Lesson Planning

Waynesburg University

Pre-Instructional Planning:
The thought process that leads to the development of quality,
meaningful lesson plans
First Eucharistic Preparation

Guiding questions that will provide the framework for the lesson. (Respond to each question.)
Who will you be teaching? (Identify student grade level as well as academic functioning level and specific needs of individual students)

 The lessons will be focused toward second grade children that have received the sacrament of baptism. Accomodations will be made
based on learning ability as well as dietary needs.
Who (if anybody) will assist with the presentation of this lesson, and what will their role be?
 The parents or guardians will play an active role in the preparation by participating in group meetings as well as reinforcing family
reflections at home.
What is the long range goal(s) that is tied to this lesson?

 The long range goal is to instill children and their parents or guardians with knowledge of why they have a personal need for the
sacrament of First Eucharistic, provide a foundation of their catholic faith, and describe the preparation process.
What is the specific learning objective(s) for this lesson?
 The student will gain knowledge in the basic prayers of the Catholic faith: sign of the cross, the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Act of
Contrition.
 TSW develop an understanding of the Eucharist as a sacrament of thanksgiving and reconciliation.
 TSW reflect upon Christ’s life as proclaimed in the Gospels, considering the Last Supper and the Jewish roots of this covenant meal.

 TSW develop an understanding of the belief that Christ is present in the Eucharist.

 TSW proceed through one’s obligation to be free of sin before receiving First Eucharist by completing First Reconciliation.

 TSW achieve an appreciation of the importance and significance of liturgy of the word in the Eucharist celebration, and the meaning of
the ritual, symbols, and parts of the Mass.
 TSW understand that once receiving the Eucharist they can take part actively in the church by sharing the Lord’s table and community
of their brothers and sisters.
What prerequisite skills/knowledge will students need to effectively access and participate in this lesson?
 Students will need to have been baptized and have the appropriate documentation.
When within the stages of learning will this lesson be presented? (Is it a learning acquisition lesson, learning fluency lesson, learning
maintenance lesson, or learning generalization lesson?)
 ?

When will this lesson be completed? (Will it be a one-day lesson or a multiple day lesson?)
This will be a multiple day lesson that will be completed in 8 sessions. Each session will be one and a half hours.
Where should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (computer lab, classroom, science lab…) AND
what materials will be needed?

 Since this is a faith based lesson, it will be held at a meeting space designated by the parish. Ideally, it will be held at a meeting hall
located at the parish where the celebration will take place.
 Materials needed:
• Various handouts for participants
• Take home activities
Why are you planning to teach this lesson? Why must this information/skill be presented to the students?
 I chose this lesson as I just recently completed First Eucharist Preparation with my son and will participate next year with my daughter.
I realized a need for more technology integration to engage today’s learners more.

How does this lesson relate to the PA Academic Standards?

 Since the content of the lesson is faith based academic standards would not be addressed.
 Integrating technology and family presentations would address standards.

How does this lesson relate to the previous lesson? How does this lesson relate to future lessons?

How will you determine if students have met the lesson objective? (Think assessment)
 This would be difficult to assess as no formal assessment would be administered. Mastery of objectives would be assessed by level
of participation in activities and discussions as well as family follow-up projects.

How should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (lecture, whole group activities, small group
activities, cooperative learning groups…)

 The lessons would be presented by lecture format and small group activities. Lessons would be followed with learning groups as well
as family follow-up activities that would be shared in the next meeting.
