Collect

The process begins as the streets of perth are

walked, allowing the urban environment to instruct
movement within the city. This form of navigation
is carried out without a map or navigational
agenda, the process somewhat in opposition
to the increased mindless navigating by use of
satellite navigation. This form of movement within
the urban environment could be though of as
an example of almost complete disconnection
between people and place. The process is similar
Collect:Collections:Collective
Theory of Dérive
to the practice of dérive, a process developed as
a method of working practice by the situationists.
“A mode of experimental behavior linked to the
conditions of urban society: A technique of rapid
passage through varied ambiances.”1

The collection is focused around the strange

attraction and repulsion of redundant space.
Treating the city as an archive, the collected
instances of redundancy are collect in a manor
so as to represent the city as an archive. The act
of performing such a task draws the attention
of the public, mostly bewildered to why such
an instance would be tagged. Most of the tags
remain months after their initial placement, an
illustration of the dormant, unnoticed nature of
the collected instances. The exercise draws the
beginning of a new attention to the redundant
space. The collection is never perceived as
something that could be finished, avoiding the
potential for the process to become exhaustive.
The collecting exists as fragments, drawn out
from the process of dérive.

George Inn lane, opening up to a courtyard with

access to the upper room via a stair core. The rooms

urban block. Although the site is publicly accessible,
its redundant state hides it away from public site. The
room was once used as a gathering point for City
officials in times of trouble.

Built in 1807, St Pauls was the first new church in Perth
since the middle ages as a result of Perth population
growth from 9000 in 1755 to 20000 in 1793. The
majority of Perth’s population live in the suburbs and as
a result, St Pauls has become redundant, yet still has
a huge presence on the High street. The last service
took place 1986
