JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Community Nutritionist / Dietitian linked to Stop


Smoking Service

Salary Scale: £23,500 - £31,800

Reports to: Food Partnership Manager

Accountable to: Food Partnership Board

Base: Emmaus Manor Offices, Portslade

Post term: Permanent

JOB PURPOSE

Work with the local Stop Smoking Service to support individuals and / or groups from
low income and other priority areas in healthy eating, weight maintenance and physical
activity, during and after the 4 week quit period.

Contribute to action to reduce obesity and overweight among children and adults in the
City, including the provision of on-going support and tailored advice around weight
management for people who are giving up smoking and the delivery of community
weight management programmes.

Offer specialist nutritional advice and support to organisations and groups across the
city where this supports health promotion initiatives and aims to reduce inequalities in
health.

Develop, support and lead work with identified groups and organisations in priority
neighbourhoods to implement Spade to Spoon: Brighton and Hove Food Strategy and
Action Plan (summer, 2006), Choosing Health (DH, 2006), Healthy Weight, Healthy
Lives (COI, 2008) and the forthcoming local Child Obesity Strategy (summer 2008).

DIMENSIONS

• To Work across Brighton and Hove (population approx 260,000) and be


responsible for a potential programme budget of £10,000.

• The Food Partnership works with a wide range of statutory, community, business
and voluntary sector organisations and workers across the city.

KEY RESULT AREAS

1. To support the Food Partnership in implementing the health related aspects of


Spade to Spoon: Brighton and Hove Food Strategy and Action Plan (summer
2006), the local Child Obesity Strategy (summer 2008), Choosing Health (DH,
2006) and Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives (COI, 2008).

2. To lead the implementation of agreed relevant action points contained in the City
Food Strategy and Action Plan (e.g. through advising, negotiating, networking,
training, influencing, and service development) and the relevant actions in the
Choosing Health White Paper, Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives and the
forthcoming Child Obesity Strategy.

3. To provide effective nutritional and dietetic advice to individuals and groups


referred from the Stop Smoking Service and / or Dietetics Team based on
clinical evidence and best practice.

4. Work with people who are giving up smoking at different life stages, from
maternal health through to the health of older people, within a range community
settings including workplaces, schools, children’s centres and community
organisations.

5. To contribute to action to reducing obesity and overweight among children and


adults in the City, including the development, implementation and delivery of
local weight maintenance programmes for quitters and other groups.

6. To assess the need for, and as appropriate, to develop, co-ordinate, deliver and
evaluate relevant training courses, programmes and other learning opportunities
on a range of nutritional issues for local communities and professionals.

7. To develop, negotiate and facilitate a shared programme of work between


existing and new community food initiatives within neighbourhoods and
communities which will promote joined up working and learning across the city.
This will include contributing to the Food Partnership newsletter.

8. Identify solutions to barriers to achieving a healthy, affordable diet in target areas


by influencing, networking and working with residents, community organisations,
local agencies and local businesses.

9. To keep up to date with current developments and initiatives at a local and


national level relating to food poverty, food and health, nutritional education, food
production, sustainability, public procurement and the catering sector.
10. To facilitate and support the evaluation of projects and initiatives in order to
enable them to be accountable and to share good practice.

11. To contribute to the development and delivery of the Healthy City Approach and
other city-wide strategies and action plans which reflect a diverse and cross-
cutting agenda on food issues.

12. Undertake other relevant work as required by the Food Partnership Manager and
agreed with your Line Manager.

COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS


1. Regular supervision sessions and annual appraisals with Line Manager
2. Quarterly performance monitoring sessions with Line Manager, Food Partnership
Manager and PCT Contract Manager.
3. Operate as Food Partnership Team member wider Health Economy.
4. Build links with wider food networks locally, regionally and nationally.
5. Attend Food Team meetings, Food Partnership office meetings and provide a
quarterly report to the Board.
6. Liaise and work with groups and individuals, at all levels, within and outside the
Food Partnership, including community, voluntary, statutory and private sectors.
7. To network and collaborate with other food and health workers within the City to
share good practice, skills development and the development of shared projects.

The postholder must comply with relevant corporate governance requirements,

accountability.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) it is the responsibility of individual

affected by their acts at work. This includes co-operating with management in

reporting promptly any defects, risks or potential hazards.

NO SMOKING POLICY
The Food Centre operates a no smoking policy and staff and visitors are not allowed to
smoke anywhere on the premises.
