GSM based Fantasy House

Background and Objectives:

GSM - Global System for Mobile Communications is the emerging technology,

which uses the strength of the SMS (Short Messaging Services) and is a cheap wireless
control option, which can be, connected anywhere, where a GSM network is present. To
demonstrate the strength and ease of controllability through the SMS we plan to make a
model of house in which we can control devices and the master can be confirmed with an
SMS. Everyone fantasizes about staying in a home where everything is automatically
controlled and we just enjoy the show.

Proposed Methodology:
This project aims at building a Smart Futuristic Home where all the devices are
controlled through a Micro-controller, the parameters for which in turn are passed
through the PC over the RS232 Channel. These devices can be switched ON/OFF at
regular intervals of time and can also be controlled by sending an SMS.
This project is a combination of a Scheduler and a Profile Controlled Home.
This is the latest technology, which enables us to sit anywhere and control the devices at
the remote end, which are in a GSM network area and are connected to a GSM MODEM.
In a typical scenario a Short Message is sent to the remote end and the contents of
the SMS are then decoded the first part of the SMS is supposed to be carrying an
authenticator (say a pass-code) and then the command. For e.g. “<passcode> <open
door>”, will open a door.
The door opening Mechanism can be demonstrated by using:
a. Motor for Retractable Doors (employing stepper motor) or
b. Magnetic Lock (optional)
These commands will be having an entry at the remote end also and whenever a
message is received the pattern recognition code will get activated and will search for the
authenticator and the command. Depending on the command the individual component/
device can be activated/ deactivated.
There can be another feature, which will be able to sense and send the current
status of the devices.
The Profiling of the house is controlled by sending a message and can support up
to 8 profiles.

Here the database can be maintained in Notepad form or My-SQL, to facilitate the
knowledge of current status of the devices to the system.
Expected Results:
Everyone fantasizes about staying in a home where everything is automatically
controlled and we just enjoy the show. So by implementing this project we are turning the
dream into reality.
The profiling is especially useful when we wish that the house should behave
differently for different occasion. Some of the profiles that can be supported can be:
a. Secured
b. Out of House
c. Party
d. Some Members
e. Friends Visiting
f. Parents Visiting
g. Alone in home Etc.
The system can control devices depending on the Scheduling or the Profiling. The
Devices to be controlled can be any of the electrical components and typically are:
a. Bulbs
b. Geyser
c. Fan
d. AC point
e. Music Systems
f. Sprinkler Etc.
