INTRODUCTION

Pollution is when the land, the air, water, or anywhere on earth gets contaminated.

Contamination means that something is dirty, grimy, and impure. All the different types of

pollution on our earth that are caused by humans are contaminating the environment and not

making it fit for use or at least they are decreasing the efficiency of it. Pollution can be found

everywhere on the globe, even in the Polar Regions. Pollution destroys and harms not only the

air, the water, and the environment, but also humans, animals, and plants. Pollution affects us

all.

There are many different types of pollution, though not all types of pollution can be

seen. However, they all harm our ecosystem. An ecosystem includes all living organisms and

how they interact together and with their environment. The types of pollution that affect us can

be classified into four main types. They are:

(a) Air Pollution (c) Land Pollution

(b) Sound Pollution (d) Water Pollution

TYPES OF POLLUTION

The major forms of pollution are listed below along with the particular pollutants

relevant to each of them.

 Air pollution, the release of chemicals and particulates into the atmosphere. Common
gaseous air pollutants include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
and nitrogen oxides produced by industry and motor vehicles.
Photochemical ozone and smog are created as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons react to
sunlight.

 Sound pollution, which encompasses roadway noise, aircraft noise, industrial noise as well
as high-intensity sonar.

 Land Pollution, when something happens to the soil or land that it no longer can keep its
growth rate or if something disturbs the natural balance of growth in that land.

 Water pollution, by the release of waste products and contaminants into surface runoff into
river drainage systems, leaching into groundwater, liquid
spills, wastewater discharges, eutrophication and littering.

AIR POLLUTION
Air Pollution is anything that contaminates the natural composition of the chemistry of

the air. This means that anything that disturbs the natural state of our atmosphere is considered

air pollution. Examples of things that might contaminate the air is if there are too many gases or

smoke or other vapors that cannot through a natural process be removed and cleared away. Air

pollution is the introduction of

chemicals, particulate matter, or biological

materials that cause harm or discomfort to

humans or other living organisms, or cause

damage to the natural environment or built environment, into the atmosphere. The atmosphere is

a complex dynamic natural gaseous system that is essential to support life on planet Earth.

Stratospheric ozone depletion due to air pollution has long been recognized as a threat to human

health as well as to the Earth's ecosystems.

The factors that contribute to this pollution are vehicle exhaust, which is the smoke that

comes out of the exhaust pipe in cars, deforestation and forest fires because this destroys a main

source of oxygen; smoke and gases from factories and industries. Air pollution comes from lots

of different sources. The main ones are industry and traffic. It is partly caused by particulates in

the air. Particulates (or particulate matter) are simply

small particles of a variety of substances such as soot. Some

particulates are formed from dust and pollen and other

organic stuff. Other particulates come from chemical sources

such as the combustion of fuels (industrial processes and traffic). Nitrogen oxides are a very

reactive group of gases which are released into the atmosphere whenever fuels are burnt. This

means that every time you fire up the central heating, or take the car down to the shops, you are
2

contributing to the problem. These gases react with the particulates and other chemicals.

Nitrogen oxides also cause that reddish haze that you can often see hanging in the air near the

horizon on warm days.

SOUND POLLUTION

Sound pollution can be defined as unwanted or offensive sounds that unreasonably

intrude into our daily activities. It has many sources, most of which are associated with urban

development: road, air and rail transport, industrial sound, neighborhood and recreational sound

or any man-made sound that penetrates the environment is sound pollution.

Sound pollution can be caused by highways, factories, concerts, or any

other sound source. It can interfere with the natural cycles of animals, which

may change their migration paths to avoid the sound. Perhaps the most

extreme damage caused by sound pollution is the death of marine mammals by the rupturing of

various tissues and organs, brought on by extremely loud (up to 200 decibels) sound from

military SONAR.

Sound pollution is also becoming huge problem for many animals, especially animals

that lives in our oceans and seas. Because of the increased ship traffic and offshore oil drilling

sound pollution has started affecting very large number of marine animals. Whales and dolphins

are among animals most affected by sound pollution. This is because they use their sense of

hearing for many purposes such as hunting for prey, navigation, migration and distinguishing the

members of the same species and with so many artificial sounds in our oceans they are having

tough time to distinguish them all.

LAND POLLUTION

Land or Soil Pollution is when something happens to the soil or land that it no longer can

keep its growth rate or if something disturbs the natural balance of growth in that land. The

balance can be in terms of planting crops, or preserving the animals and wildlife, or just making

sure that the natural environment is kept pure as

it is without anything contaminating it. The

factors that can contribute to this pollution

are oil spills, sewage and waste dumping; the

mishandling of solid waste, which is garbage,

deforestations; pesticides and use of other

chemicals, deforestation as that reduces the amount of oxygen produced. The effects are

desertification, which means that good cultivation land can turn into deserts, a decrease in crops,

wildlife becoming extinct or dying.

Here are step how to minimize land pollution. Recycle paper and plastic items.

Sometimes the most convenient thing to do is to throw away all trash in the regular trash can.

When a product has the potential to be recycled, however, there is no reason to dispose of it with

the other trash. Recycling is not only beneficial to the environment,

but it also minimizes land pollution because these materials are kept out

of landfills and do not use pesticides. These chemicals can

damage crops as well as the soil in which the crops grow. You can

minimize land pollution by using natural pest-control products rather than the harsh chemicals.

The natural pest control-products can be found at gardening stores. Another method for pest

5

control is to use insects. Ladybugs, for example, are proficient at controlling the accumulation of

unwanted pests within the garden.

WATER POLLUTION
Water Pollution is when the water is no longer pure and contains bacteria or chemical

impurities. All these impurities decrease and lower the quality of the water and can have serious

effects on the marine life. Water pollution happens in oceans, rivers, lakes, and even in fresh

water and water reservoirs. Water pollution is

the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes,

rivers, oceans and groundwater). Water

pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged

directly or indirectly into water bodies without

adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution affects plants and organisms

living in these bodies of water; and, in almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to

individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.

Water pollution has extremely negative impact on many animals. Water polluted with

different chemicals can cause decline of population in some species (such as frog), while on the

other hand water polluted with nutrients can lead to

huge growth of toxic algae which when eaten by

other animals may cause serious diseases and death

to these animals. The factors that contribute to

this factors are littering in the water, sewage, excessive use of fertilizers washed away in

waters, thus affecting the marine life like oil spills from tankers and ships in waters such

chemicals reaching or washing away in waters or water supplies. The effect are decrease in

drinking water, decrease in quality of water, and serious harm to marine life.

7
SABK Maa’had Ehyak Dininah Islamiah - Pollution

Here some of the overviews of main health effects on human from some common types of
pollution.

Adverse air quality can kill many organisms including humans. Ozone pollution can

cause respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, throat inflammation, chest pain,

and congestion. Water pollution causes approximately 14,000 deaths per day, mostly due to

contamination of drinking water by untreated sewage in developing countries. An estimated 700

million Indians have no access to a proper toilet, and 1,000 Indian children die of diarrheal

sickness every day. Nearly 500 million Chinese lack access to safe drinking water. 656,000

people die prematurely each year in China because of air pollution. In India, air pollution is

believed to cause 527,700 fatalities a year. Studies have estimated that the number of people

killed annually in the US could be over 50,000.

Oil spills can cause skin irritations and rashes. Noise pollution induces hearing loss, high

blood pressure, stress, and sleep disturbance. Mercury has been linked to developmental

deficits in children and neurologic symptoms. Older people are majorly exposed to diseases

induced by air pollution. Those with heart or lung disorders are under additional risk. Children

and infants are also at serious risk. Lead and other heavy metals have been shown to cause

9
SABK Maa’had Ehyak Dininah Islamiah - Pollution

neurological problems. Chemical and radioactive substances can cause cancer and as well

as birth defects.

POLLUTION CONTROL
Pollution control is a term used in environmental management. It means the control of

emissions and effluents into air, water or soil. Without pollution

control, the waste products from consumption, heating, agriculture,

mining, manufacturing, transportation and other human

activities, whether they accumulate or disperse, will degrade

the environment. In the hierarchy of controls, pollution prevention and waste minimization are

more desirable than pollution control.

Most types of pollution are linked and people all around the world need to make more

careful choices about how they should live their lives to ensure that they are trying to prevent

increasing pollution. To prevent pollution, it demands that people

make changes in how they handle waste for example, or what kind of

chemicals they are using for their soil, or how and where they are throwing

garbage. People need to realize that their actions affect not only humans,

but also plants and animals. People need to make sure that they maintain and preserve the

natural balance of the planet.

You also can help to reduce global air pollution and climate change by driving a car that

gets at least 35 miles a gallon, walking, bicycling, and using mass transit when possible. Replace

incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, make your home more energy efficient,

and buy only energy efficient appliances. Recycle newspapers, aluminum, and other materials.

Plant trees and avoid purchasing products such as Styrofoam that contain CFCs. Support much

3

stricter clean air laws and enforcement of international treaties to reduce ozone depletion and

slow global warming.

CONCLUSION

By reducing all forms of environmental pollution on our planet we could save millions of
animals but sadly world is currently not doing enough, and pollution issue is therefore constantly
growing in size. Add to this climate change and deforestation and you'll soon realize why so
many animals are finding it very hard to survive.

Earth is everybody's home and nobody likes living in a dirty home. Together, we can

make the earth a cleaner, healthier and more pleasant place to live.

How does pollution affect
animals?

Many
animals are dying because of
pollution. All types of
environmental pollution have
negative impact on animal's
health, and the worst types of
pollution are air, water and noise
pollution. Even small levels of
environmental pollution create
discomfort for many animals
while on the other hand more
excessive pollution leads to
diseases and deaths of animals.

Many people ignore the fact that

our planet is now polluted more
than ever before, and that many
animals are dying because of it.
They fail to see the importance of
these animals, and
underestimate the importance of
biodiversity in general.
Biodiversity is the key to human
well being, and we should be
definitely doing more to stop

a serious threat to our own
survival.

What is the worst kind of
pollution?

When
discussing the worst kind of
pollution people talk about either
water pollution or air pollution.
Water pollution and air pollution
not only harm our environment
but also our health. Recent
estimates say that around 15,000
people in the world die each day
because of the water pollution,
while according to the data from
the World Health Organization
2.4 million people in the world die
each year because of the air
pollution.

Waste water and sewage waste

are the two biggest causes of
water pollution. World population
is increasing each year, which
means that each year there is
more waste compared to
previous year(s). According to
recent estimates world generates
400 billion tons of industrial
waste each year, plenty of which
ends up in different water bodies
causing huge environmental and
health damage.

Despite the fact that we now live

in the 21st century there is still
more than billion people
worldwide who lack access to
safe drinking water, and more
than two billion people in the
world live without proper
