Living things are both similar to and different from each other and non-
living things.

Strand:
1.1e: Cells are organized for more effective functioning in multicellular
organisms. Levels of organization for structure and function of a multi-
cellular organism include cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.

1.1g: Multicellular animals often have similar organs and specialized

systems for carrying out major life activities.

Objective: By the end of the class students will be able to:

• To identify the major body parts, organs and systems
• To explain how the various body systems function and work
together
as demonstrated by
• Student contributions to group brainstorming activity
• Student completion of group dissections
• Student completion of group Webspiration charts
• Student polling on online quiz

Teacher and Student Activities

Do Now (Activator):
Students are to respond to the Essential Question, “How does your
body work?” in their science journals. Allow time for students to reflect
and write, and then ask students to share their thoughts. When
students have offered 5-8 answers, conclude their answers and segue
into the following: “Today we will begin a new unit, which focuses on
the human body. In this unit, you will learn the different parts of the
body and how it works.“

Hook / Intro:
Proceed to “Did You Know?” Trivia activity. Prepare a collection of note
cards that have interesting trivia about the human body and the body
systems. As students enter the room at the beginning of class,
randomly hand a card to a student. Instruct selected students to hold
onto the card until you call on them to read the card aloud. Keep a list
of names of students you gave out the cards to and call on them one
by one, or ask them all to stand up and read aloud their cards when it
is time for the trivia activity.

Begin the “Did You Know?” activity with the following:

“The human body is the most fascinating machine in existence. I call it
a machine because it is made up of many different systems that work
together to make sure the entire body functions. Our classroom
computer is an example of a machine. It is made of different parts—the
screen, the keyboard, the mouse, the tower, and the printer. All of
these different parts work together so that I can do my work and put in
your grades.

How many of you have seen the inside of the computer? It is strange
because a lot of us own computers, but we don’t really know what goes
