A walk through Moorestown’s
tree-lined streets can make one
fully aware that the township val-
ues a commitment to urban
forestry. This is one of the rea-
sons the township has continual-
proclamation.

Foundation’s Web site, there are
167 Tree City USA communities
throughout the state.
This year, Moorestown has re-
ceived the distinction for the 21st
time, making it the second
Burlington County town to re-
ceive the award the longest after
Medford, which has received the
distinction 31 times.
To be branded as a Tree City
USA community, a municipality
has to meet four standards, which
have been established by The
Arbor Day Foundation and the
National Association of State
Foresters. Communities must
have a tree board or department
in place, as well as a tree care or-
dinance, a comprehensive com-
munity forestry program, and a
yearly Arbor Day observance and
ronmental, economical and
health benefits to millions of peo-
ple each day, and we applaud com-
munities that make planting and
caring for trees a top priority.”
According to the Arbor Day
Foundation, communities that re-
ceive the Tree City USA title ben-
efit because the four standards as-
sociated with receiving the dis-
tinction lead a community to-
ward annual, systematic manage-
ment of its trees.
Other benefits include helping
to educate the community about
its tree resources, and boosting
the community’s public image
and citizens’ pride. There is also
preference given to Tree City
USA communities over other
communities for consideration of
grants for tree and forestry pro-
grams.

Joe McGovern, Sr. was known
around town as the Bandanna
Man of Moorestown. An avid
runner whom friends called “Big
McGov,” he was the type of guy
who enjoyed having a cup of cof-
fee with neighbors, or taking a
walk along his property on East
Central Avenue – a place he called
his little piece of heaven on earth.
When Joe passed away this
March at the age of 51, his wife,
Lisa McGovern, said their home
was no longer the happy place it
had once been.
But, thanks to a few good
Moorestonians who teamed up to
help a neighbor in a time of need,
Lisa said her house is looking
happier these days.
The Fullerton Park rebuild was
happening just a few miles away,
but a quiet army lead by Lisa
Rosenthal, Michelle D’Angelo,
and Jay Dever, toiled away on a
different project – landscaping
the McGoverns’ house.
The neighbors asked other
members of the community to
stop by the McGoverns’ home re-
cently with gardening tools,
mulch, and a ready-to-work atti-
tude.
The landscaping began when
Dever showed up to mow the Mc-
Governs lawn. Then, volunteers
worked together to cut and re-
move trees, shrubs, and bushes;
and clean out, mulch, and plant
flowerbeds.
“Lisa Michelle and the army of
many transformed this house
from a miserable state of disre-
pair to a happy and vibrant place
to live,” McGovern said.
The turnout for the project was
so good in fact that the volunteers
were able to tackle both the front
and back yards.
McGovern, who is unable to do
physical labor due to years of
complicated surgeries, said the
project her neighbors and friends
did probably would have cost
about $2,000 for a professional
landscaping company to do.

project that was being done in his
honor; McGovern said she served

Most of the Moorestown com-
munity is now aware that our
Council, in April, voted to take
$217,845 of Open Space trust
funds for initial work for pro-
posed recreational field improve-
ments, commonly known as the
K.I.D.S. initiative.
Along with other “left over”
funds, Moorestown Township
Council has now appropriated
one quarter of a million dollars
for design and study of artificial
fields, paved parking lots, score-
boards, and artificial lights,
most from the Open Space Trust
fund.
Along with a sizable number
of my fellow citizens, I am out-
raged by this action, rushed
through with the minimum re-
quired legal notice.
It’s important to note that not
all of our Council voted to raid
the Open Space funds.
Stacey Jordan and Chris Chi-
acchio voted “no” for the resolu-
tion to appropriate open space
funds.
I want to clarify: I am not op-
posing the K.I.D.S. initiative.
Field maintenance and invest-
ment is needed for nearly all
recreational facilities in
Moorestown.
But I am firmly against using
open space funds for doing so.
It is the wrong source of
funds.

Robinson book signing
One of the greatest athletes
ever to come out of Moorestown
High School, Dave Robinson, will
be signing copies of his book The
Lombardi Legacy: Thirty people
who were touched by Greatness,
as part of the festivities sur-
rounding the Moorestown
Lacrosse Festival on Saturday,
May 21.
Robinson, who went on from
MHS to play for the Green Bay
Packers teams of the 1960s has
written a book about his friend
and coach Vince Lombardi.
Robinson and his co-author
Royce Boyles, will appear in the
festival exhibit area on the high
school athletic fields, and sign
books from 11 a.m. until 2.p.m.
The authors will donate $5
from the sale of each book to
Moorestown High School athlet-
ics.

Boyles was a prominent sports-
caster in Green Bay who spent
years covering the Packers and
hosting post game shows on the
Packers’ broadcasting network.
The Lombardi Legacy is differ-
ent from other books about the
Hall of Fame coach because each
chapter offers a different perspec-
tive on Lombardi through stories
told by unlikely figures, including
as a sideline photographer, Lom-
bardi’s secretary, players’ wives
and coaches’ wives.
One of those figures, Lori
Keck, who was Lombardi’s per-
sonal secretary, and who ap-
peared in the acclaimed HBO doc-
umentary on Vince Lombardi,
will also join the authors at the
event.

Boys Track
Moorestown High School boys
track recently competed in the
South Jersey Open at Buena High
School.
Senior Anthony Horten won
the 3,200 meter run with a time of
9:33. He’s the first Moorestown
athlete to win an event at this
meet.
Senior JoJo White made finals
in the 100 meeter with a time
of11.10 – a personal record. Senior
Kamal Steward also ran a 11.11
personal record.
Sophomore Sidney Ruffin
made finals in long jump with a
leap of 20-6 1/2.
Sophomore Jeremy Wilbur had
a personal best of 160-7 in the
javelin. White, Steward, and Ruf-
fin are ranked in the NJ Top 15 for
their events.
Girls Golf
The Moorestown girls’ golf
team entered three players in the
Carl Arena/Al Rifkin HS Tourna-
ment on Thursday May 3 at River-
winds Golf Course in West Dept-
ford Par 72.
Traditionally a boys’ team
tournament, there were 18 girls
participating.
Moorestown’s Kelly Hwang
shot 101 and finished eighth over-
all. Angie Sweeney shot 105 and
finished 10th. Sarah Jordan shot
113 and finished 16th.
The Moorestown girls squad
qualified for the State Sectional
Tournament, which will be
played at Bea Ley Golf Course in
Toms River on Monday.
Moorestown senior Lexi Klein
qualified for the New Jersey state
tournament as an individual and
will represent the Quakers on
May 25 at Bamm Hollow Golf
Club in Linwood.
Quakes U11 Girls Soccer
The Moorestown Quakes U-11
girls soccer team, battled to a 4-4
road tie versus the Penns Grove
High Voltage recently.
It was a back and forth battle,
that featured a Penns Grove
penalty kick and four lead
changes.
Caroline Cook opened the scor-
ing after a great pass from Made-
line Gill found her open on the
six, for an easy goal.
In addition to a great day of
passing, Madeline also potted two
goals on her own, playing her best
game of the year.
Lauren Segal also made some
great passes at forward during
the game springing Bridget
Hartshorne for a semi breakaway
and a blast that resulted in the
Quakes fourth goal.
It was a team effort from Jessi-
ca Garcia, Jaonna Elia, Alex
Wartson, Angelina “glue gun”
Conroy and Katie Hombeck at
midfield to limit Penns Grove’s
scoring chances.
It took a great defensive play,
breaking up a scoring chance, by
Maggie Rafferty at the end of the

Fifth-grade Gold Lacrosse
The Moorestown fifth grade
Gold boys’ lacrosse team played a
full slate of six games last week-
end.
Things got off to a slow start as
Moorestown dropped its first two
games against Seneca and Cen-
tral Bucks, managing only two
goals scored by Josh Fauvell and
Steven Weissman. Peter Ladelfa
and Trevor Jones minded the
nets.
The team found its stride
against Long Valley and earned a
4-1 victory behind goals by Josh
Buck, Ryan Pozega, Ladelfa and
Weissman. Judah Hicks turned
in a fine performance in goal.
In the fourth game,
Moorestown cruised to a 4-0 victo-
ry against Summit with goals
scored by Trevor Jones, Ladelfa,
Bobby Garrison and Dylan De-
Marco.
Cole McHugh and JT Lumley
tied for the ground ball lead and
the defense shut out Long Valley
with Weissman in goal.
The fifth and final game of the
day saw another Moorestown vic-
tory as goals by Dante Lucarini,
Dan Rohrbach, Ladelfa and Fau-
vell (2) fueled a 5-2 victory against
Flemington.
Stephen Goralski played goal
and Buck, DeMarco and Weiss-
man tied for ground balls.

The season opener saw the St.
Joseph Hawks tie the Stockton
Osprey 6-6 in their game. For the

St. Joe’s played solid team defense
and got timely hitting. Stockton

The Dukes were also victorious
over the Lafayette Leopards in a
full team effort led by pitchers

five strikeouts and two scoreless
innings. The Leopards had key
hits from Hanna Weinstein and
Carlie MacMillian, with excellent
pitching from Kelly Moxhay.
The Lafayette Leopards turned
around and beat the Rowan Profs
12-8 in an exciting match with ex-
cellent pitching by Carlie

who started a double play (caught
a fly ball and threw to second for a

Help bring back the Fourth
It’s back, Moorestown. Or at
least, it could be.
After a two-year hiatus, a
group of citizens is planning to
bring back the much beloved
Fourth of July parade and family
fun events to Moorestown.
A citizens’ committee, headed
by David Schill, is actively
preparing for a Moorestown July
Fourth Parade. The Moorestown
Business Association is the pri-
mary sponsor of the parade,
which will begin at noon on July

prior to the parade, as well as a
Main Street storefront decoration
contest, which will be judged at
noon on July 2.
Neighborhood groups are en-
couraged to organize and develop
a group participation in the July
Fourth parade, centered on the
“1776” theme.
Children are encouraged to
decorate bikes, wagons, even
wheelbarrows, in patriotic colors
and march along in the parade.
Funds are needed for traffic con-
trol and safety by the Moorestown
police, fees for musical perform-
ers and other acts. Many of the
participants in the parade will be
volunteers, but for a successful
parade, money is required for
musical acts and other entertain-
ment participants.
A fund-raising campaign is un-
derway to raise funds for this
community event.

If I had a gorgeous, vintage
Mercedes parked in my driveway,
I would be a very happy camper. I
feel the same way about the rec
center. It is truly a classic build-
ing that means a lot to many of us
in town.
I would venture to say that Tom
Sadler, whose Eagle Scout project

How on earth did this task
force make these assumptions

I am a teacher in another dis-
trict but I live here in
Moorestown.
I make frequent use of the
books in the library, and the vast
wealth of knowledge of the dedi-
cated staff.
In closing, to all the fans of
electronic devices that are calling
for a smaller library and a reduc-
tion of books, let me ask you this
question: The next time a young
child asks you to read them a pic-
ture book, would you rather whip
out your Kindle, or sit in the pic-
ture book room of the library,
turning the pages and savoring
the rich illustrations?

Evergreens keeping it green

The Evergreens is a communi-
ty that makes a conscious effort
toward being green and environ-
mentally friendly throughout the
year.
To show that green living can
transcend generations, residents
and staff members invited the
public to the facility for a festive
eco-conscious fair last Thursday.
The event, held on an annual
basis in honor of Earth Day, is in-
tended to celebrate the eco-friend-
ly initiatives that residents and
staff practice throughout the
year.
Director of Facilities Alice
Moseley said this was the third,
consecutive year The Evergreens
hosted the event.
“They’re very focused, here, on
recycling and eco-friendly and en-
vironmental initiatives,” Moseley
said. “This shows that everything
they’ve been doing, even if it’s
just one person at a time, it
counts.”

pressive statistics like the recy-
cling of 1,200 five-gallon water
bottles and 180 shampoo contain-
ers each year.
The community has also man-
aged to recycle things that help to
make the campus a beautiful
place to be, including three tons
of grass clippings in 2010, as well
as 1,000 pounds of sticks and de-
bris, 200 yards of mulch, and 4,000
pounds of leaves for compost.
The Evergreens facility itself
is also becoming more eco-friend-
ly with a two-phase sustainable
design strategy that includes im-
plementing high efficiency fix-
tures for energy and water con-
servation, and using environmen-
tally friendly paint and flooring
products made from recycled ma-
terial.
Phase two of the strategy, slat-
ed to begin in the near future, in-
cludes installing white roofing on
all apartment buildings, which
helps reflect the sun and reduce
heat gain so energy costs are re-
duced.
The second phase also includes
are lead by an Earth Day/envi-
ronmental committee that is
made up of both residents and
staff members.
At last week’s fair, all partici-
pants received a Responsible
Global Citizen Green Passport,
which includes a summary of
facts, figures, and information
relevant to The Evergreens cam-
pus and community in their daily
quest to reduce, reuse and recy-
cle. Attendees were also encour-
aged to sign a pledge saying they
would continue their green ef-
forts.

Earth Day costumes were at the
event to mingle with residents
and guests.
Vendors and event sponsors
handed out free giveaways, and
there was also a raffle drawing for
a variety of prizes – eco-friendly
prizes, of course.

and 17 who love to act, dance, and

again be held entirely at Hope
Community Church.

each three weeks long, the chil-
dren will have morning classes in
drama, improv, music, and, on al-
ternating days, jazz and tap danc-
ing. These classes will be taught
by local college students who are
all majoring in performing arts
and/or education.

A separate girls contest will be
held on the same date at the same
location where a softball will be
used instead of a baseball.
This would provide the oppor-
tunity for girls to hit the softball
and also advance to the girls re-
gional final.
This year’s Phillies Home Run
Derby is scheduled for May 20,
with a May 25 rain date. The
event will kick off at 5:30 p.m. at

pointments and take them shop-

tivities and with snacks and

Volunteers receive training
and orientation. While day cen-
ter volunteers are asked to com-
mit to the same day each week,
the commitment for transporta-
tion volunteers is flexible; they

planning to offer two new pro-
grams for children this summer,

The library will begin offering
a Baby Storytime for children
from birth to age 2 and needs do-
