool-VOL in a pool cannot be registered in
another pool.

Path definition Not required

Volumes with path definitions cannot be specified as pool-VOLs.

Creating virtual volume management areas

To use Snapshot XP, you must create virtual volume (V-VOL) management areas. The V-VOL management
area is an important area for associating Snapshot XP S-VOLs (V-VOL) with pool-VOLs. The V-VOL
management area is automatically created when additional shared memory is installed. For more
information about shared memory requirements, see Table 5. To install additional shared memory,
contact your HP account support representative.
There are two areas in the V-VOL management area: pool management block and pool association
information. When creating pools or Snapshot XP pairs, the pool management block or pool association
information is stored in the V-VOL management area. Therefore, the V-VOL management area’s available
capacity decreases. When all the V-VOL management area’s capacity is used, the capacity ratio of the
pool management block and pool association information in the V-VOL management area is fixed. If the
pool management block’s capacity is insufficient, problems might occur. For example, you cannot create
pools or pools with a large capacity. To solve such problems, initialize the V-VOL management area. For
more information, see ”Initializing V-VOL management areas or pool management blocks” on page 48.

Creating pools
A pool is an area where the snapshot data that Snapshot XP obtains is stored. A pool consists of multiple
pool-VOLs, and snapshot data is stored in a pool-VOL. You can register 1,024 pool-VOLs in a pool. You

16 Snapshot XP functions
can create 128 pools in an array. Figure 2 illustrates the relationship between Snapshot XP pairs and
pools.

Figure 2 Snapshot XP pair and pool mechanism

You must create a pool when using Snapshot XP. You can add pool-VOLs registered in a pool, but cannot
delete pool-VOLs during the operation. In addition, to delete the pool itself, you must delete all snapshot
data in the pool.

CAUTION: A pool’s capacity equals the total capacity of the pool-VOLs registered in the pool. The
Snapshot XP pair’s status is PSUE (status when failure occurred) when the pool’s usage rate exceeds the
pool’s capacity as a result of writing data in that pair’s volume. You cannot store Snapshot data in the
pool, and you cannot create Snapshot XP pairs. For more information about ensuring sufficient pool
capacity, see ”Notes on creating pools” on page 28.

To create a pool, use the Pool pane in Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console. For more
information, see ”Creating or deleting pools” on page 43.

Creating virtual volumes

A V-VOL is a virtual volume defined in a VDEV. You must create a V-VOL before you create a Snapshot XP
pair because you must use a V-VOL as the Snapshot XP pair’s S-VOL.
A V-VOL’s definition cannot be released if the V-VOL is being used as a Snapshot XP pair’s S-VOL. To
release the definition, delete the Snapshot XP pair using the V-VOL.

CAUTION: If you are using HP-UX® as a host server, observe the following when executing the
command on V-VOLs to recognize the device from the host server:
• If the host server already recognizes the device, do not change its volumes to V-VOLs.
• Before executing the command to recognize the device, create Snapshot XP pairs and store snapshot
data.

If you do not follow these cautions, an error might occur and the host server might be terminated. If the
host server is terminated because of the command to recognize the device, retry the command using the
following steps:
1. Force the command process and its parent process to terminate.

Snapshot XP user guide 17

2. Create a Snapshot XP pair.
3. Store the snapshot data in the pool.
4. Execute the command again to recognize the device.

NOTE:
• Servers (including RAID Manager XP) show V-VOLs with emulation type 0 (for example, OPEN-0V).
When creating a Snapshot XP pair, specify the volume with emulation type 0, such as OPEN-0V, as the
S-VOL.
• Before creating a V-VOL, you must define a V-VOL group. The emulation type of the V-VOLs and the
emulation type of the VDEV for a V-VOL group are OPEN-V. In addition, the VDEV’s capacity is always
2 TB. Therefore, the maximum capacity of a V-VOL is also 2 TB.

To delete a V-VOL, use the V-VOL pane in Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console. For more
information, see ”Creating or deleting virtual volumes” on page 49.

Creating Snapshot XP pairs

A Snapshot XP pair uses a V-VOL as its S-VOL. Therefore, you must create a V-VOL before creating a
Snapshot XP pair. In Snapshot XP, you can specify up to 64 S-VOLs for a P-VOL.
To create Snapshot XP pairs, use a RAID Manager XP command. For more information, see ”Creating
Snapshot XP pairs” on page 55.

CAUTION: When creating Snapshot XP pairs, you decide which pool the pairs use. If you create two or
more Snapshot XP pairs that share the same P-VOL, you must specify the same pool for these pairs. For
example, if you specify three S-VOLs for one P-VOL, you must specify the same pool for these three pairs.

NOTE: When deleting a Snapshot XP pair, the volumes’ status becomes SMPL(PD). You cannot create
pairs using SMPL(PD) volumes. If the volumes are in SMPL(PD) status, wait for a while and issue the
command to create pairs after the volumes’ status changes to SMPL.

Use the Business Copy XP main pane to see the volume’s status. Using RAID Manager XP, you can check
the volume status with the pairdisplay command, but you cannot distinguish between SMPL and
SMPL(PD) volumes. To distinguish between SMPL and SMPL(PD) volumes using RAID Manager XP, issue
the inqraid command as well. The inqraid command shows whether Snapshot XP is using the
volume. If Snapshot XP is not using the volume, the volume status is SMPL. If Snapshot XP is using the
volume, the volume status is SMPL(PD).

Storing snapshot data

Snapshot data is a replica of data in a Snapshot XP pair’s P-VOL, and is stored in a pool. When the
P-VOL is updated, updated data is copied to the pool as snapshot data before the P-VOL is updated. This
process is called storing snapshot data.
If you issue a command to a Snapshot XP pair to store snapshot data, the snapshot data is stored in the
pool when a host issues a write request to the Snapshot XP pair’s P-VOL.
To store snapshot data in a pool, use a RAID Manager XP command. For more information, see ”Storing
snapshot data” on page 55.

Restoring Snapshot XP pairs

Snapshot XP can restore a P-VOL’s contents to the state when the snapshot data was stored in the pool by
writing the snapshot data back to the P-VOL. Writing the snapshot data to the P-VOL is called restoration
of a Snapshot XP pair.

18 Snapshot XP functions
NOTE: If you restore the pair when data is written in the S-VOL instead of the snapshot data, data in the
S-VOL is written back to the P-VOL.

If there are problems with the P-VOL data during a failure, you can restore the P-VOL to the normal state
when the snapshot data was stored by executing restoration.
To restore a Snapshot XP pair, use a RAID Manager command. For more information, see ”Restoring
Snapshot XP pairs” on page 55.
Copy Threshold option: If the array’s load increases, host server I/O performance (response) might be
degraded. If Snapshot XP performs restore operations when the array’s load is heavy, it is more likely that
host server I/O performance (response) might be degraded. The Copy Threshold option temporarily stops
copy processing caused by restore operations when the array’s load is heavy. If you enable this option,
you can minimize the degradation of host I/O performance by temporarily stopping copy processing
caused by restore operations when the array’s load is heavy.
The Copy Threshold option is effective only when the array’s load is heavy. When the Copy Threshold
option is enabled, all copy processing by restore operations stops. For more information about setting the
Copy Threshold option, contact your HP account support representative.

NOTE: Copy operations stopped by the Copy Threshold option resume when the array’s load become
light. If this option is enabled, copy operations for Snapshot XP and the following software products stop
when the array’s load is heavy:
• Business Copy XP
• ShadowImage for z/OS®
• Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring
• Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2
• Flex Copy XP
• Auto LUN XP

Deleting snapshot data or Snapshot XP pairs

The status of the Snapshot XP pair is PSUE (status when failure occurred) when, as a result of writing data
in that pair’s volume, the snapshot data’s capacity exceeds the pool’s capacity specified when the pool
was created. You cannot create Snapshot XP pairs and store snapshot data in the pool. Therefore, you
must delete unnecessary snapshot data. There are two ways to delete snapshot data. One way is to delete
the Snapshot XP pair itself. The other way is to delete only the snapshot data.
When deleting the Snapshot XP pair itself, snapshot data stored in the pool is deleted and the relationship
between the P-VOL and S-VOL is released. On the other hand, if you delete only snapshot data, the
relationship between the P-VOL and S-VOL is maintained. When deleting only snapshot data, the
snapshot ID of the deleted snapshot data can be assigned to the newly stored snapshot data of the
Snapshot XP pair.
To delete snapshot data or Snapshot XP pairs, use a RAID Manager XP command. When deleting
Snapshot XP pairs, you can also use the Pairsplit -S pane in Command View XP or XP Remote Web
Console. For more information, see ”Deleting snapshot data” on page 56 or ”Deleting Snapshot XP
pairs” on page 56.

NOTE:
• After issuing the command to delete snapshot data, no more snapshot data for that Snapshot XP pair
is stored in the pool, even if the host tries to write data in the P-VOL. To store snapshot data for that
Snapshot XP pair again, you must issue the command for storing snapshot data.

Snapshot XP user guide 19

• The required time for deleting snapshot data or Snapshot XP pairs is several seconds, and sometimes
more than 10 minutes. The time increases if the deleted pair uses a large amount of the pool or if
multiple pairs are deleted at one time.
• The more disk adaptors used in the array, the shorter the time required for deleting snapshot data or
Snapshot XP pairs. Since the XP10000/SVS200 has a smaller number of disk adaptors than the
XP12000, the XP10000/SVS200 needs a longer time to delete snapshot data or Snapshot XP pairs
than the XP12000, even if the operational conditions are the same.
• When deleting a Snapshot XP pair, the volumes’ status becomes SMPL(PD). Use the Business Copy XP
main pane to see the volume’s status. Using RAID Manager XP, you can check the volume status with
the pairdisplay command, but you cannot distinguish between SMPL and SMPL(PD) volumes. To
distinguish between SMPL and SMPL(PD) volumes using RAID Manager XP, issue the inqraid
command as well. The inqraid command shows whether Snapshot XP is using the volume. If
Snapshot XP is not using the volume, the volume status is SMPL. If Snapshot XP is using the volume, the
volume status is SMPL(PD).

Viewing Snapshot XP pair information

You can view information about Snapshot XP pairs, such as snapshot ID or pair status, on the Detail pane
in Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console. For more information, see ”Deleting Snapshot XP
pairs” on page 56.
In addition, you can view operation history for Snapshot XP pairs, such as creating or deleting Snapshot
XP pairs and storing snapshot data, on the History pane. For more information, see ”Displaying detailed
information about Snapshot XP pairs” on page 59.

20 Snapshot XP functions
3 Requirements for Snapshot XP operations
This chapter describes requirements for using Snapshot XP, installing Snapshot XP, and calculating the
number of pairs that Snapshot XP can create.

Requirements for using Snapshot XP

Table 5 Requirements for using Snapshot XP

Item Requirement
RAID level RAID1, RAID5, or RAID6

Shared memory Install shared memory for the differential table on the base board.
Configure shared memory so you can create the V-VOL management area in the
shared memory.
For the XP12000/SVS200, reserve from 512 MB × 2 to 2 GB × 2 capacity of the
shared memory for the V-VOL management area on the optional board.1 For more
information, see ”Calculating the number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create” on
page 22.
Prerequisite software product Install Business Copy XP.

Pool Create the pool. The pool’s maximum capacity changes with shared memory’s
capacity.

V-VOL Create the V-VOL.

Operation Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console and RAID Manager XP are
required to operate Snapshot XP.
1. Because the XP10000/SVS200 does not have the optional board, you must reserve 342 MB × 2 capacity of the shared
memory on the basic board if you are using the XP10000/SVS200.

For requirements of volumes used for Snapshot XP, see ”Volumes Snapshot XP uses” on page 15.

Installing and uninstalling Snapshot XP

This section describes procedures for installing and uninstalling Snapshot XP.

Installing Snapshot XP
1. Install additional shared memory for differential tables.
2. Install additional shared memory for the V-VOL management area.
When using an XP10000/SVS200, you do not need to install additional shared memory. You only
need to define shared memory for the V-VOL management area.
3. Install Business Copy XP, which is a prerequisite for Snapshot XP.
4. Install Snapshot XP.

NOTE:
• Contact your HP account support representative to install additional shared memory for the V-VOL
management area.
• After installing additional shared memory for the V-VOL management area, you cannot partially
uninstall it. To uninstall additional shared memory for the V-VOL management area, you must uninstall
the entire shared memory added for the V-VOL management area.
• Skip step 1 if shared memory for the differential tables is already installed.
• Note that step 2 and step 3 are interchangeable.
• Skip step 3 if Business Copy XP is already installed on the array.

Snapshot XP user guide 21

Uninstalling Snapshot XP
1. Delete all Snapshot XP pairs.
2. Delete all pools.
3. Delete all V-VOLs.
4. Uninstall Snapshot XP.
For more information about deleting pairs, pools, and V-VOLs, see ”Snapshot XP operations” on
page 37.

Calculating the number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create

The number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create for an array depends on the number of differential
tables, V-VOL management area’s shared memory capacity, or number of pair tables. To calculate the
number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create, first use the number of differential tables, then use the V-VOL
management area’s shared memory capacity, and finally use the number of pair tables. Then compare
the three results. The smallest value is the maximum number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create for the
array.

Using the number of differential tables

You can use a maximum of 13,652 differential tables for an array if additional shared memory is not
installed. You can use a maximum of 30,718 differential tables if additional shared memory is installed.
To calculate the number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create, calculate the number of differential tables
required for the Snapshot XP pair and compare it with the number of differential tables for the whole
array. In addition to Snapshot XP, the following software products use differential tables in the array:
• Business Copy XP
• ShadowImage for z/OS
• Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring
• Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2
• Flex Copy XP
• Auto LUN XP
If you use any of these software products in the same array, calculate the number of differential tables
Snapshot XP pairs can use by subtracting the number of differential tables the pairs use (migration plan
for Auto LUN XP) for these software products from the number of differential tables for the whole array.
For more information about calculating the number of required differential tables for Business Copy XP,
ShadowImage for z/OS, Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring, Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2, Flex
Copy XP, and Auto LUN XP, see the software product’s manual.
To calculate the number of differential tables for each Snapshot XP pair, use the following formula:
( (X) ÷ 256) ÷ (Z)
where:
(X) is the volume’s capacity (in kilobytes)
(Z) is the number of slots a differential table can manage (1,916 × 32)
You must round up the calculation result to the nearest whole number.
If the volume’s capacity ((X) in the previous formula) is 16 GB (16,777,216 KB), the number of differential
tables for each Snapshot XP pair is calculated as:
(16,777,216 ÷ 256) ÷ (1,916 × 32) = 1.06889
Round up 1.06889 to 2. Therefore, two differential tables are required to create a Snapshot XP pair.
Assume that no other software products use differential tables in an array where additional shared
memory is not installed. The number of differential tables that Snapshot XP can use is 13,652. To create
Snapshot pairs that require two differential tables for each pair, the calculation is as follows:
13,652 ÷ 2 = 6,826

22 Requirements for Snapshot XP operations

Therefore, you can create a maximum of 6,826 Snapshot XP pairs.

Using shared memory capacity for the virtual volume management area
The V-VOL management area consists of the following:
• Pool association information
• Pool management block
• Other management information (shared memory is fixed at 8 MB)
To calculate the maximum number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create for an array, use the following
formula:
{ ( (X) - 8) ÷ ( (α) + (β) ) }
where:
(X) is shared memory capacity for the whole V-VOL management area (in megabytes)
(α) is shared memory capacity for the pool association information (in bytes)
(β) is shared memory capacity for the pool management block (in bytes)
You should round off the calculation result to the nearest whole number.
The following is the calculation of the shared memory capacity of the pool association information (α) and
the shared memory capacity of the pool management block (β):

NOTE:
• You can check the shared memory capacity of the pool association information and pool management
block in the Snapshot XP pane (Figure 18).
• If all the V-VOL management area’s capacity is used by the pool management block and pool
association information, the capacity ratio of the pool management block and pool association
information in the V-VOL management area is fixed. For more information, see ”Creating virtual
volume management areas” on page 16.

(α) = ↑ ( (Y) ÷ 256) ↑ × 4 × 1.08

(β) = ↑ ( (Z) ÷ 256) ↑ × 32
where:
(Y) is pool-VOL’s capacity (in kilobytes)
(Z) is pool usage (in kilobytes)
You must round up the value enclosed by two upward arrows ( ↑ ) to the nearest whole number.

NOTE: When calculating a pool’s usage:

• When copying snapshot data to the pool, Snapshot XP always uses a multiple of 256 KB of the pool’s
capacity, even when the snapshot data is smaller than 256 KB.
• When snapshot data is stored consecutively, snapshot data capacity and pool usage is almost the
same. However, pool usage might be larger than snapshot data capacity when snapshot data is
stored randomly.

When shared memory capacity for the whole V-VOL management area ((X) in the previous formula) is
2,047 MB, pool-VOL capacity ((Y) in the previous formula) is 16 GB (16,777,216 KB), and pool usage
((Z) in the previous formula) is 1 GB (1,048,576 KB), the number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create for
an array is calculated as:
(2047 - 8) ÷ [ { (16,777,216 ÷ 256) × 4 × 1.08} + { (1,048,576 ÷ 256) × 32} ] = 5162.02933...
According to these results, you can create a maximum of 5,162 Snapshot XP pairs.

Snapshot XP user guide 23

Using the number of pair tables
Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2 and Snapshot XP pairs use pair tables to store control information
needed to manage pairs. To create an Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2 or Snapshot XP pair, you
need one pair table for each pair.
Usually, up to 32,768 pair tables are available in one array. However, if the relationship expansion
function, which is an Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2 function, is enabled, the maximum number of
available pair tables in one array is 1,048,575.
Among array software products, only Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2 and Snapshot XP use pair
tables. Therefore, if you use Hitachi FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2, calculate the number of available
pair tables for Snapshot XP pairs by subtracting the number of differential tables Hitachi FlashCopy
Mirroring Version 2 pairs use from the number of pair tables for the whole array.
For information about checking the number of pair tables Hitachi FlashCopy Version 2 uses (that is, the
number of existing Hitachi FlashCopy Version 2 pairs), see the Hitachi ShadowImage for z/OS user
guide.
For example, when the relationship expansion function is enabled and the number of pair tables Hitachi
FlashCopy Mirroring Version 2 uses is 30,000, calculate the number of Snapshot XP pairs you can create
for an array as follows.
32,768 - 30,000 = 2,768
According to this result, you can create a maximum of 2,768 Snapshot XP pairs.

24 Requirements for Snapshot XP operations

4 Using Snapshot XP
This chapter describes procedures for using Snapshot XP.
The first section describes the flow of Snapshot XP processes. The next section describes how the status of
a Snapshot XP pair changes while using Snapshot XP. The other sections provide information needed to
create pools and switch off the array’s power supply after you start using Snapshot XP.

Procedure for using Snapshot XP processes

Figure 3 Procedure for using Snapshot XP

To create pools and V-VOLs, use Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console. To create Snapshot XP
pairs and perform subsequent operations, use RAID Manager XP. You can also use Command View XP or
XP Remote Web Console to delete pairs. For more information, see ”Snapshot XP operations” on
page 37.

NOTE:
• Before creating a pool, you must create the virtual volume management area in shared memory.
Virtual volume management areas are automatically created when you install additional shared
memory. For more information about installing additional shared memory, contact your HP account
support representative.
• If you already created pools or Snapshot XP pairs for testing purposes before you actually start using
Snapshot XP for production purposes, HP recommends initializing the V-VOL management area
beforehand. For more information, see ”Initializing V-VOL management areas or pool management
blocks” on page 48.

You do not always need to delete Snapshot XP pairs after storing snapshot data in the pool. However,
since one P-VOL can be paired with up to 64 S-VOLs, you must delete the snapshot data or unnecessary
pairs. When deleting a Snapshot XP pair, the pair’s snapshot data is also deleted from the pool.

Snapshot XP user guide 25

If a failure occurs when restoring a Snapshot XP pair, the pair’s snapshot data is written back to the
P-VOL. You might not be able to restore the pair if another pair is being restored.
For more information about the status of Snapshot XP pairs and operations on pairs, see ”Status of
Snapshot XP pairs” on page 26.

Status of Snapshot XP pairs

When creating or splitting a Snapshot XP pair, the pair status changes. Figure 4 shows the transition of
the Snapshot XP pair status.

Figure 4 Snapshot XP pair status transition

1. If a volume is not assigned to a Snapshot XP pair, its status is SMPL.
2. Issue the paircreate command on the SMPL volume to create a Snapshot XP pair. When creating
the first pair for the P-VOL, the pair status changes to COPY. When the operation completes, the pair
status changes to PAIR.
If you specify a volume that is already paired with one or more S-VOLs as the P-VOL to create another
pair, the pair status does not change to COPY. When the operation completes, the pair status changes
to PAIR.

NOTE:
• If you execute the paircreate command immediately after deleting the P-VOL’s last snapshot
data, it might take time to create a new pair.
• If the pool capacity exceeds the threshold when a Snapshot XP pair is in PAIR status, the pair
status changes to PFUL in RAID Manager XP. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks
RAID Manager XP user guide.
• If you issue the paircreate command when the pool capacity exceeds the threshold, the
command is rejected and you cannot create the pair.

26 Using Snapshot XP
3. Issue the pairsplit command on the Snapshot XP pair in PAIR status to store the snapshot data in
the pool. When the operation completes, the pair status changes to PSUS.

NOTE: If the pool capacity exceeds the threshold when a Snapshot XP pair is in PSUS status, the
pair status changes to PFUS in RAID Manager XP. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks
RAID Manager XP user guide.

4. To delete only snapshot data and leave the Snapshot XP pair, issue the pairresync command for
the PSUS or PFUS pair. During the operation, the pair status changes to COPY(RS).
To delete the Snapshot XP pair, issue the pairsplit-S command or use Command View XP or XP
Remote Web Console. During the operation, the pair status changes to SMPL(PD).
5. To restore the pair, issue the pairresync-restore command on the Snapshot XP pair in PSUS
status. After that, the snapshot data is written back to the P-VOL. During the operation, the pair status
changes to COPY(RS-R). When the operation completes, the pair status changes to PAIR.
6. A pool can contain only a predefined amount of data. If the total capacity of the snapshot data in the
pool exceeds the pool capacity, the pair status changes to PSUE. The pair status also changes to PSUE
when a failure occurs while restoring the pair or when the pool usage rate reaches 100 percent. The
pair status might change to PSUE when a failure occurs during a process other than restoring.
Whether the host can read and write the Snapshot XP pair’s P-VOL or S-VOL depends on the pair status.
Table 6 shows the relationship between the pair status and availability of host access.

1. If the pair status changes to PSUE because a failure occurred during the restoration, the host cannot access that pair.

CAUTION: If the host computer uses application software to monitor the Snapshot XP pairs’ volumes,
problems, such as abnormal end, might occur. For example, since the S-VOL whose status is not PSUS (or
PFUS) rejects access from the host, a problem might occur on the monitoring application software whose
access is rejected. In addition, if the host computer connects to more than one port, a problem might also
occur on ports that are not connected to the S-VOL that rejected the host access. You must terminate the
application software monitoring the volumes to solve these problems.

Snapshot XP user guide 27

Use RAID Manager XP commands to operate Snapshot XP pairs. However, whether the operations
complete normally or not depends on the pair status. Table 7 shows the pair status and results of the RAID
Manager commands.

2. If you issue the pairresync command for a pair whose status has changed to PSUE because of a shortage of shared
memory for the V-VOL management area, the command is rejected and ends abnormally.

When the command executes the process and ends normally, the pair status changes according to the
process. For more information about how the pair status changes when the command ends normally, see
Figure 4 and the corresponding text.

Notes on creating pools

When creating pools, you must be careful about the pool capacity and types of volumes specified as
pool-VOLs. This section describes notes on pool capacity definitions and using external LUs as pool-VOLs.

Defining pool capacity

Pool capacity is the total capacity of pool volumes defined in the pool. If pool capacity is insufficient, the
status of Snapshot XP pairs could change to PSUE. When creating a pool, you must estimate the copy
capacity (for example, the capacity of snapshot data to be copied to the pool) and set enough pool
capacity for the estimated copy capacity. If copy capacity changes according to the time period, set
enough pool capacity for the largest copy capacity.

NOTE:
• When snapshot data is copied to a pool, a multiple of 256 KB of the pool is used. Even if the snapshot
data capacity is less than 256 KB, you need 256 KB in the pool for the data.
• If the same P-VOL area is updated more than once, snapshot data for the area is copied to the pool
only when the first update occurs. Therefore, when the same P-VOL area is updated only once, written
data capacity is equal to copied data capacity. However, when the same P-VOL area is updated
repeatedly, copy capacity is smaller than written data capacity.
• HP recommends using a volume with a capacity that is a multiple of 256 KB as a pool-VOL. If the
capacity of the volume specified as a pool-VOL is not a multiple of 256 KB, the capacity that is less
than 256 KB is rounded off. For example, if you add a volume with 100.125 MB as a pool-VOL,
125 KB is rounded off and the pool’s capacity increases by only 100 MB.

When estimating copy capacity, consider whether there is only one snapshot data or more than one
snapshot data.

28 Using Snapshot XP
• For one snapshot data
If the same P-VOL area is updated only once, copy capacity is equal to the capacity of data written
between storing and deleting snapshot data.
For example, to make a backup using Snapshot XP, you can back up S-VOL data after storing the
snapshot data, and then delete the snapshot data. In this case, only data written during the backup
must be copied to the pool, and there is only one snapshot data. Therefore, you can make a backup
with a pool with small capacity. However, since you must read a large amount of S-VOL data during
the backup, access to the P-VOL increases and, consequently, host I/O performance might be
reduced.
• For multiple snapshot data
After storing each snapshot data, if the same P-VOL area is updated only once until the snapshot data
is deleted, copy capacity is equal to the capacity of data written between storing and deleting the
snapshot data. If there is more than one P-VOL, copy capacity is equal to the total capacity of data
written to each P-VOL.

NOTE: When storing more than one snapshot data in the pool, some Snapshot XP pairs might share
snapshot data in the pool. While snapshot data is shared, you can delete pairs, but cannot delete shared
snapshot data from the pool. Shared snapshot data is not deleted from the pool until all Snapshot XP pairs
sharing the snapshot data are deleted.

Although you estimate copied data capacity and set pool capacity according to the information in this
section, if pool capacity exceeds the threshold, implement the measures described in ”Troubleshooting
Snapshot XP” on page 65.

Using external LUs as pool-VOLs

By using External Storage XP, you can connect multiple arrays to the XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 array.
In that case, the original XP12000/XP10000/SVS200 array is called the local array, and the connected
storage arrays are called external arrays. A volume in an external array is called an external LU. A
volume in the local array is called an internal storage virtualizer LDEV (referred to as an internal LDEV).
If External Storage XP is installed, you can use internal LDEVs and external LUs as pool-VOLs. However,
external LUs are more likely to fail than internal LDEVs. In addition, solutions for external LU failures are
more complicated than those for internal LDEV failures. To minimize the effects of failures,
HP recommends using external LUs as follows:
• Specify external LUs of only one external array for one pool
• Do not specify both internal LDEVs and external LUs as pool-VOLs in one pool
You can specify the external LUs of several external arrays for one pool, or use both internal LDEVs and
external LUs as pool-VOLs in one pool, but in that case, remember that problems such as volume blockade
can occur more easily. For example, if a problem occurs and the external LUs being used as a pool-VOL
are blocked, the pool becomes blocked as well. For more information, see ”Recovering blocked pools” on
page 68.
For more information about external arrays and solutions for errors related to external LUs, see the
HP StorageWorks External Storage XP user guide.

Notes on using Snapshot XP

This section describes switching off the power supply and replacing the microprogram offline while
Snapshot XP is in use.

Switching off the power supply

Before switching off the power supply while Snapshot XP is running, stop host I/O operations. When
switching on the power supply, Snapshot XP behaves differently depending on whether information in
shared memory remains before and after switching off the power supply.
• If information in shared memory remains before and after switching off the power supply

Snapshot XP user guide 29

You can usually use the pools and Snapshot XP pairs you used before switching off the power.
However, since the array checks the status of pools and pool volumes, if pool volumes are blocked at
that time, the pool is blocked and the status of Snapshot XP pairs changes to PSUE. When this occurs,
you must recover the pools after switching on the power. For more information, see ”Recovering
blocked pools” on page 68.
• If information in shared memory is lost after switching off the power supply
The array has a battery to maintain information in shared memory. However, when a certain time
period elapses after the breaker is turned off, the battery dies and information in shared memory is
lost. If information in shared memory is lost after switching off the power supply, information about
pools and Snapshot XP pairs is erased. Therefore, you must create pools and pairs again after
switching on the power.
For more information about the amount of time before information in shared memory is lost when the
breaker is turned off, contact your HP account support representative.

Replacing the microprogram offline

Replacing the microprogram is usually performed online, but in some cases, such as when the shared
memory configuration must be changed, replacing the microprogram is performed offline. If you replace
the microprogram offline, pool information or Snapshot XP pair information in shared memory is lost.
Therefore, you must create pools and pairs again after replacing the microprogram.

Combining Snapshot XP with other software products

You can create Snapshot XP pairs by sharing volumes with other products, such as Business Copy XP or
Continuous Access XP. In addition, you can create Snapshot XP pairs using volumes to which LUN
Security XP Extension or RAID Manager XP have assigned attributes. Table 8 shows whether or not
Snapshot XP pairs can share volumes with other software products.

1. A Business Copy XP and Snapshot XP pair cannot have the same mirror unit (MU) number. For example, if the Business Copy
XP pair’s MU number is 0, you cannot create a Snapshot XP pair whose MU number is 0 and whose P-VOL is also used as a
Business Copy XP P-VOL. Also, if the Snapshot XP pair’s MU number is 1, you cannot create a Business Copy XP pair whose MU
number is 1 and whose P-VOL is also used as a Snapshot XP P-VOL.

30 Using Snapshot XP
NOTE:
• You need LUN Security XP Extension to set the Read Only attribute, Protect attribute, S-VOL Disable, or
VMA. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks LUN Security XP Extension user guide.
• You need RAID Manager XP to set extents, Zero Read Capacity, or Invisible attribute. For more
information, see the HP StorageWorks RAID Manager XP user guide.
• You can check if the volume has the Read Only attribute, Protect attribute, S-VOL Disable, VMA,
extents, Zero Read Capacity attribute, or Invisible attribute by accessing the LUN Security XP Extension
pane. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks LUN Security XP Extension user guide.

When Snapshot XP shares volumes with the software products shown in Table 8, some operations are
restricted according to the pair statuses.

Combining Snapshot XP with Auto LUN XP

Regardless of the status of Auto LUN XP’s migration plans (Auto LUN XP pairs), you cannot perform any
Snapshot operations on the volume the migration plan uses. To use a Snapshot XP P-VOL as the migration
plan’s source volume, you must create the Snapshot XP pair first, and then create the migration plan.
When the Snapshot XP P-VOL and migration plan’s source volume are shared, you can execute the
migration plan only when the Snapshot XP pair is in PAIR status. Deleting and canceling the migration
plan are always allowed. These operations are not affected by the Snapshot XP pair status.
For more information about the status of migration plans and Auto LUN XP operations, see the
HP StorageWorks Auto LUN XP user guide for the XP12000/XP10000.

Combining Snapshot XP with LUN Security XP Extension

LUN Security XP Extension can set four kinds of access attributes on the volumes: Read/Write, Read Only,
Protect, and S-VOL Disable. Snapshot XP cannot create a pair by specifying a volume whose access
attribute is S-VOL Disable as the S-VOL. In addition, if the S-VOL Disable attribute is set on the Snapshot
XP pair’s P-VOL, you cannot restore the pair.
By using LUN Security XP Extension, you can set the Read/Write, Read Only, Protect, or S-VOL Disable
attribute on volumes that Snapshot XP pairs already use. However, when the pair is in the following
statuses, you cannot set the S-VOL Disable attribute on the pair volumes:

34 Using Snapshot XP
• COPY
• SMPL(PD)
• COPY(RS)
• COPY(RS-R)
• PSUE

NOTE: You can set S-VOL Disable on the P-VOL even if the pair status is COPY, SMPL(PD), COPY(RS), or
PSUE.

For more information about setting the access attribute, see the HP StorageWorks LUN Security XP
Extension user guide.

3. Click OK. The selected V-VOL group’s icon changes to an icon indicating the deleting process.
4. Click Apply. A confirmation message appears.
5. Click OK. The confirmation message closes, and the V-VOL group is deleted in the array.

NOTE: You cannot delete the V-VOL if it is used as a Snapshot XP pair’s S-VOL. To delete a V-VOL
used as an S-VOL, first delete the pair.

Creating Snapshot XP pairs

Use the RAID Manager XP paircreate command to create Snapshot XP pairs. To create Snapshot XP
pairs, the following are required:
• Specify a volume that meets the requirements in Table 2 as a P-VOL
• Specify a volume that meets the requirements in Table 3 as an S-VOL
• Specify the same size volumes as a P-VOL and S-VOL
• Specify the same pool for pairs that share a P-VOL when you use a volume that is already used as
another pair’s P-VOL for the new pair’s P-VOL
For more information about the paircreate command, see the HP StorageWorks RAID Manager XP
user guide.

Storing snapshot data

Use the RAID Manager XP pairsplit command to store snapshot data in the pool. You can store a
maximum of 64 snapshot data per P-VOL. To store snapshot data, the pair status must be PAIR.

NOTE: When a P-VOL is paired with two or more volumes, ensure that none of the pairs are in
COPY(RS-R) status.

You can use the pairsplit command to store one snapshot data at a time, but you cannot specify the
snapshot data ID. For more information about the pairsplit command, see the HP StorageWorks RAID
Manager XP user guide.

NOTE: Snapshot XP does not support Quick Split mode. If you specify Quick Split mode, snapshot data
is not be stored in the pool even if the command ends normally.

Restoring Snapshot XP pairs

Use the RAID Manager XP pairresync -restore command to restore Snapshot XP pairs. The
Snapshot XP pair must be in PSUS status when you restore the pair.
When the restoration is complete, the pair status changes to PAIR. For more information about the
pairresync -restore command, see the HP StorageWorks RAID Manager XP user guide.

CAUTION: If a failure occurs during the restoration, the pair status changes to PSUE. To recover the
PSUE pair, delete the pair’s snapshot data. When you recover the PSUE pair by deleting its snapshot
data, the P-VOL’s data is not guaranteed. Therefore, you must overwrite the P-VOL with backup data or
format the P-VOL.

NOTE: Snapshot XP does not support Quick Restore mode. If you specify Quick Restore mode, the
Snapshot XP pair is not restored even if the command ends normally.

Snapshot XP user guide 55

Deleting snapshot data
Use the RAID Manager XP pairresync command to delete snapshot data. You can store up to 64
snapshot data per P-VOL. Therefore, to store new snapshot data for a P-VOL that already has 64 snapshot
data, you must delete old snapshot data.
If you delete snapshot data, free area in the pool increases. To delete snapshot data, issue the
pairresync command on Snapshot XP pairs in PSUS status. If the snapshot data shares a data area
with another snapshot data, only the snapshot ID is deleted; the data itself is not deleted from the pool.
For more information about the pairresync command, see the HP StorageWorks RAID Manager XP
user guide.

NOTE: Snapshot XP does not support Quick Resync mode. If you specify Quick Resync mode, snapshot
data is not deleted even if the command ends normally.

Deleting Snapshot XP pairs

Use the RAID Manager XP command or Pairsplit-S pane to delete Snapshot XP pairs.
If you use RAID Manager XP to delete Snapshot XP pairs, you must use the pairsplit -S command. By
using this command, you can delete only one pair at a time. For more information about the pairsplit
-S command, see the HP StorageWorks RAID Manager XP user guide.
If you use the Pairsplit-S pane, you can delete multiple pairs at one time. You can open the Pairsplit-S
pane either from the Business Copy XP main pane or the Snapshot XP pane. To select pairs to be deleted
by port, host group, iSCSI target, or LUN, open the Pairsplit-S pane from the Business Copy XP main
pane. To select pairs by pool, open the Pairsplit-S pane from the Snapshot XP pane.

A pool is blocked. Causes:

• Pool-VOLs are blocked.
Solutions:
• Implement the measures in ”Recovering blocked pools” on page 68.
In addition, after the problem is solved, you must complete the SIMs.
If you do not, new SIMs cannot occur, even if a pool is blocked
again. For more information, see ”Completing pool-related SIMs”
on page 69.

Pool usage rate exceeds the threshold. Causes:

• Too much snapshot data is stored in the pool.
• Pool capacity is too small.
• Pool threshold is too small.
Solutions:
• Delete snapshot data that is less important or delete old snapshot
data to decrease the pool usage rate. See ”Restoring Snapshot XP
pairs” on page 55.
• Add some pool volumes to increase the pool capacity. See
”Creating new pools” on page 45.
• Set the pool threshold to a larger value. See ”Changing pool
information” on page 47.
In addition, after the problem is solved, you must complete the SIMs. If
you do not, new SIMs cannot occur, even if the usage rate exceeds the
threshold again. For more information, see ”Completing pool-related
SIMs” on page 69.

NOTE: You need unused volumes to add pool volumes. If there are no
unused volumes, create new volumes or contact your HP account
support representative to add hard disks. Therefore, it might take time to
solve the problem.

Cannot add pool-VOLs. Causes:

• 1,024 pool-VOLS are already set in the pool.
• Available pool management block in the V-VOL management area
(which is in shared memory) is insufficient.
Solutions:
• Add pool-VOLs to another pool. See ”Creating new pools” on
page 45.
• Initialize the V-VOL management area. See ”Initializing V-VOL
management areas” on page 48.

restored successfully.
You can also recover the pool by doing one of the following:
• Add some pool-VOLs (see ”Creating new pools” on page 45).
• Delete snapshot data to decrease the pool’s usage rate (see ”Deleting snapshot data” on page 56).
• Delete Snapshot XP pairs to decrease the usage rate of the pool (see ”Deleting Snapshot XP pairs” on
page 56).
Usage rate and pool status appears in the Pool Information box in the Pool pane. Use the information in
the box to decide how many pool volumes to add or which snapshot data to delete.
Recovering Snapshot XP pairs
When the pool is blocked, the status of all Snapshot XP pairs that have snapshot data stored in the pool
changes to PSUE. To recover PSUE pairs, delete those pairs. For more information about deleting pairs,
see ”Deleting Snapshot XP pairs” on page 56.

Recovering V-VOLs
When the V-VOL is blocked, contact your HP account support representative.

Completing pool-related SIMs

When the pool’s usage rate exceeds the threshold or when the pool is blocked, the following Service
Information Messages (SIMs) occur:
• When the usage rate of the pool exceeds the threshold: Reference code 6000XX
• When the pool is blocked: Reference code 6001XX
XX indicates the pool ID. For more information about SIM reference codes, contact your HP account
support representative. You can reference SIMs occurring in the array through Command View XP or XP
Remote Web Console. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks Command View XP user guide for
XP Disk Arrays or the HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console user guide for
XP12000/XP10000/SVS200.
To complete SIMs that occur when the pool’s usage rate exceeds the threshold or when the pool is
blocked:

NOTE: If you complete a SIM, the SIM’s status changes to completed. After the problem that caused the
SIM is solved, complete the SIM and change its status to completed.

1. Change the status of the pool whose usage rate exceeded the threshold to normal, and restore the
blocked pool to change its status to normal.
For more information about solutions when the pool usage rate exceeds the threshold and the pool is
blocked, see Table 23.
2. Click the Volume Manager button. The Volume Manager pane appears.
3. Change Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console to Modify mode. For instructions, see the
HP StorageWorks Command View XP user guide for XP Disk Arrays or the HP StorageWorks XP
Remote Web Console user guide for XP12000/XP10000/SVS200.
4. Select the Pool tab. The Pool pane appears.
5. Select the SIM Complete Request check box.
6. Click Apply. A confirmation message appears.
7. Click OK. The confirmation message closes, and the SIM complete process begins. It takes time if there
are many SIMs to be completed.
You can check whether the SIMs are completed successfully in Command View XP or XP Remote Web
Console. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks Command View XP user guide for XP Disk
Arrays or the HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console user guide for XP12000/XP10000/SVS200.
